FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2011 5F EATURES A cyber love affair

have not made mebelieve that there wassomething to hopefor. He should havenever said “I love

you”. I felt betrayedand defeated. Pleasehelp me Joe. I needto move on.

Sincerely yours,Nicole

  DEAR Nicole,There could come a

time when we will fi-nally meet someonewho will sweep us off our feet and make us

strong enough to facethe challenge of love. The internet chat roomhas opened a totally new opportunity for usto meet all kinds of

people from all walksof life and distant

 places. I have already

read about a lot of cy-ber love affairs - someof them fruitfully blos-

  som into meaningfuland lasting relation-

ships but far too many  still end in tragedy.

Even if we can vir-tually know a person

from a distance, I stillbelieve that nothingcompares to the old

  fashioned “getting toknow each other

stage” where we can  share moments togeth-er in reality and not ina world inside a smallcomputer screen. Nev-ertheless, the chatroom is an interesting

venue to explore the  possibilities of havingreal relationships.

Nicole, there are in-deed things that mon-ey can’t buy. Love, for

instance, doesn’t have

a price tag. We cannotbuy love but only earnit. But not all thosewho save up for a rela-tionship get what they expect. Charleswouldn’t have spent somuch time and money on his phone calls if hewasn’t interested in

you. He wouldn’t have  visited you and your family if he wasn’t sin-cere with his inten-

tions. But one’s inter-est and sincerity doesn’t necessarily sumup to a commitment.

He was flat honestwith you when he saidhe’s not ready for acommitment. The rea-

sons that followed, as you knew, were proba-bly only half true.

Nicole, Charlestried to send you sig-

nals that meant hewasn’t romantically interested in you any-more. You just were

probably toolovestruck to have no-ticed it. Sometimes, when we are over-whelmed with this fas-cination for a person,we miss out on mak-ing a reality check. Webecome very optimistic

and less objective tothe point of expectingmore than what is ac-tually given to us.

Nicole, it is truethat our greatest fail-ure could be our fearof trying. You may nothave had what youwanted with Charleseven if you showedhim how much hemeant to you. But itwas better than not

having tried loving

DEAR Joe,Just call me Nicole. I am 26 years old

and currently have my own cybercafebusiness. Joe, my parents have alwaysprovided me with the best things inlife but I don’t have someone specialto share them with. I am a latebloomer and while men find me at-tractive, I haven’t met someone whocan sweep me off my feet and makeme fall in love.

Being inthe internetbusiness, I oc-

casionally vis-ited chatrooms just tokill time. Theidea of find-ing someonein the net really amazed me. This ishow I met Charles

who was based in theUS. Our initial chatsbecame everyday phone calls andemails and I slowly

found myself fallingfor him. He men-tioned about visitingManila soon whichmade me very excitedand happy. I justcouldn’t wait to seehim for real. Ourchatmates who knewhim warned me of hisreputation in the net, that I shouldn’t takehim too seriously be-

cause I’m bound toget hurt. I was willingto take that risk. Afterall the greatest failureis in not trying so Imight as well do it.

Charles kept hispromise, came to ourhouse and met my family. That was thehappiest moment inmy life. He was defi-nitely worth the wait

but he had to go back to the States. I was willing to make majorsacrifices for this rela-tionship to work, buthe told me he wasnot ready to commit. The pain from hispast still haunted himand he needed timeto fix his life. I hardly knew Charles whichmade my family un-easy but they werestill very supportive.

Before he left, Charlesasked me to wait forhim, said he loved meand then kissed mefor the last time. It

was so sad Joe andfor some reason I feltscared. This is one of those things I’ve al-

ways wanted but wasn’t sure to get. My fear of us coming toan end happened.

When my parentsasked me join themfor a vacation in theStates, I calledCharles who didn’tsound too happy about my coming.Nevertheless, we hadtime to meet even for

just a day. I soonfound out there wasanother girl. Charlestried to explain but Ididn’t give him thechance. Joe, no onehad hurt me as muchas Charles did. I de-cided to put an end tothis nonsense.

That was two years ago. He tried tocall me a couple of

times but I got tiredof his excuses andlies. He sent meemails but I opted notto respond until he fi-nally stopped. It stillhurts me, Joe, andthere has been no oneafter him. He washonest to tell me thathe was not ready tocommit but he shouldhave told me the realreason. He should

him at all. Love makesno promises. It has no  guarantees and it is good only while itlasts. When lovebreaks away from us

we should not be re-morseful or bitter. We

 just have to be thank-

ful that we were giventhe opportunity tomarvel its greatness. When we lose someone

we love, it is not neces-  sarily because we areundeserving. Perhaps

that person is notmeant for us or some-one else better deservesit.

Love

“Maybe he wasnervous at first. I askedhim to read it so I couldget his opinion,” kuwentoniya.

“He

wants me to grow andprove my versatility as anactress.”

“We’ve accepted that we’ll get to work withothers,” sabi ni Carla,“like the time when Geoff acted with Glaiza de Cas-tro in Grazilda.”

“I know that there willalways be good and badnews about me. I’velearned to take thingsin stride,” sabi niya.“These new chal-lenges will pushme to improve.Doing daring

roles is a step for- ward in my ca-reer.”

Sa kanyang bagongteleserye, paliwanagniya, paguusapan ang in

Wala munang show biz para kay AtashaNi Allan Policarpio

Contributor

siya, then she can decide.”

“[I told them], ‘Let’s go!We’re going to leave at seven inthe morning on Saturday.’ Thenmy daughter came up to meand said, ‘Dad, I can’t go! Ihave rehearsals at 1 p.m.’”

Hindi alam ni Aga angkanyang sasabihin. “Medyo

“Tapos, sabi ko, ‘That’sit. ’Yun na ’yun. Nomore,’” dagdag niya.

“Andres is a natural,” sabiniya. “But he’s a boy. He just

likes to play.”Kababalik lang ni

Aga mula sa isangnakakapagod na 10-

araw na biyahe mulaUnited States, kungsaan kinunan angmga unang episodeng kanyang traveland educational pro-gram na Pinoy Ex-

plorer.

Matira angmatibay!
