Pedestrian plaza 2nd trialtoday

By Our Staff ReporterChennai Corporation will conduct a second trial run of the

pedestrian plaza from 8 a.m to 5 p.m on Saturday, Feb. 25 inT. Nagar. The first trial was conducted in November last year.

A 700-metre stretch between Thanikachalam Road junctionand Panagal Park will be made exclusive for pedestrians, andno private and public vehicles or hawking will be permitted.

A Corporation official told Mambalam Times that thedifference is that last time the trial was for three hours, but thistime it will be for the whole day to help officials understand thepros and cons in one of the city’s busiest areas.

Traffic diversions on Thyagaraya Road, from Panagal Parkto Dr. Nair Road, alternative parking areas and otherarrangements will be similar to those made during the previoustrial.

Buses and two-wheelers will be allowed to ply from PanagalPark to Anna Salai and vice versa on Thyagaraya Road.

Cars, autorickshaws, vans and share autos will be restricted. They will have to take a diversion on G. N. Chetty Road and turnright at Dr Nair Road to reach Anna Salai.

In the opposite direction, the diversion will be atThanikachalam Road and vehicles will have to turn right atVenkatanarayana Road to reach Panagal Park. Vehiculartraffic from G. N. Chetty Road to Rajamannar Street,Kamalabai Street, Muthukrishnan Street and fromVenkatanarayana Road to Nana Street, Sivagnanam Street,Deenadayalu Street, Sundaram Street, Sivaprakasam Street,Kannadasan Street, Bagavandham Street and Raja Streetwill be closed to public except for residents of the locality.

Parking spots will be available in Pondy Bazaar outsidePanagal Park, Chennai Middle School ground on PrakasamRoad, the proposed multi-level parking site on ThanikachalamRoad and between the junction of Boag Road and Dr. Nair Road.

The corporation has planned a range of recreational activitiesfor the public on Thyagaraya Road.

The result of the survey will be compiled and used to shapethe final design of the proposed pedestrian plaza.

When Panagal Park was put to test last November, pedestrians and residents enjoyed the reclaiming of a publicplace, but traders downed shutters in protest saying theirlivelihood will be affected by the project.

The Rs. 80-crore project was announced in 2012, which wasto be funded by the World Bank, and the Corporation releaseda blueprint of the plan in 2014.

But when the collaboration with World Bank was shelvedafter several procedural delays, the pedestrian plaza projectwas eventually included in Chennai’s smart city proposal.

Has narrow escape even as friendfalls to death from trainBy Our Staff Reporter

Praveen Raj, an employee in a private firm in Kodambakkam, diedafter falling from the footboard of an overcrowded compartment of arunning suburban train.

His friend C. Sudhakar (an accountant in a private firm in T. Nagar),who was standing next to him, managed to hold on to the pole andsurvived.

Seven passengers fell down and three lost their lives in the tragicincident that took place at around 9 a.m on Feb. 23 betweenPalavanthangal and St. Thomas Mount stations.

According to Sudhakar (a resident of Perungalathur), some otherboys were also travelling on the footboard at that time.

All of a sudden Praveen, who was standing next to him, was pulleddown by the other boys who had slipped off the train.

“I felt a jerk of somebody pulling me outwards, but managed to holdon to the pole tightly. There were screams and I soon realized that manyhad fallen off the train including my friend,” he said.

The alarm chain did not work and there was no other option exceptto wait for the train to reach Guindy station.

“I and a number of co-passengers ran on the tracks to the spot wherethe boys had fallen. My friend had got caught under the wheels of thetrain and his body parts were strewn on the tracks. The sight stillhaunts me,” he added.

“I am having nightmares and have taken a vow never to travel onthe footboard of a bus or a train,” he concluded.

Filthy service road

Sir, The service road near Kasi Theater flyover has remained filthywith dumped garbage and stagnant water for years. I have been livingin this locality for more than 22 years and have never seen this placebeing developed.

People dump garbage every day. Leftovers, plastic plates fromweddings and other stuff get scattered all over the road. A piece of treetrunk has remained stuck above the bridge since the flood in 2015.There is a spot in the service road where there is no barricade betweenthe road and river. (It actually isn’t a river. All we can see is garbagedumped in it and the Corporation never bothers to actually clean it orprovide a barricade).

All we residents seek is cleaning of the river and clearing of thegarbage. A proper barricade between the road and the river is alsonecessary for the safety of people who use this road every day.Leander Sachin, K. K. Nagar
