Now, youcan model your true business requirements and then transform that data modelinto a perfectly matching technical implementation, without losing any of thebusiness context in the process.

On- Screen Ed i t ing

A very exciting new feature in Toad Data Modeler 3 is on-screen object editing.Below, you can see that the Customer ID column can be easily selected fromwithin the physical model and simply changed on the screen. This is a real timesaver. Plus, you can copy, cut and paste items such as attributes and columnsacross objects as well as models. You can use the standard Microsoft Windowsdrag-and-drop shortcuts like you do in Windows Explorer. This is a hugeproductivity enhancing feature, particularly for large models where objects mayneed to share common items.

With Toad Data Modeler 3, you can switch display styles between the very commonInformation Engineering (IE) and IDEF1X, a popular U.S. government standard.This is possible through the new and flexible architecture within the product. Youcan also add other notations as time goes oneven the Oracle CASE tools Barkernotation. Below is an example of IDEF1X display mode. You simply need to openthe main menus Notation item and select what you prefer.

Have you ever had the desire to modify the design of the application screen fromwhich you work? Do you wish you could add your own dialog box or data entryfield? With Toad Data Modeler 3 you canand its really easy. Save a favoritescreen design by simply right-clicking on the screen and choosing edit.

Take a look at the default entity screen below. Lets say you dont like the emptyspace in the layout and you want to add some of your own information for data

entry. Voil, the results are shown below. And it only takes about five minutes tomake Toad Data Modeler 3 look and feel how you want it to.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Bert Scalzo is a product architect for Quest Software and a member of the Toad

team. He has worked extensively with Toads developers and designed many of

Toads features, including the DBA module, Code Road Map and Code Xpert. Mr.Scalzo has more than two decades of experience with Oracle databases, starting

with version 4, and served at both the Oracle Education and Oracle Consultingorganizations. He holds several Oracle Masters certifications as well as bachelors,

masters and Ph.D. degrees in computer science. Additionally, Mr. Scalzo holds anMBA and several insurance industry designations. He is also an accomplished

speaker and has presented at numerous Oracle conferences and user groups. He is

the author of four books: Oracle DBA Guide to Data Warehousing and Star Schemas,

Toad Handbook, Toad Pocket Reference (2nd Edition), and DatabaseBenchmarking: Practical Methods for Oracle 10g & SQL Server 2005. You can

John Pockn el l is a product manager at Quest Softwares European headquarters in

Maidenhead, UK. He has been with Quest since 2000, focusing on database design,development and testing product areas. John also spends significant time withcustomers at Toad and Oracle user group meetings throughout Europe and the

Asia-Pacific region, promoting Toad and presenting Toad training courses. John has

worked in IT for more than 20 years, primarily in Oracle-based application designand development. He is also an aeronautical engineer, with more than 10 years of

experience as a business development manager delivering IT consultancy servicesand implementing quality assurance systems to the ISO 9001 standard.
