Balls are for playing with and having fun. You can throw balls, hit them, kick them, roll them and bounce them. Balls can be big like a soccer ball or small like a golf ball. They are usually round except for a rugby ball that is oval. Some balls are hard and solid like a ten-pin bowling ball while a beach ball is soft and must be blown up with air.

We wear shoes to protect our feet and keep them warm in winter. Gumboots keep your feet dry when walking through puddles, takkies protect your feet from stones and thorns when walking through the veld, slippers keep your feet warm in winter and soccer boots give you a good grip on the grass so that you don’t slip during a game.

Books are very useful. You write in exercise books with pens and pencils at school, or you can use a book for keeping a diary about your thoughts and ideas. Other books are filled with words and pictures for you to read, and still other books are for colouring in and playing fun games with words.

Leaves grow on trees and plants. They provide us with shade. Some trees lose their leaves in autumn. The leaves turn from green to red, orange or yellow and eventually brown. Then they fall off the tree, growing back again in spring. Some trees do not lose their leaves. They are called evergreen trees.

Most buttons are found on shirts, jerseys, trousers and dresses. They are used to join two sides of an item of clothing to close it. The button is on one side and the buttonhole is on the other. If a button falls off, it must be sewn back on to with a needle and thread.
