What I Need to Know

This module on Organic Agriculture 9 will be of great help to the Technology

and Livelihood Education students. This has been conceptualized to equip them

with the basic knowledge, skills, positive values and attitudes toward raising

organic chicken activities. It provides concepts necessary to equip them to face the

challenges ahead for this time of the pandemic. Lessons are prepared in such a way

that it will respond to the needs of teachers and students in this subject area.

Quarter 1 has only one lesson and created seven (7) modules intended for seven

Lesson

1 Raising Organic Chicken

Learning to raise organic chicken for the family is an enjoyable activity if

one tries to learn and put interest in it. Raising organic chicken is a skill that can

be developed by every member through constant practice. For a start, one can

begin raising organic chicken in your backyard at home.

Raising organic chicken is both a profitable and worthwhile activity given the

interest and determination to learn. To raise organic chicken, you must know how

to identify the breed and strain select healthy stock and suitable housing.

What is It

Raising organic chicken becomes enjoyable if you know first how to identify

breeds/strains of chicken according to their purpose, either for meat and egg type

production. Knowing different kinds of chicken and its purpose will give you

knowledge of what chicken you want to raise.

Definitions of Terms Breed/Strain

A stock of animals or plants within a species having a distinctive appearance and typically having been developed by deliberate selection.

Broiler

Refers to domestic chickens reared for consumption of their meat

Layer hens

Domestic chickens reared for consumption of their eggs.

Native type chicken

Chickens found in one geographical location that developed unique physical characteristics, behavior, product attributes adapted to the local environment and

are products of selection with no infusion of exotic breeds for at least five (5) generations

Backyard farm

Refers to any farm or household raising at least one had of animal or bird and does not qualify as a commercial farm

Commercial farm

Refers to any farm which, for poultry chicken, satisfies at least one of the following conditions: a) 500 layers or 1,000 broilers, or b) 100 layers and 100

broilers if raised in combination

Free Range

A system of production that raises chickens in a confined environment while allowing the birds to exhibit their natural behavior and allowing them access to

forage, grasses, insects, and sunlight. Free range production may be further

classified into

a. Pasture raised

A method of production where adult birds (layers) are kept on pasture 12

months of the year, in an outside area that is mainly covered with living vegetation. The birds have access to the pasture through exits from fixed or mobile houses,

and covered verandas if present. They are kept indoors at night for protection from predators but it is prohibited to keep them continually indoors 24 hours per day

without access to pasture for more than 14 consecutive days.

b. Traditional free range

A method of production that exceeds the minimum requirements (e.g.

harvest age) for free range production.

Hen

A female bird, especially of a domestic fowl.

Rooster

A male domestic chicken.

Chick

A young bird, especially one newly hatched.

Hybrid

The offspring of two animals of different breeds.

Purebred

An animal bred from parents of the same breed or variety.
