The Cost of ActionWhat does it cost you to stand up for the things you believe in? Howdoes it affect your relationships? What have you gained and given upas a result of swimming against the tide? In 2012, hundreds of you toldus you would value more stories about this, to help you stay the coursewhen working for change becomes hard-going. So in 2013 we’vecurated a number of films that speak about the cost of action… andspaces to reflect on what might start and sustain you as you step intobeing the change you want to see. Look out for films with the “cost ofaction” symbol throughout the programme. We are now also takingbookings for our first ever social change retreat. Focused onwellbeing in action: How To Change The World and Stay Human takesplace in Perthshire in March 2014. See back cover for details.

Take One Action DialoguesMany of you have been asking us to create space for smalleraudience conversations over a cuppa or a glass of wine after ourfestival screenings. In response, we’re launching Take One ActionDialogues: 60-minute facilitated conversations for up to 8 peopleat/near screening venues - a chance to explore the issues raised bythe films in a more personal way immediately after panel discussions. It’s free, and the first drink is on us. No catch, except that you mustregister to take part (and please show up if you do - it costs us). Lookout for the symbol throughout the guide for events where Dialoguesare taking place. To register, email [email protected] the film and date you want to join a dialogue for.

More ways to engageSisters Weekend (4 – 6 Oct, Edinburgh)2013 sees us launch a new strand into the festival: Sisters – casting apositive and critical lens on the vital role played by women in globaldevelopment, activism and environmental sustainability, as well asinjustices resulting from unjust gender norms. The strand launchesover the weekend 4 - 6 October in Edinburgh, with acclaimed UKfilmmaker Kim Longinotto’s tribute to Tamil poet Salma (“Exceptional”The Huffington Post, see page 26) followed by Sisters-inspired musicand poetry with Neu! Reekie! A Bangladeshi family battle the surging front line of climatechange in this critically acclaimed, mesmerising and paired-back testament to the hidden cost of high-carbon living.

Rakhi's son Rahul was only four in 2009 when a powerful tidal wave destroyed everything they owned. Her husband Soumen has had no work since, as every day remains a battle to defend the community’s land from typhoons and further flooding. Shot from immersive low camera angles which pull the viewer head first into scenes suggestive of science fiction, we join Rakhi and her family in impasse, struggling to keep their home out of the mud, while governments, both national and international, sit on their hands. Will there be a future for Rahul on his ancestral land? Or will he - like millions of others - be forced to make a life in theimpoverished slums churning out poverty-wage garments to keep the West happy?

Grand Jury and Audience Award winner at Sundance 2013,this intimate portrait of a young man who longs to find afamily and ends up in an HIV orphanage is challenging andgraceful in equal measure.

When Pittsburgh youth Rocky Braat first traveled to India, he washoping to clear his mind, sort out his priorities and forget about hispast. But when he is compelled to visit, and then befriend and workwith just a tiny fraction of the 220,000 children living with HIV, “Rockyanna” (brother, as they come to call him) soon realizes that the price of his compassion is to come to terms with the depths of his ownvulnerabilities. With voiceover from Selena Gomez, Alicia Keys, Meryl Streep andLiam Neeson, this spirited, colourful and moving film pairsnine (extra)ordinary girls from all corners of the globe withacclaimed writers and actors to tell how they faced down andovercame all-too-common barriers to education for girls.

In 2012 Malala Yousafzai was shot by the Taliban for trying to go toschool. Just like Malala, 66 million girls worldwide are currently beingdenied a basic education, mostly as a result of poverty and gendernorms. But “change is like a song you can’t hold back” says Sumafrom Nepal, who escaped bonded labour to learn how to read, and towrite music. Like Azmera from Ethiopia, whose brother is her biggestchampion, and Senna from Peru, who is learning to demand basicrights for her community, Suma represents the awesome differencethat educating all girls would make in the world. Screening on WorldTeacher’s Day, Girl Rising celebrates that change, and points to anurgent need to take it further.

In the late nineties, medicines were created to curb the impact of HIV,charged at £10,000 per person per year. As a result, AIDS associateddeaths dropped by 84 percent in developed countries. But to maintainprofits and apparently fund research, the drugs companies refused tolicence more affordable versions, leaving millions to die in countriesthat could not afford such high prices. “Sometimes I'd say we know more about making a good habitat formountain gorillas than we do about making one for man.” So beginsthe challenge implicit in the work of Danish architect Jan Gehl: directorAndreas Dalsgaard’s chosen icon launching a series of vignettes andvital questions about how city planning defines us, from China toEurope, for good or ill. This award-winning, immersive visual symphony to thehoney bee and the quirky people who nurture them is ahumble battle cry against a global food system that rests onunsustainable methods of pollination.

Albert Einstein famously said that “If the bee disappears, mankind willhave four years left to live”. Today, in regions right across the world,50% to 90% of local bee colonies have collapsed in an epidemic thatcontinues to spread beehive to beehive. While the cause is stilldebated, it’s clear that the increasingly industrialised nature ofbeekeeping for pollination is causing the disease to spread faster thanit can be contained. With deftness of touch, and dripping in honeyedcinematography, Markus Imhoof has made the holy grail of bee films. But what can Scotland do to change the outcome?

Somewhere in the Middle East, a young woman tends to hercomatose husband in their bomb-shelled bedroom. Fightingrages outside while she clings desperately to the hope –embodied by the film’s vivid, transformative hues – that hewill wake up and recover consciousness.

So runs the deceptively simple, but richly metaphorical premise ofdirector Atiq Rahimi’s Oscar-tipped adaptation of his bestselling novelThe Patience Stone. But patience is not what it seems. Gradually, wesee the wife – in an absolutely spectacular performance by Iranianactress Golshifteh Farahani – turn the tables on the patriarchal societyshe has been born into and confound the conflict deep-rooted in themen around her. Steve (Matt Damon) is a farm boy turned corporate salesman, dispatched to the backwater town of McKinley with his colleague Sue(delightfully played by Frances McDormand). The town has been hit hard by the economic decline of recent years, and the pair are confident of securing drilling rights on community properties. As more Scottish companies and institutions join theinternational boycott of settlement produce, this wide-rangingview of the internal and global forces working for and againstPalestine’s bid for statehood throws current peace talks aboutthe future of the region into powerful relief.

In 2011, Palestine submitted an application to the UN to gainrecognition as its 194th member state. State 194 follows Prime MinisterFayyad, hailed as both US stooge and independent hero, as hestruggles to support the bid with an ambitious infrastructure plan toprove that self-administration is viable. But Fayyad is just one actoramong many – from Israeli peace activists and “pragmatists”, toPalestinian bloggers and foreign diplomats – whose actions and hopesmust align to achieve a breakthrough. This is eye opening, oftenoptimistic, and ultimately necessary viewing.

As violence against women in India hits global headlines in2013, festival favourite Kim Longinotto tells the extraordinarystory of a Tamil woman locked up for more than 25 years, whose defiant poetry escapes to represent the hopes of millions.

When Salma, a young Muslim girl in a south Indian village, was 13years old, her family forbade her to study and eventually forced herinto marriage. Gradually, she began covertly composing poems onscraps of paper and, through intricate design, was able to sneak theminto the hands of a publisher. Against the odds, her poetry took Tamilsociety by storm: the first step to Salma discovering her freedom andchallenging the traditions and code of conduct in her own village.

Globally acclaimed master of aerial cinema, Yann ArthusBertrand, revisits our incredible and fragile planet – this timeforegrounding the wonders of the world’s fresh water sourcesand the ordinary heroes fighting to defend them.

A European family of four consumes 140,000 litres of water everyweek. But isn’t ours. It comes from other, often developing countries, that produce our coffee, jeans and cheap meat. There, water is oftenscarce and, in the face of climate change, increasingly a cause ofconflict. At the same time, those water sources are among the mostexquisite natural wonders of the world – from the Congo basin to theCambodian deltas. Viewed from surreal heights, and plunging to earthto meet the campaigners, entrepreneurs and women on the frontline,A Thirsty World is a beautiful, urgent call to everyday action.

By steering clear of the policing issues that have framed other docschronicling the Occupy era, and instead locking its sights on a politicallobbying system which defies centuries of social reform, We AreWisconsin is perhaps the most shocking and inspirational record ofthis moment in our social history. Inspirational, in that it also spotlightsanother trend: the rising tide of intelligent and feisty citizen action, which crosses social barriers and is changing the game.

One of the most talked-about films at Berlin Film Festival, thisquasi-satirical and strangely moving documentary reads likeLars Von Trier in real life, embedding in the chaotic evolutionof anarchist art movement Voina as their “interventions” lighta fire to spread across Russia.

Vor (Thief) and Koza (Goat) lead an underground existence asthey balance raising their one-year-old son Kasper with going outat night to steal, topple cars and graffiti public monuments in whatgradually emerges as the beginnings of a coherent and consideredresistance to the political and social repression they see pervadingPutin’s Russia. They live for the day, hoping to change the world oftomorrow. As the stakes quickly escalate, questions about “what isart”, “what is activism”, and “what is civilized” can only beanswered at deep personal cost.

Ten young Russian directors turn their cameras to the streetsto capture the explosive political climate in the monthsleading up to Vladimir Putin’s third re-election, in a film aboutcivil liberties featuring recently imprisoned opposition leaderAleksei Navalny, whose lessons should reverberate acrossthe world.

The result is a witty and thought-provoking tapestry enriched with amenagerie of characters – from artists, politicians and middle-agedmen drinking vodka at work, to overexcited journalists, nuns andyoung demonstrators – organising protests, joining rallies and voting.Arguments break out in shopping streets, and irony bristles into open humour when crowds start singing, "No Putin, no cry." A haunting reality pervades, though, sharpened by the audience’sknowledge that in the wake of these scenes, which include the|famous Pussy Riot protest, Putin’s beleaguered government willunleash an unprecedented crackdown against civic activism andpolitical opposition.

Taking the Message FurtherAs well as our annual festival, we support community groups, schools, universities and venuesacross Scotland to organise Take One Action-style film events. We concentrate on three programmes:

Take One ActionYear-Round

National Tour / Fair Trade FortnightEach February (20 Feb to 2 March 2014), overlapping with Fair TradeFortnight, we travel and support people across the country to organiseone or more global, social or environmental change themed filmscreenings for adult or youth audiences. Typically, we license “the best ofthe fest” (and more recent films) to a cluster (2-3 organisers or groups) in agiven community who share an aspiration to inspire more active andcreative global citizenship where they live. Then we help plug inspeakers, marketing and planning support to make it happen. Know acommunity that could host a screening in February? Get in touch.

Take One Action Film NetworkIn 2014 we will be launching the Take One Action Film Network. TheNetwork will support people across Scotland to organise their ownmonthly or bi-monthly screenings of critically acclaimed new films aboutissues of global, social and environmental change and concern, and tocreate spaces groups to discuss and act on the stories on film. Take OneAction “Clubs” will be able to curate their own organizer space on our brandnew website to help market events and link your audiences into filmcontent and social change opportunities relevant to your area and group’sinterests (see page 38). Clubs in the network will get support to programmefantastic film content, to market and plan events, and to empower and skill-up audiences. If you are interested in piloting a film club for yourcommunity, or know people who might be, drop us a line.

Young Action HeroesAre you a parent, youth group leader or teacher, or aged 13-25?
