P5 itataas sa LRT, MRT pasahe1 and 2 at sa Metro Rail Transit(MRT) Line 3 ng roughly P7 toP10 on the average which willbe split over two years.

It depends on the formulaof how the average is comput-

We just reconfirmed the de-cision that was made two yearsago because the rate hike wasnot implemented, sabi ni Her-nando Cabrera, board secretaryng LRTA.

things I personally desire. Goodthing I have a sweet hubby, whobuys those things for me onspecial occasions. If its a press-ing need, then I buy. Or, if itmarks an important milestone, Ibuy something special with aspecial price tag. Most of thetime, I wait until the item goeson sale. Spending wisely is veryimportant because many peopledont have jobs. Also, I priori-tize my scholars, and familymembers who need help fortheir medical needs. They aremore important to me than ma-terial wealth. Thats not spend-

ing; thats savingsaving lives.Rita AvilaI always buy what I really

need. Occasionally, I buy what Iwant. I compare prices when Igo to the grocery. I buy what Ithink is reasonably priced, qual-ity-wise. In restaurants, I dontmind paying more if the food isgreat. I eat well and exercise toavoid getting sick so I donthave to spend on medication.

As for expensive bags, I think ahundred times until my hus-band buys it for me.

Kim AtienzaI get to scrimp on hair care

because I always wear a hat. Idont need fancy gels and wax-es. I dont even need a brush.

But I never scrimpwhere my family is concerned. Iwant my wife Felicia and ourkids to have the best that lifehas to offer. Spending wiselymeans the biggest allocationsare for important things, suchas a beautiful home and quality

education. After money is setaside for these, then you canspend on luxury.

    By Dolly Anne Carvajal

CELEBS lead such charmed lives, you may besurprised to know that most of them have akuripot streak. Just like lesser mortals, their

gross spending doesnt always match their net income.

Take, for instance, this youngTV host/actress who demandsto split the bill every time shedines out with friendsas in,she makes sure everyone pays

the exact same amount. Or, thewife of a seasoned actor whobuys fake branded shirts for herhubbys TV appearances.Theres also this former matineeidol who relies on ex-deals foralmost everythingfrom hotelaccommodations to groceries.

Theres nothing wrong withbeing frugal. After all, its nothow much you earn but howmuch you save. This is especial-ly true in the unpredictable

world of show biz, where youcan be a millionaire today and apauper tomorrow. The trappingsof success can indeed be a trap.It reminds me of a poster whichsays: Money talks! All minesays is goodbye!

Work hard, spend moderate-ly, live easy!

Read on and see how somecelebs scrimp. Why not do thesameso you can stop asking

yourself after each payday,Where did my money go?

Pops FernandezI must say that I always

    avoid splurging unnecessarily. I

dont think the term for me iskuripot. Id rather say Im prac-tical. Its hard-earned money; I

want to spend it wisely.Ogie Alcasid

I am kuripot only with my-self. I like showering my lovedones with gifts that they willenjoy. My wife spoils me withnice things. Spending beyondour means would not be wisebecause our families need fi-nancial security. In the end, werealize that our money isnt re-ally ours but was lent to us as ablessing for us to be a blessingto others.

I dont go for brandnames when it comes to thetoys/gadgets and clothes ofmy kids. They dont mind

we ar in g lo cal br an ds as lo ngas theyre comfortable. Theimportant thing aboutspending wisely is you get tosave for your childrens fu-ture. As a mother, my priori-ties have changed. Before Ibuy something, I ask myselfif I really need it. Anak mu-na bago sarili.

Tailor-fit solutions to enhanceconnectivity in posh villages

Such solutions in-clude the use of out-door distributed an-tenna system (ODAS),

which makes use of aspecialized lamp postsbuilt with radio signal

transmission capabili-ty, as well as the useof cell sites disguisedas palm trees.

The advent ofsmartphone use hassharply increasedbandwidth require-ment in these exclu-sive villages andGlobe Telecom isready to implementsolutions that would

best address connec-tivity concerns inthese exclusive vil-lages, said Em-manuel Estrada,Globe Head of Net-

    work TechnologiesStrategy.

Currently, Globeservices are deliveredto subscribers in ex-clusive villagesthrough cell sites lo-cated around the vil-lage perimeter. How-ever, mobile phonesignals coming fromthese cell sites arentsufficient to meet cel-lular coverage re-quirement especiallyindoors in householdssituated farther fromthese facilities.

    The growing useof smartphone de-

    vices has consequent-

ly led to the need forfaster speed and moreefficient mobile dataservice requiring telcoproviders like Globeto enhance their mo-bile phone coverageand thus the necessityto build cell sites inexclusive villages,Estrada said.

According to Estra-da, the ODAS solution

    makes use of fiber-op-

tic cables installed inlamp posts along side-

walks to distribute abase stations signalsto multiple low poweractive antenna sys-tems installed in

    nominal locations in-side residential subdi-

visions. This enablesthe delivery of reli-able mobile phoneservice without theneed for gigantic cellphone towers.

On the other hand, the aesthetic tree so-lution, which makesuse of cell sites dis-guised as palm trees,

is another solutionthat the telcoprovider is ready todeploy in exclusive

villages to addressaesthetic concernsover the use of tower-ing cell sites.

Estrada emphasizedthat company effortsto deploy cell sites inexclusive villages is in

step with the compa-nys network and ITtransformation pro-gram, which involvesa complete change-outof equipment.

"We would like toenable all our cus-tomers to enjoy thebenefits of these net-

    work advancementsto its full potential,

    Estrada said.Estrada further em-

    phasized that allegedhealth risks associated

with exposure to radiowaves are unfounded. There is no reason tobelieve that exposureto low level of radiofrequency signals fromcell sites causes adversehealth impact, he said.

GLOBE Telecom is ready to providetailor-fit solutions that would signifi-cantly enhance connectivity in poshvillages amid growing use of band-width-intensive devices.

AFTER years of searching, James Forrester is final-ly home. Forrester has been in search for almosta decade of finding where he truly belongs. He

has been to the United States of America and Canada but

he felt like there was something more for him.He once tried out for the

Ateneo de Manila University butJames felt he wasnt ready tomake that move yet.

In 2010, the half-Filipino,half-Grenadian Forrester finallytook the risk and ventured his

way to the Philippines to playfor the Arellano UniversityChiefs. After three years, the23-year old Forrester knows heis home.

Forrester might be leavingthe NCAA but he is fulfilled. Inthe most unexpected of places,he has finally accomplished hislong-time mission.

The 62 Chief shared in anexclusive interview that he con-siders his teammates as hisbrothers. Forrester feels blessedthat even if he doesnt get tosee his family in Pangasinan be-cause of the tight schedule that

Collegiate ballers Kiefer Ravena and Baser Amer talk abouthow they stay buddies in a highly competitive court

    By Tatin Yang, Contributor

THOUGH Ateneo Blue Eagle Kiefer Ravena and SanBeda Red Lion Baser Amer dont duke it out onthe same basketball league, the two are consid-

ered rivals. Both reign supreme in their respective

courtsRavenas UAAP, Amers NCAAand parallels haveinevitably been made regarding their athletic prowess.

It was during a Nike Elitematch that the two playedagainst each other and discov-ered how equally matchedthey were. Kiefer recalled howhe first came across Basersskills on the court. Tapos naka-three point shot

siya . Dun na kami nag kaki lal atalaga, said Kiefer. We had alot of games against each oth-er sobrang competitivenaming dalawa.

The two became fast friends, though their competitive streak

still rears its head often, evenoff the court. Asked if their ri-

valry spills over their privatelives, both answered yes imme-diately. Nag-do-DotA kami sabahay ni Kiefer, said Amer.DotA is Defense of the Ancients,an online multiplayer battlegame. DotA, tapos asaran.

Lokohan. Yung bahay naminparang dorm ng mga players,

explained Kiefer. Lahat wel-come sa kanila, added Baser.

The two even rooted for dif-ferent teams during the NBAplayoffs. Kiefer was cheering forMiami Heat to win, while Baserinsisted the San Antonio Spurs

were going to take the champi-onship.

This year, the two playershave major roles in their respec-tive teams. Kiefer commented onhow the Red Lions is a team to

    watch, and admired Basers

playing style, especially his ball-passing skills. Its really hard todefend him at first; even if youstop him, another teammate ofhis will take advantage. Kahitna-stop mo, napasa na niya,

makaka-shoot pa rin yung team-mate niya. Two points, threepoints din yun kahit anong gaw-in mo, Kiefer said. When weasked Baser about Kiefers ownstrengths on the court, helaughed and said, Lahatstrength! Grabe yung confidenceniya, lalo na shooting niya. So-brang hirap bantayan, kailangani-double-team palagi.

On a personal level, Kieferpointed out how reservedBaser is. Mahiy ain siya. So-brang mahiyain. Sometimes he

would tell me things na diniya masabi sa iba, so natutu-lungan ko siya dun. My mom

would also give him advice, ganun , he said.

Though quiet and shy, Baseris a very encouraging friend, ac-cording to Kiefer. We have fun,

were friends on and off thecourt, and its really nice toknow na nag-e-exist yung gani-tong friendship, kahit sa basket-

ball na akala pag magkalaban, magkaaway, Kiefer mused.

The two have actually be-come better friends than rivals, such that playing against eachother now has funny conse-quences. Usually pag

naglalaro kamingdalawa, pangit na yunlaro namin kasinagkukulitan kami!

    said Ravena with alaugh.

    JERIC Teng: USTneeds his offense.

    KIMBERLY DELA CRUZ

Andre Paras: Nowhere to Go but UPBy Patrick Leonard MayoHIS UAAP DEBUT wasnt a stel-lar one. He didnt light up thescoreboard and got a first tasteof defeat at the hands of the

Adamson Falcons. But all isgood for Andre Paras who is op-timistic that things will soonchange for the better for the UPFighting Maroons.

Joining a team that has not

been winning many games overthe past several seasons shouldadd pressure to a rookie whohas a PBA legend and a formerUP star player in Benjie Paras(who led the Fighting Maroonsto the UAAP crown in 1986) fora father. But the 64 forwardout of La Salle Green Hills looksat things from a different per-spective.

    Im really not as pressured

as others may think sinceweve got seve ral new guyswho can also help the teamwin by all means , and thereare a lot more games to lookforward too as well. And Imno longer pressured carryingmy last name as my dad alsotold me to not mind the otherpeople and that I am differentfrom him, said the younger

    Paras.

    On-court and off-courtadjustments

Coming from an exclusive,Catholic all-boys high school toa bigger and more liberal com-munity like UP were one of hisbiggest challenges off the court. Its a huge campus and I stillget lost sometimes, he said.Im taking a car for safety rea-sons but I also ride the Ikot

    jeep sometimes.

Despite being one of theyoungest in the team, the 17-year-old forward says his older

teammates made his transitionsmoother as they would go outafter practice like a typicalbarkada would. Inside thebasketball court, he just had toundergo minor adjustments.

"The system here is very sim-ilar to my high schools sinceour coach in La Salle was underthe same coach (Joe Lipa). So

when I got into UP, I just had torefresh my memory and my at-tention is more focused on im-

    proving my strength.

Tiger king licks his woundsBy Ruth L. Navarra

TO shoot awkwardly with his left hand is theonly thing that Jeric Teng could do duringpractice last Friday (July 5).

Yet, even something as sim-ple as that takes too much ef-fort for unsatisfactory results. His shot would land short andnot even come close to the rimmaking him shake his head in

frustration. Some of his teammateswould stand next to him andwatch him do it. They wouldpatiently get the ball and waitfor him to try again.

Then coach Pido Jarenciowould shout something at theteam. The break is over. Tenghas to return to his placeatthe sidelines. He would watchhis team prepare for their up-coming opponent without him.

Gustokong makita yung progressnamin, he says when asked

why he still goes to practicesinstead of resting.

Teng is currently nursing aminor anterior labrum tear. Heis out of the team for an indef-inite period of time to recuper-ate. It is a blow to the USTGrowling Tigers.

His right arm needs to be ina sling to avoid movements. He cant move or raise his arm

without feeling any pain. Heneeds to undergo therapy

thrice a week for two weeks.Rest is the only thing he needsto heal completely.

It could take weeks, monthseven, of rest. Unfortunately, timeis something he does not have.

Its hard to say that I will beback 100 percent, he says.Pagkabalik ko, Ill do what Ican do. Kahit anong role angibigay sa akin ni coach, I willaccept it. Lahat ng ways, tutu-long ako.

To keep in shape, he sayshell be doing the stationarybike until the doctors give himthe go signal to run.

He also is quick to answerwhen asked if he still feels anyanger towards Javillonar.

Right now, wala na. Di kona siya iniisip. Mas focused naako sa recovery ko. Pero inten-tional man or not, sana maii-

wasan talaga mga ganung(pagkakataon) kasi lahat namantayo gustong manalo, he says.

He got injured when Jeof-frey Javillonar pushed himfrom behind during their gameagainst the NU Bulldogs. He

says that his doctors say thathe got the tear from the pushand not the fall.

Meanwhile, Teng is forcedto sit on the bench even duringpractice. The teams fans takethis as an opportunity to havea picture with him.

    A number of students actu-

ally risked raising the ire of thestern security guards just sothey could have a moment

with him. If the students getpast the guards, he obligesthem happily.

Student media would alsoask him for interviews. Some in-terviews wouldnt last for morethan five minutes while others

would take more. One of the in-terviewers squeals with delight

as she announces in front of thecamera that, Jeric Teng is singleand available!

The single and availableTeng is determined to returnon the second round of theelimination. He keeps sayingso. Meanwhile, his coach andteam work on adjusting theirgame in his absence.

Nabawasan ako ng leader.Yung leader mabigat yung pagnawalan ka. Pero life must goon. Kung sino ang natira dapat

magstep up sila, says Jarencio.Jeric is confident that his

teammates can get them to theFinal Four. He reminded this

writer that he was gone lastseason for three games and histeam won all three. But that

was a different team. It hadthe leadership of Jeric Fortunato fall back on.

They fared well without himagainst the UE Red Warriors, but they suffered a huge loss

against the FEU Tamaraws.Etong pain, sandali lang

to, he says. Pero ang mgalaro

He stops in mid-sentence ashe looks meaningfully at histeammates. It is obvious thatthe wounded tiger is itching to

    wear his jersey once more.

Sewa fierce and meanBy Patrick Leonard Mayo

WITH ALL THE foreign student-athletes invading the UAAP, In-grid Sewa of the Adamson Fal-cons could easily rank at thetop as far as looking fierce andmean go.

Towering at almost 610with a hulking frame to boot, any opponent would thinktwice on putting up a shot or

leaping for a rebound when heson the floor. But his intimidat-ing aura is exactly the opposite

when hes off the court.Sewa learned to play basket-

ball some three years ago andlike Karim Abdul of the USTGrowling Tigers, his first sport

was football, back when he wasstill in his hometown inCameroon.

When I came here, I wasstill learning the game, said

the Hotel and Restaurant Man-agement student.Recruited by veteran coach

Leo Austria, Sewa admits thatplaying in the UAAP isnt walkin the park.

The UAAP is really toughcompetition and I never playedat this level before. And this ismuch tougher than the Filoiltournament,

Having spent almost threeyears in the country, he recallshow hard it was to adjust ini-

tially when stepped foot on thecountry but has slowly settledand got the hang of things.

His daily adjustments werealso helped by the solid supporthe has been getting from the

Adamson community, particu-larly the students who watchtheir games live.

Hearing the crowd chantingand shouting Sewa, Sewa, makes me push harder and

builds up my confidence. But it was also difficult ad-

justing to some of the fans. I geta lot of text messages from sev-eral people and I dont evenknow how they got my num-ber, he said smiling.

His fellow Falcons have alsobacked him up in practices andoff the court, especially powerforward Rodney Brondial whohe considers to be his closestfriend on the team.

His first few games showedmuch promise as he posted dou-ble-doubles in points and re-bounds which gave headaches tohis defenders. In his debutagainst the UP Fighting Maroons,he exploded for 11 points in thethird quarter which gave themenough cushion to cruise for therest of the game.

He also dominated in theirwin against the UE Red War-riors with 15 points and 11boards in 24 minutes of action.

    SSC SHARPENING ITS SAW

    By Randolph Leongson

AYEAR ago, the people in redand gold of Recto placed alltheir bets on three Kapam-

pangan stalwarts to lead its squadto glory. This year, its a completelydifferent story.

Gone are the days that the famed Pinatubotrio of Calvin Abueva, Ian Sangalang, and

Ronald Pascual led the charge for San Sebas-tian. With ten rookies in tow, coach TopexRobinson puts his chips behind the young andhungry core of the Golden Stags.

Were only formed three months before theseason started, and the players are still tryingto embrace the system and their roles, saidRobinson. The team is trying to sharpen itssaw and were happy with where we are rightnow. Were still improving.

Pressure has been placed on their up-and-coming team, and a part of it is levied on the19-year-old Jaymar Perez.

The 6-foot-1 combo guard has been brandedas The Beast 2.0 with his do-it-all attitudewhenever he steps on the court.
