Book Club
Books are known for being an escape, for taking people into faraway lands in mythical places,
to meet incredible characters. Books are a wonderful creation dating back thousands of years
and are still a vital part of society today. So, in order to thoroughly appreciate these beautiful
creations, we should have a book club. Let’s look into the idea…
Many people think that books are a thing of the past now that the electronic world has allowed books to be on phones and electronic devices. But many people miss holding a paper book, leafing through pages instead of swiping a finger across a glass screen. Studies show that students who participate in book clubs show an increase in English and grammar test scores. Not only are book clubs great for increasing literary skill, but they are great for making friends. Book clubs allow for enthusiastic debate and conversation over books, especially those that present interesting, debatable topics. Book clubs can present books to an individual who might have never thought about reading it, or never liked that particular topic. By reading a vast array of books, the students can be introduced to many topics, time periods and cultures. Discussing the book can teach a lot about someone’s beliefs and feelings, creating strong relationships. Also, these clubs cover a variety of topics and genres. Books are great for entertaining any genre fan because there are millions of books in each category that touch many topics, not to mention characters that appeal to many people. Some people would see a book club as a waste of time because so many books are already read in English classes. Also, many students are involved in sports, music or
other after school activities and don’t have time for extra reading besides their homework. Furthermore, many teachers are already busy with their own work, so building on another extracurricular activity would prove very difficult for teachers. In addition, many students turn to movies instead of reading the book alternative because it is easier and quicker to sit and watch a two hour movie than sit and read a book that takes days or even weeks to read. When asked about having a book club, English teacher Mrs. Downey stated, “I would love to see a book club at our school! Probably the reason we do not have one is because of a lack of interest from our students...and their busy schedules, as well as the teachers' busy schedules. Also....many students are not "readers." If I could get students interested in reading a book above and beyond what we do in class, I would gladly work with students to form a book club.” In conclusion, I think we should have a book club because in doing so, many students will come to realize so much more about different cultures and beliefs. It is good to present these things to this generation while we are young while we have time to learn from these lessons that books teach us.
Editorial
December 18, 2014 Julie Webster Page 5 The month of December requires music. It’s a fact of life that comes with the Christmas season; sorry
for all the scrooges out there. Stations devote their entire playlists to the iconic tunes of the holiday
and strains of familiar seasonal hymns can be heard drifting down the halls of the B wing here at
Allen East. And what is the source of all this fine music? The one and only Allen East Choir!
Nothing has stopped the choir from their usual
mark of excellence this past year. The high school
rendition of the choir has performed on three
different days in the past week
alone.
On December 11th
, Mrs.
Spencer and the choir traveled
to the WTLW recording
station to sing for their
Holiday Musical Festival of
area choirs. They sang “Let
There Be Peace on Earth” with
Tevin Clum reciting scripture, “I Heard the Bells
on Christmas Day” as recorded by Casting
Crowns, and an alto feature, “Hallelujah Christ Is
Born.” The programming times of
their performance are yet to be
announced.
On Monday, December 15th
, the
choir performed at their second show
of the year. In addition to the songs
they sang at WTLW, they also
performed excerpts from “The
King.” Kendra Webster,
accompanied by her sister,
then took the spotlight with
their rendition of “Sweet Little
Jesus Boy,” followed by an “O Holy Night” trio of
Megan Lotz, Sydney Delgado, and Julie Webster.
This group of young ladies has become an
expected trio for every concert
this year. As a special surprise,
Mrs. Spencer also performed
“Have Yourself a Merry Little
Christmas.” The show was a
fan favorite.
As if that wasn’t enough, the
Royal Blues Advanced Choir
took one more musical venture
to the Lima Mall and Primrose Retirement
Community. The group branched into a couple a
capella songs including, “It’s Beginning to Look a
Lot Like Christmas” and “Carol of
the Bells.” The old ladies and
stressed shoppers loved seeing the
bright and shining faces of our
choir.
Now it is contest time for our
high school voices. Several different
soloists and ensembles will be
whiling away the hours in Mrs.
Spencer’s room, preparing for their judging on
January 17th
. It never slows down for the choir!
The choir in all their glory.

‘Tis the season for festive holiday music and fun; just what the band has ready for anyone
willing to listen! Even though marching season is over, there is no time to relax in the B Wing
José. Christmas is the high tide of music, and Mr. Dellifield was sure to of Allen East; no way,
have another success on his hands with the concert band’s first show, candy-cane and
evergreen style of course.
Instead of hosting another “Brassmas”
concert, our school musicians have been
working hard to perfect the age-old strains
of songs like “The Ukranian Bell Carol,”
“We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” and a
sing-along medley. The band also
performed a number featuring trumpets
Andy Kill, Miranda Dolan, Taylor Lloyd, and
Lucas Coon and trombones Brianna
Cotterman and Forrest Hager.
The size of the band has grown as well.
With the addition of saxophones, clarinets,
and flutes comes several musically inclined
football players including Nick Kaiser,
Trent Joseph, Caleb Austin, and Ethan
Grant. We talked to Caleb Austin about
his wonderful performance in the
percussion section for this Christmas
concert.
I understand you used to be in the
marching band. Do you miss it once
football season comes around?
Yes! I miss hanging out with some of
my friends from Brass.
Why did you stay in concert band?
Because I enjoy Mr. D and seeing my
friends.
What is your favorite part of band?
Hanging out with the percussion
section.
Do you plan on staying in both band and
football until you graduate?
Yes.
What was your favorite song from this
Christmas concert and why?
“The Little Drummer Boy” because I
play the mallets.
Who do you enjoy making music with the
most?
Ben Thayer because there’s never a
dull moment when he’s around.

Audra Dray is
my “bae”.
You may have seen her crash cymbals in brass or bump the ball in volleyball, but do
you really know her? Her name is Karrie LeSure and we were given the opportunity
to find out a little more about her. Read on to find out what she had to say!

Many people don’t know about all of the work that goes into being in CAM-AV. But you may
see this beautiful girl walking down the hallways, snapping shots, taking video, or down on the
field with the Brass twirling the flags in the dazzling lights. Today you will get to learn a little bit
more about senior Audra Dray about being in flags in the Mustang Brass!
Kasey: How long have you been in flags?
Audra: This is my second year. I started my junior
year.
K: What is your favorite memory about being in
flags?
A: I would say at last year’s
homecoming game when it
poured and we still had to
twirl the flags and mine
stuck to my face.
K: How do you feel about this
being your last year?
A: I’m really sad about it. I’m
going to miss everybody.
K: Who do you enjoy being with in Brass?
A: I would have to say everyone as a whole
because of the family atmosphere.
K: What are practices like for flags?
A: We do a routine over, and over, and over until
the routine has little to no mistakes. But we also
have a lot of down time and we use that time to
get to know each other.
K: Which flag is your favorite?
A: We have the “racecar” flag, which has different
sized boxes with different colors.
K: What is your favorite part of Brass?
A: My favorite part is probably going
to the games and spending Friday
nights with my friends.
K: What is your least favorite part of
Brass?
A: Sometimes you spend too much
time with someone and you just
want to kill each other (not
literally of course).
K: Did you do anything in Brass other than flags?
A: Nope.
K: Do you have anything else to add?
A: I play triangle in concert band, so look for me in the
concerts!

Movie
My favorite movie is The Notebook. It
stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel
McAdams. It is about a young couple
that meets at a carnival and
fall in love. I like this
movie because it
is really sad at
some parts, but
ends off a somewhat happy ending. It
is a funny movie in some parts too. It
never gets old to me and I have
watched it probably about 50 times.
Hanging with friends
I like to do is hang out with friends and go to
parties. I know I always see my friends and
school, but school is not somewhere we can
have fun and be ourselves without getting in
trouble. It’s nice every once in a while to get
out of the house to. When
me and my friends hang out
we’re usually just watching
a movie, out at a bonfire,
swimming, going out to
eat, shopping, or at a party.
Sometimes I hang out with my friends because
I may be having a bad day and they are there
for me when I need them because without my
friends, I wouldn’t have anyone to talk to about
my problems and that why I love to hang out
with my friends.
Chocolate Chip Cookies
My absolute favorite cookie in the
entire universe is a warm,
homemade, fresh out of the oven,
warm and gooey,
chocolate chip cookie. I
am known for being a
chocolate fanatic, so
it’s only fitting that
a chocolate chip cookie is part of my
favorites. I remember as a kid eating
the dough of the cookies my mom
used to make (secretly of course).
Some things from our childhood
never leave.
My Favorite Season
It’s the time of year where you bundle up
lightly in jeans and sweatshirts: it brings high
school football, and homecoming, bonfires and
costume parties. Halloween, Thanksgiving and
apple festivals are being celebrated all
throughout Ohio and
apple cider is on the
shelves of stores along
with pumpkin
rolls, pumpkin pie,
and even pumpkin
spice varieties of coffee. Fall is more than a
season to me. I love how the weather is warm
and sunny, yet a little chilly out. Then finally at
the end of the day you can cuddle up in a
blanket with some pumpkin spice coffee and
enjoy your time with your loved ones.

We all have those things that just grind our gears: nails screeching across the
blackboard, the smell of burnt rubber, squeaky voices. Four of our students have opened
up about their worst pet peeves, so here comes…Our Least Favorites!
Allergies As of last year in October, I went to
an immunologist to determine why
my asthma was so bad during the
soccer season. Low and behold, I was
allergic to approximately 14 different
things. Three big categories of my
allergens include ragweed, trees, and
grass. Since my diagnoses, I have been
getting two allergy shots every Sunday to
build up my immune system. Although
these shots have improved my breathing
and allergy symptoms greatly, I still hate
the allergies I have for causing such
problems in the first place.
Spanish
My least favorite class I have ever
taken is Spanish. I study and study
and yet still can’t learn it as well
as some of my classmates.
Spanish class is very hard for me and is my worst
class. It is hard to enjoy the class. I am slow at
Spanish and sometimes the class moves too fast for
me. This is why Spanish is my least favorite class.
Tourist Attraction
Museums, yuck. I do not
enjoy them whatsoever.
The worst part is that my
father and sister love them. Whenever we are on
vacation I get dragged to countless museums. I
would much rather be out doing something than in
a building reading signs and looking at wax figures.
Museums are a beautiful thing for history lovers,
but not for me.
My least favorite gum flavor is cinnamon. The
burning sensation and tears in your eyes might be
delightful for some of you, but to me it’s more of a
torture device than a nice chewing piece. Spearmint
or winter green is nice, juicy fruit is alright, but if you
give me cinnamon gum I will reject it. Cinnamon is
only good with breakfast foods like cinnamon toast,
bagels or anything else. Cinnamon gum flavor should
be used as pepper spray, a way to get away from
criminals, and a way to torture someone. You will
never see me chewing this abomination of gum.
