Page 2: Tok prezis 2013

• Two groups together for two days. Two teachers. Both groups

attend both days.

• Presentations will be on Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th June

• As in the past Science would like to use the Thursday for those Year 12s doing Science EEs to get some lab time

• If you are doing a Science EE you will need to work with your TOK teachers to ensure you do your presentation on Wednesday

General …..

• Get familiar with the assessment objectives – today will help!

• Pick an issue which is topical and touches peoples hearts!

• Understand what is meant by a Knowledge Issue • Speak TOKese! • Don’t prepare an essay and then read it! • Be creative • Don’t just write – practice the performance

Page 4: Tok prezis 2013
Page 5: Tok prezis 2013

• Did the presentation identify a relevant knowledge issue involved, implicit or embedded in a real-life situation?

• 1–2 - The presentation referred to a knowledge issue but it was irrelevant to the real-life situation under consideration.

• 3–4 - The presentation identified a knowledge issue that was in some ways relevant to the real-life situation under consideration.

• 5 - The presentation identified a knowledge issue that was clearly relevant to the real-life situation under consideration

Page 6: Tok prezis 2013

• Do not pick an issue or topic that is too obscure that it takes too much time to explain to the audience

• Do not pick one that is too obvious or one that is clichéd.

• Knowledge issue is framed as a question.

• What is a KI?

• “Knowledge issues are questions that directly refer to our understanding of the world, ourselves and others in connection with the acquisition, search for, production, shaping and acceptance of knowledge” Source: TOK Guide Page 9

Real life situation: the death of the Indian woman in Ireland when she was refused an abortion even though very ill.

Should abortion be allowed?

How do we know what decisions should be made by the state (the government) and what should be up to the individual?

How can we know when abortion should be allowed? … or who should decide whether abortion should be allowed

How do we know whether the religious beliefs of some should affect the rules we make for all?

How can we know when life begins?

Page 8: Tok prezis 2013

How do we know whether gay marriage should be allowed?

Should gay marriage be allowed?

How do we know to what extent the views of the majority should be taken into account when the state legislates?

How do we know whether a (radical) change is for the better?

• Diaoyu / Senkaku Island dispute

• Big Yellow duck in Hong Kong harbour

• Fad diets

• Dock strike in Hong Kong

• ESF fees rise

• Chemical warfare / Syria

• Human trafficking / Kidnap

• Illegal drugs

• “Setting out your stall”

• Should include

• Relevant and topical every day topic

• Clearly expressed knowledge issue with any

subsidiary questions this poses;

• How you will approach (‘treat’) the KI – mentioning

the WOKs and AOKs that you intend to consider;

• A ‘tease’ as to any conclusions you reach

• Reasons for choosing this topic

Page 11: Tok prezis 2013

• Did the presentation show a good understanding of

knowledge issues, in the context of the real-life situation?

• 1–2 - The presentation showed some understanding of knowledge issues.

• 3–4 - The presentation showed an adequate understanding of knowledge issues.

• 5 - The presentation showed a good understanding of knowledge issues.

Page 12: Tok prezis 2013

• List any subsidiary questions ( 2-3 maximum)

• Appraising knowledge claims. Find podcasts, videos and/or texts produced by people making a knowledge claim (presenting a view about your KI) then analyze their position and compare it with counter claims.

• YOU MUST USE (ACREDITED) SOURCES

• “The limitations of this definition / argument are.....”

• “If we define it differently (from another cultural / linguistic/ experiential) perspective then......”

• “The logical fallacy in this perspective is....”

KEY MESSAGE!!!:

Every presentation will have to discuss the relative strengths and weaknesses of a chosen range of WOKs and AOKs relevant to debate of the chosen issue.

Page 14: Tok prezis 2013

• In other words, you identify a knowledge claim and find flaws

with it that may include the following:

• Limitations • Assumptions • Bias • Alternative cultural & linguistic

perspectives • Problems with justification or

proof • Different definitions • Problems of logic

• Alternative sides to an issue • Differences in perception • Relational questions • Philosophies or theories

R.Bruford, 2008

Page 15: Tok prezis 2013

• Did the presentation, particularly in the use of arguments and

examples, show an individual approach and demonstrate the significance of the topic?

• 1–2 - The presentation, in its use of arguments and examples or otherwise, showed limited personal involvement and did not demonstrate the significance of the topic.

• 3–4 - The presentation, in its use of arguments and examples or otherwise, showed some personal involvement and adequately demonstrated the significance of the topic.

• 5 - The presentation, in its distinctively personal use of arguments and examples or otherwise, showed clear personal involvement and fully demonstrated the significance of the topic.

Page 16: Tok prezis 2013

• Understanding of your own world view and how it might ‘get

in the way’;

• Ensuring that you show how the issue in question relates to your life, why it is important and what the implications for you might be going forward;

• A personal and creative input. Fresh thinking – not just recycled!

Page 17: Tok prezis 2013

• It may be that you have personal experience of the issue;

• A personal and yet justified position as a conclusion;

• If someone else could give the same presentation – then it is not going to be unique. Demonstrate why the topic is especially of interest to you.

Page 18: Tok prezis 2013

• Did the presentation give a balanced account of how the topic could be approached from different perspectives?

• Did the presentation show how the positions taken on the knowledge issues would have implications in related areas?

• 1–2 - The presentation explored at least two different perspectives to some extent.

• 3–4 - The presentation gave a satisfactory account of how the question could be approached from different perspectives, and began to explore their similarities and differences.

• 5 - The presentation gave a clear account of how the question could be approached from different perspectives and considered their implications in related areas.

Page 19: Tok prezis 2013

This is where you get a chance to say why your Knowledge Issue is

important and it is the area most students are weak on.

How do we know whether the religious beliefs of some should affect our rules for all?

Was your presentation balanced? What does balanced mean? Are there always two sides to an argument, for example should we give Creationism equal respect with The Theory of Evolution?

Page 20: Tok prezis 2013

Did the presentation show how positions taken on the knowledge issue would have implications in related areas?

How do we know whether the religious beliefs of some should affect our rules for all?

Page 21: Tok prezis 2013

If the answer is an extreme democratic one, that is the religious beliefs of the majority can be imposed on minorities, such as in Switzerland, (mosque building banned) then we (a) end up banning a lot of things that we used to tolerate and (b) we need to think very carefully about immigration into our country as if we believe that once a majority then a group can democratically ban something we may want to prevent this.

Page 22: Tok prezis 2013

On the other hand if the decision is one that says all can be tolerated, then how far can we go with this?

Do we accept female circumcision?
