The Cleveland and George Gund foundations have committed a total of $286,500 to the ShakerHeights City School District for expanded efforts to close the achievement gap between Shaker’swhite and African American students. Specifically, the grants will support the District’s work with Ronald Ferguson, a Cleveland nativewho is now a lecturer and senior research associate at Harvard University. Ferguson, an emergingnational authority on the achievement gap, has surveyed Shaker students and uncovered factors hebelieves may lie at the heart of the problem.

Existing student programs such as the Minority Achievement Committee (MAC) at both the HighSchool and the Middle School will be expanded and introduced into lower grades. The District willimplement new parent education and support efforts -- in conjunction with groups such as Partnership2000 and Caring Communities Organized for Education -- to share ideas with parents about ways tomaximize achievement and to effectively inform parents about resources the School District makesavailable to help students. The District will also develop a speakers’ bureau and organize professionaldevelopment sessions aimed at helping teachers to elicit the best performance from each student. Aportion of The Cleveland Foundation’s grant has been set aside to help build local scholarly capacityto address achievement issues.

STATE AWARDS SECOND GRANT FOR ALTERNATIVE PROGRAM

Two grants from the Ohio Department of Education have assisted the School District and the ShakerYouth and Family Counseling Center in the creation of an alternative programfor students in grades K-6 who have difficulty functioning in the regular learning environment. Studentswho are consistently “acting out” or are seriously disruptive in their classroom are, in cooperation withtheir parents and the school, referred to the Youth and Family Counseling Center for 3 to 5 days ofintensive academic and behavioral work with a team of school counselors, psychologists, socialworkers and tutors. They set goals for appropriate behaviors upon return to the regular classroom, teach the student new interpersonal and social skills, and work with parents for consistent parentingskills that will facilitate positive growth and development.

The pilot program, funded with a $100,000 grant for the period May 1999 - September 2000, hasbeen so successful that the state has made a second grant, in the amount of $165,000, to continue andexpand on the program. Under the broadened program, trainers from the County-run PositiveEducation Program will provide summer training and ongoing support to Shaker teachers helpingdisruptive students behave appropriately in the classroom.
