BIODIVERSITY AN IMPORTANT PART
THE SAFE - OUR MAIN SOURCE OF INCOME
• No States funding!• Rely entirely on Voluntary contributions or sponsorship!• Most tourists believe that a donation is made from the ticket price ( It is not )!• We do not propose to charge an entry fee but need control of the site for Health and Safety reasons!
SUMMARY• Restoration not complete!
• Chapel structurally sound but work continues on repair of ceramics.!• Grotto has holes underneath which need urgent investigation and repair, possibly Deodat’s Crypt.!
• Water Penetration causing continued damage and instability!• Caused instability problems to Chapel in the first place.!• Run-off from Blanchelande College and car park runs through our site and no Interceptors for fuel spillages.!• Expensive diversion work necessary including a new rill for storm-water situations.!
• Dangerous Paths and steps!• Worn out, cracked and with uneven risers and without handrails.!• Not meeting current Health and Safety obligations of the Foundation.!• Risk of being uninsurable for public liability cover unless improvements made.!
• Chapel has no disabled access!• Many people unable to reach the Chapel!• States policy to improve accessibility !• Cannot adapt current access so a new one is necessary.!• Very steep site so achieving correct gradients difficult.!• Mature trees restrict the type of materials and foundations due to possible damage to root systems.!
• Conflict of pedestrians and traffic !• Access road unsuited for large number of visitors and impacting on business users of road.!• Unsafe conflict of traffic and people.!• Coach parking on Bouillon Road causing danger to other users. Needs urgent resolution by States Traffic Department
in consultation with the Douzaine.!• Guernsey’s most popular Tourist Attraction but no facilities!
• Exact numbers unknown but suggested in excess of 70,000 a year.!• No toilets, no areas for shelter, no central point for first aid and assistance.!• VisitGuernsey’s aim to increase Tourism so problems will get worse.!• Car park needs re-surfacing and marking out and Terre à L’Amende order to stop illegal parking.!
• Lack of Tranquility - no control!• Important to be maintained for this heritage religious site.!• Spoiled by large number of tourists and especially huge volumes when Cruise Ships are visiting the Island.!• Foundation has no control over the numbers of visitors or volumes as no prior notice from tour operators!
• No money!• The Foundation receives no States funding and relies entirely on voluntary donations and sponsorship.!• Many tourists assume that they have already made a contribution in their ticket price from the tour operators.!• No intention to charge an entrance fee but needs to ensure sufficient funds for future maintenance.!
Thank you to all our Consultants, Volunteers and Sponsors!for their tremendous help on our journey !
to sensitively restore and enhance The Little Chapel and grounds. !Without your help what has been achieved so far would have been impossible
PHASE 2 CONSULTANTS! Andrew Merrett, Lovell Ozanne and Partners Ltd. - Architect! Andrew Dyke, CCD - Architect (Chapel and Grotto)! Stephen Welch, Welch Landscape Design Ltd. - Garden Designer ! Richard Loyd, Tree Dimensions - Arboricultural Consultant
HOW MUCH WILL IT ALL COST?!We do not know yet as quotations are being obtained!Overall development cost ballpark figure of £500,000 (including the car park / retaining wall)!Expected that this will come down quite a lot!Contains large contingencies for water problems and structural repairs to Grotto! We have already received pro bono offers of goods, discounts and services !(This saved £150,000 on the initial Chapel renovations.)!The work will be phased and regularly reviewed, aiming for completion in 2023 for the Centenary!
COMMUNITY PROJECT!Lots of the work in the Gardens will be done by Volunteers and CSR groups. !Clearance of vegetation is progressing with Probation Service Community Service Offenders !and Guernsey Football team are booked for sessions.
Guernsey’s Best Loved Attraction!Deserves better!
