TOK: Emotion and Society
4 November 2013
Project Overview
• How does this suggest emotion
is in helping to create a better
society?
• One person’s emotion towards
something can develop more
efficient products because they
are passionate about it and
want it to be perfected.
Example One
• Dean Kamen, as seen in the TED Video has demonstrated a passion
for the soldiers who serve our country. He believes their
enthuisiam and commitment towards America, even during a time
where they are losing limbs, is inspiring and worthy of being
rewarded. o “People with a desire to do something are quite remarkable”
o “I know what these kids deserve”
• His emotion for the soldiers grew each time he worked with them
in creating the most efficient arm. His emotions which are love,
happiness, enthusiasm, are making society better because he is
giving soldiers back their lives.
Example Two
• In January of 2013 I was in middle of raising money to build a school. I
needed to raise $25,000. I was feeling a little discouraged because I
was only $5,000 from my goal, but wasn’t sure where I was going to
get the money.
• How was it resolved?o I traveled to Guatemala and got to meet the community where my school
was going to be built. I fell in love with the community. My emotions were all
over the place and I even cried when I saw their current condition.
• What and how did it impact the project?o This re-created my drive to raise the last bit of money. With the new energy
and inspiration my emotions raised $7,000 more and I was able to build that
community a new school.

Example Three
• Cancer research is driven purely by emotions. People do
not like to see their family members dying from
incurable diseases. In the U.S. 5,000 people find out they
have cancer every day. That impacts millions of families
all over the world.
• There is sympathy, sadness, pity, and determination.
• Doctors are looking for cures and supporters are raising
the funds. The emotions are working to create a
healthier society.

Conclusion
Overall, the video shows that Dean Kamen’s relationship that
he developed over the research period of time with the
soldier’s ignited his determination to build the best, well
functioning arm that he could and he wouldn’t stop until it
gave the soldier’s what they deserved. Same goes with a lot
of things in society, the more we get attached to whether its
cancer research, building a school, or war conflicts people
are going to work their hardest to make society better
because they care more deeply about the topic.
