ABSTRACT

Ayurveda is the everlasting supreme science of medicine because it

deals with all aspects of life, particularly of human being since time

immemorial. To maintain the proper and better health mahabhringaraj

tail shiroabhyanga. Ayurveda has considered four (Purushartha)

principles i.e. dharma, artha, kama & moksha one should always

follow towards the things which are mentioned in ayurveda.

Today‟s modern and ever-changing lifestyle poses some basic

problems, i.e.

Disturbed food habit

Disturbed sleep habit

Enormous/ heavy work load.

Lack of time

Shiroabhyanga is one of the upakramas described in dincharya for nidranash, alopecia and

graying of the scalp-hair, headache and even in all the disorders / diseases of urdhwajatrugat

vikar (supraclavicular region).

The national sleep foundation of america estimates that at least 1/3rd

people of world suffer

from sleep disorders. Additionally, sleeplessness has been associated with broad range of

complications, including depression, heart disease, lost productivity and an increased high

way and work related problems. Our acharyas has given importance vata in management of

nidranash, proper counseling, relaxation techniques along with other therapies are

considerable in the management.

Drug Review: Mahabhringraj tail hindi meaning of maha – great & Bhringraj – keshraj (ruler

of the hair) It promotes growth of head hair. bhringraj herb is a preventive to the aging

process which maintains and helps rejuvenate bones, teeth, hair, sight, hearing and memory.

It is the best ayurvedic herbal medicine for the hair. bhringraj oil is famous for making the

hair black and luxuriant; for removing grayness and reversing balding. It helps calm the mind

from excessive activity and promotes sound sleep.

Pratyush et al. World Journal of Pharmaceutical Research

The ingredients of this recipe are bhringraj, manjistha, yasthimadhu, padmaka, sariva and tila

aail. The drugs are also having the other properties like keshya, vataghana, khalitya nasak,

palitya nasak and indriya prasadankara. But as these constituents were prepared by the tail

paka vidhi according to “sanskaro hi gunantaradhanam” their individual properties emerged

into each other and emerges some new properties. As such, the tail thus prepared had laghu

and snigdha properties with madura and keshya and tikta and katu rasa with madura vipaka

and ushna virya which was intended to have a tridosha-shamaka effect. Mahabhringraj tail is

kaeshya, vatashamaka, pittashamaka .So it is very effective in nidranasha and also its effect

on health. This tail is vataghna and considered as the drug of choice in vataj rogas

(vatavridhi) like nidranasha.

This vataghna property can be further enhanced, when this tail is processed by vatashamak

dravyas, pittashamak dravyas and fragrant dravyas like sariva, yasthimadhu, raktachandana,

bringaraja, priyangu etc. Therefore it is very effective in nidranasha, darunaka, khalitya etc.

Mahabhringraj tail possesses the properties like kaeshya, khalitya, palitya, vata-pittasamaka.

It alleviates shirogata pitta vitiated vayu, which affect on vata dosha. So mahabhringraj tail

shiroabhyanga nourishes the mastishya & vata get pacified. The madura, tikta rasa of

mahabhringraj tail which alleviates pitta dosha & vata dosha predominantly & nourishing the

masthishykya. It cures nidranash.

The laghu and snigdha properties would act on the vitiation of the kapha and vata dosha

whereas sheeta virya and madura vipaka would act on pitta dosha. ushna virya and snigdha

property would act on the vitiation of kapha and tikta rasa, sheeta virya and madura vipaka

would act on pitta dosha. The ushna virya and snigdhatva would aid in liquefying the dried

kapha in the pores of the scalp locally clearing up the obstruction offered to the growth of

new hairs.

The application of Tail on the scalp with finger tips, it leads to increase the local blood

circulation and promotes the absorption of the drug. keshya, rasayana and indriya prasadan

action of drugs enhance the nutritive beneficial effect on the hair and the sukshma, vyavayi;

vikasi and yogvahi guans have a quality to penetrate easily through the hair orifices and

control vayu, which controls mind. indriyas are in close contact of mind and all the indriya

adhisthana is shira. If indriya remain healthy mind automatically remains healthy. So the

patients had a significant relief in the symptoms of nidranash and associated symptoms.

Shiroabhyanga upakarma is described as one of the important procedure of dincharya. A

person who does shiroabhyanga daily is less affected with headache, hair falling, hair

graying, and his hair becomes strong rooted, black and long, all senses of that person become

healthy, his facial skin becomes soft, shiny and gets a good sleep. (Ch.Su.5/81-83). On virtue

of such good properties, shiroabhyanga has been included in the chapter of daily routine of a

person (dincharya).

Shiroabhyanga is a subtype of abhayanga.

Start pouring oil on the top of the head. This oil is then spread all over the head by using

fingers to the sides of the skull up to the temples. Try to go along the seemanta marma points

and massage the scalp. Rubbing this oil all over the head hairs are twisted at the clockwise.

Lastly press the head by two hands from forward to back and backward to forward.

Shiroabhyanga increases prana, the subtle aspect of vata dosha to the body. Shiroabhyanga is

also very effective in health of the persons like relaxations of body and mind, hair growth,

skin etc.

Shiro means mind, head and neck and abhayanga means massage. The head is one of the first

areas that the fetus develops in the womb and is the center of the nervous system. The top of

the baby‟s cranium has a soft area known as the brahmarandhra or the tenth gate. It sites

directly above the pineal gland and the olfactory lobe in the mid brain.

The human body has ten gates from which the prana can leave them are as follows

1. 2 Eyes

2. 2 Ears

3. 2 Nostrils

4. Mouth

5. Genitals

6. Anus

7. Brahmarandhra, at the adhipati marma point.

The brahmarandhra takes about nine months to close, during this time, gentle scalp massage

with oil may provide more prana with which the child can learn, think and memories and can

benefit the five senses. Shiroabhyanga improves.

Arterial flow, Venous flow, Lymphatic flow and Nourishes skin or Local Tissues, Improve

the health of Scalp, which may cease hair fall.

According to ayurveda mana is an ubhyatamaka indriya which links the brain to the rest of

ten indriyas (5 karmaendriyas + 5 gyanendriyas). When the mana comes under the effect of

shleshma and tamas guna. Its linking ability is either hampered or stopped transiently. This

tranisent natural stage is known as nidra.

Nidra or sleep is a condition in which the mind and sense organs become unable to perceive

any sort of sense object due to fatigue. It is purely a physiological entity and is very much

essential for normal healthy life. Nidra has been mentioned as tryaopastambha or sub-pillar of

life in the classics. Strength, complexion and nourishment of body depend on proper sleep.

Our acharyas have given different opinions regarding the types of sleep. Basically nidra can

be classified into 2 types viz.

1) Swabhavik (Normal)

2) Aswabhavik (Abnormal)

Swabhavik Nidra: This come regularly at every night, which is having beneficial effect for

living beings.

Aswbhavik Nidra: May be due to different cause.

Another seven types are described by charakacharya

1) Tamobhava Nidra.

2) Shleshma Samudbhava Nidra.

3) Manah Shrama Sambhav Nidra.

4) Sharir Shrama Sambhav Nidra.

5) Agantuki Nidra.

6) Vyadhyanuvartini Nidra.

7) Ratri Swabhav Prabhava Nidra.

Modern Review

Insomnia is the condition, which is featured by a predominant complaint of difficulty in

initiating or maintaining sleep or non-restrictive sleep.

Physiology of Sleep

There are 5 stages of sleep, associated with two alternating physiologic mechanisms have

been defined. Relaxed wakefulness is found to be accompanied by sinusoidal alpha waves of

8-12 per second and low voltages fast activity of mixed frequency in EEG.

There are usual associated blinks, eye and limb movements and moderate tone of the skeleton

muscles. As a person fall asleep, then the muscle relax, eyelids drops, the eyes begins to roll

from side to side, the EEG pattern changes to one of progressively lower voltage and mixed

frequency. This is called-

Stage-1: In stage-1 the muscles relaxes.

Stage-2: As sleep deepens to stage-2, bursts of 12-14 cycles per second waves and high

amplitude slow wave complex appear. At this stage, the movements of the eyes have been

ceased, but the muscle tone will maintained.

Stage-3 & 4: These stages featured by increasing proportion of high voltage, slow waves

activity in EEG.

Stage 5: in this stage, rapid eye movements return and muscle tension increase in jaw, where

as the neck, trunk and limb muscles.

After few time, Myoclonus movements becomes completely slack. This last stage of sleep is

called as the Active state of sleep.

During each night, a person goes through stages of two types of sleep that alternate with each

other. They are

1. Non rapid eye movement sleep (NREM)

2. Rapid eye movement sleep ( REM)

EEG (Electro encephalogram),

EOG (Electro occulogram),

EMG (Electro myogram) can be conveniently recorded during the Sleep by fixing small

silver electrode to the scalp and to the face before the subject goes to the sleep.

EOG reveals the eyeball movements while EMG indicates the tension of the muscles. Based

on these records two kind of sleep can be identified.

Summery

Present study was under taken to study the role of shiroabhyanga in the ever-increasing

number of patients of nidranash. Therefore was entitled as “To study the effect of

mahabhringraj tail shiroabhyanga on health W.S.R to nidranash.”

30 patients showing symptoms of nidranasha subjected to an evaluation of the nidranasha, by

nidranasha questionnaire was derived from mind, body & soul and internationally accepted

site. Such meticulously selected patients were subjected to shiroabhyanga treatment with

mahabhringraj tail which was standardized. In case where the patient could not answer the

questions in english, vernacular version was used and every question was explained to a less

knowledgeable patients and the score was obtained and entered by the investigator.

Every patient was subjected for this treatment for consecutively 30 days. Both the ancient and

modern literature on manas and mind respectively were scanned and reviewed. manas having

three properties, out of which satwa being a guna and rajas and tamas being it‟s doshas,

which when vitiated vitiate manas and buddhi in tern leading to pradnyaparadha, the root

cause of all the diseases. As the direct references to the subject under study are scanty, the

bhavas of manas and their effects on manas were studied.

The review of ancient literature on samprapti (patho-physiology) of the manas vikaras eg.

unmada, apasmara, vyoshapasmara, atatwa-abhinivesh was under taken and on the basis of

their samprapties; established by various acharyas an attempt is made to suggest the

samprapti of nidranasha as a direct references are not available.

Various managements are available in ancient and modern medicine. Though both the

sciences believe in the psychological counseling and satwavajay chikitsa (which seems to be

a nearest synonym for each other), the medications vastly differ.

The modern science prescribes anti-depressant and anxieolytic internal medications which are

largely habit forming and the drug dependence develops as they are to be used for longer

period of time.

Whereas the view of the ayurvedic practioners is altogether different and they are using

medications, which boost the manas by prescribing mood elevators. These medication boost

the manas, corrects its perception and thought process there by calms the manas and/or

control the unstable; the chanchal manas.

www.wjpr.net Vol 6, Issue 3, 2017. 696

Pratyush et al. World Journal of Pharmaceutical Research

Many single composite and herbomineral (rasoushadhhis) internal medications are mentioned

and are in practice, which act on manovah srotas. Amongst the external modalities, moordh

taila comprising of shiroabhynaga, shirodhara, shiropichhu and shirobasti are advocated by

the acharyas to achieve effect on manovah srotas and uttamanga.

Shiroabhyanga; a procedure, which can be practices on an outdoor basis and in simple setups

like practiceners clinic was thought to be a good choice for the study as the modality though

in practice, the scientific data is scanty. The procedure and the material used for it were in the

form of oils and other liquid medications. As constrains of the modern day life is causing

undue stress on the people of this era, the number of patients with nidranasha of different

degrees are on the rise. Hence shiroabhyanga an easily practicable modality was studied to

over due this medical problem.

The result of the study shows that the clinical response to the various symptoms is

satisfactory to the patients and to the physician both. Symptoms like nidranash (Insomnia),

shirashoola were reduced or mitigated.

The most important topic of any research is the conclusions that can be drawn from the study.

Conclusions were derived through a careful study of classical as well as contemporary

literature.

Vatapradhana, pittapradhana prakrti people, vatavridhi and stressed person were found to

be prone to nidranash easily. In the literary study of samhithas atiyoga, heenayoga and

mithyayoga of asatmendriya samyoga, pradnyaparadha, parinama, dharana of

adharaneeya vegas and adharana of dharaneeya vegas were found to be the main

etiological causes of nidranash.

Nidranash pathology affects all the systems of the body was found to be a main etiology

of most of the diseases in the body. shiroabhyanga was found to be the best remedial

measure for nidranash. Nidranash can be understood as pathology in manovaha Srotas

due to the aggravation of Manasic doshas like raja and tama.

Vata dosha also plays a key role in development of various symptoms of nidranash and

stress like shirogaurava, angamarda, apakti etc.

www.wjpr.net Vol 6, Issue 3, 2017. 697

Pratyush et al. World Journal of Pharmaceutical Research

Due to the changes in the life style, many newer diseases are being introduced in the

society. Today, with the rapid diversification of human activity, we come face to face

with numerous cause of mental stress those affects prakrut nidra (natural sleep).

Vata dosha also plays a key role in development of nidranash. Shiroabhyanga is one of

the procedures coming under dinacharya. Every person should follow dinacharya to

maintain their health.

Indriyas are in close contact of mind and all the indriyas adhisthana is shira. If indriyas

remain healthy mind automatically remains healthy.

In mahabhringraj tail there are so many contents like bhringraj, haridra, yasthimadhu,

chandan etc. and these drugs have their own properties like bhringraj is effective in kesya,

indriya prasadanker. khalitya, palitya. So these drugs enhance the properties of tail. But as

these constituents were prepared by the taila paka vidhi according to sanskaro hi

gunantaradhanam their individual properties emerged into each other and emerges some

new properties.

Madhur, tikta rasa of mahabhringraj which alleviates pitta dosha & vata dosha

predominantly & nourishing the masthishykya. So it cures nidranash.

Hence mahabhringraj tail is sukshma, vyavayi, vikasi and yogvahi. So it has a quality to

penetrate easily through the hair orifices and control vayu, which controls mind.

Mahabhringraj tail shiroabhyanga is an effective upkarma in nidranash and also

maintaining the health of the individuals.

OBSERVATION AND RESULTS

Thirty patients enrolled for the study were of Age group 30 – 60 yrs. Majority of patients was

from the age group of 30 to 40 yrs. Out of 30 patients taken for the studies maximum

numbers of patients were having business as a profession i.e. 43.33%. In the present study

Majority of the patients were male (93.33 %) and less females were reported (06.66 %). Pitta

pradhana prakruti (40%) and Vata pradhana prakruti (23.33%).
