    t was 1970, and 40-year-old artist/psychiatrist

Robert Akeley was walking down 49th Street

with a riend when he noticed a big pale green

Queen Anne Victorian house that was shining silver

in the light o the ull moon . . . with a For Sale sign

    on it.

Tis is how Robert came to live in emescal,

painting his graphic colorul acrylics in the barn out

back o the now aquamarine house he shares with a

community o riends and ellow artists.

A retrospective o Robert Akeleys work will

ning a long and still very active painting career. wo

month-long exhibitions will show a rotation o hispieces. Te opening or the rst show is Friday,

March 8th, and the second is April 5th. Both open-

ing receptions will eature ood, drink and music

o you live in Oakland? Would

you like to have a tree planted

in ront o your house? Are you

willing to water and take care o this tree or

the next couple o years?I signed up to get a street tree rom the

City o Oakland several years ago. In the

spring o 2007, the city cut the concrete

in ront o our house and planted a lovely

Ginkgo tree that grows taller and stronger

every year. We live close to the Highway 24,

and I wanted a tree to both help shade our

house and mitigate the impacts o reeway

    noise and pollution.

Since then, the citys tree plantingprogram has largely stopped due to bud-

get cuts. But thanks to the leadership o

Arthur Boone rom the SF Bay Chapter o

the Sierra Club, a group o volunteers has

continued to plant trees throughout the

city. On a recent Saturday morning, Arthur

and a crew o volunteers planted a rident

Maple in ront o my next-door-neighbors

house. One tree on a bare block oen in-spires other neighbors to do the same, and

it really makes a dierence. Imagine what

Oakland would look like i our urban tree

    canopy was thriving in neighborhoods

    throughout the city.

    Te Sierra Clubs Northern Alameda

County group has worked with Oakland city

    ofcials and ormer Councilmember Jane

Brunner, who contributed over $30,000 to

pay or trees and concrete cuts during the

last two years. But those unds are now all

used up. Te Sierra Club is currently ask-

ing homeowners interested in street trees

to contribute $50 per tree; the Sierra Club

hopes to drop that requirement when it is

    able to raise more money.

Volunteers are need to help dig holes, plant trees, and set stakes on Saturdays

rom 9 am to 1 pm. Groups rom schools,

churches, scouting troops and local busi-

nesses can arrange to work together on a

specic day. For more inormation, con-

Imagine wha Oaklandwould look like if our

urban ree canopy washriving in neighborhoods

A group of us started up the Temescrawlers

to organize together about the crime that

is happening in our neighborhood. We

meet every Wednesday at 9 pm in front

of Studio One at 365 45th Street to go for

a group walk around the neighborhood.

Lee Edwards, who is the head of our localNeighborhood Crime Prevention Council,

is part of this group and is a great resource

on what we can do to help ourselves since

the Oakland Police Department is not able

to make a big difference. Join us!
