IntroductionThere are two common requests we hear when working with the marketing teams at law firms across the world:

• We have offices in multiple cities and need to ensure consistency in the overall quality and “look” across all offices.

• We need to partner with a photographer that has the tools and expertise to manage a very complex project.

These two desires may sound counterintuitive and impossible. But to the GittingsLegal team of professional photographers, both points can be achieved when you utilize these 5 keys to a successful law firm photoshoot.

Create Consistency Across Office Locations

Most law firm photoshoots find their genesis as part of a new firm website project. Your photography partner should first

study the mood board created by the website design firm. The project lead should then scout all office locations to identify conference rooms or other spaces with the environment, office decor, and lighting that best aligns with the mood board and will ensure consistency. Consistency directly translates to quality. Ultimately, you want your attorneys to be presented as a cohesive team, even when they are located in different cities. Cohesiveness is a by-product of selecting shot locations with consistency in environment, decor, and lighting.

Schedule a Pilot Day

That approved mood board may have been visually impressive to the decision-making team at your law firm. However, we need to remember that most mood boards utilize stock photography with models in the photos. It can be quite challenging to replicate that same look. It’s beneficial, it’s wise to schedule a pilot day during which the photographer can shoot a few staff members and attorneys to determine the specific location, lighting, lens choices, camera settings, and cropping best align with the desired look.

Provide a “Day of” Photoshoot Checklist

With the amount of stress an attorney manages each day, the last thing they need to worry about are the details of a photoshoot. We recommend creating a checklist of tips that can be shared with each attorney. You should include direction about what they should wear, what they should consider regarding their hair, the amount of their body that will show in the photo, as well as reminders about the time and location.

#4 Create Multiple Quality Checkpoints

From overall composition, to the positioning of the attorney in the frame, to coloring, to lighting, to facial expression, there are so many details to hone and refine on a head shot. By creating multiple quality checkpoints throughout the shoot and post-production process, you are again ensuring quality and consistency across your entire firm. Here are some tactical examples:

• Photo specification document

• Offsite live review during session

• Post processing review to confirm file specification matching

• Final review prior receiving final portraits

Identify Photo Specifications

Each web design agency and law firm have different file requirements. Identifying the key specifications from file types, to cropping size, to file size and more, you eliminate a lot of unproductive exchanges between the photographer and the web design company. And eliminating back and forth leads to efficiency and time savings in the production schedule.

POSINGThe subject should not look into the camera. They should be comfortable and relaxed. Approachable. The selected pose should be in the act of talking, only as a response to the conversation.

CLOTHING ADJUSTMENTSShould be neat but not overly refined. The goal is for the final pose to appear that the photographer walked in while the subject was visiting with someone and captured a freat response to the conversation.

EXPRESSIONShould be comfortable, pleasant and positive. Not laughing as they may appear too casual and not professional.
