A Prayer for Hong Kong
Lord God, we ask for your blessing on the people of the Hong Kong SAR: at this time of divided opinions strengthen those who work for mutual understanding; make our hearts open to hear and embrace those who hold different views from ourselves; and may our leaders work together to seek the common good. First Reading: Revelation 7.9-end After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, ‘Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!’ And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing, ‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Second Reading: 1 John 3.1-3 See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. This is the Word of the Lord. Gospel Reading: Matthew 5.1-12 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. Clergy This morning the Revd Catherine Graham is leading the worship at St Stephen’s Chapel, Stanley.
The Cathedral Choir is recruiting! The Choir sings at the Eucharist every Sunday, at Choral Mattins once a month and on special occasions such as Christmas and Easter, weddings and memorial services. It is an amateur mixed choir with about 40 members. It adheres mainly to the standard cathedral repertoire. You can find past and current music lists as well as service recordings on our web page in St John’s Cathedral’s website www.stjohnscatehdral.org.hk. If you have choral experience and reasonable sight singing skills, you are welcome to attend one of our weekly Friday practices (from 6.15pm to 7.45pm) and to take an audition (scales and sight-singing) afterwards. Michaelmas Fair Message from The Discoverers The Discoverers would like to thank the Michaelmas Fair Committee for giving us a stall at the Fair and helping us set up. We want to thank everyone who put in so much effort for our CUPCAKE STALL - you provided cupcakes, containers, sprinkles, icing, marshmellows, cooler boxes, etc. We know that slaving over hot ovens for hours making hundreds of cupcakes is no mean feat! Our stall was enjoyed by many kids and grown ups. Thanks to the Sunday School coordinators and teachers for leading the effort and to our wonderful Sunday School parents who contributed so many boxes of cupcakes of different flavours! In all we made over $6000! THANKS AGAIN - WE COULDN'T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU!!

'Coping with Pressures and Adversity'
Guest Speaker: Mr Stephen Lam
Venue : Li Hall Date : 4th November 2014 Time : 1.00pm – 2.00pm We are delighted to announce that Mr Stephen Lam, former Chief Secretary of Hong Kong, is going to speak to us again in the Christians in Central on 4th November, 2014, it will be the second time after many years but the first time after his retirement from the Government in 2012. The title of the talk will be 'Coping with Pressures and Adversity'. Mr Lam will be referring to some issues that he had dealt with in his time in Government, and how The Lord has guided him through. Stephen Lam was formerly Chief Secretary of the Hong Kong Government from September 2011 to June 2012. Previously he was Secretary for
Constitutional and Mainland Affairs. In this portfolio, for almost ten years,
he was responsible for elections, human rights and Hong Kong's relations with Mainland China and Taiwan. After retiring from the Hong Kong Government in June 2012, Mr Lam read theology at Wycliffe Hall, University of Oxford and the Oxford Centre for
Christian Apologetics. He graduated with the Certificate in Theological and
Pastoral Studies in June 2013. Currently, Mr Lam undertakes speaking engagements regularly among churches, schools and other institutions, both in Hong Kong and overseas. Honours Throughout his career Mr Lam has received many distinguished awards including the Gold Bauhinia Star and the Grand Bauhinia Medal by the Hong Kong SAR Government. $60 per attendee including a light lunch of sandwich and soup. Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph – 9th November at 11.00am The Revd John Chynchen will be officiating as the religious convenor at the traditional Remembrance Sunday Ceremony at the Cenotaph (adjacent to the former Legco Building in Chater Road, Central) from 10.55am. Prayers and recitations will be offered by Anglican, Buddhist, Confucian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Roman Catholic and Taoist clerics and leaders. This annual ceremony is hosted by the Royal British Legion (Hong Kong & China Branch) and the Hong Kong Ex-Servicemen's Association.

Pastoral care is an important part of our ministry here at St John’s Cathedral. Our clergy are here to offer spiritual, emotional and practical support on a day to day basis and in times of difficulty. This ministry includes caring for those who are sick, the dying, the bereaved and the lonely. The clergy can visit you at home, in hospital, or even somewhere for a coffee and a chat.
