Win, Win.Like most cattlemen we have been very grateful by the results of all our endeavors. Bull sales have been very rewarding and the motivation to improve on the originals has never been greater. Equally satisfying have been the times we have taken cattle to the sale barn, be it cull cows or feeder cattle. The industry has never been stronger. We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every operation that took the time to evaluate our program and especially those that participated at our sale March 25th. THANK-YOU.

The economics just didn’t add up.

Median household net wealth decreased 27% between 2000 and 2010, according to the U.S. Consumer Price Index. Canadians were in the same financially leaky boat.

“Research would show that during an economic downturn, people tend not to buy premium products, to a point where they will go to a private brand or a lower price competitor to save money,” University of Guelph (Ontario) business and economics professor Tanya Mark

says. “For any premium brand, we would certainly expect sales to decrease.”

Yet in 2010, just after the toughest segment of America’s Great Recession – December 2007 through May 2009 – she attended an Ontario cattle business conference and heard about a branded beef company with sales results that were completely counterintuitive.

She tried to explain the record-breaking sales with various other theories.

But the product category’s total consumption was down, too, another sign that the premium end should have been slipping. In the first decade of this century, annual per capita red meat consumption decreased from 120.8 pounds to only 108.7 pounds.

Meanwhile, this brand went from $350 million in annual sales in 2000 to more than $775 million ten years later, with 40% more pounds sold (See Chart below). The premium product did follow one trend of its category, however, mirroring record high beef prices.

“It’s a very well-known theory that as price decreases, the quantity demanded increases?” she says. “When you see a very large increase in sales, you must have dropped your prices, right?”

Wrong. The company’s average annual price moved from $1.15 per pound in 2000 to $1.64 in 2010.

“So, even though the price continues to rise, and it is still rising, demand is still increasing,” Mark says.

To figure out why, she and colleagues in Canada, France and Australia looked at total monthly sales volumes for the Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand from 2000 through 2010, plus a breakout of monthly foodservice and retail sales volumes from 2006-2011.

Results formed the basis for a white paper for CAB available at http://www.cabpartners.com/news/research.php and entitled, “Cross-Category Indulgence: Why Do Some Premium Brands Grow During Recession?”

Overall industry trends were cross-referenced with wholesale beef prices reported by Urner-Barry for a unique data set that allowed the team of marketing researchers to analyze overall demand throughout an entire business cycle.

But making sense of it all would take more than numbers, so Mark turned to her expertise in consumer insights.

“There is a lot of research around luxury, alpha brands that show our status – it’s signaling,” Mark says. “We aspire for a premium brand or a luxury brand to signal to others we are successful.”

Food in general is considered a utilitarian good, a necessity for survival.

“But because CAB is a premium food product, our research would show that it is, in fact, a luxury good because consumers tend to derive a lot more pleasure from it,” Mark explains.

That changes the standard economic application, and adds an important phrase to cattlemen’s vocabulary: hedonic consumption. From the Greek word for “pleasurable,” it’s a descriptor for any good that’s purchased primarily for the pleasant experience it delivers, but it better deliver.

“Consumers making hedonic purchases are less sensitive about the price of a product when the objective of the purchase is a pleasurable experience,” the white paper says.

“Based on this research, we would argue that desire, that demand just doesn’t go away – we still have this desire to enjoy life and derive pleasure when we’re consuming things. But we’re also constrained by our budgets during an economic recession,” Mark says.

The data shows a desire for luxury items is universal and certainly not guided by affluence.

“Although luxury goods were hit hard during the recession,” the paper notes, “the stark recovery of this category cannot be explained by purchasing habits of the affluent consumer alone. One possible explanation for this surprising increase in demand for luxury goods is related to the substitution effect.”

That’s where the multi-market data on CAB sales came in handy. When the researchers started comparing the data of restaurant sales against grocer sales, they found significant impact in what they termed “cross-category indulgence,” or more simply put, substitution.

“Ten years ago, we were commodity driven and focused solely on being a low-cost producer,” says Ryan Kasko, a 17-year veteran of the feedlot business. “But I think there’s a new mentality with the importance of brands like Certified Angus Beef [CAB] that have developed over time. Today, we’re seeing more of a reward from the packer for quality carcasses.”

He owns and operates Kasko Cattle Co. Ltd. near Coaldale, AB, in partnership with his wife, siblings and their spouses. The custom feeding operation with 40,000-head capacity in four locations was named 2014 Western Feedlot of the Year by the Canadian Angus Association last fall.

Along with four other feedlots – Kolk Farms, Stronks Feedlot, Murray Farms, and KCL Cattle Co. – Kasko is part of a peer advisory board called the Allied Marketing Group (AMG), with member capacity of more than 100,000 head. AMG made industry news in 2013 for developing a relationship as CAB feeding partners.

It’s all about Quality

“In the 1990s, feedlot operators focused on average daily gain as a measure of success,” Kasko says. “By the 2000s, we were looking more at feed conversion to calculate efficiency. Now, we’ve realized that we’re selling carcasses that are turned into beef, and are focusing more on carcass size, gain and value.”

That’s a subtle shift beyond the live cattle perspective to growing carcasses efficiently, while achieving better yield and quality grades.

“By consistently producing high-quality carcasses, we’re striving to

differentiate beef from other meats in the minds of consumers,” he adds. “We want to create a product that is less substitutable with pork or chicken, so that consumers can enjoy eating our beef every day and will choose beef when they want a great meal.”

That’s why AMG allied with CAB in the first place. Now, Kasko and his peers are looking to build relationships with ranchers and backgrounders who supply them with cattle.

“Even though I’ve been buying cattle directly from ranchers for 17 years, I still don’t know enough about what they do, and they don’t know enough about what I do,” Kasko says. “Very seldom do I have cow-calf producers come to see how their calves finish out at my lot.”

That should change in the years ahead as he and other AMG members build up the number of feeding partnerships with those raising cattle with consistently superior beef in terms of both quality and yield.

“Generally, we’re able to attract certain premiums on Angus cattle based on their ability to make quality grades,” says Kasko. “For example, 33% of black heifers qualify for CAB premiums. But we need to balance marbling score with too much external fat and lower yield grades.”

Importance of Partnerships

“We’ve been fortunate in our relationship with Cargill in that we receive individual carcass data,” he says. “Lots of people can get that information, but not everyone has a way to utilize and make sense of the data. We [AMG] took a different approach by building our own database and analytical tools.”

Its database, called Athena, marries feedlot and carcass data to analyze individual animal performance, right down to the dollar impact. Kasko

has been able to identify the most profitable calves in his feedlot – those that grade AAA Yield Grade 1.

“Now that we can identify these cattle, we can provide the information back to the ranchers producing those calves,” he says. That way, they can make more of the best.

With four years of data now in the system, patterns are appearing.

“We’ve purchased cattle from certain people year after year, and we’re starting to see trends. It seems to be that there are some groups of cattle that can do it all for us—both quality and yield grades. I’ve definitely been able to identify certain cow-calf producers who have particularly good cattle that I didn’t necessarily know the specifics of their cattle before,” says Kasko.

“I don’t know if it’s by fluke or by design,” he adds, “but we are also seeing certain groups improving – I think it’s due to the fact that we’re all striving for higher quality. The ranchers may be more conscious of it when they’re making their bull selections, and maybe even looking to help the feedlot by focusing on disease mitigation with their vaccination protocols.”

Adding Value

For 15 years, AMG feedlots kept detailed records of animal weights, health treatments and feed history. They also tried to obtain as much history as possible on the animals entering their pens, such as breed, source herd and vaccinations.

Athena using electronic ID tag numbers to link that information to carcass attributes such as marbling score, yield grade, carcass weight and ribeye area.

“Analysing the data is a full-time job,” Kasko says. “That’s why we hired Dr. Steve Hendricks to crunch the numbers. It was a big task, but Athena can now export meaningful data into Excel spreadsheets, which can be shared with cow-calf producers and used as a tool to improve management.”

Cooperation along the production chain can enhance profitability for all, he says: “Through partnerships, we hope to build value and eliminate waste. Feedback can improve genetics and minimize health costs by preventing duplicate vaccinations or treatments, and reducing logistical costs.”

Cattle that perform well in the feedlot and yield optimal carcasses can mean profit of up to $70 per head, according to Kasko. On the flip side, poorer performing animals can lose that much in the same market.

“We don’t expect to make $70 per head on every animal we buy, but I’d be willing to share this kind of profit back with cow-calf producers,” Kasko says. “Feeding cattle for quality is not necessarily the most profitable in the short term, but by satisfying customers with top quality we hope to build for long-term success.”

Kasko credits CAB for providing a forum and structure to make it all work.

“Our partnership with CAB has helped get the Allied Marketing Group name out in front of cow-calf producers, and helped us build relationships with these folks,” Kasko says. “They’ve also helped us get closer to our end customers by introducing us to packers, retailers, restaurants and distributors. We want to build trust will all of these people, and build on our reputation for quality.”

First Feedlot: Maximizing Innovation for Profit Event Proves to be a Great Success in Lethbridge

April 2, 2015 for immediate release

ROCKYVIEW, AB- This past week the Canadian Angus Association (CAA) partnered with Certified Angus Beef® (CAB) to host an event focused on the feedlot sector of the beef industry. The event took place in Lethbridge, AB on March 31, 2015. There were approximately 52 participants and seven informative speakers. The day began with Casey G. Vander Ploeg, Manager of Policy and Research with the National Cattle Feeders’ Association (NCFA). Vander Ploeg discussed the Canada’s national beef strategy with the group, sharing the new video series that explains the new strategy. Next was Brian Perillat, Manager and Senior Analyst at Canfax. Perillat reinforced that the beef industry is still seeing great prices and that it is a good time to be in the industry. To discuss the feedlot perspective was Leighton Kolk, owner of Kolk Farms and partner in the Allied Marketing Group (AMG). Kolk talked about his experiences with feeding cattle in southern Alberta and AMG’s partnership with Certified Angus Beef. John Paterson serves as the Executive Director of Education for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). Paterson lives in Montana and showed the group, the similarities within the United States and Canada’s beef industries. Paterson discussed consumers’ perception and which growing trends that those already in the industry must watch for. The afternoon had three great speakers, starting off with John Lines from the Cargill plant in High River. Lines is the Operations Manager of Cargill Animal Protein. Lines explained to the group what affects the processing industry. He emphasized cooperation among everyone along the supply chain to ensure that the best quality product will end up at the processing plant, and therefore higher profitability achieved for everyone. He stressed other key things that they need at the processing plant in order to optimize efficiency. The Bolduc brothers from Cudlobe Angus, David and Dyce, gave an update on their operation and how genetics play a large factor in their decision making process. The Bolduc’s spoke about how selection for certain traits will maximize functionality and carcass traits. Larry Corah, VP of Supply Development for Certified Angus Beef®, wrapped up the day by deliberating about the growth and potential for CAB in Canada. Corah showed the group that CAB has grown exponentially in Canada in recent years. Feedback was positive from participants. Tim Andrew, Youngstown, commented, “I came to the event because of the program. Where else could you get a sense of today’s market outlook, American market and consumer trends and talk about the most fa-mous branded beef program?” There will be more events like this in the future for CAA and CAB. With the success of the first “Feedlot: Maximizing Innovation for Profit,” this type of event will take place every two years in southern Alberta.

NOT TAKEN FOR GRANTED

Shorty had met his wife a long time ago at a rodeo in a local town. She was there with some friends and he was there helping a friend of his with the rodeo stock. They had bumped into each other at the beer gardens after the rodeo was over and their meeting was purely by chance. Shorty seldom made eye contact in public, especially with the ladies and when he bumped into her by accident, spilling her beer all over her tee shirt, he didn’t know whether or not he should run.

He decided to stay and help her out and…well one thing lead to another and they ended up married a couple of years later. Their courtship was pretty ordinary, she worked for the Forest Service and they made the best time they could during the dating phase. Actually Shorty was pretty happy the way things were going…until that early spring day the year they married.

She had decided that Shorty needed to meet her parents. Shorty had heard lots about them, he had even seen some photos, and he was pretty sure that the actual meeting thing just may have been over rated. He knew they were ranchers, and that they lived about a twelve hour drive away.

“Are you sure they have time for us?” Shorty asked.

“Yes. Dad is finished calving and Mom said they will be home this weekend. It will be fine.”

So it was that the two of them found themselves driving down a dirt driveway into a humble looking yard early one afternoon. As the pick up rolled to a stop in front of the house, a lady Shorty recognized as his future Mother in law ran towards the truck, arms open to her daughter.

“Ma’am” Shorty greeted her once he was introduced.

“Oh Shorty…call me Jean!”

“Yes Ma’am.”

Jean’s eyes were focussed on something behind Shorty, and when he turned to look he saw the father in law walking towards the three of them.

“Frank…come and say hi to Shorty!”

Frank ignored his wife’s request entirely; instead he embraced his daughter with a clumsy albeit a genuine hug.

“Dad…this is Shorty, Shorty…my Dad”

“Sir.”

“Shit son. My name is Frank. Use it.”

“Yes sir…Frank.”

The four of them spent the evening talking, well three of them talked….Shorty mostly listened. They seemed to be a pretty good family and Shorty went to sleep that night feeling pretty good about himself.

The next morning the women decided they needed to go into town for a bit, so Frank suggested that maybe Shorty could go with him. Frank was off to a neighbor’s place to look at some bulls. Shorty figured that sounded safe, so he set off with Frank in the ranch rocket.

“What do ya look for in a bull?”

Shorty looked across the truck at the old man. “Well…I would have to see the cows…”

Shorty paused. Frank smiled at his prisoner.

“Well…..I’ll tell you what. I look at buying a bull ‘bout the same as I look at pickin’ a son in law.”

Shorty swallowed….hard.

“You want the same thing, if you think about it.”

“Sir?”

“A bull has to have to have a good solid confirmation; he has to be pleasing to the eye.” Frank glanced to his right, Shorty was sitting bolt upright, staring straight ahead. He smiled to himself.

“He has to have good strong genetics…..you an only child Shorty?”

“Yes Sir.”

“Hmmmm.Your Dad and Mom still with us?”

“Yes Sir.”

“They both get around okay?” Frank didn’t wait for the answer. “Are they both still pretty sharp?”

“Yes Sir.”

“Only one kid though huh? My bull has to be a breedin’ son of a bitch. He has got to get out there and get the job done. None of this laying around under a tree all day….he has to get out and go.”

Shorty stared straight ahead. He had lost track of the conversation. Was Frank talking about his bulls or his wish list for a son in law? Shopping with the girls was starting to look pretty good right about now. Shorty suddenly realized that Frank was still talking.

“He’s got be solid on his feet and legs and anything that don’t pass the semen test around here gets his head cut off. You with me on this Shorty?”

“Sir?”

Frank glanced over at the young man. He was jammed into the corner of the seat, smiling nervously at the driver.

“You okay?”

“I’ve never been semen tested” Shorty blurted.

“What the hell are you talking about?” Frank paused, mostly for effect, and then began to laugh. “Geez Shorty….are you nervous or what? I am talking about bulls here. My daughter can make up her own mind, always has. Besides, she ain’t near as picky with her men as I am with my bulls.”

Shorty glanced to his left. Frank was grinning from ear to ear. They spent the rest of the day looking at bulls, then cows before returning the ranch for supper. That evening was a lot more comfortable for Shorty than the first night had been and as he listened to the stories and the good natured banter between the members of the family he realized that Frank had bred way over his head as well.

This story is dedicated to Frank Strimbold. Frank and Dianne touched a lot of lives over the years and I was lucky enough to be one of them. He suggested this story line to me a couple of years ago; he thought it would make a good story. Unfortunately Frank lost his battle with cancer in March of this year. He will be missed, but never forgotten by all of us that were lucky enough to have known him.

Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia. After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in addition to all major livestock shows, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Canadian Western Agribition, and all major national Junior shows in the summer months. Grant and Lauralee Rolston reside in Vulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.”

April 16, 2015 for immediate release

ROCKYVIEW, AB - Carcass 101, a producer-focused training about beef cattle meat quality, will take place on June 8th-10th in Olds, AB. The event will commence with a reception on the Monday night followed by two-days of learning in the National Meat Training Centre at Olds College. Association CEO Rob Smith says, “We are very proud to work with the most knowledgeable resource team available to deliver information from further down the beef value chain back to its genetic seedstock and primary producer sources. As Canada’s dominant beef breed, it is our responsibility to ensure such technology transfer exists for supporters of Angus genetics. Additionally, we owe it to the Canadian beef consumer to do our best and provide them with the best quality beef each time they dine.” This is the second year for this initiative hosted by the Canadian Angus in partnership with Certified Angus Beef ®, supported by the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA). The agenda for the two-day course includes analysis of multiple finished cattle from live evaluation through identification of the parts and value of their carcass merit, global differences in carcass utilization, a cutting demonstration and utilization of carcass data as well as discussions of genetics, genomic testing and opportunities for market growth. A previous Carcass 101 student said, “I joined the Association last year ago and am very impressed with the support network and information they provide; a great value for my money.” Another student of the first Carcass 101 added, “I have learned a great deal today. The presentations were excellent. My knowledge is greatly improved.” This year’s event will feature a qualified list of speakers and demonstrations for all who partake. For the full agenda and registration information, visit www.cdnangus.ca The Canadian Angus Association is Canada’s largest purebred beef breed organization. The Association represents 3,000 members across Canada for the purposes of registering and recording the pedigrees of purebred Angus cattle in the closed HerdBook and promoting the breed across Canada. The member-approved mandate is to maintain breed registry, breed purity and provide services that enhance the growth and position of the Angus breed.

What a great spring it has been. Record cattle prices are the headlines in any agricultural publication you pick up. This spring’s bull sales were simply amazing as well! Many of the sales were up 30% or better than last year, putting big smiles on breeders’ faces. They finally saw extra reward for all their investment and time committed in being a seed stock producer. The guys buying bulls were happy giving it too, as they already had seen bigger profits from their calves and record salvage out of their old bulls. There were many record averaging and grossing sales, with several record selling individuals too!

It was fun to visit with beef producers as we traveled up and down the road, every week they marvelled over the cattle market and how it just seemed to get a little higher each week. This left many of the number crunching analysts scratching their heads as well. Even though the retail prices have climbed (19% higher this March than March of 2014,) the demand is staying strong. Retail beef prices have long gone past the level where the “experts” predicted we would hit resistance. A couple of things have worked in our favour though, low oil prices have led to savings at the pump, which helped the average consumer balance the budget. Also the price of “other” proteins have risen as well. Pork prices were up 16% in the first quarter of 2015, led by bacon up an amazing 24%; the bacon on a” Baconator” is becoming a pricy option to go with North America’s beloved hamburger. Chicken rose in the first quarter as well 6%.

There is a lot of room for optimism as we look to the future; beef is still considered the King of the Bar-B-Q. With summer right around the corner, peak beef consuming months are ahead. Every time I eat out, which is often being on the road in excess of 250 days a year, I pay attention to what people are ordering around me and more often than not, it’s beef and the fancier the restaurant, the more they want quality beef cuts. I actually eat more out of a brown

bag than I do a sit down restaurant though and I tell you even with as many burger joints as there are, pick anyone of them at meal time and there is nothing “fast” about them. Every fast food chain you pull into at lunch or supper time has a line up and it’s mostly burgers going out the window. Beef consumption is still strong even at today’s prices and supply is not keeping up, beef production in Canada is down 5.4% year to date. There will be 100,000 less calves born in Western Canada this spring.

The rebuilding process will begin its long and slow road back next year as heifers being bred this year will begin to calve, but if Canada continues at a similar cow slaughter rate as last year, it will be somewhat offset again. No matter how we look at it or approach it, the better part of the next decade will be spent rebuilding Canada’s cow herd that eroded away over the past dozen years.

Another thing this rebuilding process is going to need and none of the number crunching analysts talk about it, is youth. We are going to need to retain and attract back more of our beef farm kids home to the ranch. It is crucial to the beef industry today that we achieve this task. Our group of companies has always been one of this nation’s largest beef junior association supporters and I hope you will join us June 23rd and 24th as a sponsor of the 8th annual T Bar Invitational. An event to raise money for junior associations to enhance their programming to keep youth interested and involved in the beef industry.

Growth in Sales of Certified Angus Beef® Brand vs. Price

“We all want to dine out and eat the best food and enjoy and indulge. But we can’t all do that all the time, especially in a recession,” Mark says. “So going to a cross-category is this ‘dining in’ where you’re still buying the premium cut and enjoying it at home.”

Buying that premium, high-priced steak at the retail store is worth the pleasurable experience – as long as the product consistently delivers. What goes out of the wallet must be made up for with taste-bud gratification.

“If there is a message for anyone in this research, it would be the importance of a premium product,” Mark says. “There are more and more people who want that hedonic consumption and really, really want a premium product.”

Fortunately, marbling is a production trait for which cattlemen can select and manage. That’s important if beef producers want to continue to swim against a current of economic realities – cattle prices are more than healthy, which makes beef prices higher than many consumers can afford as a necessity item. The only thing that will keep them coming back to the meat counter is quality – or the promise of a hedonic experience.

“The message to producers is – the cost of acquiring Certified Angus Beef-type cattle – or whatever it takes to get that premium product – is becoming more and more important,” Mark says. “If you’re paying attention to this, you’re going to increase your profits, right?”

It has staying power, too, the research indicates. In the years since Mark and colleagues were crunching the Recession-era numbers, the CAB brand hit an eighth consecutive year of record sales in 2014.

“When the economy recovers, consumers not only continue to indulge in a premium brand in one category – dining in – but also return to consuming the premium brand in general – dining out,” Mark says.

“It comes back to that notion of the quality of the beef. If you have a premium, quality product to offer consumers, the likelihood of your product experiencing similar growth is highly likely,” she says. “If red meat is not doing well, but you see Certified Angus Beef is doing well, we’re arguing that the only reason is its quality. And consumers want quality.”

My last article offered pointers on selecting bulls for your breeding program, but what happens when you get your bull home can have a tremendous impact on his reproductive success and your satisfaction with your purchase.

Many producers lack adequate facilities to house bulls; therefore, the preference is often to put off delivery as long as possible; hopefully just before he is needed. Arrival at a new facility is stressful for any animal – add to this a change in diet, social dominance issues, fighting, major or minor injuries, exposure to new bacteria and viruses to name a few. In an ideal world every bull would have his own pen since mixing of bulls invariably results in fighting to establish dominance. If mixing is to occur then bulls should be placed according to age/ size. Yearlings with yearlings; two-year olds and older together. Even better would be to mix two-year olds and mature bulls in their own respective groups. My preference when mixing bulls is that all go into a new pen together as opposed to introducing a single bull to an established group. Fighting will still occur, but the new guy is less likely to be the focus. Similarly, when putting bulls to pasture try to place young bulls with young bulls and mature bulls with mature bulls. Mixing age groups invariably results in the mature bull dominating the younger bull and interfering in his breeding attempts. If you want to use the younger bulls in this breeding group, let the mature bulls breed for the first cycle or two of the breeding season, remove them, and then follow with the younger bulls. This will also give the younger bulls more time to mature and fewer cows to breed.

The two main causes of declines in sperm quality are heat and stress. Heat may come from a fever, inflammation of the scrotum or an increase in environmental temperature. Fat deposits in the neck of the scrotum can also impair the testicular cooling mechanism. Pain, soreness from fighting, bad weather are some of the causes of stress; however, the stressor needs to be of about 3 to 4 days duration to have a negative effect on sperm quality. Chasing a bull up a chute won’t do it! The severity and duration of the heat and stress largely determine how bad the sperm will be affected and for how long. A single severe case of footrot may affect sperm production so dramatically that the bull will not have a satisfactory semen count (>70% morphologically normal) for the entire summer. Heat and stress can occur at the same time with a single condition. Bulls that are very sick for a few to several weeks may undergo testicular degeneration where the testicles actually shrink in size, sperm production is virtually eliminated and the few that are present are abnormal. Surprisingly, I have seen bulls recover from degeneration, but several months are required. Heat and stress tend to result in the appearance of the same sperm defects

which appear sequentially in the semen sample as the sperm enter the ejaculatory pool similar to the appearance of specific birth defects being linked to the stage of gestation when the toxin was consumed. Relatively minor cases of stress can result in an increase in sperm midpiece defects; specifically, the distal midpiece defect. The spermatogenic response to stress varies between bulls with some showing the defect and others not, but we do know that it is usually short-lived with many showing a full recovery in as little as 7 to 10 days.

We recommend 1 yearling to be placed with 15 to 20 cycling cows. “Yearling” is loosely used when referring to bulls 12 to 18 months of age. Two-year olds and older - 1 bull per 25 to 30 cows. Individuals in both age groups can handle more cows, but management must watch closely to ensure that cows are getting pregnant in a timely fashion and that the bull(s) do not lose excess condition or get injured. Bulls with larger scrotal circumferences produce more sperm and are more likely to settle more cows in a shorter time-frame than smaller scrotalled bulls.

Yearling bulls are commonly fed grain-based concentrate diets to grow them prior to sale. The more fleshy bulls are typically the best fed and can often have a hard time adapting to a forage-based diet at the same time that they are supposed to be breeding cows – hence the so-called “melting” phenomenon. When your bull is delivered ask what he has been fed and try to feed him similarly. If the breeder has moved him to a largely forage ration then great. Hopefully, it wasn’t just the day before! If concentrate was being fed, try your best to pick up the same or similar feed and continue feeding him at about 50 to 70% of what he was being fed and reduce the amount gradually until the desired amount is reached. The remainder of the ration should be good quality hay with a total ration protein content of at least 12%.

Hard working bulls usually lose some condition throughout the breeding season, but excessive weight loss should be avoided. It is common for yearling bulls to lose up to 2 cm in scrotal circumference between the beginning and end of breeding season. Yearling bulls are still growing and will serve a single cow many more times than a mature bull; usually at the expense of their own appearance. Inexperienced bulls are also more prone to breeding injuries; therefore, overuse should be avoided otherwise his first breeding season could be his last. Yearling and two-year old bulls should be pulled from the breeding field long before the cows come home and fed carefully to restore them to breeding condition for next year. Always vaccinate your bulls with the same vaccines used in the cow herd and consider employing a footrot vaccine.

Many commercial producers and purebred seed stock cattlemen often start to question the appearance of lots of droplets appearing on the semen evaluation forms of young bulls. These cause frustration when bulls have to be retested. They collectively are probably the most numerous defects we see as veterinarians when performing breeding soundness exams (semen evaluations) in the spring. This article will hopefully shed some light on the situation and take away some of this frustration by providing a better understanding of what they represent. There is no doubt we see many more droplets on average in young immature bulls that are just reaching sexual maturity (puberty). These bulls are less active and especially when not housed close to cycling females droplets really are a very frequent occurrence. One must realize two important facts. One is when maturing in the testicles epididymis (little knob at the bottom of the testicles) 100% of the sperm start with a proximal droplet. This is wiggled or shook off as the sperm matures and travels through the canals within the epididymis. Because the sperm with droplets are essentially not mature fertility is affected. When we look at distal droplets there are essentially two types those severely affected (pathologic) and those that will be shook off later (physiological). In a study by Dr. Jacob Thundathil of the UCVM (University of Calgary Veterinary Medicine) he found that the percentage of droplets in ejaculated sperm goes down in the time it is chilled to be frozen and put into straws for artificial insemination. This time interval is only three or so hours so if we extrapolate the same thing must happen with natural breeding. As the sperm is swimming up the vagina and into the uterus a number of these distal droplets are shook off and are left behind. As a result the distal droplets aren’t near as serious a defect as the proximal ones. As mentioned all sperm when formed start with a proximal droplet and as maturation in the canals of the epididymis these become distal droplets and then are shed off in the normal chain of events. If we see lots of proximal droplets they are often associated with other sperm defects such as head defects in a number of cases. Droplets are really the main cause why many young bulls fail their first semen evaluation especially when done at a very young age. This is why it is not recommended to test a beef bull before 12 months of age and bison mature much later so 18 months for them is the minimum age. As an average

Proximal & Distal Droplets In Young Bulls

By Roy Lewis DVM

that is why about 50% of twelve-month-old bulls pass and that is elevated to 75% by the time they are fourteen to fifteen months. Many very young bulls that fail on initial semen tests pass in subsequent ones one to two months later. The issue is why we as veterinarians can’t predict ahead of time which ones will improve greatly so the only way is retesting them. If the young bulls are housed close to cycling females and ejaculate off the senescent semen that in my opinion helps to speed up the improvement. With the veterinarian documenting on the semen form the morphological defects you can see over time if improvement is happening. The worst case I have seen improve was a young bull with essentially 100% proximal droplets and over several months the percentage kept decreasing and eventually he had excellent semen as a two year old. He was a show bull and the question always comes up was he too fat, inactive, et cetera which may have added to his issue for sure. When we encounter lots of droplets in mature bulls (that is much rarer) veterinarians usually are cognizant of which other defects accompany the droplets to determine the overall prognosis. Again the proximal droplets are much more severe than the distal droplets keeping in mind a certain percentage are shed before the sperm contact the egg in a natural breeding situation. If as producers you are evaluating semen forms then if most of the defects are distal droplets in a young bull and he still passes his semen test (overall defects are less than 30%) there is a very good chance those defects will lessen with maturity and usage. Over the years we have upped the ante by testing even younger bulls. In some instances bull sale dates have remained the same yet the purebred producers are calving later which translates into veterinarians testing younger and younger bulls. If just selling off the farm test the bulls as mature as possible. The warm spring weather and cows cycling close by really makes for an easier time evaluating sperm than in the dead of winter and with bulls just over one year of age. Even one to two weeks older makes a big difference. If semen evaluation is done later the pass rate will be higher and it will be easier on everyone including the bulls. Don’t ask your veterinarian to try evaluating bulls less than one year of age. Please wait till they are older as it is for yours and the bulls benefit.

Welcome to 2015. The past year has been a great one in the cattle industry and 2015 looks to be even better. I am so proud of the hard working; determined and innovative cattle breeders that have rode out the storm and are finally getting paid an honest dollar for their product.

I have been the President of the Canadian Angus As-sociation since June 2014. The time has flown by. It has been an interesting experience. I sincerely want to thank each and every member that contacted me personally to give me your views, comments and concerns. Your association needs your voice. I even want to thank the members who felt the need to call me “special names” as a part of a constructive criticism – your voice is important too! Without direct input – it is difficult to gauge the consensus of the membership - so we appreciate your direction.

As you may be aware, almost half of the Canadian Angus board were new directors this past year. These new directors have hit the ground running and I have been very impressed with the enthusiasm they have all shown. At our September meeting we did a lot of visioning for your association with many key goals set forth for the future. Goals such as the best customer service in the cattle industry; increased membership linkage, advanced tools and technology and improved communication strategies. From that came the

realization that to implement these goals we needed increased income and limited expense increase. Plain and simple. We have a brand new office that is creating member equity every day, but of course, we used our reserves to fund this sound investment. So, with all of these things in mind and the fact that a comprehensive fee increase had not happened since 1989; we have increased many of the fees. None of us like increases. Least of all my husband! I am in this with you - with a lot of calves to register and my sole livelihood comes from Angus cattle. However, I do not know of a single thing that is still the same price as it was in 1989 – not even the hairspray I used to used for my big 80’s hair. Please feel free to contact me, our CEO or any of your board members to discuss any concerns you have. As, I said before, we sincerely want to hear from you.

So as I wrap up my year as President, we have some exciting things planned for the National Convention that will be held in Calgary at our new headquarters. We hope to see many of you there. In closing, I would like to share my new motto for the year: “Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.” Best of luck calving (my favorite time of year!)

Page 81: Today's Angus Advantage - Spring Issue 2015

Surveys are a pain in the butt as they are tedious, unrewarding and mostly only useful to those who request them. The majority of surveys are conducted by government, where civil servants whose livelihood comes from the tax dollars of our hard working residents, justify their position of employment. In the late fall of 2014, Today’s Publishing circulated a survey to purebred seedstock producers throughout Canada and received reasonable participation and interesting responses. The questions ranged from breeder region and type of breed, herd data, marketing methods, selection criteria and communications...an area which peaked my interest. Since I am not a young puppy but rather an old dog, change has been a struggle for me ever since satellites began circling our globe.

In prehistoric times, communication was transmitted by fire, smoke signals, drums and horns. In 1838, the invention of the telegraph introduced the world to the age of wire communications and in 1876, Alexander Graham Bell invented what no one can live without. In 1927, television came to pass, two years later the fax machine was invented; although it took till 1964 for it to be as we know it today, it is rapidly becoming obsolete. A year after World War II, mobile telephones were developed for automobiles and in 1973, hand held cellular phones were introduced into society followed by the internet a decade later. In 1993, the only female Prime Minister, Kim Campbell was introduced into office from June through November and that same year, the Smart Phone was put on the market...bringing with it social media and an entire new segment of life.

In Today’s Publishing survey, every respondent owned a desktop or laptop computer, over seventy-five percent owned a Smart Phone, but less than sixty percent of breeders had a web site. While only thirteen percent of the respondents read our magazines online, almost ninety percent used Facebook with a lesser following on Twitter.

Social media is the top internet activity; users spend more time on it than any other major internet activity, including email. Sixty percent of this time is spent on Smart Phones and/or iPads. Facebook is the social media giant with a billion monthly users, of which a quarter of these users login at least five times per day. Teens to thirty year olds are the biggest users (nearly ninety percent) while on the other side, senior citizens are only forty percent users.

Social media has placed a huge shadow of influence on today’s society. As I look through Facebook, it seems to me it favors a journal of opinions and happenings from recipes, babies, kids, clothes, both blah and steamy gossip and in some cases a loss of privacy. Reading of the morning newspaper (to keep up with what is happening in society and the world) has become passé; to quote a co-worker, “I’ll find it on facebook.” Consider the hours of salary employers pay for social media usage...that statistic would be alarming!

Breeders who favor social media over printed literature have been relatively successful but use it more as a reminder concerning an animal or an event. It is simply too easy to be lost and forgotten in the big sea of postings that enter the system virtually, by the minute...if you want everyone to get your message...simply buck-up and pay. For your social media marketing to be effective, you still require a home base...a web site situated with a multi-breed provider that will give you simple and effective access. Time and money spent on maintaining and keeping a current web site with new pictures and information is a must in today’s markets. Having a web site versus using social media can be compared as “owning versus renting!”

Effective marketing programs are based on combining visual paper print and using the new electronic highway. Our largest customer base (average age of farmers and ranchers is fifty-eight) still like to read and view pictures...it is their decision to purchase your product which will keep your program moving forward!

The spring of 2015 has been monumental in setting historic records...it was great to see more of the younger generation selecting bulls and showing enthusiasm about the cattle industry. Building a junior base is key to strength and longevity for generations forward. The T Bar Invitational celebrates its eighth year by supporting and raising funds for youth in the livestock industry. Plan to be a sponsor or supporter on June 23 and 24th at Dakota Dunes...it’s an event you don’t want to miss...find it at www.tbarinvitational.com or on Facebook!
