CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MATTHEW THE APOSTLE, WASHINGTON, D.C. JANUARY 12, 2014 TODAY’S READINGS esus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan. (Matthew 3:13) It’s a big day! After thirty hidden years in Nazareth, Jesus the Messiah is on the move, going public with his mission to heal and save. As John baptizes him in the Jordan, Jesus is revealed as Savior, Suffering Servant, and “beloved Son” (Matthew 3:17). Today the heavens open, the Father speaks, the Spirit descends—the whole Trinity is revealed. No wonder artists who have painted this scene tend to fill it with rays of light, glowing doves, and clouds of angels! There’s something else going on here, though, that is harder to paint. That’s because it has to do with humility. Consider John. Here’s a man with a clear understanding of his mission. He’s a herald preparing the way for someone “mightier” (Matthew 3:11). He is the best man and not the bridegroom. Then suddenly, the Messiah shows up, and John is taken aback. You can almost hear his mind racing, as he tries to prevent Jesus from going ahead: This can’t be what God wants! I’m not worthy. I need your baptism, not vice versa (Matthew 3:14). Yet even in his confusion, John is humble enough to grasp that God’s plan may be different from what he thinks. At a word from Jesus, he accepts a role he never sought. And who can fathom the depths of Jesus’ humility? Consider him there, looking like just another penitent in the crowd. Out of love, the sinless One joins with sinners—with us—to show that he is truly “God with us,” even in our repentance. For the rest of his days on earth, he will continue to be one like us. Last year, Pope Francis told a group of priests that shepherds should have “the smell of their sheep.” Jesus, mingling with the lost and needy sheep at the Jordan, shows us what that means. So never forget that whatever your “odor,” Jesus is not put off. He is, and always will be, God with you. “Who am I, Lord, that you would offer me so much? Jesus, teach me to be like you!” Taken from The Word Among Us, December 2013, Vol. 33, Number 1: Used with permission. NEWS AND NOTES

We pray for the repose of the soul of Deacon Ulysses S. Rice, a retired permanent deacon for the Cathedral of Saint Matthew the Apostle, Washington, DC, who passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2014.

Deacon Rice was ordained to the permanent diaconate for the Archdiocese of Washington on September 30, 1978. He was assigned to the Cathedral where he served until he retired from diaconal ministry. Deacon Rice was active in the Cathedral Club and the Reparation Society, and assisted at Mass into his retirement years.

Deacon Rice had great passion and sensitivity for the disabled, particularly for the sight-impaired. He was appointed to the Board of the Aid Association for the Blind of the District of Columbia in 1993, and was a spiritual associate through the ministry of the blind as a volunteer for eleven years. In 2008, he was presented by Cardinal Wuerl with a Legacy Award for his work with the Blind Awareness Project at a Mass marking the 30th anniversary of the United States Catholic bishops’ pastoral statement, Welcome and Justice for Persons with

Disabilities - a Framework of Access and Inclusion. A funeral Mass for Deacon Rice will be celebrated at

the Cathedral on Saturday, January 18 at 10am. Please pray for the repose of the soul of Deacon Rice, and keep his family in your prayers as well. ALWAYS GOD’S CHILDREN – Always God's Children, the Cathedral parish's gay and lesbian ministry, will meet Sunday, January 12 in the West Conference Room at 3:30pm. RECTORY HOURS – The Rectory office hours for

January 5 through January 25 are as follows: Monday – Thursday 9am – 4:30pm Friday 9am – 4pm Saturday – Sunday Closed FEDERAL HOLIDAY – Monday, January 20 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a Federal holiday. The Cathedral will open at 7:30am and close at 1pm. Masses will be at 8am and 12:10pm with no Confessions. Together, all four ensembles will perform pieces highlighting the music of New Zealand and Kenya. The evening will be a wonderful way to ring in the new year. CARDINAL’S APPEAL

Many parishioners received a mailing from Cardinal Wuerl this week asking that they pledge to the 2014 Cardinal’s Appeal. The Appeal funds not only the operations of the archdiocese, but services that are of great help to St. Matthew’s Cathedral parish. For example, Appeal funds provide financial support for the seminarians from our parish and educational seminars and conferences for our priests. The Appeal theme is “Seek First the Kingdom of God.” (Matthew 6:33) As we seek first God’s kingdom, we have the capability of helping to make it present in the world around us through our works of charity, love and compassion. Contributing to the Appeal offers each of us the opportunity to respond to the needs of others by enabling ministries and services that touch thousands of lives. Please prayerfully consider a generous pledge to the 2014 Cardinal’s Appeal. Thank you.

FAITH FORMATION

AWAKEN YOUR FAITH! – Fallen out of touch with weekly Mass? Looking to get reconnected with your faith? Then join one of St. Matthew’s Awakening Faith groups, an easy way to meet others and get reacquainted with your faith over the course of six weeks. These peer-led small group discussions will allow you to reengage in the faith, reinvigorate your own spirit, and enliven your experiences in daily life. The six Awakening Faith sessions will take place weekly with 90-minute meetings to provide a smooth pathway to spiritual growth while maintaining a friendly and informal atmosphere. Sign up after Mass on Sunday, January 12, or email [email protected] with your name, phone number, and day of the week that would work best for you to meet regularly in the evenings. We will then match you with a group that can best meet your availability. Please email us by Wednesday, January 15. Meetings will start the week of January 27.

BOOK CLUB: TRANSATLANTIC – All are welcome to join the Book Club on Monday, January 27 for a discussion of TransAtlantic by Colum McCann. The backdrop for this 2013 novel about an Irish housemaid and her daughter and granddaughter is three transatlantic crossings: Frederick Douglas’ 1845 visit to Ireland, the 1919 flight of British aviators Alcock and Brown, and former United States senator George Mitchell’s 1998 attempt to mediate peace in Northern Ireland. The Book Club will meet at

6:45pm in the West Conference Room (accessible via the alley to the left of the front of the Cathedral). BECOMING CATHOLIC – Throughout the year, adults come forward seeking to learn about the Catholic faith. For those who are interested in learning about the Catholic faith or thinking about becoming Catholic, St. Matthew’s offers Inquiry, a casual, ongoing conversation about the Catholic faith, once a month. Inquiry is the first step in the process of discerning one’s commitment to full initiation in the Catholic Church. Inquiry meets on the second Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 7:30pm in the East Conference Room. A brief overview of the entire adult initiation process (RCIA), which begins formally in June each year, can be presented after Inquiry for those who are interested. The next Inquiry will be held Wednesday, February 12. For more information, contact Heather Kinney at [email protected]. IGNATIAN RETREAT IN DAILY LIFE – The Jesuit Center for Spirituality offers a week-long retreat in daily life based at St. Matthew's January 26 - February 1, designed especially for those new to praying with Scripture in an Ignatian way. Retreatants spend ½ hour reflecting on a suggested scripture passage and ½ hour in private meeting with a spiritual director each day, Monday through Friday. A director will be available at St. Matthew’s daily between 11:30am and 1:30pm. The retreat opens with a gathering on Sunday, January 26, 3-5pm and closes with a session on Saturday, February 1, 8:30-10:30am. Group meetings will be held at Holy Trinity Church, 3513 N St. NW. Pick up a registration form at the Cathedral main entrance or at www.trinity.org/spirituality. Contact: Martina O’Shea at 202-903-2810 or [email protected].
