Together We Make a DifferenceANNUAL REPORT 2018

Friends of St. Vincent Healthcare:

Your support allows us to provide meaningful and life changing support for patients and families of St. Vincent Healthcare. We are honored to be included in your charitable giving, and your support helps to continue the ministry of our founding sisters that started in 1898. We will continue to provide exceptional care and honor our mission by improving the health of the people and communities we serve, especially those who are poor and vulnerable.

Through your generosity in 2018, we accomplished many things that will allow our Foundation to provide blessings to those receiving care through St. Vincent Healthcare. Your support of our Spiritual Care Program, Women’s Services Campaign,

pediatric initiatives, and other focused giving allows us to continue the legacy of our Sisters of Charity for years to come. Our updated Mobile Mammography Coach will provide

screenings to many women around our region, especially those in rural areas that may not otherwise have access.

Looking forward to 2019, we will continue to ease the way for our oncology patients by endowing funds for our Meadowlark House, which provides free patient lodging for our rural cancer patients. Providing this amenity is one way that we can alleviate some of the fear and cost in treating a cancer diagnosis. Cancer is personal to all of us, and we hope you will join us in making the diagnosis a little less burdensome for many.

Sincerely,

St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation Team

When our Foundation team is out in the community, we often hear things like, “For such a small community, Billings really supports non-profits.” Or, “I have lived in many places around the country, but this community rallies around one another!” We concur Billings, we concur! Yet again, our community rallied around our Women’s Services Campaign in 2018. In one year, over $2,000,000 was raised that will directly impact women and their healthcare needs. If you missed the December 2018 news feature, our new “Pink Beast” was highlighted as the only traveling mammography coach in the region, screening over 3,500 women each year who cannot afford or do not have access to mammogram testing. This brand new mammography coach has state-of-the-art technology and was fully funded by your philanthropic dollars to the tune of $1,000,000!

How many of us have been personally affected by the horrific disease…cancer? We would bet that most of us, unfortunately, could raise our hands. The St. Vincent Healthcare Frontier Cancer Center treats 2,000 rural patients each year, providing our patients with advanced and collaborative treatment options.

2019 CAMPAIGN:

CAMPAIGN UPDATE:

Women’s Services

Due to the rural nature of our beautiful state, treatment becomes a burden for those patients traveling to Billings to receive their care. Most cancer treatments are a daily ritual for extended periods of times and it becomes a burden for folks who live outside of town.

purchase a gently used four-wheel drive SUV for the Midwifery group at St. Vincent Healthcare. They are now able to safely and efficiently drive to our outlying reservations, providing prenatal care to mothers who otherwise may not have access to care. Lastly, planning for the enhancements to our Labor and Delivery floor has commenced! The remaining philanthropic dollars from this campaign will assist in creating a state-of-the-art, family friendly facility to match the exceptional care already being delivered at St. Vincent Healthcare. New whirlpools, birthing balls, support partner beds and WiFi entertainment options are just a few of the upgrades we will provide to families as they embark on the greatest journey of their lives…parenthood!

We have a solution for these patients and their families to alleviate the stress. Our Meadowlark Houses provide four units of complimentary lodging to cancer patients receiving treatment, four or more days a week, for several weeks. In 2018, the four units provided a refuge to more than 35 families during their healthcare challenges. In 2019, the St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation will embark on a $1,000,000 Meadowlark House Campaign to create an endowment to fund the annual operational costs of the Meadowlark Houses. Our goal is to keep these sacred homes available to our patients and families for generations to come…or until cancer is no longer a worry.

Dr. Bill and Merilyn Ballard have pledged $100,000 to endow the Dr. Bill and Merilyn Ballard Music Therapy Endowment. Bill Ballard is well known for his business savvy and generosity to the Billings community. Is gratitude good for your health? You bet it is! Studies show that folks who express gratitude on a daily basis are happier, have more energy and are, in general, more physically healthy as well. The St. Vincent Healthcare staff (doctors, nurses, house-keeping, volunteers, etc.) strive each and every day to make the lives of our patients and families better. Oftentimes when these amazing individuals are thanked, they reply with, “It’s okay, it’s my job!” The St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation has sought out to become the repository of gratitude and pass that along to these exceptional caregivers! We know that our patients and families want to thank their caregivers for the exceptional care they have received. We also know that it’s important for the caregivers to receive the “thanks” with an open heart to continue to be exceptional in the healthcare world. If you or a loved one would like to honor anyone who has made a difference during your healthcare challenges, please reach out to us at the St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation! We are happy and willing to broker gratefulness in our community!

For more information on how to express your gratefulness, go to www.svfoundation.org and click on “How to Give.” Or, contact theFoundation at 406-237-3600.

BENEFITING THE COMMUNITY: Bill and Mary Underriner Honored Saints 2018

Bill and Mary Underriner’s impact on our community through philanthropic and professional leadership has helped shape many services of St. Vincent Healthcare and touched many lives through various other nonprofits. The Underriners are specifically interested in childhood health, education and nurturing lifestyles. Bill and Mary state, “We believe that every child should have the opportunity to quality education and health care.” Both Bill and Mary understand personally and intimately what it means for a family to struggle with critical health issues. The Underriners credit St. Vincent Healthcare as playing a vital role in the health of their family; specifically their children. Mary explains, “When our son was very sick, St. Vincent doctors, nurses and staff led us to the resources necessary to save his life.” Bill and Mary are the owners of

Underriner Motors in Billings, and provide their leadership and guidance by serving on boards and volunteering with multiple associations and nonprofits throughout our

community. A few of these include St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation, United Way, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Rocky Mountain College, and Alberta Bair Theatre. Bill and Mary were recently selected as the Billings Chamber of Commerce 2018 Legacy Honorees, and Mary was a Salute to Women Honoree. Known for their humble, gracious and generous lifestyle, Bill and Mary are quick to recognize the generosity of others. St. Vincent Healthcare was honored to celebrate and welcome Bill and Mary into our family of Honored SAINTS at Labor of Love – SAINTS 2018.

The labor and delivery unit holds a very special place in the hearts of Jody and Cyndy Desin, as each of their six children entered the world at St. Vincent Healthcare.   From the moment their first child was born, the Desins have centered their lives on family. Today, with grown children and eight grand-children, time spent with family remains their primary focus. They have shown a tremendous amount of support and care for their children and grandchildren in sports, academics, and all other aspects of their lives. Jody and Cyndy have shown that same level of support for

Billings’ non-profits. They have found their purpose and identity through showing generosity toward their loved ones and

throughout the community.   Jody and Cyndy are honored that their contributions to St. Vincent Healthcare will help to provide a safe, caring and comfortable environment where so many can experience the miracle of childbirth. Their hope is that all who experience this unit will be touched by God and able to experience the love, excitement, and adventure that each new life brings to a family.

FEATURED VOLUNTEER: Lorraine Yates

What do Tai Chi, a good friend and inspiring conversation ignite? Well, when they all “come together” on the same day, Lorraine Yates will tell you they ignited her interest in volunteering at St. Vincent Healthcare. But, we will get to that later... Growing up on a farm in rural Stanton, North Dakota, one could say Lorraine Yates began working by the time she could walk. Farm life was a good life growing up; however, at the age of 20, Lorraine decided it was time to move to the city to find work off of the farm. Moving to Billings, Montana, Lorraine quickly found

work doing bookkeeping for an oil service company. She enjoyed her work and by the time she left the company to raise her two children, she had worked her way up to executive secretary. Lorraine loved being able to be home to raise her son and daughter. This time with her children became tremendously important when her husband died suddenly at the young age of 41. It was extremely hard on her and her young children. However, they pulled together as a family. Their strength and perseverance

have led to successful careers for both of Lorraine’s children. Lorraine loved being a mother; however, there is a special twinkle in her eyes when she talks about how “proud” she is of her two grandsons. Her oldest grandson Trevor (24) was recently honorably discharged from the army after five years of service. Her other grandson Logan (21) is serving his second year in the Marines. She stated, “Watching them grow up was the light of my life.” Now that her children and grandsons

are grown, Lorraine stated she “wanted to stay occupied.” At Tai Chi class, when her friend told her about how much she enjoys volunteering at St. Vincent Healthcare, Lorraine’s interest was ignited. She immediately contacted Brenda Nagel, volunteer coordinator, and the rest is history. For the last four years, every Monday afternoon, Lorraine is the friendly face behind the mobile coffee/treat cart, the Cherry Nook Express. Lorraine describes it as the “highlight of my week. It gets my week off to a great start.” The people she meets during her time serving coffee, tea, cookies and other treats to hospital patients and visitors makes her time very rewarding. “People are happy to see me. It often lightens up their day a little bit,” states Lorraine. Not letting any grass grow under her feet, when Lorraine isn’t volunteering, she can be found at the gym three to four times a week, knitting a few times a month with her friends, engaging in church programs or curled up with a new book selected by her book club. We are very blessed to have Lorraine as part of our St. Vincent Healthcare Family.

FEATURED PROVIDER: Dr. Patrick Cobb Taking Care of the Nicest People on the Planet

By spending just a few minutes with Dr. Patrick Cobb, Hematology & Oncology Specialist for the St. Vincent Healthcare Frontier Cancer Center, it won’t be long before you are mirroring his megawatt smile and admiring his sunny outlook on life. A Louisiana native, Dr. Cobb was raised by his schoolteacher parents who always instilled great values. Spending time in the Army, attending Tulane Medical School and completing his residency in Denver, Colorado, Dr. Cobb always held a special place in his heart for the western states. It was in the dead of winter while working in San Antonio, that he would receive a call from a recruiter to come to Billings, Montana. “The first thing I asked was whether or not I had to plug in my car during the wintertime up there,” Dr. Cobb recalls as he smiles. “The recruiter was persistent, and I needed some frequent flyer miles, so what did I have to lose?” While he had no intention of moving to Billings, Dr. Cobb would quickly rekindle his love for the west and realize the excellent opportunity and top quality physicians that Billings had to offer. In addition to this, everyone he encountered

Frontier Cancer Center to the dedicated staff that includes nurses, lab, billing, front desk and so many more. Dr. Cobb was elated to learn that the 2019 campaign for the St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation would focus on endowing the Meadowlark House. “Providing free patient lodging for rural patients receiving treatment creates a tremendous sense of relief in these patients. It’s difficult enough to be diagnosed with cancer, but when it is paired with financial burden, and other concerns about one’s family and transportation…it can be overwhelming. The Meadowlark House is one of many tools that we have to make the load a little lighter.” When Dr. Cobb is not practicing medicine and taking care of the nicest people on the planet, he is enjoying life to the fullest. He and his wife Carla love to travel to tropical places and enjoy scuba diving or glamping in the Big Horn Mountains. A self-proclaimed fine arts enthusiast, he can carry quite the tune and his specialty is Cajun cooking; a skill passed down to him by his mother and grandmother. As for us at St. Vincent Healthcare, we all feel fortunate that Dr. Cobb was in need of a few airline miles so many years ago!

It’s difficult enough to be diagnosed with cancer, but when it is paired with financial burden, and other concerns about one’s family and transportation…it can be overwhelming. The Meadowlark House is one of many tools that we have to make the load a little lighter.”

during his visit to Billings was so nice! “Montanans were and continue to be the happiest and the nicest people on the planet.” All of us at St. Vincent Healthcare and the Frontier Cancer Center are thankful for the persistence of the HR department in bringing Dr. Cobb to Billings. Throughout his career, he has taken care of many patients and helped guide the decision-making process of those facing a cancer diagnosis. “Most think that my job is sad and devastating. In reality, most patients that walk into the cancer center are able to receive treatment, and walk right back

It only takes a few minutes talking with Jeanne Nitz to learn about one of her favorite subjects; her husband, Larry Nitz. The couple met in 1954 while attending the University of Montana pursuing their love of music. Jeanne graduated with a bachelor’s in Music Education and Larry with a bachelor’s in Arts with a major in Music. Upon graduation in 1958, Larry was commissioned in the Air Force. However, even as a decorated rescue helicopter pilot, Larry always had a love for music. “His avenue was music. He hauled his guitar everywhere,” Jeanne shared. “He even found a way to take it to Vietnam. Larry would play for his guys when they would come in from a horrible mission. He would gather them around and play songs. He even played for the injured soldiers. He loved playing to make others feel better.” Larry retired from the Air Force after a 25-year decorated military career, ending with a three-year assignment at the Pentagon. Larry and Jeanne were ready to get back to their “roots.” As Jeanne explains, “We would have moved anywhere in the Northwest.” It seemed like divine intervention when shortly after Larry’s military retirement, they learned of an opening for a pilot in Billings, Montana. The family of five jumped at the opportunity to return home. Soon after returning, Larry not only began working as a private pilot for a developer; but also, for the developer’s son in property management. Eventually, forming his own property management company, Executive Property Services. In 1993, Larry was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Of course, being the kind and caring man that he was, Larry never “missed a beat.” It didn’t surprise Jeanne when he came to her one day, in the midst of his own journey with cancer, upset at the hardships many rural patients had to go through to receive treatment. Many of these rural patients were actually living in

Meadowlark House opened. Jeanne shared, “Larry sang in the Messiah Festival in December 2001. A few months later he was gone. He was passionate about his “dream” until the end.” Although Larry was well-known in the community as a successful businessman and civic volunteer, his true legacy will continue through the lives he touched. Jeanne and her children continue to carry forward Larry’s amazing legacy. Immediately after Larry’s passing, Jeanne and children Cheryl, Linda and Steve started the Larry Nitz Endowment for the Healing Arts, benefiting

the enhancement of the healing arts at St. Vincent Healthcare. To date, funds from the endowment have helped support a music therapist at St. Vincent Healthcare and purchase Pacifier Activated Lullaby (PAL) devices which use musical movements that encourage/teach NICU babies to suck, and ultimately feed. “Larry would just be beyond excited to know how music is being used to enhance healing in even the tiniest patients. He loved music and making others feel better,” Jeanne beamed. Jeanne and her children also continue their support of Meadowlark House. In fact, Steve continues to “carry on his dad’s dream” by donating property management services of Meadowlark House through Executive Property Services. Steve was also a decorated pilot in the Air Force. When his father fell ill, he gave up a promotion and retired from the military so he could return to Billings to spend time and work with his father. St. Vincent Healthcare is grateful for the Nitz family’s generosity and for their steadfast support which benefits the health and well-being of the patients at St. Vincent Healthcare. Throughout their journey, the family has made giving back an integral part of what they do.

their cars because it was too far for them to return home daily and they couldn’t afford to pay for a motel. Larry decided he needed to do something to help. His dream/idea was for a place cancer patients could stay for free while they were receiving treatment. “Larry always had an idea,” Jeanne giggled. “He was an idea man that made his ideas happen.” Diving in headfirst, Larry approached his church choir director, Dave Reynolds, about a musical fundraiser in which he sang a performing role, the Messiah Festival. A year later, the first Messiah Festival to benefit housing for cancer patients was performed. In 2003, with funds from the Messiah Festival and an amazing donation of two duplexes by Kathryn and Preston Maynard, Meadowlark House cancer patient housing was born. To this day, Meadowlark House, through St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation, continues to provide a “home away from home” for numerous cancer patients, who not only face a challenging cancer diagnosis, but also the daunting prospect of traveling hundreds of miles to undergo treatment. Unfortunately, Larry never got to witness his “idea” come to fruition. He lost his hard-fought battle with cancer in February 2002, the year before

A “Home Away from Home” for Cancer PatientsHealthcare Foundation. Meadowlark House provides free lodging to cancer patients receiving treatment four or more days a week for several weeks. By providing this free lodging, we hope to alleviate the added stress that the financial burden of cancer and its treatment often brings. Guests of Meadowlark House must be currently receiving cancer treatment from a licensed physician or treatment center in Billings. A referral is necessary, and must be made by a doctor, nurse, social worker, or other healthcare worker. Because patient needs change daily, it is difficult to reserve a Meadowlark House unit far in advance; but every effort is made to accommodate the varying needs of patients. Meadowlark House was funded by the proceeds from the annual Messiah Festival

Meadowlark House (two duplexes), located at 24–30 30th Street West in Billings, Montana, is a residence for out-of-town patients receiving cancer care in Billings. The houses were donated by Kathryn and Preston Maynard in 2002, to be used for cancer patient lodging. The duplexes are managed by St. Vincent

“A home away from home” is how many describe the Meadowlark House. Providing free housing for patients diagnosed with cancer, the Meadowlark House is a blessing to all who stay, and lifts the burden that this diagnosis can have on patients and all who love them. Richard Durrschmidt is one of those patients who had the opportunity to stay at the Meadowlark House. His story is one that no one wants to experience, but one of gratitude that should be shared. Richard was born in New York, where he lived his first 18 years. Richard later found himself in California in a bit of a hard place in life after becoming homeless. His family loving him unconditionally, decided to take him under their wing and work to bring him back to the Richard they knew and loved. Richard would move to Hamilton Montana where he spent time in a treatment center in 2008. Richard put his life back together again, and with the help of his family, he then moved to Miles City, Montana where he started work with the Railroad. He advanced his way into a foreman position and was doing very well. After an accident and his inability to continue working with the railroad, his love for art led him to opening his own business. Richard’s love for art goes back to his childhood. His mother was a fashion designer in New

York City and is still alive at the age of 97. Her journey with breast cancer was one of many struggles the family would face. As an owner now of his own sign business in Miles City, things were going well, until one day he developed a bad toothache. Richard was certain it was an abscessed tooth. The decision to go to the dentist changed his life in a moment. He was diagnosed with oral cancer. “How does that happen?” he asks. “You go into the dentist with a toothache and are told you have cancer.” Richard spent three to

four months in treatment in Missoula and a few months after that with family going through rehabilitation. In 2018 while at a family wedding, Richard was feeling ill. Thinking he had indigestion and heartburn, he put it aside. After a doctor’s visit, he would learn that cancer had returned, and this time it was esophageal. This diagnosis brought him to Billings after visiting his physician in Miles City. Not knowing what he was going to do or where he was going to stay while receiving treatment in Billings, he learned that he would endure three straight months of daily treatment. He was told about the Meadowlark House and was relieved to have this resource. Richard said, “If it wasn’t for the Meadowlark House,I would have chosen to forgo treatment this time.” Financially, it would have been too much to handle. Richard was surprised to learn that he would have the unit to himself as he was expecting to have a roommate. Like so many that have been our guests at Meadowlark House, it is a blessing that only makes the diagnoses of cancer less stressful. With your generous donations to Meadowlark House, we are able to continue this much needed service to our patients and their families going through one of the most trying times of their lives.

$1,406,331 Grant HighlightsSt. Vincent Healthcare Foundation was the recipient of a generous, two-year grant from the Montana Healthcare Foundation and a multi-year grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration. This grant will add behavioral health services in our primary care clinics in and around Billings and in the rural communities served by St. Vincent. With grant funding, we are actively increasing Montanans’ access to behavioral health services, helping us provide the whole-person care that

Mission Fund 2018 St. Vincent Healthcare works in collaboration with community health partners to survey and respond to identified needs in order to improve the health of the community. Hospital Mission Fund dollars were directed to the following health partners in 2018.

our communities deserve. The grant has funded counselors and therapists and has expanded our virtual health services so patients can access integrated care in the comfort of their own communities.

Generous grant funding from The Hearst Foundation and the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust allowed St. Vincent Healthcare to unveil a new, state-of-the-art, mobile mammography coach with 3D imaging technology to serve women within a 300 mile radius of Billings.

GET ON BOARD 3D MOBILE MAMMOGRAPHY

Serving Rural and Underserved Women One in every eight women will learn she has breast cancer at some time in her life. Cancer remains the second-leading cause of death in Montana, with survival rates among minorities (particularly American Indian and Hispanic populations) falling even lower, due largely to late-stage diagnosis. Mobile mammography programs are a proven strategy to remove barriers to screening by making it faster and more convenient for women in rural Montana to have a screening mammogram, the key to lifesaving early detection of breast cancer. There are only two mobile mammography programs in Montana. These units are operated by St. Vincent Healthcare serving the eastern part of the state and a Kalispell hospital in the northwest side of the state. Since its inception in 2010, the St. Vincent Healthcare Mobile Mammography program has provided free and low-cost mammography screenings to

over 14,057 women, many who otherwise would not have the opportunity to be screened. Our Mobile Mammography Program particularly focuses on increasing the number of first time and routine screenings to underserved women within a 300 mile radius of Billings, addressing barriers to preventative care (lack of transportation, cost of travel and screening, fear, inconvenient clinic hours) by bringing this service to their own

communities where these services do not exist. Few rural healthcare facilities are able to provide such services as this technology and expertise is expensive to maintain.

Imaging Technology and Mobile Unit Update With generous grant funding from The Hearst Foundation and the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, St. Vincent Healthcare was able to unveil a new, state-of-the-art, mobile mammography coach with 3D imaging technology. The mobile mammography coach is the latest investment by SCL Health to meet the growing demand for this service, as well as continue to support and share our ministry and improve access to care in rural and distant communities that have no other access to breast health care. The mobile mammography coach is on the road five to seven days a week, traveling to over 60 partnering sites in a 300-mile radius around Billings, including the Crow and Northern Cheyenne reservations.

For information on giving to the Mobile Mammography program, please contact the Foundation directly at 406-237-3600.

The Eva Project provides mammograms for women over the age of 40 who are uninsured or underinsured. Mammograms can save lives. Getting a baseline mammogram in your forties can help provide ongoing monitoring and help detect breast cancer in its early stages, which in turn can make it a very treatable disease. The Eva Project is a philanthropic initiative of St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation and operates only on funds raised for the program.• The mobile mammography bus

travels up to a 300 mile radius of the Billings area and includes many rural communities and reservations. It serves many rural communities throughout the state of Montana.

• Eva Grams can be performed on the mobile mammography bus and at the Yellowstone Breast Center at any time

of the year.

Caring Spirit Campaign 2018 At St. Vincent Healthcare, one of our core values is Caring Spirit – we honor the sacred dignity of each person. With that sentiment in mind, each year we invite our associates to participate in donating their hard earned dollars to continue the legacy of honoring others in the communities we serve. Associates select a cause that is meaningful to them and on behalf of those individuals, the St. Vincent Foundation uses those dollars to make an impact on our patients, our communities, other non-profit organizations, and indeed even their fellow associates. Associates can choose any fund or endowment that is housed at the St. Vincent Foundation, but our most popular Caring Spirit funds are:Patient Compassion – Patients are provided with funds to help with expenses not covered by insurance.Associate Assistance – Helping associates in need during a crisis event.Community and Children’s – Supporting area non-profits with monetary gifts.Rural Options – Each rural care site chooses an area non-profit to support with a monetary gift, keeping donated dollars local.

Community Impact The 2019 Caring Spirit Campaign kicked off in August and wrapped up in mid-October. We increased our associate participation by 10% over the 2018 Campaign and our total dollars raised was almost $320,000! In 2018, 57 associates received financial help from the Associate Assistance fund for a total impact of $50,305.20. It is especially heartwarming to know that our associates are taken care of by their peers during major, life changing events. We saw a noticeable increase in Patient Compassion requests in 2018 and through the Caring Spirit Campaign, the St. Vincent Foundation was able to support our patients in need with a little over $60,000. The funds used to help our

patients are spent in various ways including:• Cab fare, bus passes and gas cards• Medical equipment not covered by insurance• Hotel room for loved ones• Meal vouchers

A number of local area non-profits also benefitted from our generous employees for a total impact of $14,000 and our rural clinics in Hardin, Cody, Red Lodge, Absarokee and Laurel supported their communities with more than $13,000 combined! Working with our associates on this endeavor is truly life changing. Witnessing firsthand the effect of these dollars is such a blessing for the associates and our Foundation staff. Whether the gift is $10 or $2,000, the impact for the recipient is often life changing.
