HELSINKI TO TALLINN

Shhh. Don’t tell the kids, but they’ll love the beautiful Baltics. So surprise them with a visit to the vibrant capitals of Finland and Estonia: Helsinki and Tallinn. You’ll find family fun with a capital F all the way and in between.

Way to go:

Here are a few ideas for your Baltic break.

Start at Helsinki’s Market Square, one of the best places to sample street food delicacies, like korvapuusti (cinnamon rolls). Then take in the rest of hip, happy Helsinki, aboard one of the oldest tramways in the world.

In the morning, catch the ferry across the Baltic to Tallinn, sailing past the formidable Fortress Suomenlinna as you wave ‘jäähyväiset’ to Helsinki.

When you arrive in Tallinn, stretch your legs with a family stroll around the part modern, part medieval city. When you’ve walked-up an appetite, try some black pudding in one of the local eateries, and get a real flavour of the place.

Also try:

ORLANDO TO NASHVILLE

A tale of two cities. For kids, Orlando needs no introduction as an absolute dream destination. And for music-loving families, there’s nowhere quite like Nashville, home of country music. You can see where we’re going with this one – something wonderful for everyone.

VANCOUVER TO CALGARY

The stunning drive between these two great cities is a true family road trip adventure. If you’d rather take it slow, you have stop-offs at Whistler for skiing, the Rocky Mountains for cycle rides, Icefield Parkway for glaciers, and Banff for a dip in the warm springs.

An A – B trip is perfect to ensure the whole family gets a wide variety of different experiences. The kids stay upbeat and entertained for the whole trip, while we get to see two or more different locations in the time we previously may have chosen to spend in one.”James Cracknell, Amex Travel Ambassador & Olympic Gold Medallist

OUR TOP TIPS FOR FAMILY TRIPS

Next time you’re travelling A to B, check our family travel tips first.

Before you go

Our top 5 things to pack:

Anti-motion bands

Portable rear view mirror to keep an eye on the back seats

Clip-on lights so adults can read once children have gone to sleep

An extension lead so everyone can charge devices at the same time

Tumble dryer sheets to keep laundry fresh on your travels.

Don’t forget:

Book child seats or invest in a universal one that fits any car

Sign up for travel updates and flight tracking apps

Consider a family railcard or bus pass to keep costs down.

During the journey

For entertainment:

Use headphone splitters so everyone can listen or watch at the same time

Play ‘observation bingo’ – write a list of ten things that your children might see, such as ‘a red car’. First to tick them all off is the winner.

For comfort:

To avoid motion sickness, choose seats on a lower deck in the middle of a boat, or at the front of a coach. Remember to take anti-motion bands, and (if necessary) tablets.

At your destination:

Use (previously taken) screenshots of maps and city tours so you can access them if Wi-Fi isn’t available

Use an all-terrain buggy even if your child is walking (it makes a great makeshift bed and shopping bag carrier).
