TJ BOOM REYNABy Sir Edward avElar

Well ladies and gentlemen I had the wonderful opportunity to talk with mr.TJ Boom the man the myth himself.

Before I get started I would like for you to know how humble and generous mr.TJ is. Having known him through social media and different shows and events he really makes you feel like you have known each other for years. With a big smile hidden behind his manly beard and almost always

A locAl legend in the mAking…

wearing a Fin addict hat, it was a pleasure doing an interview with him and I look forward to doing events with him in the future.

Edward- Well TJ tell me about yourself, how did you get involved fishing?TJ- I started out as a kid when my father would take me fishing on his boat and being around salt water a lot. Even as a kid I would ride my bike to local canals and go fishing.

Edward- Do you consider you’re self as a pro angler? and why.TJ- Well to be honest I don’t consider myself to be a pro, I know I’m on pro staff but no not at all, I won’t consider myself a pro till I win an IFa, GoPro or a red Fish cup something along that manner. .as of now I am a Pro Staffer and I do compete in tournaments and I help push my sponsors product because I use it.

I don’t or will not consider outside sponsors unless I use their product regularly, I get asked to use other peoples product but how can I help push a product if I have never used it.

Edward- Everyone knows you for the Ultimate Cork, how is that going?TJ- That is going very good, Ultimate Cork has been very good to me and since the launch of the product I have stood behind them and I will continue to do so. Ultimate Cork is an awesome product and it works, I always have one tied on. Ultimate Cork works when all else doesn’t , I am an all around fisherman, I use bait or lures on

it, it will produce especially on windy days and it’s easy to cast. Fin addicts, Fishstix, and Unfair lures have been really good to me as well.

Edward- What do you think is the most important value in what you do?TJ- Integrity, in this industry you have to have integrity to make it. Being loyal and never forgetting where you are from.

Edward- How much time do you spend on the water?TJ- I’m on the water every week man, I wake up ready to hit the water. looking forward to limiting out, even if I get skunked, every trip is a blessing.

Edward- What do you do when you are not fishing?TJ- Fishing lol, I love what I do, I would rather do something I love making me happy than to go to a job and do something I hate and not loving it.

Edward- So tell me TJ what kind of reels do you use or favor, spinning or bait casting and why?TJ- I’m a spinning reel guy, I have better control and it’s easier to handle, I can still cast under a dock with a spinning reel.

Edward- What species do you target when you go out?TJ- Well all of them lol but I target red fish, Trout, Flounder and Black drum. as long as I got them on the boat I am a happy camper. I’ve been blessed to be able the fish the great waters we have here, I fish arroyo, SPI, Ports mansfield but if I had to choose then arroyo is my favorite place.

Page 6: TJ Boom Are! Reyna - rppmagazine.comrppmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/RPP-1st-Edition.pdf · a year by rPP outdoors Inc. views and comments expressed by rPP outdoors magazine

Edward- TJ the big question is why do you fish?TJ- Well it brings me back to the times when I was with my dad and that bonding experience we had the memories of being together. and to be able to go out and forget about everything and to set back and take in all that mother nature and all of Gods creations.

Edward- TJ I know the rGv, SPI and the surrounding waters have fell off the map somewhat by not being able to hold some of the national level tournaments, what do you think is the reason?TJ- Well like my good buddy Chip Harmon said “ If everyone would put away their swords” meaning that as a whole we have to many groups wanting to bring each other down and not helping one another. and focus more on conservation and educating the youth.

Edward- TJ, yes I have seen this first hand for myself and that is really a shame, and as far as education I am with you there is so much more we should be doing to protect our waters to secure our future.

Edward- Who do you look up to as a mentor in the industry.TJ- Well as my true mentor in life I would say Capt. Smiley he has helped me the day to day advice and has been like

father figure to me. “Shimano Penn” oscar has helped me and guided me through this fast pace industry and has been very good influencer in my life, I am so grateful for all the work and advise he has given me, he really has played a big part in my career. oscar has so much going on and to have him to stop what he is doing to help me out when I have questions it really means a lot.

Edward- Well Boom how do you balance life and fishing, shows and so on.TJ- Well, that’s easy I do it by “God Family Water”. That is how I look at life. God has really blessed me. He has really opened the doors for me and the doors are only getting bigger. I have a wonderful wife who backs me up and supports what I do. You know we just had the Houston fishing show and I was gone for a week and all I could do was think of my kids and home, plus the water. I really have a great family and I look forward to being with them every moment of the day.

Edward- are there any plans to guiding soon or what’s in the future for you.TJ- Well I do plan on doing that but when you become a guide then fishing becomes a job and I really don’t want that and I don’t want to lose that. Each time I get on the water it brings me to that

special spot and I am not ready to do that just yet. right now I will concentrate on helping with charity events and charity tournaments.

Edward- mr. Boom everyone including myself thanks you for all you do and the great pictures on social media, you seem to be a trendsetter with the cork in the mouth. Its a pleasure to have the opportunity to talk with you and to get to know the man behind the beard. You are truly very inspiring and a role model. You seem to have your goals and know where you are going. I look forward to seeing you on the water. maybe I can get you on a kayak!TJ- Thank you and as far as the kayak well I have done that and it’s not for me!

TJ- Edward thank you for all that you do and STaY BlESSED.-Boom

Custom made Rods

Today I was able to sit down with mr. Fin Chasr himself mr. randy Sanchez the owner and operator of Fin Chasrs Tackle and outfitters in Weslaco, Texas.

We had the opportunity to talk to randy about his new signature rod by Blacklash.

at 7’ long it catches your eyes from across the room.

With new microwave guide technology being held on with beautiful color thread wraps, with that said it’s hard not to miss. When picking up the rod you feel the perfect balance in your hand, the combination of soft light weight non slip Winn grips to match the guide wraps makes it hard to put down.

The 7’ medium action rod is there standard rod, but they are introducing

the medium light action rod and several lengths from 7’6 to 8’ and even a youth model of 5’4 this spring and summer!

let me tell you when picking up the rod I had that same feeling I had when I picked up my first born for the first time. needless to say I was very excited and I can see myself casting this rod all day.

The rod has an amazing feel being only 3.3oz making it one the lightest rods in it class, setting the standard for modern fishing now a days.

With so many rods that have seen the spot light by other manufactures in the past it is a hard to break through the market, but what separates these rods from your typical manufactures is that they are all handmade and done right here in the rGv.

The time and talent that it took to make each rod is very impressive. When asking randy about how fast are you selling rods, his response was “Too FaST”. “ I can’t keep them in the store, as soon as I get them they are sold or I am taking special orders and those come first.”

asking randy what makes the rod sell so good? “Customer service and a life time warranty.”

“In a few weeks that I started to carry the rods we sold 90 rods.” fmy expression on my face was jaw dropping. as I was doing the interview with randy two other customers came in and bought 2 rods back to back at only $169.99 what a bargain!

I was impressed at how fast they are selling them and more impressed at the great quality and customer care each client received as they came in. They really know how to make you feel welcomed when walking in the door.

my final thoughts on the rod is that Fin Chasrs have hit a home run with their new rods, strong, handmade, light weight rod to help prevent casting fatigue it seems that they are going in the right direction.

If you ever get a chance to go to Weslaco, Texas stop by Fin Chasrs and try out the rod for yourself you will be amazed at how they feel and look.

For more information on the Fin Chasrs rod feel free to call Randy or go by.

4 inch H2O CoastalHover Shrimp

By surprise when waking into my local academy I walked pass a small centerpiece in the middle of the fishing isle several times before I noticed what looked like live bait in packaging. In fact I was close because at first glance you would think it was live bait!

I had a hard time trying to figure out what colors I wanted to take and do a review on since they have about 4-5 different colors, so I decided to get the two most realistic colors that in my sense was what I know live shrimp look like.

Page 11: TJ Boom Are! Reyna - rppmagazine.comrppmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/RPP-1st-Edition.pdf · a year by rPP outdoors Inc. views and comments expressed by rPP outdoors magazine

4 inch H2O CoastalHover Shrimp

So I went with Brown Shrimp, Tiger Prawn. When looking at the packaging I noticed that they already had quality hooks by vmC and once I opened and took the shrimp out of the package I found out that they were a hard plastic lure, from the package I could swear they were soft plastic. They are so live like that they have antennas and soft plastic legs and feelers underneath the hard plastic lure.

The colors and shine are truly realistic and to think they are H2o a academy house brand I was very impressed that the detail was very methodical and good, even the fact that the shell of the lure was painted to seem like it has texture and with a small shrimp horn.

When looking at the package I tried to look to see for some type of direction on how to use this, to see if it’s a floating or slow sinking lure but there wasn’t anything on or in the package. But I guess the name Hover shrimp would explain it.

as I was walking away I noticed more baits but that’s going to have to wait for another review. I am ecstatic that academy has stepped up on the brands that coastal anglers are looking for. The vmC hooks are pretty much standard and are very sharp. my concern is if they will hold up to the harsh saltwater because they are not the typical saltwater silver color hooks as you

see on most lures for saltwater. I don’t see any reason to change the hooks out until they rust or until you wear them down.

Without a doubt I find it hard to not to find this lure in anybody’s tackle box and for a steal of a deal for $4.99 you can’t beat it and it being very completive with other shrimp lures on the market. With warm temperatures coming in and water clarity will be clearing up soon I can see using this to sight cast to any swimming predatory fish cruising the flats. When I did the bath tub water test I soon noticed it was a sinking lure and right away I saw some great results with the antennas and feeler legs moving around as it sank I could only think of how great this lure is going to work. The weight is located in the nose of the shrimp and the line attachment is right on the top of the head. Doing some testing in the tub I improved the action by removing the rear hook and tying it to the split ring in the rear and it made the action even more believable. When testing it in the tub with a slight popping action I could only think how it was making me crave for some shrimp on the Barbie.

as I conclude my tub test and make plans for the next bay trip on my kayak you better believe the Hover Shrimp will be tied to a popping cork ready for some action! Stay Blessed and Be one with the Water!

There are a lot of anglers here in the rio Grande valley and chances are, your self if not your dad, mom, brother, or sister might be a saltwater addict. Heck they love the outdoors so much that they formed a group or an apparel company. You might run into someone wearing a cap or a shirt of a brand made right here in our own back yard by folks with a passion for the sport! lets take the rGv reel Hookers for example. now this group caught our attention not only because they are mainly an all female fishing organization that gives back to the community but work hard all year long for their annual Fish 4 autism Tournament held in april this year at arroyo City, TX. So I had the pleasure of meeting one of the founders of the rGv reel Hookers, mireya Chavez.

We met up over at a local bar and grill in Weslaco, TX with a couple of mutual friends. as we first started talking about the Houston show that had just passed the weekend before, I started off with some ice water so that you know, I looked a little professional but once the stories started, well I had to get me a cold miller lite!

The rGv reel Hookers were founded three years ago by mireya Chavez and martha reyna. after the first year rGv reel Hookers registered as a non-profit organization and has about 40 members today. mireya started fishing as a kid with her mom as well as a child hood neighbor and didn’t stop there! She quickly realized the need for help in the community and what best way to help if not by fishing. The Fish 4 autism tournament was a wonderful idea. Held on april 23, 2016, the tournament brought in people from all over the valley to the popular arroyo City. Details for the Tournament are quite simple and the reel Hookers give you

until the day before to register for those last minute folks who decide to be a part of this exciting tournament for a cause. as before, the tournament was a success!

We ask mireya what has been the best journey in her time as an angler, and she fills us in, “nothing gives me more satisfaction to know were changing lives one day at a time in the sport of fishing”. mireya also tells us her most interesting and funny but most painful moment has definitely been getting literally “hooked” on her finger while on the water. “Well I guess everyone’s seen it (the video) and well it made us a little more popular lol.” The video circulates social media and she is perfectly fine with it she says with a smile on her face. Good times is what we end up naming stories like these even though they were painful when it actually happened.

You can visit the rGv reel Hookers shop located at 1425 W. Expressway 83 in Weslaco, TX. There you can find apparel and other cool fishing gear and mireya of course. maybe you can take a look at the infamous finger that got hooked, just kidding!

RPP Magazine would like to thank RGV Reel Hookers for sharing their passion with us. If you

would like to be featured in our next issue please tells us about your team/group or company

SaFety StOry KayaK

on a calm chilly morning I managed to get myself out of the warm bed and load my kayak and gear onto my SUv and head out to arroyo City where I had about 15 or so friends waiting to hit the water and try some winter fishing.

The game plan was to get some inexperience kayakers to rattle Snake Bay and shallow water bay off the arroyo and hopefully run into some reds or trout.

It would be a 4 mile or so paddle and being with inexperience paddlers we decided to have a boat tow us out to save time.

It was a good plan to save time so that the inexperience paddles wouldn’t get so fatigued.

after getting dropped off by the boat we proceeded to fish the shallow bay, but with no luck.

The water temp wasn’t cold but the air temp was a bit uncomfortable and the chilly wind cutting through me.

By Sir Edward avElar

Page 15: TJ Boom Are! Reyna - rppmagazine.comrppmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/RPP-1st-Edition.pdf · a year by rPP outdoors Inc. views and comments expressed by rPP outdoors magazine

I always try to dress comfortable but weather reports said it would heat up in the 80s so I wore shorts and dry fit fishing shirt, not the best choice but I figured we wouldn’t be out long with a boat to tow us back.

after a few hours of fishing the winds picked up, and when the wind came in it was mother nature’s way of letting us know it was time to come in.

Winds started to scatter the paddlers and we decided to seek refuge on a little island.

after we corralled the rest of the paddlers to the island that we had to refuge on we decided to not let the day of fishing go to waste so we started to wade fish the shallow flat where I managed to land a nice 15 inch flounder with several misses.

We began to get our gear together to call it a day when we noticed our radio had no battery life left and our cell phones had no signal to call for our tow boat.

as we were waiting, the tow boat came by and took part of the group in and would come back for the rest of us.

after an hour turned into several hours and that turned into four hours of waiting and with everyone running out of snacks and food we began to wonder how we would get back.

The wind and currents were not in our favor and if we tried to make our way back I would have a chance of losing someone to the chop.

That wasn’t something I was ready to do, so we decided stay put.

as the day went by we noticed almost no boat traffic where we were, and the little boat traffic we saw attempted to get them to stop with blowing a safety whistle but with no luck, with the wind howling and the sound of a boat motor they were not able to hear me.

my next attempt was trying a signaling mirror on the next boat passing by, with the aid of the whistle and to our luck no joy.

By this time our snack and water supply were running out, and trying to keep our sprits high we began to joke around with who was going to filter out and try drinking urine or run around half naked like they do on tv.

We started to make jokes and brain storm what action we would do if we had to stay on the island any longer.

In any safety or survival scenario one of the key points is to keep a clear mind and high spirits, that is departmental to your survival.

as I was going through my PFD that has several pockets I have another safety whistle with compass, fire starter, on the opposite side where I had my signaling mirror I have a DYE packet just in case I find myself in open water. all I have to do is open the DYE pack and it will turn the surrounding water a bright color to make it easy for aerial search and rescue.

But inside that same pocket I carry an orange safety flag that has the magic word in bold letters “HElP”

So I took it out and had it ready for the next boat to go by.

after waiting a while I saw what looked like a fishing boat with open throttle trying to get through the flats and as he approached I stared to wave my flag and jump in the air and blow my whistle and what would you know he saw me, he stopped and almost got stuck in the process.

The fishing Capt. asked what happened and we told him we were stranded. Without hesitation he offered to put our kayaks on his boat and took us in.

We were so grateful for his help and we learned a valuable lesson that no matter what be prepared for the worst.

It turned out the tow boat had ran into engine problems and a secondary boat was out of fuel.

We learned not to trust electronic devices and go back to the basics and when all else fails make the best out of bad situation.

We all made it back and are looking forward to our next adventure together.

BBQCook-offS

a trend growing over the years that have turned some folks into master grillers! If you haven’t been to a cook-off, you’re missing out! Im talking custom pits and smokers like you’ve never seen before. music, cold drinks, and the smell of mesquite in the air are just some of the things a cook-off has to offer. We tap into team aver Que Sale with the Salinas brothers who are among the best in the lone Star State in the exciting sport of competition BBQ.

A cook-off is set for this weekend, how do you prepare? It starts with meat selection (rio valley meats in Weslaco, TX.). Finding that perfect brisket, ribs and chicken are a crucial part of how successful you will be on Saturday. Prepping for us usually happens on Thursday, before an event.

What is a cook-off and how many members does a team normally have? an IBCa sanctioned cook off is a competition between BBQ teams in brisket, chicken, and pork spare ribs. BBQ teams have anywhere from 1 to 30 (lol) team members. our members include: Chuck Salinas, okie Salinas, arturo Salinas, archie Salinas, romel Garcia, roy Gomez, and alex morales. Southern Smoke is our local chapter here in the valley. Eddie Tapia and Jake Barrera do an excellent job of running our pit and making sure all of us are informed of any news and upcoming events.

How long have you guys been competing in cook-offs? We have been competing for about 5 years.

Who came up with the name AVER QUE SALE? When did the team start? a vEr QUE’SalE and TBlB (Ta Buena la Beer) came from one of our best friends Cesar “lil bit” Sanchez (rIP). He was one of the funniest guys with the biggest heart you’d ever meet. I know if he was still with us he would be there at every cook off (I believe he still is).

What is the hardest food to cook as well as your favorite food to BBQ? I think my brother and I would agree that chicken is the hardest meat to cook. our favorite would have to be brisket.

Can anyone participate in a cook-off? Yes anyone with a BBQ pit, entry fee, and supplies can enter and compete at any competition. It can get expensive but we have been blessed with continuous support from our sponsors Cory’s Cakes, Judge luis Singleterry, Judge Jerry munoz, Dr. angie ramirez, a2o, mario lizcano, and Inhognito Championship seasoning.

The IBCA ranks BBQ teams across Texas, your team is ranked in the top 10 of 400 teams, how does it feel and to what do you attribute that success? It’s a big honor to currently be ranked in the top 10 in IBCa. We attribute a lot of our success to researching and trying to find that perfect flavor that pleases all judges. I would be lying if I didn’t mention Danny luera (Inhognito) as being one of the reasons we have had success. His advice and championship seasoning are an integral part in what we do and how we do it.

What would you like to tell our readers out there about competition cook- offs in general? any advice from avEr QUE SalE? Competition BBQ is addictive but it’s also become an extension of our family. It has allowed us to meet people we would have never crossed paths with. From BBQ Church with (Hector, roel, lupe and the villanueva Fam.) to all our BBQ brothers and sisters (you know who you are) throughout the valley and the great state of Texas. advice, for anyone wanting to seriously start competing, go judge as many BBQ competitions as you can. Talk to the head judge and ask if you can judge.

What is one of the funniest moments the team has had? There have been plenty of funny things happen throughout the years, but I guess the funniest has to be the time one of my bearded brothers from chillin n grillin literally ate a pair of my brand new shorts (had to be there to believe it) lol.

What do you enjoy most from the cook- offs? I would have to say the greatest joy of all of this is being able to share these experiences with our family. our Dad (arturo Salinas Sr.) and mom (Josie Salinas) oldest Brother (archie Salinas) go above and beyond to make sure we have everything needed to be successful. Couldn’t do it without my wife Dora and kids ava and Evan and (minerva) who follow us around town to town offering their unconditional love and support.

We’d like to thank team aver Que Sale and the Salinas family for sharing their thoughts and passion for the sport of competition bbq. With that in mind, I’m picking up some meat and lighting up the pit. Hopefully one day I’ll make it out of the backyard and join the big boys!

Team aver Que Sale offers catering services for your next event! For more information contact

SPRING TURKEY SEASON, SOUTH ZONE

Rio Grande - South Zone: Bag Limit - The annual bag limit for turkey, in the aggregate for all counties, is four (4), no more than one of which may be an Eastern turkey.

GOBBle GOBBle in Full eFFeCT!With spring turkey season in full effect best hope you sighted your bow or took a shot at some decoys.

Picture provided by E Garza from la Suerte ranch

like any other animal target we normally have in mind at the ranch, turkeys are amongst the best at letting the world know its mating season. Drumming strutting and gobbling letting the ladies know I’m here and I’m ready! This is when the experts whether it be the stalking method or the blind tactic will use their best calls to land that trophy Tom. We’ve seen our fare share of large turkeys along the roads of la Gloria and mcCook to name a few but no doubt south Texas is loaded with turkey. Be sure to know your surroundings with any type of hunt as rattlesnakes are making their appearance. make your trip to your local Hunting & Fishing provider and get your license! as with other game wild turkey by far is a great tasting meal. You wont find the game taste instead a juicy bite in every cut.

RAGING JAVELINA! oR aRe THey?Javelina season is active are you? People’s opinion when it comes to Javelina is mixed based on my experience. like most people, they portray the pit bull breed as the fiercest one out there and have a “be careful with those dogs” attitude as do myself. Javelina in some way have that rep where hunters will say be ready because there’s a lot of Javelina buddy and automatically your brain sets its defense mode. But surprisingly, my encounters with Javelina have been the opposite. on a cold morning of deer season as I was walking to my blind, a nochalant Javelina crosses right in front of me and to my surprise just kept on to his business. no herd or pack behind him or the infamous aggressive attitude was seen. although it could have been my scent blocker or my

slow quiet steps, trust me I didn’t want an explanation lol. I still felt the rush but no need to pull the pistol. These folks are more active in the early morning and late afternoon in winter, which is mainly when you’re walking to or from your blind. It is also said Javelina have very poor eyesight. Documented aggressive encounters are very rare but always be alert as you don’t know what kind of day the javelina might have lol.

Javelina or Collared Peccary is found mainly in the South Texas Brush.Southern - Rio Grande - Javelina Regular Season September 1, 2015 - Aug. 31, 2016 Bag Limit 2 per license year. Possession Limit 2 Must have hunting license. Visit your local TPWD store.

Puro cotorreo!Don’T ChAnGe iT up!We went fishing to a frequent spot with my family when I decided to try a budlight lime beer. There was nothing else at the time. Well after I finished it I had to put the rod down and run! I needed a restroom asap! There was only a bushy area where I was forced to squat down but my upper body was visible to everyone especially my girlfriend who had the camera ready and laughing her butt off! as if things couldn’t get worse, the bushes I was holding on to broke off and yes, I landed on my own you know what. lesson learned? Stick to your preferred beer! – al, mcallen, TX

ShirTleSS hunTeras we made our way to the blind we kept hearing my friend say his stomach hurt but we kept saying tough it out! So I dropped him off and the hunting started. as we made our way to pick him after we were heading back to camp we noticed our friend without a shirt! “What happened man?” he replied “well I told you my stomach hurt and well there’s no toilet paper here so I used my shirt!” lol Well now we know why he shot nothing! – Eddie, Edinburg, TX

i GoT ThiS!my cousin and I took my grandson fishing to the jetties. We were going to teach him how to fish. my cousin right away started to take over when I said no sir, Im teaching my grandson so move out of the way! as I casted out I hooked my cousin in the nose! We made our way to the hospital where the bill was crazy! oh well I told everyone we caught a huge fish! lol It was windy that day. – Jaime, alamo, TX
