Benefits of Virtus 25 June 2017, Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time www.stpatricka2.org L et’s face it—no one really wants to go through safe environment training. At some level it can feel useless and troubling to hear lots of sad stories of young people who have been abused and those who have hurt them. At times, situations like these can seem like a world away from our parish. From my experiences though, the knowledge one gains from a Protecting God’s Children training really does make a difference in helping parents, employees and volunteers make the parish a safer place. First, it gives practical guidelines of how to ensure that any event with young people remains a safe place for our children. Simple preventative measures go a long way to diminish the possibilities of abuse. Secondly, training helps one to prudently safeguard even the appearance of potential inappropriate behavior for yourself and those around you when interacting with youth. In addition, it gives examples of behavior patterns that should raise warning signs for volunteers and employ- ees. Just one person who notices and recognizes a problematic and abusive behavior pattern can save a young person from a lifetime of pain and hurt. Finally, the training helps people have the courage to relay the concerns they witness to those who can help when they see signs of possible child sexual abuse. Fr. Tom and I have organized safe environment trainings to be offered at our parish next month. We have two dates scheduled: Monday July 17 at 6PM and Saturday July 22 at 5PM. Each day will offer the complete “Protecting God’s Children” Virtus training. These trainings are offered for free by the diocese because of the importance of making sure all our parish volunteers have the tools needed to help keep our children safe. I hope that volunteers, tutors, catechists, parents, and those who help with parish event will come. It is important to realize that we must be vigilant to keep our parish safe. As a parish we want to take the time and effort to be effective at preventative measures to keep harm away from our young people. Thanks for your care for our youth. Your concern and cooperation go a long way to make our parish a place where all young people can be safe and grow in the love of the Lord. Collaboration and Parish Council

D ear Parishioners, Two weeks ago I wrote about the need to form a Parish Council at Old St. Patrick parish. Each parish

needs a parish council according to Canon and Diocesan law. I have had a few volunteers so far, but I was hoping for a much more enthusiastic response. This is an opportunity for you to have a say in what direction the parish should go, what formation initiatives to undertake, how to best to spend our money on building and ground needs. I need faithful and happy people to step up and volunteer to have their name in the selection process. I don’t want to make all the decisions on my own, without your input and ideas. Some qualities of persons who would make good council members are: they must be confirmed Catholics outstanding in and firm in faith and morals who hold and exemplify the teachings of the Catholic Church (Canon 512). They need to be persons who are willing to work with others in collaboration, “fully relying on the Holy Spirit to seek consensus in prayerful discernment.” (Diocesan Norms) The norms point to the first Church council at Jerusalem in AD 50 where the words of Acts 15:28 “It is the decision of the Holy Spirit of and of us…” suggest responsibility was exercised in a collaborative and collegial manner. What does it mean to be collaborative? That means council members search for wisdom for the course of action that has the best hope of being what God wants for the parish. They come together to make decisions as a parish leadership body, weighing and judging in light of God’s will. They must ask themselves: “how can we discover not our own will… but God’s will for us?” (Diocesan Norms) They come to agreement through consensus rather than by taking a vote. The consensus model seeks God’s will for the parish: information is brought forth, surrounded by prayer, and God’s will is discerned through honest and respectful discussion. Consensus is built on prayer, mutual trust of among persons, and honors the teachings of the Church. Consensus is not majority rule, compromise (people don’t give in to keep peace), competition, quick decisions, dependence on a leader (all engage in discussion) (Diocesan Norms) Persons willing to serve this way nurture an attitude of openness, honesty, respect for others’ ideas, patience. According to the Norms what is harmful is an attitude of “rigidity of opinions, hostile or suspicious attitude, determination to win, sabotaging the process.” As you can see the Church foresees a respectful and open process of arriving at decisions to present to the pastor. I am confident many of you are holy, gifted, and talented individuals who are up to working together in this way for the good of the parish. I look forward to forming the council soon and beginning the work with you. ~Fr. Tom

Young Family Adoration Come join other families with young children in adoring Our Lord directly after the 4:00 p.m. Mass on July 1st at Old St. Patrick's. We will have times of silence, recited prayers, and singing during a holy half-hour with Fr. Tom. This time of prayer is "tolerant" - we are okay with noisy young children! Immediately following adoration, we will gather for a picnic outside the parish hall. The main dish will be provided. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share.

Be A Member (officially!) If you regularly attend Old St. Patrick, please consider filling out a parish registration form, if you haven’t already. Just call the office and we will mail or email you a form, so that we can have up-to-date records. If you are already a member, please make sure we have your email address.

Special Mass

Old Saint Patrick parish will have a special Mass at 7 pm, on Monday, June 26, the Memorial Feast of St. Josemaría Escrivá, the founder of Opus Dei. Opus Dei (Latin for "Work of God") is a personal prelature of the Catholic Church, whose mission is to spread message that all Christians are called by God to make Christ known and to seek holiness in and through their daily work, family life and social relations. Pope St. John Paul II described him as "a patron of the ordinary life". You are cordially invited to join with families and friends of the Work from around the area for the Mass. There will be light refreshments served afterward in the parish hall.

Youth Group Outing!! Saturday, July 29 10:30am-1:30pm. Join your friends from the parish at Hudson Mills Metro Park for an “All Wheel-day.” You’re welcome to bring your bike, roller blades, or scooter to ride, skate, or scoot from the Metro park to Dexter and back (~10 miles).
