Approximately one third of all seniors in the United States are veterans who served in a war or are a spouse of a veteran who served in a war. With their remarkable service, veterans have earned a variety of benefits and services. Disap- pointingly, many of our veterans have faced undue hardships in the years after their return: disability, poor financial situations (and for younger veterans, difficulty getting a job), or even homeless- ness. Senior veterans are the most vulnerable group, and providing those veterans with services and advocacy is of the utmost importance. For senior veterans, there are a variety of benefits avail- able that may be able to help a veteran whose goal it is to age in place. However, many veterans simply do not know about these benefits, or they may not think they’re still eligible for them. Did you know that less than 30 percent of United States veterans eligible for the aid and attendance benefit know the benefit exists, and that they’re qualified for it? Roughly one out of four seniors could qualify for this ben- efit, which can pay up to $2,120 for a couple. The aid and attendance benefit can provide a signifi- cant amount of assistance for those older veterans living at home. Aid and Attendance (A&A) is an increased monthly pension. Veterans qualify if they meet certain conditions, including their level of medical need (the most crucial criteria for receiving this benefit), income, and assets. House- bound is an increased monthly pension amount paid if you are substantially confined to your place of residence because of a permanent disability. In either case, this benefit can make a difference in someone’s ability to age in place. Other benefits, like burial benefits, long-term care benefits, and compensation & special benefits are also available for qualifying veterans. These benefits can make a tremendous difference to a veteran. While just knowing they exist is a great first step, there are other obstacles that veterans may come across when trying to apply. In some cases, navigating the application process to many benefits can be a daunting process. Only those accredited by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs can help a veteran file an initial claim and are not permit- ted to charge a veteran for doing so; nonaccredited advocates can provide advice but cannot assist in filing claims. Locally, Berks County Veterans Affairs holds benefits presentations each Tuesday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. for veterans and their family members. These presentations take place at the offices at 726 Cherry Street, Reading, 19602. Dear Reader,Summer is fast approaching. How will you spend these beautiful summer days? Here at Berks Encore, we hope you’ll join us in living by the many “be” words that guide our work and life: be yourself, be alive, be fi t, be

creative, be loved.

Today I want to focus on one “be” word: creative. Staff recently joined the coloring class at our Reading center. Coloring classes also take place at Wernersville and Fleetwood centers on a regular basis. Beyond just giving you an opportunity to sit and chat with others while coloring—an activity that has stress-relief benefi ts—you also get to take home some pretty amazing artwork! Our centers have many opportunities like this: new, fun. I’m willing to bet our centers offer a variety of activities you have never done before (like coloring!) or give you an opportunity to play games that you loved playing years ago (check out our listings of card games!). Our centers are a wonderful place both to relive some fond memories while enjoying the new: new experiences, new friends.

It’s amazing how much better I feel when I’m using some of my creativity—for me, it’s knitting—and how fun these activities can be in a group. But the benefi ts of attending a center like Berks Encore and continuing to pursue fun activities go beyond the feeling of joy when you’re creating, laughing, talking, and remembering. Studies suggest

participating in activities of many types are essential to your quality of life: reducing your risk of depression, keeping your mind sharp, and maintaining your social connections. Simply put, if you’re looking to age well, being active, having fun, and exchanging a friendly hello or a conversation are vital. Join us today. Have an activity you’d like to see at one of our centers? Give us a call at 610-374-3195, x214.

Sincerely,LuAnn Oatman, President/CEO

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25

Berks Encore’s SENIOR EXPO will take place on

June 10 (see front page for information) provides veterans of all ages the chance to congregate and meet, as well as discover local resources, all in one convenient location. At this expo, veterans can learn more about their benefits and other veterans issues among trusted vendors.

If you’re not a veteran, but would like to help veterans locally or nationally, there are many simple ways to do so. Here are a few suggestions you may not be aware of:• Donate your frequent fl ier miles to the Hero Miles Program, which

helps bring family members to the bedside of injured service members. (fi sher.org/programs/hero-miles)

• Volunteer to drive a van for a veteran who needs transportation to a VA medical facility via Disabled American Veterans. (www.dav.org)

• Help the Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress collect veterans’ stories. If you are close to a veteran, help them share their stories. (www.loc.gov/vets/kit.html)

• Send a care package or letter via Operation Gratitude. (www.operationgratitude.com)

And, of course, saying thank you, while a simple gesture, can be extremely powerful.

Miller Center to Host the 10th Annual, Week-Long Senior Festival of the Arts

The Miller Center for the Arts at Reading Area Community College will host the 10th annual Senior Festival of the Arts (SFA), from Sunday, June 5 through Sunday, June 12, 2016. A non-juried art show for seniors, the SFA features over 100 works of art in seven categories and a week of free and low-cost events including films, workshops and performances and a spe-cial exhibit of art created by seniors with Alzheimer’s.

The festival opens on Sunday, June 5 with a 1:00 p.m. recep-tion followed by a Musical Revue at 2:00 p.m. that features tap dancing, piano music and a choir, all by senior entertainers. The exhibit will be open daily from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with special events featured throughout the week. On Tuesday, seniors (of all skill levels) can participate in a painting work-shop led by artist, Amanda Condict, where they will complete a scene of Reading, PA, and Wednesday, the documentary film about Cuba Unfinished Spaces will be shown. Artist Amy Schade will direct a demonstration/lecture on Thursday and Friday will include a screening of The A rt of the Steal, a film that explores the controversy surrounding the priceless art col-lection of millionaire Dr. Albert C. Barnes. The festival will close with a 4:00 p.m. Second Sunday recital by the celebrated young pianist, Lindsay Garritson.

The purpose of the SFA is to create an awareness of and

support for the artistic talent of seniors in our community. RACC is proud to serve as the primary sponsor of this event along with a host of community sponsors, many of whom have supported the event for more than the ten years it has been at RACC. A committee composed of artists, healthcare and senior services providers, business professionals come together to continue the effort that Nancee Lemmerhart spearheaded 14 years ago.

For more information about the Senior Festival of the Arts, or to register for the Painting Workshop for Seniors please call 610.374.4721 x5509 or go to the events page at www.racc.edu/millercenter. Admission to the exhibit, films and lecture demonstration are free.

Grocery Shopping Program

Berks Encore’s Grocery Shopping Program,

a partnership with Redner’s Warehouse

Markets, offers a tremendous service to

older adults. If you’re over 50 years of age

and have difficulty getting to a grocery store or doing

your own shopping, Berks Encore will try to find a volunteer to do

your shopping and delivery groceries to your home on your regular

basis. Grocery orders are taken by Berks Encore volunteers each week

and volunteer shoppers purchase the groceries at a local Redner’s

Warehouse Markets location. When groceries are delivered, the client

pays for them with a check made out to Berks Encore, along with a $5

handling fee. Orders can be taken weekly or less frequently and are

limited to 25 items.

It’s a wonderful program that can help older adults live

independent lives. But we need your help to keep it running!

Volunteers are needed to shop for a growing list of clients. It’s a small

time commitment that makes a big impact on a senior’s daily life. Call

us at 610-374-3195 to learn more about the program or find out how

you can become a volunteer.

Given the growing evidence that people can reduce their risk of cognitive decline, the Alzheimer’s Association and its experts share Ten Ways to Love Your Brain, tips that may reduce the risk of cognitive decline:

1. Break a sweat – Engage in regular cardiovascular exercise that elevates your heart rate and increases blood fl ow to the brain and body. Several studies have found an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline.

2. Hit the books – Formal education in any stage of life will help reduce your risk of cognitive decline and dementia. For example, take a class at a local college, community center or online.

3. Butt out – Evidence shows that smoking increases risk of cognitive decline. Quitting smoking can reduce that risk to levels comparable to those who have not smoked.

4. Follow your heart – Evidence shows that risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke - obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes - negatively impact your cognitive health. Take care of your heart, and your brain just might follow.

5. Heads up! – Brain injury can raise your risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Wear a seat belt, use a helmet when playing contact sports or riding a bike, and take steps to prevent falls.

6. Fuel up right – Eat a healthy and balanced diet that is lower in fat and higher in vegetables and fruit to help reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Although research on diet and cognitive function is limited, certain diets, including Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to risk reduction. The Mediterranean diet incorporates diff erent principles of healthy eating that are typically found in the areas bordering the Mediterranean Sea.

7. Catch some zzz’s – Not getting enough sleep due to conditions like insomnia or sleep apnea may result in problems with memory and thinking.

8. Take care of your mental health – Some studies link a history of depression with increased risk of cognitive decline, so seek medical treatment if you have symptoms of depression, anxiety or other mental health concerns. Also, fi nd ways to manage stress.

9. Buddy up – Staying socially engaged may support brain health. Pursue social activities that are meaningful to you. Find ways to be part of your local community – if you love animals, consider volunteering at a local shelter. Or, just share activities with friends and family.

10. Stump yourself – Challenge and activate your mind. Complete a jigsaw puzzle. Do something artistic. Play games, such as bridge, that make you think strategically. Challenging your mind may have short and long-term benefi ts for your brain.

At any age, there are lifestyle habits we can adopt to help maintain or even potentially improve our health. These habits may also help to keep our brains healthy as we age and possibly delay the onset of cognitive decline. To help people age well, the Alzheimer’s Association® offers the Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research program. This workshop covers four areas of lifestyle habits that are as-sociated with healthy aging:

• Cognitive activity• Physical health and exercise• Diet and nutrition• Social engagement

In each area, we discuss what we know, drawing on current research, as well as what we can do — steps to take now to improve or maintain overall health in each area. Healthy Liv-ing for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research is designed for individuals of any age who are looking for informa-tion on ways to age as well as possible. For more information, contact the Alzheimer’s Association at [email protected] or

It’s is an unfortunate reality that older Americans are often the unwitting target of scammers and con artists.

In 2015, a study by True Link Financial estimated that seniors lose $36.48 billion each year due to elder finan-cial abuse. What’s even worse is that about $17 billion a year of that figure comes from deceptive but legal tactics designed to take advantage of older Americans.

While I believe there is more the General Assembly could be doing to protect the financial well-being of se-niors and I remain committed to exploring every poten-tial remedy, I wanted to remind you of some basic tactics to protect your wallet.

Scammers, no matter their con, often target seniors as they are more likely to have a nest egg and typically were raised to be polite and trusting. These con artists often spout claims that sound too good to be true and follow them up with high-pressure sales tactics. They’re counting on your manners to stop you from asking too many questions – don’t let them.

It isn’t rude to ask a salesman to verify his claims, and I encourage you to give every tempting offer a second look.

Remember: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Additionally, reputable businesses will normally allow a consumer to take time to think about a purchase. If you are in a situation where you’re not being given that option, it’s probably wise to walk away.

Also, the Internal Revenue Service will never contact you by phone demanding payment or seeking to verify information. The IRS will always contact you through the mail if there is an issue with your taxes. This is a common scam, especially around this time of year.

The True Link Financial study also found that a person who receives just one telemarketing call per day is likely to experience three times as much financial loss as someone who receives only occasional calls. I encourage

you to stem the tide of these annoyances by placing your number on the Do Not Call list. To enroll, call 1-888-777-3406 and provide your name, address and telephone number. Your information will remain on the list for five years.

If you believe that you or someone you know has been the victim of a scam, or if you believe you’ve recently been contacted by a con artist, I encourage you to con-tact the Attorney General’s Elder Abuse Unit at 1-866-623-2137.

Spring is finally here! I’m hopeful the stretches of warm weather we’ve had throughout the past few months will continue. When the weather is nice, one of my favorite things to do is to head outside and explore all our area has to offer.

One of the best ways to enjoy the outdoors is to take advantage of the wonderful fishing opportunities in our region. Fishing is one our state’s greatest pastimes, and is a fun activity for the whole family.

I want to remind you of some license rates you may want to take advantage of. A senior resident lifetime fishing license costs $51.70, while an annual senior license is $11.70. Senior lifetime trout/salmon permits run from $25.70 to $81.70. For more information, please visit www.fishandboat.com/fishpub/summary/licenses.html.

I also wanted to let you know that my office now has Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program applications and can help you apply for this popular initiative.

The rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians 65 or older, widows and widowers 50 or older, and people with disabilities 18 or older. The income limit is $35,000 annually for homeowners and $15,000 yearly for renters. Half of Social Security is excluded and no one is disqualified because of Social Security cost-of-living adjustments.

The deadline to apply to this program is June 30, 2016, and my staff is prepared to help you fill out your application for free! Just contact my Reading office by calling 610-376-1529. We’re happy to help!

As always, if you have any questions on any state-related matter, please contact me.

LOOKING FOR YOUR IDEAS:

Cost-Savings Measures For Our Schools And Pennsylvania’s TaxpayersBy: Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks)

While very few people are ever opposed to investing more in our children, it is important that we ask the question, “How are our current dollars being spent in our schools?”

My wife and I and our children received a well-rounded public education so we understand first-hand the im-portance of ensuring that our schools have an adequate amount of funding in order to best prepare our future generations for success.

One way to increase funding for our local classrooms is to find savings elsewhere. That is why my staff and I are now reviewing a host of suggestions on how to reduce wasteful spending and inefficiencies in state government in order to put more money back into our classrooms and into the pockets of Pennsylvania’s taxpayers. Some cost-savings ideas we’ve received that we are currently examining include eliminating property taxes (which has astonishingly nearly tripled the rate of inflation) and consolidating school district health care plans.

Senate Resolution 250, a legislative initiative I in-troduced tasking the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee (LBFC) to examine the cost-savings effect of merging school district health care plans, received the support of Secretary Pedro Rivera of the Pennsylvania Department of Education during the Senate Appropria-tions Committee budget hearing in March. The LBFC reported in their analysis that more than $200 million could be saved each year if school districts merged into a statewide health care program. They also reported $72 million in savings during the program’s first year if a state-wide prescription drug benefit program was administered, another $100 million in cost-savings if all school districts participated in a health trust or consortium, as well as if a statewide insurance pool was created.

Another key component to examine when discussing education funding is property taxes, which is a top issue I hear about most from seniors in Berks County. Not only would seniors become the biggest beneficiaries if we eliminated the archaic school property tax once and for all, but we would also find a more equitable way to fund our public schools and restore homeownership for local residents.

Some of the other ideas the legislature is exploring as potential avenues for limiting the growth of school prop-erty taxes include: 1) a public referendum when increas-ing school property taxes; and 2) a unanimous vote or two-thirds vote of the school board in order to increase property taxes.

The idea of holding a public referendum is to provide

residents with the opportunity to become more involved in the decision-making process by allowing them to pro-vide their input regarding an increase in school property taxes – something that directly impacts them. Thirty-four states already require a similar measure. The concept of calling for a unanimous vote or two-thirds vote of the school board is designed as another method to stop the rapid increase in school property taxes.

It is clear given the many suggestions we’ve received on how to overcome bureaucratic inefficiencies and the rise of staggering taxes that we must continue to search for ways to maximize our current dollars without sacrificing our children’s education or jeopardizing the well-being of Pennsylvania’s residents. While this is by no means an overnight task, I am confident that we can make signifi-cant headway on some of these potential cost-savings plans and I look forward to seeing what other ideas we are presented with in the future.

If you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear from you! Please email your ideas to me at [email protected].

Sometimes a simple action can jumpstart a lively volunteer calling. Ingrid Harmsen, known as Inge or Inkie to friends, began volunteering close to four and a half years ago after she saw an ad in the local newspa-per for the Meals on Wheels program. While spots for drivers were filled, Inge began helping in the kitchen at the Birdsboro center.

Inge soon branched out to other volunteer roles at the center. She took advantage of an opening for Meals on Wheels drivers, and has been delivering ever since. After about a year of volun-teering, she began helping with Friday’s grocery bingo games, in addition to helping sort through Panera Bread donation deliver-ies. “She’s great,” says center manager Devan Boyer. “Anything we need her to do, she’s there.”

Volunteering, especially for the Meals on Wheels program, has been a rewarding experience, according to Inge. She ex-plains, “When I deliver, I do it by myself. Most people have a driver and runner, but I like to see the people that I deliver to,

so I always do it by myself. You really develop relationships with these people because sometimes that’s the only person that they see in a day. I always make it a point, if I know certain people don’t see anyone during the day, to ask them about their day and maybe talk for five or six minutes or so.”

Volunteering at Berks Encore was a natural fit for Inge, who is both active and enjoys being around other people: “It’s a win-win situation, because I cannot think of myself sitting at home and doing nothing.” She has befriended many other Birdsboro volunteers, and a group of friends go for walks and go to lunch on a regular basis. “This is a wonderful group of volunteers. We have a lot of fun,” she says.

Inge and her husband, Carel, live in Flying Hills. The couple moved here nearly 29 years ago, with their two children, from the Netherlands. While Inge recalls that she agreed to give living in America three years, it quickly became a good fit for her and her family. She and her husband still travel to the Netherlands on a yearly basis. Her two sons also live in Berks County, and with multiple grandchildren, Inge enjoys having them close by.

Berks Encore and the older adults of Berks County thank Inge for her years of work!

If you’re interested in staying active after retirement and helping others, contact Berks Encore to become a volunteer at 610-374-3195 or via email at [email protected].

Berks Encore Values your Trust and Support to Impact Local SeniorsBy Cameron Martin, Director of Development & Marketing

This last quarter we have seen troubling reports regarding the Red Cross and The Wounded Warrior Project. Each organization has spent millions of dollars of donated money in ways that have raised many red flags. Unfortunately for both organizations, very little of the financial support was reaching the people the support was intended to help. Supporting large organizations like this creates a lot of questions for the donors as they do not have the opportunity to directly see the tangible ways the gifts are being used to make an impact in someone’s life. The result then creates a level of mistrust when people are identifying what organizations they want to trust with their financial support. They want to know exactly what their donations are being used for each year. People want to give to organizations they trust and believe in .

You can trust Berks Encore and see our impact in many places throughout our community. That’s why Berks Encore is proud to have become Berks County’s leader and trusted advisor in non-profit services for senior citizens. For over 50 years you have trusted us to help enable older adults to achieve a better quality of life right here in your community of Berks County. Your support ensures this agency can provide over 600 meals each weekday to homebound seniors, help seniors save an average of $828 on their health insurance, operate six centers,

and provide nearly 150 health & wellness programs to keep our older adults active, healthy, and independent. Our annual reports are always online. For the most recent version, you can visit berksencore.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/2014-annual-report-for-board.pdf. You can also request a copy by calling 610-374-3195.

As we continue to grow, the need for our services never diminishes, and our ability to serve seniors and their families depends on your gifts and support. Did you know that you can now make a gift to support Berks Encore online? Gifts can be made online at berksencore.org/donate. Your gift helps to shape Berks Encore and position it to provide the greatest impact for Berks County’s senior citizens as well as their family members and caregivers. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or 610-374-3195 if you would like more information on any of these programs or if we can be of any other assistance to you. Thank you again for helping to shape Berks Encore and position it to provide the greatest impact for Berks County’s senior citizens as well as their families and caregivers.

A COMBAT VETERAN OF WWII REMEMBERSTribute to Our Timberwolves From Gen. Colins, VII Corps Commander

“I want to express my admiration and keen appreciation of the magnifi cent work you did for the VII Corps dur-ing our recent campaign: the mission of seizing the great industrial area Eschweiler-Weisweiler-Stolberg, which was assigned to the 104th Infantry Division in the fi rst phrase of our oprations, was a diffi cult, nasty task. The division cleared this important area in much shorter time than I had expected and with the minimum of loss. The speed with which this was accomplished is a tribute to the leadership, dash and sound training of the division.

The second phase involving the crossing of the Inde river and the advance to the Roer was even more diffi cult, but with characteristic skill and dash, in a series of brilliant night attacks, the 104th D ivision forced a crossing of the Inde and in a few days had cleared its entire sector to the Roer River. I regard the operation as one of the fi nest pieces of work accomplished by any unit of the VII corps since D-Day.”

BLANDON SENIOR CITIZENS Hello Senior Citizens! Monday, March 21, we had our fi rst trip for 2016 to Royal

Manor, Garfi eld, N.J. with Elite Coach Driver, Tim Weaver, and the show was “Easter Parade.” Everyone enjoyed the meal and show very much, and there were 44 persons that went along. Our next trip, Thursday, April 21 goes to NYC!

At the Wednesday, April 13 meeting we had a total atten-dance of 74 present and the refreshment committee for this meeting was Jack Holubec, Arlene / Howard Ruhf and giving this committee a hand was Betty Reber! “Thanks Betty!”

The program for today’s meeting was provided by Joan Pater-son and her service dog! Very good program! Thank You, Joan, for sharing your life and faith with us, living with a service dog!

Thursday, April 21, 49 travelers boarded the Elite Coach, at 7 a.m. with Art at the wheel, as we traveled to New York City, to the One World Observatory and also the 9/11 Museum.

Everyone had a wonderful time and we thank all that traveled along with us and a special thanks to all the non-members that made this trip possible!

At the Wednesday April 27 meeting we had 69 in atten-dance! Our program/speaker was Sherry Kutz, Client Relations Manager from Assured Assistance of Kenhorst Blvd., Read-ing. Her talk was on Home Care, wherever you live; getting started is easy, and Assured Assistance is an experienced team of compassionate non-medical caregivers. Everyone received a large bag with some information about the Assured Assistance and Paramount Living Aids, of which they are associated, FREE tickets to the Senior Day at FirstEnergy Stadium, on Monday, June 6, starting time 9:35 a.m. Some bags had candy and some had fruit in their bag. Thank You Sherry so much, for all the valuable information!

Refreshments provided for today’s meeting by Rick and Cle-onice Reidnauer!

PARISH-DANA RETIREESMark your calendar now for the annual Parish-Dana picnic on

Thursday, 23 June at Maier’s Grove in beautiful, pastoral Bland-on. It is located on Grove Road (where else?). I’m confi dent you’ll be able to fi nd it. Tickets are still at the rock-bottom price of $15. (Pertinent information will be provided on the ticket.) Meet new friends and infl uence people. We defi nitely need you to purchase the tickets in advance. (If everyone waits until picnic day, you will fi nd the grove empty.) The entire Blandon Police Force will be at the ready in case there is another melee between Berks County/Schuylkill County retirees.

Our meeting on Thursday, 2 June will be the fi nal get-togeth-er at Wegman’s Restaurant, 4401 Pottsville Pike (Route 61) in Reading--until September. The private dining room is on the lower level. The easy entrance is at the rear. Ample parking is always provided. The hot meals are served buffet-style promptly at noon. June’s entrée will be: roast of beef au jus, potatoes (sweet), corn (tender), rolls/butter, luscious salad w/bacon dress-ing. For dessert...isa krema! Mm-mm. I can hardly wait. All this for a mere $10 dollars!

We begin to congregate/meditate at 11 a.m.--or earlier--if you wish to enlighten us with your tales of woe. No speaker is sched-uled; however, President Carl Ramich has agreed to lead us in song selections. The song-fest should adjourn at approximately 1 p.m. All former employees from the Dana-Reading plant (management and union) are encouraged to attend.

A special shout-out goes to Olga Gehris who is 100 years young. Olga just happened to read this article several months ago, and has been a faithful reader ever since. (She never even worked at the Parish!)

AGAIN: Send/bring your check/cash for the picnic ASAP.Conce rns may be addressed to Larry Jambeau at parishretir-

Sadly, we note the passing of two of our committee members, June Schlicter of the presidential committee and Rod Huyett, Asst. Treasurer and husband of Sally Huyett who led our group many years. He was always there to lend a hand wherever needed and will be missed. Upcoming Programs: June 2 at 11:30 a.m.: Annual Picnic at Mohnton Memorial Park – sign

GOLDEN SENIORS OF ZION SPIES LUTHERAN CHURCH

Our meeting was called to order by our president Mary Jane Hetrick, followed by the pledge to the fl ag, prayer and song. We then sang Happy Birthday to our members with birthdays this month. Next month we will be having our everybody’s birthday party. Shirley Huhn read an article on the ForgottenSoldiers.org website; very interesting, check it out!!

Trips are fi lling up nicely, very few seats left. We all enjoy the trips, they are well-planned and we have a great bus driver. Mary Jane wrote a beautiful poem in honor of Dolly Fry, she was our previous trip coordinator who unexpectedly passed away last year.

Our entertainment for this meeting was Steve Walker. He played guitar and sang many favorites: “You Are My Sunshine,” “Bye Bye Blackbird,” and many others. We even sang along with most of these songs since they were all familiar songs we all knew.

Of course we can’t forget our goodies! The committee for the month of April supplied snacks and drinks. Again we had a very enjoyable meeting. Looking forward to next month and our everyone’s birthday party. Happy Spring to all!!!

SENIOR BERNERSIt was great to be back at our meeting today. Not only was the

entertainment, which was Hallie Vaughan portraying Eleanor Roosevelt, very interesting and educational, but the shepherd’s pie (made by Ruth Mease and one of my favorite dishes) was outstanding. Ruth gave me a generous portion because she knows I made a serious effort to come to the meeting just to eat it! But seriously it was great to see all my friends again. Senior Berners is just one big family. You always feel welcome there.

Another highlight of our meeting was Fay Beissel’s original poem about the creation of mothers. It was very appropriate since yesterday was Mother’s Day.

We celebrated three birthdays but no anniversaries this month.

Our program for next month will be Sam Ferranda on accordion. Sam is one of our members and is a very entertaining musician. Sam can really handle that accordion.

Bonnie Eiche announced that our next scheduled trip is July 13 to Mohegan Sun Casino. Cost is $28. Contact Bonnie (610-925-4163) if you would like to go along.

On June 21 we will be going to Applebee’s for our dining out fundraiser. At our July 11 meeting there will be a silent auction.

Don’t forget we meet the second Monday of each month at 1:00 p.m. at the Bern Lutheran Church on West Leesport Road. Come and see what we’re all about.

The business meeting was brief so we could all enjoy all those

homemade goodies as well as “shepherd’s pie”!Respectfully submitted,Marie J. Fies
