Rod Smith was inducted into Rotary just before Christmas, as the year’s work was drawing to a close. So Club Services Director John Suriano has wasted no time in

enlisting him for his Member Behind the Badge Talk, and there’s a reason for that. Come along and find out what it is and get to know our new member Rod just a little bit better. Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club Tuesday February 26th 2019 6:30pm for 7:00pm

clean up site is Patterson Reserve and surrounds on Auburn Road, Hawthorn East. We start at 9:30am and will finish by 12 noon, in time for a fun BBQ. Remember to bring some gloves and a hat. Looking forward to seeing you all there. Also, don’t forget to sign up on the Clean Up Australia Day website. To our new members and current members, I encourage you to visit the My Rotary Website. My Rotary is a place for members of Rotary to access tools and information to make your membership experience better. I also recommend a quick read of the Rotary Basics booklet, which will fast-track your understanding of what Rotary is all about. Just another reminder that on Tuesday 5th of March, the BBQ on the terrace has been cancelled. There will be no meeting that week. I encourage you to attend another club to do make ups or have a relaxing week off. Meetings will resume the following week. Every other event such as bread run will be running normally, please check your schedules. Our BBQ on the terrace will be moved to Tuesday the 26th March, we will be collecting payments for the event soon. On March the 19th we have a special presentation featuring Peter Fennick on the topic “Taking Responsibility for Ourselves, our Families and Society”. This will be a special Partners and Friends night and I encourage every member to bring your partners and friends to hear this wonderful presentation. Until then, have a great week in Rotary.

CLUB MEETING REPORT FEBRUARY 19TH, 2019 Rithy Ann ‘A World of Difference’’

Rithy, our guest speaker last Tuesday brought with him kindness, gentleness, humility, dedication, enthusiasm and passion: a passion which finds him giving his community in Cambodia new life and a future. He was accompanied by Rob Hines from the Rotary Club of Central Melbourne, his “chauffeur”. Rithy was about four years old when his mother, father, older brother and younger sister were slaughtered, victims in 1975 in the “killing fields” of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime of Pol Pot. Rithy was critically injured but was rescued by a woman in his village and ultimately by the monks who not only gave him a new name “Lay” but also an education. He managed to complete degrees in teaching and agriculture and a Masters in Business. He used his command of English to become a tour guide and this led to a successful career arranging tour guides. Rithy has spoken to many Rotary clubs in Australia about how his meeting with DG Bronwyn Stephens who had established World of Difference tours had led to opportunities to provide financial and physical assistance to villages in Cambodia. Bronwyn asked him “what does your community need”? At our meeting he outlined the progress which had commenced due to Rotary and Rithy’s endeavours. It was great to hear only a small part of Rithy’s inspirational story and we thank him for adding us to his very tight schedule . Cheryl Pisterman This is an extract. There is a lot of bad in this world, there is a lot of good and then there is Rithy Ann or Rithy Lay (more about that later).

Rotary’s Multi-District Conference brought together for the first time more than 1,500 Rotarians from four Victorian Districts, Districts 9800, 9810, 9820 and 9790, in an atmosphere of celebration and inspiration. The theme for the Conference was Inspire, Connect, Transform. Incorporating a Rotary Peace Forum, a Social Impact Forum and an Interact Forum running parallel to the main conference, the main event was opened by Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp and closed by renowned soprano Marina Prior. Featuring outstanding key note speakers and showcasing an impressive portfolio of Rotary projects, this was a conference to savour.

MULTI DISTRICT CONFERENCE TRULY AN INSPIRATION MELBOURNE CONVENTION AND EXHIBITION CENTRE Friday February 15th – 17th 2019

.

The Rotary Peace Forum held on February 15 at the Melbourne Convention Centre was a curtain-raiser to the first ever Multi-District Rotary Conference and was very successful and inspiring in many ways. Along with representatives from more than 200 Rotary clubs, I enjoyed the whole fantastic program, as Peace has always been my personal interest. I loved the theme of the forum: Peace Through Service – Rotary’s Road to Harmony. When we think of the underlying causes of conflicts including poverty, disease, hunger, lack of water and the lack of education, we should be proud of those Rotarians who have achieved so much through their hard work to make the world a more peaceful and harmonious place in which to live. As Paul Harris said: “The road to war is well paved, the road to peace is a wilderness”. Although I enjoyed all the sessions by our Rotary Peace Fellows, peace academics, police officers and community representatives, the keynote address “Nuclear Disarmament” by Dr. Tilman Ruff AM, Nobel Peace Laureate was wonderful. I’m very proud that Australia, as a non-nuclear nation, has been recognized globally for it’s campaigning for the abolition of nuclear weapons. It also gave me confidence that the humanitarian objective to abolish nuclear weapons will succeed eventually. The summit was very well organised. Thanks to all Rotarians whose efforts ensured that the Forum was such a great success.

GLENFERRIE GOSSIP

The club welcomed David Fallick to Rotary membership at the meeting on February 12th. Pictured here with President Charles, wife Kaye and Rotary mentor John Suriano, David has been a regular customer of the Boroondara Farmers Market for many years, and it was through the Market that he came to Rotary. David is a Publisher and his firm publishes, amongst other things, the online newsletter Your Life Choices,

an excellent journal aimed specifically at over 55s and one to which the editor of the Glenferrie Bulletin has been a subscriber for many years. Welcome to Rotary David. We look forward to working side by side with you and Kaye, Doing Good in the World through Rotary Service, for many years to come.

Weeks have gone by without the need for a report from the Almoner, but this week there are two Glenferrie Rotarians in the wars. A few days ago, Club Services Director John Suriano slipped and put his arm through a glass door, landing on the floor with a bump and a nasty cut above his right elbow. Wife Heather rushed him to Epworth Hospital in Richmond where they were able to stitch him up and send him home. “It was a bit of a shock”, said John. I’ll bet it was. Very glad to hear that you are on the mend John and will be well enough to come along to the meeting this Tuesday.

Welcome to Rotary David Fallick

Almoner’s Report

The other person who’s had a medical adventure recently is Glenferrie Rotarian and much admired Collingwood supporter Gary Stoneham, who has recently had an operation on his ankle. Unfortunately Gary will be laid up for about six weeks so will not be at club meetings for a while. Sorry that you are having so much inconvenience and discomfort Gary. Rest up and get well soon. We look forward to hearing the full story and welcoming you back to club meetings soon.

Support Thelma’s Ride for ROCAN President-Elect Thelma Hutchison is once again Riding for ROCAN, and will be participating in the District 9800 RoCan event from Sydney to Melbourne (1,100kms) over 8 days from 1-8 March.
