Hello everyone,

In the month of June we conducted the XXXII Capt. George Mathias Memorial Inter Club Snooker Tournament 2015. We had a super response. The Club had 5 teams and 18 teams from other clubs took part in this prestigious event. Sadly the Catholic Club “C” team consisting of Sam Texeira, Vivan Sequeira and Anand Paul lost in the semi finals (better luck next time) .I would like to congratulate The Indian Gymkhana who took the trophy by beating HBCC Club “A” 2-0 in the finals which was witnessed by a packed audience.

2 Fabulous turnout, well organized event, excellent food & refreshments, & lots of exciting bridge hands, all in all, a gala Saturday for bridge lovers. Brian, Cyril, Gavin, on behalf of our bridge community my appeal is such a popular yearly event should have two day status from next year, you have to ensure it happens:)

Cheers,Koushik.

3 Hi!The 2nd Annual Catholic Club Bridge Tournament held on June 6, 2015, had the record-highest turnout of 56 pairs (28 tables) for match point pairs event and 24 teams for Board-a-Match event. We thank Catholic Club and particularly Brian Albuquerque, President, Gavin Cordeiro, Cyril Mani, Rex D’Souza and the bridge playing members of Catholic Club for their wonderful hospitality and excellent playing conditions. The tournament was inaugurated by Brian. Satyan, as always, most efficiently directed the tournament. Special thanks to Mukesh Ghatiya for scoring and giving us the pairs results within minutes after completion of the event. Thanks Gavin for your valuable support and encouragement in promoting bridge in Catholic Club, where we love to come on Tuesday evenings.

There was tremendous excitement in the air, as all the WTGW regulars braved the incessant downpour and heavy flooding to converge at the Catholic Club for the latest round of What’s the Good Word, on the 29th of May, 2015.

Library

For the very first time, it was the young children who conducted the entire show, right from conception to implementation. The team comprising of Alicia and Aaron Augustine, Jason and Ethan Dsouza and Leo, Aarya, Nihal, Neysa and Amal handled the entire show with panache.

The theme set was: “Back to School”, based on a range of topics extending from Chemistry, Biology, Physics, History, Geography to English! Needless to say, there wasn’t a single ‘un-sweaty’ collar in the room. All parents, grandparents including teachers were tested within a hairs breadth of their limits!

These kids showed us no mercy.. (hmmm….retribution time..?)

First place went to newcomers Kripa, Hiren, Rajit, Sylvia and Naveen Fernandes and the second place

went to Rhea, Nikhil, Vibha and Anil Misquith.

But the true stars of the show were the kids who single handedly organised and conducted the entire event.

We hope this encourages greater participation from many more of our young members and hope to see many more of you at the next event!

Leaving home with Half a Fridge!

Every iBrowse meet is exciting and one never knows how the evening will pan out. It just evolves with author, moderator and audience input, changing the pace of the evening. The 12th June, with CP Belliappa and his book “ Victoria Gowramma : The last princess”, turned into a thoroughly interactive evening.

Soft spoken and erudite, Mr Belliappa explained the importance of deep research when writing a book of this nature. He revealed that it took him over 10 years to collect his material before actually writing the book. The four books that he needed for his research he looked for across the globe in a variety of libraries. But, they were out of print. To his great joy, he found them for free on the incredible world wide web (www) via the Google search engine.

iBrowse

So sitting in a rural estate in Coorg, he said he travelled the world virtually through his computer and worked on the book. He did however have the launch of the brand new novel in 2010 in the Nehru Centre in London, UK. The book is all about Gowramma the daughter of a Coorg Raja, who was taken under the mantle of Queen Victoria, when she showed interest in being converted to Christianity. The Queen added her name to Gowramma at the baptism and Victoria

Gowramma lived for the rest of her life in England, married to an English soldier for 30 years.

The book discussed was ‘The Scarlet Pimpernel’ by Baroness Orczy. Enjoyed by all iBrowsers the book was first published in 1905 and is written well over 100 years ago and yet makes for very enjoyable reading. The elusive Scarlet Pimpernel, ruthless French agent Chauvelin, the beautiful Lady Blakeney, the novel is full of swashbuckling adventure of the time. Ask Vani for a copy saved in the library, for those who would like to read it.

The author for July is Arathi Menon who is flying in from Mumbai to introduce her book “ Leaving home with half a Fridge.” So block the 10th July at 6pm in the Ballroom, and come hear Arathi’s story of how she managed with just half a fridge.
