A Message from our CEO, Carolyn Winslow:

Hi, my friends, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Butler County had an awesome time celebrating our 50th Anniversary in2018. I have been at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Butler County for nearly 33 of those years. When I writethat out it seems like so very long. But when I think about it, it doesn’t feel that way. There are alwaysnew things going on, new matches, new Board Members, new staff, new “hot button” issues and justnew experiences. 2018 was full of all of these! I had the pleasure and honor of serving nationally on theMarketing Task Force to reimagine our “brand”.  This was a really challenging yet really funexperience. It was so fascinating to work with a professional, national marketing firm and be a part ofthe behind the scenes process.

One of the new things we did in 2018 was to host our first ever, truly spectacular gala – “The BIGEVENT”!  It was simply the best. We held it at the old downtown Middletown Barnitz Bank (now theWindamere) with a 1920’s-30’s Speakeasy theme.   It was so much fun to see so many folks “puttin’ onthe Ritz”.  There were lots of long pearls, jazzy suits with slicked back hair and even some bank robberstrying to rob the real live vault.  It was so much fun that we decided that we will host a BIG EVENTevery fall with a different theme each time.  Join us at our Night Carnival in 2019! We had many people make more than generous donations in honor of our 50th Anniversary.  Likemany non-profits we are always in need of funds.  When someone realizes this, we are ever so grateful. I always want people to know that we guard their gifts with great care and make sure that every pennyis spent only to increase the quantity and quality of our mentoring services. Thank you to all of you reading this who are defending the potential of the young people of ButlerCounty. If you are volunteering as a mentor – thank you. If you have donated to us – you’re the best.  Ifyou have participated in our Run4Kids, gotten a great carwash at Mike’s Carwash or came to the BIGEVENT – I hope you had a roaring good time. If you are a volunteer Board Member – I love workingwith you. You have all had my gratitude for 33 years and will continue to have it for at least a few more.

We have welcomed several new Staff and Board Members thispast year. We also bid farewell to people. One such person wasone of our Board Members, Jeff Smith, who passed away far tooearly. I consider myself lucky to have met him and to count him asa friend. He was super smart, very kind and always smiling. Hecontinues to be missed here, at Miami University, and at home.

Our New Look

After extensive market research and input from Big Brothers Big Sisters staff andstakeholders nationwide, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America unveiled a new logo andbranding in the fall of 2018. The new look is modern, bold, and confident, and it was designedspecifically to appeal to minority men. BBBS chapters (including BBBS of Butler County) nowuse the new branding to achieve greater relevance, visibility and consistency of the BBBSidentity throughout the country.

Our Focus: Potential

All children possess potential. It's up to us to defend it, to inspire it, to ignite and empower it.That's what we do and what we stand for. Together, we are defenders of potential was identified asthe national core belief and the best representation of the evolution of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

"I was introduced to BBBS when my son Michael was in the 4th grade. He was matched with Mike, aMiami student from Chicago who had similarinterests.  Mike was a great influence on Michael as amentor, true Big Brother, musician and overall greatstudent.  The two of them worked on writing music, playing the piano, shooting hoops and playingtennis. As a single parent it was important to me thatMichael have a mentor and adult other than me tohang out with and to talk to.  Mike and Michael werethe perfect match.  Mike is now a father of 2 andMichael is now an Engineer - they still stay in touch. Their match was such a success I decided to join theBoard of BBBS and 6 years later am proud to say Inow am a Big Sister to a 10 year old. BBBS is a great place for young, old, and everyone inbetween; it is truly a place where Life ChangingFriendships Start!"

"I first got involved with BBBS of Butler County shortly after graduating from school30+ years ago.  In BBBS I found an efficient, well run organization with a simplemission - helping at risk kids through volunteer mentoring programs.  The concept iseffective.  Be there for them.  Listen.  Be a sounding board.  A friend.  BBBS provides theprofessional support.

What better way to make an impact on a child’s life... And yours...

I encourage anyone wanting to make a positive contribution in their local communityto consider BBBS.  They have grown over the years, but their mission is as importantas ever.  Whether you can spare some time, or some money, you will find a caring, dedicated team and a great return on your investment.

We hosted our first-ever gala in 2018 and it was such a success, we decided to host an event each yearwith a different theme and call it "The Big Event." The gala was an uproariously fun, 1920s-inspiredevent that featured cigar rollers, cheating at cards, safe deposit boxes full of raffle prizes, and dinnerwith a backdrop of prohibition-era band music.
