Teaching Children To Learn, Play, Move, And Act In The Preschool Classroom STAFF Michelle Atanu, OTR, Pediatric Occupational Therapist This interactive course will help participants understand how to work with children at their highest potential in the classroom through topics related to; sensory integration, producing child movement, encouraging speech and language, encouraging play, stimulating brain development and achieving age appropriate self- care skills. School Directors and Owners, teachers, and parents, will leave the course with applicable knowledge on how to address these common childhood topics through lecture, hands on activities, small group, practice examples, and observation/ discussion. 1. B. It’s More Than Fire Drills- It’s Emergency Preparedness Yolanda Delgado STAFF & MANAGEMENT

Participants will learn the importance of having a planning team to prepare for an emergency plan of action in advance. The team will identify an alternative site, evacuation procedures, access to supplies and equipment staffing patterns, safety and security, accountability and care for children. Communication to staff and parents as well with the public and media will be explored. Identification of community resources will be discussed.

1. C. Healthy Kids Through Early Science- Based Health Education Robin Herskowitz STAFF & MANAGEMENT

Part of being the best in childcare is attending carefully to each child’s health and safety and learning environment. Participants at this session will learn how they build a child’s science mastery while helping the child develop self- regulatory skills that can lead to good health behaviors based on the child’s understanding of how his or her body works, it’s nutritional and fitness needs and how the environment contributes to his or her health and well- being.

They happen every day—those frustrating, circular “I’m right, you’re wrong!” arguments. What’s at risk may be as life changing as whether or not your classroom is out of control, or your clientele’s complaints are wrecking your nerves. Or it may be as commonplace as getting owners/ management to approve small improvement request. These situations often frustrate both parties, stall progress, and hurt relationships. But they don’t have to. In “I’m Right, You’re Wrong, What’s Next?” Owners, Management, Staff and even volunteers will learn distinctive ways to overcome these challenges and move past conflict to a swift resolution.

How many times are we faced with unprofessional staff when we enter various businesses? Do we stop and ask ourselves… how do I appear to the parents, staff, my fellow coworkers etc…? In this training, we will explore various ways of maintaining our professionalism both verbally and nonverbally. We will actively discuss tools necessary for success within our childcare industry and how we can continue to be professional child care providers within our facilities.

You will learn how to use music and movement in a way that develop fluency in Spanish, support content learning, enrich vocabulary, promote self- expression, cultural pride and a strong sense of community among yourself and your students. In addition, you will learn how to make and use egg shakers, rhythm sticks and use nylon scarves to promote and enhance student participation, motivation to sing and speak in Spanish and to express themselves.

Participants will leave with the tools to understand and implement the critical skill of language development for children from birth through age 5. Teachers will have an understanding of the importance of a strong foundation in language that children need and how they can influence this skill by the way they set up the environment, the language they use, and the experience they provide.

MEET THIS CONFERENCE’S AMAZING SPEAKER LINEUP

Michelle Atanu is an occupational therapist with over seven years of experience working with the pediatric population. As an occupational therapist she specializes in the evaluation and treatment of children with sensory processing challenges, behavior regulation concerns, learning disabilities, attention deficits and children with cognitive and neuromotor impairments. She co-owns and runs a private practice, Avilo Inc. which provide consultation services and conducts training seminars for child care facilities, private schools and adoption agencies. These trainings focus on childhood and infant/ toddler development, sensory integration, child health, behavior modification in the classroom and at home, and brain development. She authors several referenced based newsletters and provides consultation services to several schools and early childcare facilities. Yolanda Delgado has a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Texas at El Paso. She has taught numerous seminars in management, team building, assertiveness, and sensitivity training, Women as Leaders, conflict management, communication, human relations skills, child development, and child care administration. Since 2003 she has been the owner of Child Care Consulting, a training and consulting services company. Before this, she was a Child Care Licensing Representative and Child Development Specialist, an Area Coordinator and Day Care Center Director, as well as a Teacher for the El Paso Independent School District. Robin Herkowitz has worked as a public health professional since 1987 when she served as the Senior Policy Analyst for the Texas State Committee on Public Health. She founded HealthStart Foundation in 2010 because she saw a pressing need for health education programs focused on the youngest amongst us—3 to 6 year olds. Working with early childhood educators, medical professionals, and environmental scientists, HealthStart has developed a health education curriculum and school nutrition program that teaches young children how their body’s work and about the food and fitness each body system needs for good health so they can make good health choices. Janet Greenwood Shepard is a consultant in Missouri and Texas specializing in family engagement, coordinated health programs, school age care, and early learning environments. She is a member of TECPDS and is a Healthy Child Care Texas Consultant. She holds a BS in Child Development, a MA in Family Studies from Southeast Missouri State University and has earned more than 80 additional hours in Human Development from the University of Missouri. She has worked in youth development, served as an adjunct, and spent nearly twenty years with Practical Parenting Partnerships writing, marketing, and presenting training and resources for educators, Pre-K through High School, on family engagement.

Since PPP closed she has worked as a consultant including completing Environmental Rating Scales in early childhood classrooms in Missouri. Warren Blake Baker, a graduate of the University of North Texas Masters in Business program, started a career in child care in 2005, at the beginning of the financial crisis and is currently a Board of Director for the Austin Housing Authority, and various other boards. Throughout his career path he has managed to start a Non-Profit that has expanded childcare operations from two centers in 2005 to nine centers across the city of Austin, Texas and one in Houston, Texas. Through his leadership he has dealt with all forms of family, staff, and board of Directors.

JR Schumann is an Independent Certified Coach, Teacher, and Speaker with the John Maxwell Team. JR feels that leadership is the difference maker and the deal breaker. It’s how we grow organizations. It’s how we impact lives. But, as you also know, leadership cannot be an idea we simply talk about; leadership is the action we must live out. Julia Douch is an Early Childhood Educator who began her journey in 1999 working as a Head Start Teacher. She then furthered her career by moving on to a Center Administrator and now her present position as a Manager of Center Operations. She specializes in Supervision, Human Resource Leadership & Development, Maintaining a Healthy & Safe Environment and Responsive Interaction & Guidance. She holds an AA in Childcare and Development from Lone Star College, BA in Early Childhood Education Admin, Masters in Public Administration and a Master’s in Education from Ashford University. She also is a Mastered Level registered trainer with Texas Early Childhood Professional Development System #2021, has a Child Care Director Certificate from Lone Star College, and is a licensed Director with Texas Department of Family and Protective Services—Child Care Licensing Division. Julia has resided in Houston, Texas her entire life and considered herself a faithful Houstonian. Courtney Clark is the luckiest unlucky person in the world. At age 26, Courtney beat melanoma. But five years post-cancer routine follow up scans detected an aneurysm in her brain that was close to hemorrhaging. Courtney underwent a series of brain surgeries at age 31 to remove the aneurysm. Today, Courtney builds resilience in teams and individuals who need to handle change and challenge without resentment. Her presentations are designed to help you adapt when the stakes are high and life doesn’t go according to plan. She is passionate about sharing her techniques for bouncing back, letting go of the plan, and getting clarity when life, love, or work throw you a curve ball. Courtney is the founder of Austin Involved, a nonprofit connecting young professionals to meaningful volunteer opportunities. She believes deeply in the power of philanthropy as a tool to help people get the perspective that leads to resilience. She has her Master’s Degree in Philanthropy from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, where her graduate research focused on the role of philanthropy in helping people heal from traumatic events. Her research was granted the University’s Outstanding Graduate Research award. Courtney has been honored with the Leadership Austin Ascendant Award, recognized by Austin Monthly Magazine as one of “20 in their 30’s,” and of honored as one of 2012’s “New Philanthropists” by Giving City magazine. Courtney’s experience in the community also helped her grow her family. Soon after launching Austin Involved, Courtney and her husband, Jamie, were running a volunteer event when they met a young high school student with dreams of college and success as a musician. Today, Courtney and Jamie are Anthony’s proud parents, and Courtney can often be seen wearing her “UNT Mom” t-shirt around town. Courtney, Jamie, and Anthony live in Austin, Texas, with so many rescue animals they have lost count. Natasha Owoseni is the Founder, Presenter & Executive Owner of Integrity Training & Professional Services. She has numerous years of education experience in both Elementary School, High School, Church Sunday School Teaching (Adults and Youth) and Childcare Experience. She has owned an In Home Childcare for three years and will reopen in summer 2015, she has been an Assistant Director and Administrator in Childcare Centers in Arkansas and Texas. In 2008, Natasha officially opened Integrity Training and Professional Services, which offers, Development Courses to business owners in every industry. Natasha provides Staff & Administrative trainings and specializes in Business startup. Leadership Development, Professional Administration, Effective Communication, Vision and Purpose planning and implementation, Ethics/ Integrity and Professionalism in the Corporate setting and so much more. Natasha has had a love and passion for administration and education. Her goal, as a Leadership Developer, is to transform business leaders from being average to becoming the best in their industry. She is also passionate, as it concerns entrepreneurship, leadership, integrity and professionalism. She believes each person has a given talent or gift which can be converted into a successful, service-based business. childcare home or center and she provides self-study packets, per DFPS Professionalism Development trainings.

Jeannie Young works as a Program Specialist for Child Care Licensing. Jeannie's area of specialty is the Texas Child Care Minimum Standards. Before moving to the specialist role, Jeannie was a Licensing Supervisor for the Austin area and began in Licensing as a Field Representative. Jeannie has completed training in the Child Care Investigator specialty of working abuse and neglect with child in care. Jeannie is also a Child Care Health Consultant. Before coming to Licensing, Jeannie served as an Assessor with NAEYC and worked as a consultant with the University of Colorado, Denver on a quality improvement initiative utilizing the ECERS and ITERS rating scales. Jeannie's experience with NAEYC, CU Denver and Licensing has provided her the unique opportunity to evaluate and educate many providers within varying demographics and socioeconomic areas. Jeannie has also worked as a Center Director with corporate child care and a nonprofit center. Jeannie's commitment to quality care for children led to the NAEYC accreditation for both centers under her leadership. Jeannie has loved working with children since her first babysitting job for 4 boys at age 12. Her drive is to be an advocate for all children that are in care outside of their homes. Jeannie has a desire to educate licensing staff, providers and the public that is served by child care. All children deserve the opportunity to stay in a high quality out of home environment that reduces the risk to children in care. Jeannie currently serves on the TEACH Advisory Council, TECPDS Advisory Council, Early Childhood Health and Nutrition Interagency Council, and Texas Training and Technical Assistance Collaborative Partners and Texas Partnership for Out of School Time Advisor(TXPOST). Jeannie is the busy mom to 3 boys: twins (tweens) and a singleton (teenager)! Her free time is spent following the boys around on game fields from football, baseball, basketball, and track. Heather Hardesty is the current Owner and CEO of Kinderdance Austin. Kinderdance Austin is a mobile dance and gymnastics program for children ages 2-12 years old. Ms. Hardesty is an area developer in the Austin area and has ran a successful franchise for 12 years and has been dancing for over 30 years. Ms. Hardesty is one of the top performing franchisees in the Kinderdance network. She is a yearly presenter at the annual Kinderdance conference and throughout the year contributes new ideas to the franchise system so that other franchisees may grow their businesses as well. With a degree in public relations and dance from Texas Tech University, Ms. Hardesty has been successful over the years in bringing awareness to the early childhood community of the importance of dance and movement to the growth and development of the young child. Melissa Ply has had a variety of experiences working with young children and on their behalf. She completed her student teaching in Holland and worked in the elementary school, later moving and becoming a family home day care provider. After completing a B.A. in Elem. Ed, Melissa was able to attend a Reggio Emilia Symposium and visit classrooms in Europe while working on her master’s degree in early childhood education. She came back to the states as a director for an Air Force child care center and has participated in many accreditation visits from NAEYC. For the last seven years, she has worked with UT’s Children’s Learning Institute by providing EC professional development followed up with classroom visits for working individually with the teachers. Melissa is a past-President of Austin AEYC, the Secretary for Texas AEYC, a Master Regional Trainer, and a Professional Development Specialist for the Council for Professional Recognition. Seth Winick is a veteran strategist and communicator who blends issue advocacy, management, and communications into comprehensive local, state, and federal campaigns for various clients of HRWK. Seth counsels public and private sector organizations involved in education, emerging technologies, affordable housing, and health care. His extensive work in public education spans the P-16 continuum; including early care and education, public charter schools, assessment research and development, classroom technology, and related policy reform efforts. Winick has experience in state and federal relations, and has managed statewide, regional, and national issue campaigns. Ann Benson, a music specialist and bilingual educator, brings the Spanish language and culture to life for children with song, rhythm, repetition and the use of the creative imagination. Somos Amigos was conceived in 1997 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at her Musical Beginnings parent/ child music studio and has been enjoyed by hundreds of children and parents in private and public schools. Miss Benson was a presenter at the Adelante! Teachers Conference at the University of Texas in 2014 and she will be featured on KVUE television evening news in February of this year. Vickey M. Burton (Texas Registry #1180) is an “educarer” who desires to reach the exceptional needs of all children and their families. Vickey is a known speaker (registered with the TECECDS trainer registry) and child care expert with 20 + years of child care ministry experience. She has a passion to minister to children, families, and teachers. Vickey’s passion and gift is providing sound advice and skills needed to

help parents, teachers, and children as they overcome the many obstacles they face in dealing with and raising children. Vickey presents a loving Christian approach to nurturing families along with a mixture of God’s humor. As a speaker, trainer, and home family child care owner, Vickey has assisted countless families. She is available to speak at seminars or hold advance training sessions at your location. She can provide fun and creative approaches to assist parents, childcare workers, teachers, church ministry volunteers and others who work with children in other capacities with proven methods needed to help with challenging behavior and how to love/ teach children in general. Vickey’s steadfast devotion to use her life to make an incredible mark on the world has led her not only into child care but to pursue an advanced education in the field of child development and teaching others what she has learned. She has earned a Bachelor of Science (Occupational Education) Degree in Early Childhood Development from Wayland Baptist University. Sugandha Jain is a Professional Development Specialist at The Council for Professional Recognition. She is also Master Registered Texas Trainer and Adjunct Instructor at Austin Community College. She works as the Accreditation Specialist at Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy. She received her Master’s degree in Developmental Psychology at the University of Texas at Dallas. Sugandha is an award winning writer on psychosocial issues related to children, adolescents and families; her work can be found in Parent: Wise Austin magazine, Texas Family magazine, Parenting Orange County magazine and Moralmetric website. Ms. Jain has also taught in Austin and Ottawa, Canada at all levels, PK- high school. She is a Validator at Association for Early Learning Leaders. In 2009, she co-authored a book on nurturing the emotional intelligence of children. With more than twelve years child care experience, Stephanie Retherford, is passionate about the child care industry. She believes that all children deserve quality and educational child care and is proud to have provided such to thousands of families over her career. Stephanie sparked the beginning of her jumpstart in the industry by reading a newspaper help wanted ad in 2002 and thinking to herself, “I could be a Preschool teacher.” Self-acclaimed not the teacher she’s sure she would have hired, Stephanie learned from her peers and from children along the way to eventually be a teacher in every position and classroom. Since then she has been everything from an Office Manager, Assistant Director, (and some days the cook, the plumber, the janitor, the wrestling referee, the principal, etc. etc.) to a Director, a Director of a large capacity child care center, and is currently working on a Regional Level as a Special Programs Coordinator with Children’s Learning Adventure. Stephanie carries with her a million funny and heartwarming stories by those who have taught her the most… the children she has been privileged to love and care for. In addition to her passion for children and the schools that she loves, Stephanie is fueled with positivity and a drive to be a blessing to others. Through personal life experiences Stephanie has found that being positive, no matter what the circumstance, the journey in life can be an incredible ride. She looks up to her great mentor, New York Times bestselling author and keynote speaker, Jon Gordon. In 2013 she was privileged to mix business with pleasure and share Jon Gordon with her industry at a state conference that she planned and hosted. In 2015 she I looking forward to bringing John back to Dallas, Texas to train on his most recent book, The Carpenter, at the fall 2015 Texas Licensed Child Care Association conference. She is highly motivated with a passion for the education of young children. She has served as a Family and Consumer Services teacher training high school students in the area of Early Childhood Education for 33 years. She has served as the Director of Elgin ISD Child Development Center for 10 years. She was instrumental in securing the funding, facility design and staff training for the center. In addition to serving as Director she is also an active trainer with the Texas Trainer Registry. Elgin ISD Child Development Center has a 4 star rating with the Texas Workforce. The center provides developmentally appropriate care for children of teen parents, special needs PPCD children and district employees. It also serves as a lab site for Elgin High School Ready, Set, Teach students.
