Ill .. HOW HAWS' WEBSITE REPORTED

UST SATURDAY'S DEBACLE

28/01/06 NINE MAN HAWS EDGE TAYPORT

The first round of the East of Scotland Cup finally took place with the Haws travelling to Tayport. The game started with a few crunching tackles as both teams looked to gain an edge. There were a few niggles and the referee was forced to blow for free kicks regularly . The referee was also happy to show cards, even for innocuous challenges, and this had a major affect on the game. Within twenty minutes, Ally Gray had received a yellow and a straight red reducing the Haws to ten. Tayport had by now taken hold of the game and kept the visitors pegged back. They took the lead when a cross from the left was headed home from the edge of the box with the Haws defence stranded. Tayport then doubled their lead when the ball was picked up on half way and the player was allowed to travel unchallenged till he reached 25 yards out where he unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top comer. The Haws still managed the odd foray up-field and the leeway was reduced when the ball fell to DARRIN WRIGHT in the box and his snapshot went in at the post. Barry Smith was show his second yellow and the Haws ended the first half with nine men . The second half saw the visitors more in · the game and they were unlucky not to draw level on a few occasions before Tayport were reduced to ten men. The hosts looked to have clinched the game when Marc Graham failed to hold a low cross and the ball was stabbed home from close range to make it 3-1 for Tayport. The Haws threw everything forward and following good work by Conrad Courts, Martyn Thomson hung a cross perfectly for TOM COURTS to head home with a minute remaining. This lifted the visitors and the home team looked all out of sorts as the Haws pressed forward. With four minutes of added on time played, the Haws got a comer which was headed home by TOM COURTS to tie the game . The game then went to penalties which saw Tom Courts, Stefan Winiarski and John Mitchell score whilst Marc Graham ~aved two ofTayport's efforts. Tayport scored their third and fourth spot kicks whilst the Haws missed their fourth, leaving Martyn Thomson to step up and score giving the Haws a 4-2 penalties win.

Final score Tayport 3 Haws 3, Haws win 4-2 on penalties .

TODAY"S GAME WHYTE & MACKAY SUPER LEAGUE

ROUND 17/22

TAYPORT v CARN OUSTIE PANMURE

Tayport have played more matches against Carnoustie Panmure than any other junior club. This afternoon's Super League meeting will be number 48. The fact that the two clubs from the opposite side of the Tay Estuary have met so often is a measure of the success both have enjoyed over the past 16 years, with regular meetings in the latter stages of cup competitions . Whilst Tayport have enjoyed pretty much continued success over this period, Carnoustie 's progess has been more of a roller coaster but the Gowfers are established back in the Super League after spending season 03/04 in the District League . There's plenty to play for here today as both the title and relegation still potentially involve all clubs with the possible exception of North End who look doomed. Both clubs have lost strikers during the window, with Panmure 's Richie Montgomery moving to Forfar Athletic and Gary Middleton moving up the coast to Montrose. Both clubs have signed players from Montrose in recent weeks. Carnoustie swooped to sign keeper Jim Butters to replace Mike Whyte who suffered a broken leg, while Tayport signed his Montrose teammate Duncan McLean. Veteran keeper Butters (pictured) was the regular keeper at Links Park, doubling up as goalie coach, but was an early victim ofEddie's cull, thus opening up an opportunity for Carnoustie to bring in an experienced last line of defence. Otherwise the Carnoustie playing pool will be familiar to Tayport fans. Even new signing, striker Jim Collier, although fixed up from Arbroath, played down here in a friendly at Christmas when on loan to Dundee Violet. Camoustie's results since the turn of the year have been good with Super League draws against Arniston and Bo'ness and cup wins over Crossgates and Pumpherston guaranteed to have boosted confidence for today's affair. Tayport will quickly have to get last week's result out of their system. Disregarding the loss of Peters and Ramsay during the game, 'Port were as tactically inept v Haws as they had been astute v Renfrew on their last Canniepairt outing. Extremely disappointing, particularly after dominating the opening 45minutes with some impressive football. It was depressingly similar to the situations at Bo'ness and Linlithgow this season. We play well until the opposition are handicapped then we lose our way against a depleted side. Lloyd Young is back from holiday and most injuries have cleared up so Robbie Henderson and Steven Stewart could come back into contention as there will undoubtedly be changes to the starting line-up. Ronnie Kenneth who netted Camoustie's first two Super League goals of the season in a 2-0 win over Hill of Beath, will be hoping he can break his Tayport duck against the side he left in December. ·

11NOJOB TOO BIG OR TOO SMAU for

MARSH and SULLIVAN-

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to both sets of supporters to the Canniepairt for today's important East Super League match against Camoustie .

Both teams will be looking to take all 3 points, but in our case we must look to open the gap at the top of the league to 7 points and put real pressure on the chasing pack to win their games in hand. We all know that points on the board count for a lot when the end of the season congestion of 3 games a week kicks in and points are dropped due to tiredness and fatigue .

Games against Carnoustie are always tight and hard fought , and we expect the same this afternoon. There is a bit of added spice due to us having a few ex-Carnoustie players in our squad, Allan Ramsay, Gus Malone and more recently Ronnie Kenneth, who has proved to be a tremendous signing for us , as his experience and physical presence is just what our young strikers need to bring the best out of them . Over the rest of the season and beyond, I think Ronnie could be a most important signing for us.

Last week against Hill of Beath was a massive disappointment for everybody associated with Tayport as we witnessed the biggest case of highway robbery since the days of Dick Turpin . We totally outplayed Beath and ended up losing a penalty shoot-out , after sur:rendering a 2-0 lead, then a 3-1 lead, only for the opposition to score twice in the final 8 minutes and leave us gutted at the result, and visibly dejected going into penalties .

Our first half performance was a pleasure to watch and the goals were just the icing on the cake, especially Duncan .McLean's 20 yard rocket which was one of the best and hardest struck shots we have all witnessed , hopefully with many more to come. The second half was more of the same with Tayport creating more chances , but only adding a Gareth Dailly strike to our goal tally , but nobody could forsee what was to follow , with two hopeful balls into our box and two late goals coming from the opposition, to leave us shell-shocked and standing looking at each other in total disbelief. But that's football and we all know what happened after our shock defeat in the same cup, and at the same stage last season - we went on a run of 22 games undefeated - let's hope we can do the same this year . Only time will tell. We must get back to winning ways as soon as possible and although Carnoustie will be a very tough game, it's one that we have to win to give us a psychological boost going into next week's massive OVD Cup tie down at Arthurtie . I hope that you all enjoy the game and that we can perform as well as we did last week without the eight minutes of madness at the end.

Let's all get behind the team as your support is vital to our success .

" More East of Scotland Misery for Tayport "

says

~ Well, last Saturday's match was certainly eventful, with everyone in the Tayport camp left feeling slightly bewildered by what they had seen. Visitors Hill of Beath seemed well beaten, twice, but back they came to inflict more East of Scotland Cup misery on the hosts.

It had all started so well. With Allan Ramsay and Scott Peters bossing the middle of the park, there had been nothing to fear. Barry McNaughton ghosted into the box to head the opener and once Duncan McLean had sent a searing shot into the net on his home debut, passage into round two appeared a sure thing. Then, after the Haws had had two players ordered off, nobody would have backed them, but a lapse in concentration cost 'Port a goal, right on half-time.

That said, the Canniepairt outfit were still in command and should have turned the screw in the second half. The loss of Peters did not help, nor did the dismissal of Ramsay, although the clinching goal still came Tayport's way. Roberto Morris was the provider, racing down the wing onto a Barry McNaughton pass before crossing for Gareth Dailly to net for a second successive game and make it 3-1. Only, it wasn't the clincher. Hill ofBeath's Tam Courts refused to throw in the towel and his determination, which was not really matched , gave him two headers, both from set-pieces, and, suddenly, there was a penalty shoot-out. . Momentum had been well and truly lost and, after a few kicks, so was the tie.

With such huge fixtures on the horizon, including today's Super League affair, let's hope that the bad performance was a blip which has now been removed from the system. As for the result in itself, it was a great pity that more impact couldn't have been made in what is a fairly new competition for clubs in these parts. After all, the East of Scotland Cup is one of the oldest in junior football. Unfortunately , it hasn't quite registered on the Tayport radar yet. Who won the tournament last season? I admit to not having known the answer to that question , Linlithgow, but the lack 0f interest is probably linked to Tayport's lack of progress. Five months down the line, however, there are two questions we'll all know the answer to : Who won the 2006 Super League? Who won the 2006 OVD Scottish Junior Cup? Our interest in these competitions is beyond question .

SNIFFING ABOUT THE WITH

THE SNOUT Tragedy struck Lochee Harp 's veteran defender Mike Kelly last week. The legendaryHarp player/ coach, with well over 1,000 games to his credit, came on as substitute in the East of Scotland tie v Mussel burgh but was later carried off with a broken leg.

Former Killie keeper and Stranraer manager Campbell Money bas been appointed to the manager's post at Cumnock.

Montrose failed in a bid to take Locbee United's centre half Chris Tawse to Links Park before the transfer window closes at midnight on Tuesday . Boss Ray McKinnon said "Chris is under contract until the end of the season and is a vital part of our squad. There is no way the club could consider letting him leave at such a crucial point of the season , we're in the last 16 of the Scottish Cup, in all of the local cups and still have very important Superleague fixtures to play." It's been suggested that there 's not much love lost between Lochee and their former manager. Wonder why.

Faith in the youth of today bas been restored. It may have been several degrees below zero on Monday and Wednesday evenings this week but that didn't deter 10 or so youngsters , some in T shirts, taking advantage of Tayport's training lights to have a kick-about as the Tayport players trained .

The committee thought the club had fixed up another player before this week's window closed, but it was only Lloyd , suntanned from a fortnight in the Canaries and sporting a bleached blond hairstyle .

There were many raised eyebrows when it was discovered that there were no official linesmen/assistants for the Tayport v Hill of Beath game last week. A poor state of affairs , it's got to be said. One of only two Super League clashes, and variously described in the media as the tie of the round and the match of the day, yet there were no assistants. Two ties were postponed last Saturday, at Dalkeith and Glenrothes. One must ask what greater priorities there were, that these officials were not redirected to the Canniepairt. Although be diplomatically kept his counsel, former East Region General Secretary Jock Myles , who was at The Canniepairt, nevertheless expressed great surprise that the tie had not been allocated assistants.

Elsewhere in toda y' s programme, we've listed the teams from -our first encounter with Arthurlie back in 1992. In the Arthurlie squad that day were their current manager, Frank Lynch, ex Dundee Utd, now Gretna and man of many clubs, James Grady and the guy who was to end Tayport's dreams with the late winning goal for Glenafton in the following year's final, John Millar.

The Courier described it as 'the recently introduced East of Scotland Cup'. The Fife Herald described it as 'the long established competition'. Well, The _Courier was way off the mark, by about 100 years in fact. The East of Scotland Cup bas been contested every year since 1896, not even taking a break for two world wars. Mind you, whatever way it was described , for Tayport last Saturday, the East of Scotland Cup could only have been described as a disaster!

Friday's Evening Telegraph carried a fine photo of Scotland Manager Walter Smith and SFA Chief Executive David Taylor with the Scottish Junior Cup. The photo had been taken at Hampden at the midweek 5th round draw.

The same day the Scottish Junior Cup appeared in another newspaper photo, this time in the Fife Herald, taken at the Tayport Arms in the company of Dave Nicoll and John Gahagan, speakers at the Tayport FC Footballers' Supper. Anybody wandering down Castle Street in Tayport last week end might have caught yet another sighting of the grand old trophy, this time in the Post Office window. The Cup sure gets around!

The most off the mark East of Scotland Cup match preview surely belonged to the Perthshire Advertiser. Said the PA, "Bankfoot must feel they have a very good chance of progressing to round 2 at the expense of Steelend Vies, as the Fife club are having a quite horrendous season. They have played 9 league games and 4 league cup games and haven't earned as much as a point." Result? Bankies O Steelend 6. Guess the Bankies lads must have read the paper and were perhaps a trifle complacent!

The Fife Herald, as well as reporting the Arniston game and previewing the Hill of Beath tie, reported the OVD Cup draw and recalled the previous three meetings between the sides, the most recent of which was 1997, when local bobby Steve Hutcbeon, now player/manager at amateurs Cupar Hearts, nabbed a brace to send Tayport into the final.

The Sunday Mail bad a pie of Gareth Dailly congratulating Duncan McLean on his first goal for 'Port and a concise report of the Hill of Beath game plus a selection of other Junior reports from across the country.

Monday's Sun had Hill of Beath manager Jock Finlayson hailing his heroes whose 'gritty comeback saved his side from a third straight cup KO ......• We dug deep and battled back at one of the toughest places to go'. The Sun, however, gave Barry's goal to Ronnie Kenneth.

The Edinburgh Evening News had a two page spread for their match of the day, Whitburn v Dundee North End, for whom Jim Henry made his first start since his move from the Canniepairt. Also on from the start were Robert Smith and Kevin Don, reinstated from Montrose. Smith, in fact, was the subject of a fine colour action shot which illustrated the match report. Burnies' manager Derek Strickland was a happy man. His team had the Dokens on the rack from the start and he reckoned his team's ' display was a return to the football we played before the winter break and I think our slump is over'.
