the Value and Values of Design
The practice of graphic design is
at another important pivot point.
On one side, we are witnessing a
massive new interest in interface
design, user experience, product and
application prototyping, image-
based advertising, and sustainable
design. Businesses, organizations and
governments rely upon designers to
create communication tools that will
quickly cut through the clutter and
motivate, educate, and connect with
busy and very demanding audiences.
On the other side, we are also seeing
the devaluation of the hard work that
goes into every successful design.
Designers everywhere are being asked
to work more quickly, more cheaply,
and with greater care than can be
reasonably delivered.
Graphic Designers of Canada turns 60
years of age in 2016 and there is no
better time to support it and other
organizations that care about the
practice of design and the future of
the design profession. The struggle
between design quality, speed, and
value will be with us forever – but
we need organizations and groups
of designers to ensure that we can
march together in unison and share in
the conversation. We need to be clear
to the business community and to
government that design is not a toy
and designers are not their playthings.
Designers hold the capacity to change
the world but they also need the
respect and resources to further their
work.
All of that is to say that it is an
honour to serve as current president
of GDC Manitoba. I and my colleagues
on the board stand on the shoulders
of 25 years of important work of our
predecessors in the province who
made the design profession shine.
A Year of Results
The year 2015 was a very fulfilling and
busy year for me and GDC Manitoba.
Our leadership successfully changed
hands in February and we began
the process of internally evaluating
membership needs and interests
to continue building a durable and
helpful association.
One of our first tasks was to take poll
of our membership. Nearly 80% of our
membership completed the survey,
which in and of itself says much
about the strength of our members.
Members also told us that 57% had
not attended a GDC event in some
time – though having access to more
events was very important.
Based on this poll, our goals for the
year were around visibility, relevance,
and community. As a board, we
worked very hard to address each of
these as we look to build an energized
base of new and seasoned members
who believe that design and the
design profession are more important
than ever.

A Few Highlights
GDC MB’s most visible activity in
2015 was bringing the inimitable
Aaron Draplin to Winnipeg. Thanks
to our partnership with New Media
Manitoba, Draplin visited the city
over the course of two days. He held
forth with graphic design students
at Red River College, where he was
ardently received. We also organized a
walking tour of downtown Winnipeg
ghost signs with Matt Cohen. This
was filmed by Handcraft Creative and
the resulting video is now online for
the world to see. The big event was
on November 6 at the Park Theatre,
where a sold out crowd had a chance
to see Draplin talk about his life, his
work, and his bold vision for making
beautiful things.
We also put on four very successful
PechaKucha Nights in Winnipeg over
the course of 2015. Approximately 45
speakers presented their thoughts
and ideas and challenges to hundreds
of people; and each speaker had
exactly 6 minutes and 40 seconds
to do it. Many special thanks to
Mel Archer for organizing PKN
Winnipeg, which starts conversations
about design and builds the design
community in the province. Additional
thanks to our print sponsor Vantage
Studios for their support!
We held many other great events,
including portfolio workshops,
mentoring, and a holiday party.
Importantly, we held a number of very
well-attended Embark events, where
a graphic designers, owners and
others shared their story of running
a business. Many thanks to Kevin
Guenther for his phenomenal work
in shaping and growing the Embark
project.
thank You
I want to thank all of the incredible
people that made GDC’s 2015 year a
reality.
Thanks to Carson Samson for
organizing us, connecting us, and
making us laugh (every once in
awhile). Thanks to John Lyttle for
making us look really, really good –
and for shaping the best social media
profile in the GDC. Thank you to Dean
Van De Walle for keeping our books
and keeping us sharp as knives. Thank
you to Aquila Samson for accurately
scribing our board meetings and for
herding us designers/cats. Thanks
to Doug Coates for his diligence in
reaching out to students, members
and prospective members and
keeping it light. And many thanks and
welcome to Marie Tully for stepping
into the events arena and slaying a
couple of dragons. (Knives, cats and
dragons are probably an odd mix, but
we’re going with it.)
I want to tie these thank yous to a
personal request. If you believe in the
importance of design and you live in
Manitoba, please join us as a member.
For $200 per year, you can make a
huge difference. If you’re a member
and want to take on a project or work
on an existing one, please let us
know. We need you and other active
members to keep the organization
moving forward, to put on great
events, and to develop opportunities
for designers. You can reach me
directly at [email protected].

Spring is here and with it comes
potholes, taxes, and the GDC
Manitoba Annual general meeting.
For a moment let’s reflect on 2015.
Survey results showed us that very
few members were attending GDC
events, so we upped the number
of events for you to pass on (I kid).
We did gangbusters on our staple
PechaKucha Night Winnipeg events,
and the Park Theatre could hardly
contain the mass of humanity
that gathered to hear popular
design darling Aaron Draplin in
November. Mr Draplin’s two-day
visit to Winnipeg was a coup for the
chapter. We are currently scouring
the internet (and scratching our
heads), in search of someone to
top him in Fall/Winter 2016.
Intrepid Membership chair Doug
Coates hosted two CGD portfolio
reviews (June and December), which
drew seven interested prospects,
and netted one new CGD. Did I have
anything to do with that? Well not
really, no. But I felt it was worth
reporting.
I’ll be the first to admit the Vice
President’s role is hard to define.
There are two types of people:
builders who well, build things; and
gardeners who tend the soil and keep
the machinery oiled. I am a gardener.
Most of the time I’m shaking hands,
patting backs and throwing out a
lot of “how are ya?” and “everybody
doing alright?”
Did you know that Manitoba is the
only GDC regional chapter that retains
the Vice President chair? I get some
ribbing from other chapters that I’m
the president in waiting. Whether or
not I am is entirely up to you. I’ll be
the first to say I’m not equipped to do
that job. Especially when compared
to my hard-working cohorts. A huge
thank you goes out to each of them
for all their hard work in 2015.
Did you also know that as a chapter,
our membership is near an all-time
low? We have lost 12% annually since
2008. Does that concern me? You
better believe it does. What troubles
me more is that this trend continues
to occur nation-wide. If numbers were
to tell the whole story, then our once
strong and influential society hobbles
into its sixty-first year a mere shadow
of itself. President Boardman and I
will be attending the national general
meeting in June, where this issue will
dominate the discussion. He and I
have much to add to the conversation,
but unless we speak for the body of
designers who make up our chapter,
we will be doing you a disservice.
I implore you to contact me (carson@
samsonstudios.ca or 204–999–7465),
and share your thoughts, concerns
and ideas. Please lend your voice
to the GDC cause. Better still, lend
your hearts and minds, your talents
and efforts to the betterment of our
industry and the revitalization of GDC.
Begin by committing to membership:
pay your fees. Financial stability
allows us to move forward with
projects and events that provide a
return on your investment. Volunteer
your time at events or on the board.
We need your help.
Finally, as a member of GDC you are
entitled to any and all resources and
assistance you may require. Tell us
what you need – demand the best
from your provincial and national GDC
– and expect results.
Thank you. Everybody doing all right?

Membership revenues for the four
quarters of 2015 fiscal were $2,729.00,
showing a decrease from 2014 of 22%.
Once again the Manitoba Chapter
hosted four successful PechaKucha
Night Winnipeg events. This year, we
report that PKN brought in $4,038.31
through at-the-door donations,
which is up 20% from 2014. PKN
expenses for the year (promotion,
rental, printing) were $2,709.05,
meaning that PKN continues to be a
successful event series. As with the
last two years, PKN has benefited
from a successful partnership with
Vantage Studios, who generously
donate printing services for the event
promotions and programs.
In late 2015 the GDC Manitoba
Chapter in partnership with New
Media Manitoba, hosted one of
our highest profile events in recent
years, the Aaron Draplin Road Show.
Consisting of a meeting-and-greet, a
tour of the RRC Graphic Design studio,
a walking tour of downtown, and the
main event speaking engagement
on the Friday evening. From poster
sales, tickets to the Friday event and
the meet-and-greet we were able to
generate $7,348.00. Expenses for the
event were $5,665.51, meaning the
event generated $1,682.49 from the
weeks events. New Media Manitoba
also reimbursed us for ½ of the
expenses for the event as our partner,
and split ½ the profits.
The GDC account as of December 31,
2015 was $20,632 which is up from
2014 where we sat at $19,657, an
increase of a modest $975.

CGD and GDC Membership –
the Numbers
Despite continued slippage in
membership numbers going back
to 2008 we realized an increase in
overall membership in 2015 up one to
62 members.
GDC Manitoba membership reflects
what’s been a national trend that has
been dropping since 2008 when the
Manitoba Chapter membership sat at
155. Since then we’ve seen an average
drop in membership of 11.75 members
per year.
When reviewing our lapsed member
list there are names of many
longstanding GDC members. Personal
conversation with a few of them
exposed a couple challenges GDC
Manitoba needs to explore further;
relevance, benefits, and value.
In the third quarter of 2015 GDC
National sent a new membership
book, card and decal to all CGD
members across the country. Part
of that initiative included sending a
letter to members who had lapsed
over the past two years encouraging
them renew. The letter sent to 19
past Manitoba CGD members in
conjunction with phone calls made at
a local level last summer resulted in 8
CGDs renewing their membership.
While an increase of one member
for 2015 may appear insignificant
it is the first year of the past 7 that
membership has been in the black.
Going into 2016 I believe our focus
for membership growth starts with
membership retention.
student Membership –
What can be learned?
On April 21, 2015, we had our annual
Portfolio One-on-One workshop
at the Kings Head and we offered
and advertised to both RRC and U
of M graphic design students. Four
students signed up to participated
and received valuable feedback
and advise from industry pros who
volunteered their time for the event.
Student membership numbers
continue to move downward as they
have since 2008. Efforts directed
specifically to graphic design students
including Portfolio One-on-One, and
in-class presentations (2) at Red River
College (RRC) and one presentation
to the graphic design class at the
University of Manitoba have not
had a positive impact on student
membership.
A recent survey completed during a
lunch talk to graphic design students
at RRC asked:
1) Are GDC student membership fees
affordable?
2) Do the One-on-One portfolio
reviews with professionals have
value?
3) Is the GDC relevant?
Most responses to the questions
indicated that the GDC is relevant and
annual membership fees affordable.
So, the question going into 2016
is – if we’re relevant and have value
what can be done to increase student
membership
eDUCAtIoN
In 2015 we had two portfolio
workshops, one in June, the other in
December. Attendance small at both
events however, the attendees were
engaging and took away information
that could allow them to make a
successful portfolio submission.
In the September of 2015, I spoke
to both the graphic design students
at RRC and U of M about the GDC,
what it is the GDC does, it’s role and
benefits of student membership.
GDC Manitoba VP Carson Samson and
I spoke to first year graphic design
students at RRC on the subject of
copyright as it relates to ownership
of imagery and created art. A short
pitch on the GDC wrapped up the
presentation.
Going into 2016 we will be expanding
our role with RRC by offering ‘lunch
talks’ relevant to the students and
exploring opportunities to work closer
with the U of M.

oVeRVIeW
It has been an event-filled and
galvanizing year for the Manitoba
chapter of the GDC! With a large-
scale event drawing attention
to Manitoba from around North
America, to smaller-scale events that
reinforce and grow the community
we have here, we have worked
towards these goals this past year.
There has been a changeover in who
holds the Events Chair position, and
we are grateful to Kevin Guenther
for getting the ball rolling for events
in 2015.
2015 GoALs AND
ACCoMPLIsHMeNts
Holding the Events Chair position
for the first part of this year’s MB
GDC board tenure, Kevin had set two
essential goals for his time in this
position. One, to focus on events
that improve the existing business
development events and to plan fun
and community focused events for
the members. Secondly, to continue
developing relationships with
Manitoba organizers.
Both goals were successfully
accomplished during his time in office.
He set the ball in motion for hosting
Aaron Draplin, a large-scale event that
we grew to include a meet and greet,
his engaging talk, and a tour of the
historic building signs in the Exchange
District in downtown Winnipeg. This
event not only engaged the designers
in the crowd at Draplin’s talk, but
also connected with organizations
such as New Media Manitoba and
branched out to collaborate with local
videography and tour guides.
Kevin also espoused Embark and what
good it does for the community as a key
event that allows people in Winnipeg’s
design realm to really connect with each
other with our stories.
We hosted a GDC Family BBQ that was
a chance to connect with designers
and their collective families without
any pressures of knowing design
jargon to fit in. Two more community-
building events followed, the National
Beers with Peers event, and our own,
locally brewed Beers With Peers.
Following Kevin’s departure from the
board, I was voted into the Events
Chair mantle from my current position
as a general member on the Events
Committee. We continued to work on
events in the planning at that time, as
well as new events. These included a
Holiday Party in conjunction with New
Media Manitoba, HTML for Designers,
and continuing with the Embark
series.
2016 GoALs
This upcoming year I am going to
continue with the upward motion set
forth by Kevin to have a balance of
events for our members that are both
informative and community building.
We, as a board, are interested in
hosting yearly speaker events as
they seem to be a great way to
empower our design community
in the knowledge base they have.
Ultimately, my goal for the MB GDC
and the events we host is to really
open up the design community by
allowing new and existing designers
to network and share their personal
sparks with each other.

We had another successful year with
PechaKucha night. There were four
events as usual, with one of them
being a partnered event with Craft
Manitoba. This event was a Makers
theme and went over quite well.
With our last themed event being
such a success, we’ve decided to have
another one. Our next event will be
a youth theme, where we will invite
high school students to present on
global issues.
This last year was our first with
the new PKN sub-committee. They
have worked hard and made these
events successful. A big thank you
to Roberta Hansen, Joepe Wolfe,
John Lyttle, Carisa Romans, Carson
Samson and Karen Niedzwiecki for all
you have done for PechaKucha Night
Winnipeg.

overview
Communications for GDC Manitoba
in the past year focussed on email
campaigns, social media and some
good old-fashioned print publicity. We
also keep up-to-date with blog posts
and events on gdc.net/mb.
The greatest efforts and the most
response came from The Draplin
Design Company Road Show, which
the chapter presented Nov. 6, 2015.
To give you an idea of the popularity
of the communication surrounding
Aaron Draplin’s visit to Winnipeg,
a typical Facebook post by GDC
Manitoba has a reach of 100 or maybe
500, depending on the message and
how well folks share it. With Draplin
news, the each was in the thousands
(2.2 K for the announcement of the
Draplin Does Winnipeg video).
PechaKucha, another very public way
our chapter engages with members
and non-members, also receives a lot
of attention in the various spheres
of social media. Other events, such
as Beers with Peers and the March
2016 HTML & CSS workshop are
promoted and receive various levels of
attendance.

Goals for 2016–207
It would be good to continue the
email campaigns and social media
messages but engage even more
members and non-members.
Involving more GDC Manitoba
members, whether they are board
members or not, may help accomplish
this goal.
I will be happy to continue to
volunteer as Communications Chair.
