A 38-year-old San Antonio native, Mayor Julián Castro is the
youngest mayor of a Top 50 American city. First elected on May
9, 2009, Mayor Castro handily won re-election for a third term
in 2013.
Throughout his tenure, Mayor Castro has focused on attracting well-paying jobs in
21st century industries, positioning San Antonio to be a leader in the New Energy
Economy and raising educational attainment across the spectrum. In 2011, the Milken
Institute ranked San Antonio the nation’s top-performing local economy.
Mayor Castro created SA2020, a community-wide visioning effort turned nonprofit
that has galvanized thousands of San Antonians around a simple, powerful vision for
San Antonio—to create a brainpower community that is the liveliest city in the nation.
Under his leadership, the city in 2010 opened Café College, a one-stop center
offering high-quality guidance on college admissions, financial aid and standardized
test preparation to any student in the San Antonio area. In its first year, Café College
served more than 5,000 area students, spurring an expansion of the facility in 2011.
In November 2012, Mayor Castro led a voter-approved public referendum that will
expand high-quality Pre-K services to more than 22,000 San Antonio four-year-olds
over the next eight years.
In March 2010, Mayor Castro joined executives from Google and Twitter in being
named to the World Economic Forum’s list of Young Global Leaders. Later that year,
Time magazine placed him on its “40 under 40” list of rising stars in American politics.
Mayor Castro earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University with honors
and distinction in 1996 and a juris doctorate from Harvard Law School in 2000. In
2001, at the age of 26, Castro became the youngest elected city councilman at that
time in San Antonio history.

Leading by Example
Carmen Heredia-Lopez, CFACIO | CHICAGO TEACHERS PENSION FUND
TOIGO ALUMNA | CHICAGO-BOOTH 1997
MAYOR OF THE CITY OF SAN ANTONIO
The Honorable Julián Castro
TODAY. I am proud to be someone who has had a front seat to witness the
growth and economic integration of emerging and frontier markets while
living and working in Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and Latin
America. My work accelerates access to global capital markets as far into
developing economy countries as possible through research, investment,
and knowledge dissemination.
TOMORROW. I hope to influence large capital pools to more closely reflect
the geographies responsible for global economic growth and investment
returns. Capital markets, both private and public, are the most critical
platforms for global economic development and I would like to give back by
improving employment opportunities for people living in poverty through
the job creation that comes from investing in growing enterprises.
TOIGO. Toigo has consistently broadened my thinking and knowledge
through the opportunity to learn from, build a network among, and become
peers with the individuals (and firms) responsible for managing capital. Toigo
accepted me as a fellow more than a decade ago as I returned from building
businesses in Africa and Latin America. I told my interviewers that I wanted
to be part of the Toigo family, without realizing the depth of influence that
Toigo alumni would have as role models and mentors; that industry giants
would become stakeholders and promoters invested in my learning and
advancement; and, that Toigo’s staff team would work tirelessly in support
of fellows and influencing the financial services industry. I’m thankful and
grateful to be part of the Toigo family.
We relish the professional accomplishments of the 40 Under 40 being honored this evening, and we are particularly proud of all their commitment to advance the mission of the Toigo Foundation—ensuring a legacy of leadership for the generations who will follow in their footsteps.
We are delighted to highlight Debbie McCoy, who not only exemplifies all of the above qualities, but who has taken it a step further to join Toigo’s faculty of experts to deliver important industry education—infused with her dynamic facilitation style—teaching audiences of Toigo talent twice in 2013.

TODAY. My responsibilities involve directing capital to real estate
emerging managers to not only achieve attractive risk-adjusted
returns, but also to diversify the face of the industry.
TOMORROW. I would like to give back by continuing to open doors
for those coming behind me as well as for my peers by providing
access to capital and relationships.
TOIGO. My relationship with my Toigo mentor has had a profound
impact on my current career path. My mentor has provided
numerous introductions for me to senior leaders in the real estate
industry - one of which led to my current firm. Additionally, she
has provided counsel as to what specific professional experiences I
should consider targeting to position myself for a senior role in the
real estate investment management industry.
TODAY. My responsibilities involve originating new debt investments
for PNC’s portfolio of middle market corporations and managing
investments in existing portfolio companies. I leverage PNC’s
capabilities to provide M&A advisory, capital markets, asset
management services to these firms.
TOMORROW. I hope to achieve the goal of launching a private
equity fund, investing in companies that produce social returns—
an exceptional difference on society, the environment, or business
practices in an industry—while providing investors with above-
average financial returns.
TOIGO. Toigo has enabled me to develop a network of extremely
talented and accomplished finance professionals who have become
friends, mentors, and business partners. Through programs such
as APEx and alumni educational events, Toigo has enhanced my
MBA experience by providing me with additional tools, skills, and
knowledge to be more successful in my career.
TODAY. My responsibilities involve a focus on U.S. buyout
opportunities in the industrial and transportation sectors. I am
proud to have been featured as one of Black Enterprise’s 75 Most
Powerful Blacks on Wall Street in 2011.
TOMORROW. I would like to continue to give back by leveraging my
personal success to uplift my community.
TOIGO. I am proud to be affiliated with such a tremendous
organization like the Toigo Foundation—committed not only to
promoting diversity but actively helping diverse professionals to
achieve success.
TODAY. Today I am working towards becoming a well-rounded
professional who understands both the operational and investment
aspects of private equity.
TOMORROW. I envision myself as a leader who is able to execute
proven operational strategies.
TOIGO. I have an awesome job and it’s a direct result of Toigo’s ability
to seek out and form unique partnerships. Toigo understands that
finding the right opportunities for its fellows ensures long careers
and successful placements. My current position is exactly the job I
envisioned for myself but, quite frankly, never knew existed and it’s
a direct result of Toigo’s efforts. I am inspired by the people I work
for and challenged and rewarded by the work that I do. I am grateful
for the Toigo leadership who I have come to know and call friends.

TODAY. I am proud to be affiliated with several organizations that
open doors and give opportunities to thousands of people of color;
helping individuals develop into community, business and industry
leaders.
TOMORROW. I would like to give back by expanding my network in
order to continue to help, mentor, recruit corporate and community
leaders to ensure that there is a strong pipeline for the next
generation.
TOIGO. The Toigo network has been a valuable resource to me.
It is an outlet where I go and discuss key career and business
opportunities with knowledgeable and successful leaders that have
helped me make some important life impacting decisions. Toigo is
also a community and family, where my fellow alums and leaders at
the foundation provide valuable advice regarding all areas of my life
and has contributed tremendously to my path of success thus far.
TODAY. My responsibilities involve providing both asset and liability
side solutions through structured note ideas, financing and derivative
transactions respectively—primarily to financial institutions.
TOMORROW. I envision myself as a leader and a trailblazer in this
industry.
TOIGO. Toigo has often served as home-base when I’ve needed
career advice and perspective. By creating a network of driven
professionals who also care to see others succeed, Toigo has
continuously enabled my growth and development.
TODAY. Today I am proud to be representing the diaspora as one of
a handful of African Americans that have invested in the acquisition
and development of commercial real estate in the U.S., Europe, Asia,
the Middle East and Russia.
TOMORROW. I envision myself as a member of a growing collective
of senior minority financiers able to open doors across Wall Street
for a new generation of bright minorities that heretofore have been
one relationship or one timely word of advice away from getting on
and staying on Wall Street.
TOIGO. As a son of Jamaican immigrants, raised in the inner city
of Queens, I had no role models for success in finance. Naturally,
I was disadvantaged vis-a-vis my majority colleagues; many of
whom were blessed to learn the business around their dinner tables.
However, Toigo helped me close the opportunity gap by opening
the door to a wave of informal meetings with alum and executives
from sponsor firms.
TODAY. I am proud to be an entrepreneur, leading a thriving
investment advisory organization.
TOMORROW. I envision myself as a leader in my industry and in
my community—giving back to organizations like Toigo that have
helped me to achieve my success.
TOIGO. Being a part of the Toigo family has been a life-changing
experience. First off, the fellowship is the premier “stamp of
approval” for minority MBAs on Wall Street. Recruiters and top
executives know that every Fellow possesses a unique combination
of focus, excellence, drive and humility that distinguishes us from
our peers. Secondly, and most importantly, the organization
provides invaluable mentorship and networking opportunities with
key leaders (and emerging leaders) of the financial community.

TODAY. I am proud to be proving how finance and financial literacy
can build wealth and positively impact social problems such as
employment, education and health of a common people
TOMORROW. I envision myself as a leader across both finance and
Indian Country facilitating the innovation and growth of an emerging
sector in domestic sovereign wealth.
TOIGO. The Toigo affiliation has been a positive impetus to my
success by connecting me to a global community of leaders with
common values and goals. The Toigo brand lends credibility, the
Toigo network opens doors and the Toigo family helps make us
successful once we pass through those doors. Just as importantly,
we as Toigo fellows and alumni appreciate our opportunities and
know the importance of keeping those doors open for the next
generation of leaders.
TODAY. I am proud to be a board member of STEM Advantage, a
non-profit that aims to mentor, prepare and inspire young women
and underserved communities, to pursue careers in science,
technology, engineering and math (STEM).
TOMORROW. I would like to give back by serving as an advocate and
role model for my community.
TOIGO. The Robert Toigo Foundation has provided me with the
opportunity to build strong relationships with alumni in real estate,
many of whom work for the leading real estate firms. In October
2012, over twenty Toigos in real estate came together in Los Angeles
for an intimate dinner with a Toigo Board member in real estate.
TODAY. I am proud to be helping organizations navigate the global
markets, access profitable investment opportunities, and grow
their endowment capital. I am proudest that this capital supports
missions such as education, civil rights advocacy and children’s
health initiatives.
TOMORROW. I hope to achieve change by empowering institutions
with greater confidence to integrate impact investing into their
portfolios. These for-profit investments can organically drive
development while supporting the social and economic missions
of institutions.
TOIGO. As a fellow, Toigo was my introduction to and educational
source for finding career opportunities that would allow me to
merge my financial and social passions. Now, the organization has
facilitated a much broader spectrum of my needs, from providing
advice on navigating career challenges to connecting me with client
and investment opportunities.
TODAY. I am proud to be a successful investment professional and
role model to the generations that will follow in my foot steps.
TOMORROW. I would like to give back by mentoring Toigo Fellows
as they consider the many career options available to them in the
finance industry.
TOIGO. I am grateful for the unwavering support Toigo has offered
to me throughout my career. This is why I remain committed to
financial giveback to the organization.

TOIGO. Toigo has been instrumental in shaping my development
while enabling me to tap into an unparalleled network of finance

TODAY. I am proud to be committed to the improvement of the US

TOMORROW. I would like to give back by mentoring, educating and
providing access to individuals in underserved communities.
TOIGO. I have been blessed to be part of the Toigo Family as both
an MBA Fellow and a Private Equity Fellow. Toigo provided me
with the support and training to succeed in the recruiting process
and access to a unique and powerful network. Through the Toigo
Private Equity Fellowship I was fortunate to work as an Investment

where I had the opportunity to work on various transactions and

TOIGO. Toigo has impressed upon me the importance of being a

play in helping others. This is the collective strength of the Toigo
community, and my personal and professional experience have
been greatly enriched by the positive examples that have been set.

TODAY. I am working toward building a viable and vibrant new
media business. I want my business training to bring discipline to
my creativity. But I want my creativity to bring joy to the way I build
my business.
TOMORROW. I would like to give back by offering my time as a
mentor so that I can return the goodwill that was sown into me.
TOIGO. The primary value of Toigo lies in its ability to accelerate
your learning and elevate the trajectory of your career. Toigo gave
me the credibility I needed to be considered for an opportunity that
would likely have been out of reach otherwise. I’m thankful to Toigo
for providing me that edge. As I now transition into a new role as
entrepreneur, I find myself again drawing on support from the Toigo
network, some of the same folks that offered their help back when
I was a student. It is heartening to see that support network is as
strong as ever, particularly for those of us forging new paths.
TODAY. I am proud to be working towards making retirement better
for 15 thousand people; and being a mentor; and mom to an amazing
and hilarious three year old.
TOMORROW. I envision myself as a change agent and thought
leader in my field.
TOIGO. Toigo is a phenomenal network of incredibly talented
investment professionals. It is quite simply a remarkable organization
to have as an advocate. The Toigo Family (and that is exactly what
we are—a family) is an extended one, full of people who want to see
you succeed, pay it forward, and give back. It is a great family to
have, a very worthwhile organization to support, and I am extremely
fortunate and proud to be a Fellow.
TODAY. I am working toward establishing a long/short value-focused
hedge fund.
TOMORROW. I would like to give back by deploying capital to
underfunded minority enterprises.
TOIGO. I am thankful to be a Fellow, Alumnus, and member of
the Toigo family. The organization has been extremely supportive
throughout my career progression. As an M&A adviser, I developed
strong relationships on both sides of the Atlantic. Currently, as I
expand Public Infrastructure Partners to include buy-side investing,
I am grateful for the network, support, and guidance of Toigo friends
and family.
TODAY. My goal is to capitalize on the continued inability for small
companies to finance growth and operators to finance transitional
real estate assets by being a provider of capital.
TOMORROW. I would like to give back by creating opportunities
for aspiring entrepreneurs of color to receive both funding and
advisory support.
TOIGO. The Toigo Foundation has been supportive of my career
at every stage. APEx training during business school laid the
foundation for professional development; the Toigo network has
provided access to unique employment opportunities; and of
course, the Toigo brand has come to be respected in Corporate
America with respect to business talent.

TODAY. I am working toward securing Americans’ pensions by
helping plan sponsors build diversified investment portfolios to
weather volatile financial markets.
TOMORROW. I would like to give back by improving the lives
of underserved children through investing in communities that
cultivate academic, creative and spiritual qualities.
TOIGO. Upon meeting a new industry contact, my Toigo affiliation
establishes instant credibility leading to better and more effective
business discussions. Furthermore, I have fostered relationships
with industry peers whom share a common desire to solve complex
problems within the finance industry.
TODAY. My responsibilities involve researching managers and
different investment strategies with the goal of constructing alpha-
generating multi-asset portfolios.
TOMORROW. I envision myself as a key contributor to the growth of
BlackRock’s fiduciary outsourcing business in the US.
TOIGO. The Toigo affiliation has helped broaden my perspective and
deepen my understanding of the institutional asset management
industry by providing me with access to the extensive network of
Toigo alumni, affiliates, and supporters.
TODAY. I am proud to be part of a world-class organization run
with such integrity and excellence as T Rowe Price. Here, my
responsibilities involve making sense of seemingly random data
across the world, making tough decisions on little information, and
assessing risk vs. what the market implies to help us pick the best
energy stocks and maximize value for those who have entrusted us
with their money.
TOMORROW. I would like to give back by being a person who
leverages my resources to further the cause of global justice for the
exploited and helpless and being as influential a mentor to a Toigo
Fellow as my Toigo mentor was to me.
TOIGO. I know without a doubt that I would not be where I am
without my Toigo mentor who invested a tremendous amount of
his personal time and energy to set me on the right trajectory. For
making that possible, I am forever grateful to the Toigo Foundation.
TODAY. I am proud to be a real estate investment professional
whose ultimate responsibility is the fiduciary duty of maximizing

other individuals committed to service can enjoy a secure and

TOMORROW. I would like to give back by empowering others
to achieve their full potential. I look forward to a time when I
am in a position of social, financial, and civic influence to create
opportunities where others do not see them and inspire the next
generation to harness them.
TOIGO. The Fellowship served as a catalyst for my career
transformation, from being an engineer in public service to an
investment manager in the world of finance. The Toigo network has
served as my well of inspiration for all the things I never imagined
but now know are possible. Every interaction I have with “anything
Toigo” invigorates me with enthusiasm for a brighter future.

TODAY. My goal is to continually strive for excellence within the
digital, media & entertainment, and sports & lifestyle sectors as an
advisor and an investor.
TOMORROW. I envision myself as a harbinger of creativity, ideas and
thought within industry and my community—inspiring others to be
more.
TOIGO. Toigo presented me with a challenge to ‘take the stage’ and
I realized as a Fellow that I was in fact a leader—something that
prior to Toigo I had forced myself to be, but had not yet chosen to
become. Toigo has served as an invaluable laboratory for me, stoking
a courage to constantly invent and discover success through my
own unique sets of skills and talents that may have gone unpaired
otherwise.
TODAY. I am proud to be a successful Latina in private equity. As
someone in a position to serve as an example and help others,
particularly other Latinas, I find great satisfaction in being able
to inspire the next generation, provide access, and empower the
advancement of other Toigo Alums.
TOMORROW. I envision myself as taking on greater responsibility
in the industry to develop opportunities in the emerging markets
(namely Latin America and Africa) and explore the frontiers of
social and environmentally responsible investing.
TOIGO. Initially, representing myself as a Toigo fellow provided a
certain level of credibility and recognition that opened doors and
provided a seat at the table in the financial services community.
Over time, the ability to forge productive relationships with plan
sponsors and leading asset management firms has been accelerated
and produced tangible results.
TODAY. My responsibilities involve analyzing real estate trends
to formulate the investment strategy for a U.S. core real estate
platform, in addition to portfolio management activities, working
with asset management and acquisitions.
TOMORROW. I would like to give back by serving as a mentor to
young professionals interested in a career in real estate finance.
TOIGO. The Toigo Foundation provided me a solid foundation for
a career in real estate through its pre-MBA workshop, professional
development seminars and mentoring program. I am very grateful
and proud to be a Toigo Fellow.
TODAY. My goal is to succeed where I fear failing.
TOMORROW. I hope to achieve responsibilities that today seem far
out of reach.

in my career today. I am a prime beneficiary of Toigo’s mission to
change the face of finance. My goal is to help the Foundation further
its mission by passing the benefits that I have received from Toigo
on to the next generation.

TODAY. I am proud to be an American who came to this great
nation at a young age, and was given the opportunity to pursue
educational and professional success and supported throughout by
the foresight, generosity, and guidance of those who came before
me.
TOMORROW. I hope to achieve an industry leadership position
defined as much by a commitment to integrity, collaboration,
and helping clients and colleagues achieve alongside me as by
professional success.
TOIGO. The Toigo Fellowship has been a defining experience during
and after my business education at Columbia Business School.
It gave me coaching, mentoring, and role models. It gave me
opportunities and opened doors that many in these times feared
were permanently closed. And most importantly, it gave me some
of the best friends I could ask for in the Toigo Class of 2011.

TODAY. My goal is to use my business savvy to address complex
problems and create sustainable value.
TOMORROW. I envision myself as a business leader and philanthropist.
TOIGO. I always say the best way to reach great heights is to stand
on the shoulders of giants. My Toigo affiliation provides me the
network I need to reach those heights.
TODAY. My responsibilities involve being a student of the global
economy and capital markets.
TOMORROW. I would like to give back by mentoring and helping
others reach their goals, as people have been there for me
throughout my career.
TOIGO. The Toigo network has been there for me every step along
the way. Having people to guide me, coach me, and advise me
throughout my post-graduate career has been invaluable.
TODAY. I am proud to be an example to young girls of what is
possible through hard work, determination and perseverance.
TOMORROW. I hope to achieve greater scale and reach in my efforts
to empower individuals towards self-sufficiency.
TOIGO. The Toigo Foundation helped me develop a career roadmap.
The organization then provided me with the necessary tools and
resources to not only achieve my goals, but to exceed them. I
credit my interest in real estate private equity, and specifically asset
management, to my Toigo Coach. I still look to my Toigo Mentor for
both personal and professional guidance. And, it was a Togio fellow
and friend who encouraged me to always think and dream “big”
when considering opportunities during and after business school.
These individuals and the organization have played a key role in my
professional aspirations and success and for that I am grateful.

TODAY. I am working toward being a better leader.
TOMORROW. I envision myself leader impacting the community I
live in.
TOIGO. Toigo has been one of the most life changing experiences
I have ever had. I was humbled and honored to be accepted to the
program, but I had no idea how much impact the Toigo family would
have on me until I participated in the APEx Orientation program.
I not only had the chance to meet great peers but also to make
lifelong friends. Toigo supported me to get my summer MBA
internship and was fundamental and making me realize that I need
to follow my gut and pursue my dreams.
TODAY. I am working toward building out emerging allocations in
a manner that will ultimately make them inclusive in all diversified
portfolios.
TOMORROW. I envision myself as a model of potential success to be
achieved through paths not oft chosen.
TOIGO. The Toigo Foundation has not only provided an instant
network of deeply experienced and well pedigreed and positioned
minority professionals, but also has given me an additional stamp
of credibility that has helped open doors and move forward
conversations that I may not have otherwise been afforded the
opportunity to pursue.
TODAY. I am proud to be an entrepreneur.
TOMORROW. I envision myself as an entrepreneur encouraging
others to incorporate entrepreneurship into their lives and careers.
TOIGO. By opening its doors to me, Toigo has made it possible
for me to take active part in the invaluable community of diverse
business executives and leaders.
Barry ZhangChief Executive Officer | Quantico Energy Solutions

TODAY. I am working toward building a new energy technology
company that increases the production of unconventional oil and
gas assets.
TOMORROW. I hope to achieve success applying US technologies to
help make energy more available in China, where I was born.
TOIGO. The Toigo Foundation has taught me how to apply a
framework to develop myself professionally and personally,
including the way I think, my self-confidence and leadership skills.
For example, seven years after b-school, I still go to my Toigo coach
to bounce ideas off of. He and others within the Toigo network have
given me the unique privilege of learning from their professional
experiences. This generosity and openness cannot be matched by
any other professional group that I’m affiliated with, and in my view,
is one of the true cornerstones of being part of the Toigo family.

Special ThanksThe Toigo Foundation gratefully acknowledges the following for their support and involvement in the success of the 2013 Gala.
