The Rotatruck Ag version can beused on-farm for hauling haybales, feed or seed bags, buckets, drums and other items.

The wheels can turn 360 degrees, which means a trolley can bepushed sideways for example withless effort than trying to turn aconventional hand trolley.

The trolleys are made at thecompany’s Newcastle plant, although frames are imported fromthe USA.

The current Rotatruck is amodular aluminium design whichallows the company to customise itfor specific uses, on or off farm.

OWNER and manager of AndersonCedar Furniture, Denis Anderson, gotinto making handmade furniture as areaction to his first job as a cabinetmaker where he helped churn out a massproduced product.

He started that job as a 15-year-oldapprentice but later worked for Newcastlecabinet maker Fred Barry, who madetraditional furniture, includinggrandfather clocks.

He now makes custom-built furnitureat a small workshop at Black Hill in thelower Hunter.

Much of the furniture is made withAustralian red cedar, long regarded as oneof the most beautiful cabinet timbers.

Although cedar trees are now relativelyrare in the wild, Mr Anderson says he hasno problem obtaining red cedar, partlybecause many cedar stuctures still existon farms.

“A lot of farmers come up to me atTocal and offer me timber,” he said.

Although he makes the grandfatherclocks on spec – unlike the rest of hisproducts which he makes on order – he isparticular about to whom he sells them.

“I won’t sell a clock to someone unlessthey have actually seen it,” he said.

At Tocal Field Days, Mr Anderson willdisplay a range of furniture as well asgrandfather clocks on site S1.■ Contact (02) 4966 0074.

Practical Aussie stockyardsNATIONAL Stockyard Systemsoperates by a simple formula –if it can’t make a better productthan currently on the market, then it won’t make or market it.

And it sources all its steel fromAustralian mills and, wherepossible, its products are 100 percent made in Australia, said thecompany’s owner MurraySchaefer.

Farmers will have a chance tocheck this out for themselves atthis year’s Tocal Field Dayswhere the company will displayan extensive selection from itsrange of stock handlingequipment on sites 233-235, 246and 247.

National Stockyard Systemshas been operating for eightyears from nearby Rutherfordand is taking a complete rangeof crushes, cattle and horse

yards and loading ramps toTocal.

Mr Schaefer said the companywould also have a sample of thecompany’s sheep yards ondisplay, which used manyNational Stockyards’ patentedfeatures found in its cattle yards.

Hybrid stockyard panels with aheavier top rail would also be onshow – a product that recognisesthat in cattle yards it is usuallythe top rail which gets bent, hesaid.

“We have intellectual propertyrights over much of our stockhandling equipment and arealways attempting to improvethe practicality of our products”,Mr Schaefer said.

“We’ve patents on our gatesand joining systems, head bail, loading ramps, drafting units, calf cradle, split sliding gates

and registered designs on ourcrush operating handles, drafting gates, cattle yard gates, bolt together joining system andthe new folding chin clam.”

Visitors to Tocal will also beable to see the company’s manualdrafting unit that is as quick tooperate as an air operated one.■ Contact (02) 4932 1363.

In BriefOptions at Calrossy:CALROSSY Anglican School hasbeen providing a home away fromhome for girls for 94 years, anddue to overwhelming demandintroduced boarding for secondaryboys in 2010.

School principal ElisabethJackson said the introduction ofmale students was an excitingand iconic time in the history ofCalrossy Anglican School.

“The introduction of boysboarding completes the picturefor the school as we can nowoffer families the completepackage for all their children,”she said.

“Many families currently have to

split their girls and boys betweenschools and often between towns.

“We can now meet all theirneeds at the one school and theycan take advantage of ourgenerous sibling discount scheme.

“The boarding facilities are,of course, quite separate with thegirls being located on or very nearthe Brisbane Street campus, whilethe boys are in Tribe Street, not farat all from the Calrossy SecondaryBoys Campus on the Moore CreekRoad,” Mrs Jackson said.

A RANGE of electric vehiclessuitable for on-farm use will befeatured in the display at Tocalby Newcastle University’s TomFarrell Institute for theEnvironment.

These will include electricquad bikes, electric mowers andeven electric trail bikes.

The institute’s broad brushrole is to generate sustainablesolutions for future living andits work covers a wide range ofenvironmental areas, includingbiodiversity and treatment ofwaste water.

Its director Dr Tim Robertssaid electric vehicles, althoughtheir batteries needed to be

recharged from electricity mainspresumably serviced by coal-fired electricity stations, generally resulted in lower netcarbon dioxide and othergreenhouse gas emissions thanvehicles powered by fossil fuels.

And as petrol prices began torise as world oil reservesdwindled, electric vehicles wouldbecome increasingly economic.

In the future there would bemore “green” electrons coursingdown powerlines generated byclean sources of energy such assolar and wind, he said.

“That means relatively lessdamage to the environmentfrom carbon dioxide.”

Quad safety: The Quadbar isa roll bar or rollover protectivestructure designed for use with anall terrain vehicle or quad bike.

Designed by Darling Downsfarmer David Robertson theQuadbar acts as a crushprotection device (CPD) asopposed to the more commonlyknown roll over protectivestructures (ROPS).

“A typical ROPS would require afull cage and driver restraint, which are not feasible on a rideractive vehicle such as a quadbike,” he said.

The Quadbar, made ofaluminium tube, is mounted onthe tow bar and is telescopicallyadjustable at the base.

Mr Robertson said a supportmount was attached to the rearrack, where the bar passesthrough sliding collars (bushes),which subsequently allow thesuspension to move freely.

THE aerated waste watertreatment system (AWTS)developed by EarthsafeEnvironmental has become thesystem of choice for some ofAustralia’s largest home builders.

The system can treat wastewater from a residential buildingoccupied by up to 10 people, orwith a daily flow of 1500 litres.

AWTS offers a simple processthat reduces bacteria andpollutants to a clear and odourlesswastewater that can be used toirrigate lawns and gardens, subjectto council approval, said acompany spokesman.

Earthsafe, part of the Rivatec

Group, will display its equipmentand offer advice at the Tocal FieldDays at sites 299 and 300.

The company’s ability tomanufacture, transport and installits own systems as well as its aftersales service gives it an edge overcompetitors, said the spokesman.

“The company has fully trainedinstaller agents who provide a 24hour back up service.”

Waste safefor the earth

PUTTING worms to workprovides the basis for thecomprehensive household wastemanagement system offered byA and A Worm Farm WasteSystems.

The company can arrange theinstallation of a system toprocess all sewage, waste waterand organic garbage.

“The whole household, including fittings such asflushing toilets can be connectedto the systems,” said companyrepresentative Dianne Hall.

The waste water feeds into anunderground 3200 litre tankseeded with worms, and acompost bin for organic garbagesits on the top of the tank.

“The worms do their job asnature designed and process allorganic matter by converting it

to odour-free worm castings,”she said.

Ms Hall said the worms ineffect managed their ownpopulation, and numbers roseand fell according to the amountof material being fed in.

The resulting product was thendistributed through a sub-surface disposal area, which canprovide a valuable liquidfertiliser for gardens.

“There is no health risk, nosmell and no service contracts,”she said.

At Tocal, A and A will displaysamples of equipment involved, and will offer advice andarrange quotes for interestedcustomers on site 119.■ Visitwww.wormfarm.com.au orcontact (02) 9653 3034
