Tons of talent at Toad Suck

Log CAbin DemoCrAT

Diamond Rio, Kip Moore and Hawk Nelson will be the headlining acts next week when the Toad Suck Daze Festival kicks off.

When last year’s festi-val was occurring, Moore had just released his first album, “Up All Night.” A year later, Moore has released four singles, “Mary Was the Marrying Kind,” “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck,” “Beer Money” and “Hey Pretty Girl.”

Diamond Rio has been a successful country and Christian music band since 1984. In 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1997, they re-ceived the Country Music Association’s award for

Vocal Group of the Year. They have recorded sev-en studio albums dur-ing that time, amassing a huge following.

Hawk Nelson is a very popular Canadian Chris-tian punk band that has been around for about a decade. Their 2006 album “Smile, It’s the End of the World” earned them mul-tiple awards from Cana-dian and American acad-emies.

In addition to the headliners, Toad Suck Daze will host two shows from Erin Enderlin, a re-turn visit from Drake White and regional acts such as Interstate Buffa-lo, Canvas, Beautiful Di-saster, Kingsdown and more.

Organizers say more than 200 toads are needed for the Toad Suck Daze toad races.

In an effort to gath-er a “knot,” or a collec-tion of toads, festival chair Mary Margaret Satterfield has asked festival fans to meet at Tucker Creek walk-ing trail off of Salem

Road Tuesday for toad hunting.

Some years have proved a challenge, and toads don’t like the cold.

Every year, volun-teers pull through by supplying the festival from their own stores of toads.

Suggested supplies for toad hunting in-clude rubber boots, gloves for the faint-at-

heart, and a flashlight or head lamp.

Boxes for toad stor-age, or Toad Condos, are provided by the Conway Area Cham-ber of Commerce.

Toad hunting begins at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Other toad gather-ers may drop toads off at the Chamber’s of-fice during business hours until Toad Suck Daze.

On your mark, get set, toad!

From years of expe-rience, from youngsters to celebrities, there is no toadally surefire way to handle a racing toad.

Some say it’s similar to relating to a girlfriend: Whisper in its ear and it will do anything. The trick is finding the toad’s ear.

Then, there’s the diva method: Applause.

A toad, like humans, will reach back for a little extra with applause.

Another method is re-ferred as the wife nurtur-ing approach: Blow on its back and the toad will be at your command — at least for awhile.

And there’s the ‘Mom’ in her ‘clean your room’ approach:

Yell at it. Steady and stern.

There’s the heavy-handed strategy: Slap

just behind the toad.(Just make sure the

toad doesn’t make a sud-den backward move).

The fairy tale princess approach: Kiss it.

One beauty queen once said that it may not assure victory, but there was possible a chance it could turn into a hand-some prince.

About 300 toads will be used for weekend rac-es, from youngsters to ce-lebrities.

Probably, motivation techniques are as differ-ent and varied as they are for any athlete.

There’s always a sur-prise with a toad goes on its own tangent — or “toadgent.”

When then-Gov. Bill Clinton participated in the race in 1988, his toad jump off — way out of its lane.

Clinton analyzed: “Just like the Legislature. It took a turn to the right.”

This year’s Conway Corporation’s Toadal Game Zone will give vis-itors the chance to show off their dancing and singing talent with a stage for Dance Central 3 and karaoke.

The special area will also have free video games all day during the festival. The stage will be designated for kara-oke or dancing at differ-ent times throughout the weekend.

Conway Corpora-

tion Marketing Manag-er Crystal Kemp said the addition of karaoke and dancing last year was a hit, so the Game Zone sponsor decided to bring it back for an encore this year.

“We are excited about being at Toad Suck Daze again this year,” Kemp said. “Adding the Kara-oke and dance stage in 2012 was a big hit and we are glad to be bring-ing it back in 2013.”

The game zone will be located near the Toad Dome at the corner of Main Street and Park-

way Street in the Toad Market area.

The Toadal Game Zone is toadally free of charge. It will be open through-out the Toad Suck Daze festival with special times for dance and kara-oke performances.

At some point, many youngsters dream of growing up to be a fire-fighter.

During Toad Suck Daze, several will get the chance to be one for a couple of days, crawling, dragging and squirting in competition with their contemporaries.

During the Crawl,

Drag and Squirt com-petiton, youngsters go through a timed obsta-cle course that requires many of the skills that firefighters use. They including putting on a coat and pack, crawl-ing through a confined space, pulling a sled, smashing objects with a rubber mallett and drag-ging a hose a short dis-tance, then squirting it

at a target.The competition is

age-graded (grades 1-2 and 3-4) with separate di-visions for boys and girls. In the process of the com-petition, they also learn about fire safety.

Youngsters qualify through their elementa-ry schools.

Another preliminary competition will begain at 5:30 p.m. Friday at

the Central Fire Station. The finals will begin

at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at a roped-off area on Front Street.

Each finalist receives a medal and trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each division. A traveling tro-phy goes to the elemen-tary school that accumu-lates the most points in the finals.

By MEGAN REYNOLDSLOG CABIN STAFF WRITER

Stuck on a Truck, a crowd-pleasing competi-tion and the ultimate test in physical and mental endurance, is entering its twelfth year at 2013 Toad Suck Daze.

The event will begin next week under the cov-er of a tent near Toad Suck Square, one day be-fore the streets shut down

and Toad Suck Daze fes-tival opens to crowds.

Centennial Bank, lead sponsors, cultivated the event in 2001, known then as “Hug a Bug,” with a grand prize of a red Volkswagen Beetle. Six-ty-five hours and 14 min-utes from the start of the competition, Phillip Toll of Conway won the keys to the brand new bug.

This year, gathered around a shiny, new 2013

Ford F150, 25 competi-tors will stand for days with at least one hand on the truck in hopes of tak-ing it home, sustained by adrenaline, their desire to win and the cheers of support of friends and family.

Contestants must stand upright at all times and are disquali-fied for sitting, leaning

Unique items from close to 150 vendors will be available for festival-goers with the annual Toad Market at Toad Suck Daze.

A wide variety of prod-ucts to tickle anyone’s fancy will be for sale, ranging from jewelry, chil-dren’s clothing, home de-cor, sand art, wooden toys, cell phone accessories and more.

The market will contain both commercial products and hand-made arts and crafts, some of which may be personalized.

Mary Margaret Satter-field, director of events for the Conway Area Cham-ber of Commerce, said that this year’s Toad Mar-ket will feature new ven-dors as well as returners.

“We normally have a

lot of vendors that have returned every year,” she said.

Also included in the Toad Market is a Business Expo. The expo will give a chance for businesses and nonprofits to show what they have to offer to the community.

“It’s an information area so we have business-es and nonprofits,” Satter-field said. “People can find out about their services.”

Business Expo vendors include Relay for Life of

Faulkner County, Arkan-sas Army National Guard and The Pampered Chef.

The Toad Market will be open throughout the three-day festival. For a complete list of vendors visit www.toadsuck.org/toad-market/.

SPECIAL TO THE LOG CABIN

Toad Suck Daze doesn’t just fund fun — it also funds local education ini-tiatives.

Beginning with the Toad Suck Daze Commu-nity Service Scholarship, the Toad Suck Daze festi-val has provided funding for education initiatives in Faulkner County since 1984. About $1.3 million has been donated to edu-cation initiatives to date. Last year, for the first time, $50,000 from Toad Suck also went to Lifelong Learners, a nonprofit ded-icated to improving edu-cational outcomes and im-proving school readiness for pre-school age chil-dren.

In 2013, Toad Suck Daze will divide $95,500

in donations to the follow-ing education initiatives:

· $35,000 to Life Long Learners

· 18 scholarships in the amount of $3,000 each to students planning to at-tend Central Baptist Col-lege, Hendrix College or the University of Central Arkansas.

· 4 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to students attending the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton.

· $2,500 to the Toad Suck Daze endowment

The Community Ser-vice Scholarship was designed to foster an opportunity for civic re-sponsibility, education, outreach and community growth among Faulkner County youth. This schol-arship fund has provid-ed more than $730,000 to about 220 students who attended Central Baptist College, Hendrix College, University of Central Ar-

kansas and the Univer-sity of Central Arkansas Community College at Morrilton.

In 2008, the Toad Suck Daze Get Smart Challenge was endowed through the Community Foundation of Faulkner County.

This $300,000 dona-tion was the largest one-time donation in the fes-tival’s history. Combined with Toad Suck Daze en-dowments already estab-lished at Central Baptist College, Hendrix College, and the University of Central Arkansas, Toad Suck Daze has more than $600,000 in endowment that provide funds for the scholarship program.

Scholarship brochures and applications are also available at all Faulkner County high schools, UCA, CBC, Hendrix Col-lege, and UACCM. Please contact the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce at 327-7788 for more infor-mation.
