had 29 people show up for the seminar and many kayaked down the river afterwards.
Well, after my article last month which I thought was halfway decent, I was scolded by a nuptial member of the Zib-bel Mafia. It was claimed I did not mention this individual soon enough in the article or in a positive manner. My response: This individual is therefore positively mentioned in the first line of my report. Over the Memorial Day Weekend on behalf of the TSPS, I attended the Maumee River Yacht Club’s Opening of the Port. It was a well-organized, enjoyable, well-attended event. I counted 138 yachtsmen and women in short sleeve white shirts with no ties, white slacks, or white skirts, and white shoes. I counted only one individual who showed up in long sleeves, black long tie, black slacks, and black shoes (your TSPS Commander). On Memorial Day Monday, I attended the Toledo Yacht Club Memorial Day festivities. I was told it started at 9 a.m. After being held up by two different trains for extended periods of time, I thankfully arrived at 8:50 a.m. The parking lot was essentially empty. In true yachting fashion the bar, however, was open and several individuals there instructed me the festivities started at 10 a.m.! This time I was properly dressed. I wore a short sleeve, white shirt with no tie. However, for this meeting everyone showed up in long sleeve white shirts and long black ties. I was saved by the Coast Guard. Their two rep-resentatives showed up with short sleeve shirts with open necks. The ceremony was well-coordinated and moving. Despite being out of the uniform of the day for both events, at MRYC the Coast Guard District Commander ex-pressed a desire to work more closely with the Toledo Sail and Power Squadron for our mutual benefits. The TYC folks could not have been nicer and asked we help instruct their members in better seamanship especially boat/yacht mooring. They requested for next year’s event our color guard participate, given our “superior talents” in that arena. I have been canvassing ideas and opinions for the upcoming Commander’s rendezvous at the Maumee Bay State Park tentatively for the end of September 22, 23, and 24. I have just been told the docks at MBSP have a 50% of be-ing removed shortly after Labor Day for renovation and replacement. The Middle Bass Island State Park Informal Rendezvous will be October 14, 15, and 16. I do not want the reader to feel all is going awry when the opposite is true. The squadron’s educational and festive activities are on track and going well. We soon will have a new S. N. The Shakedown Cruise while windy, rainy, and rough was nonetheless a joy. Our Sidecut Park event was rained out and closed early but was successful.
June, July, August, and September are the meat of our boating season. Review elsewhere in The Breeze the upcom-ing boating rendezvous and educational boating events for the summer and the educational events for the fall.
As always, each member’s participation in Squadron events only makes them better! Six monthly reports down, five more to go!

In Michigan, anyone born after December 31, 1978 and in Ohio, anyone born after Jan-uary 1, 1982 must take a safe boating class to operate a vessel with 10 hp or more.

Test Your Mustang Life Jacket

We are always told as a Vessel Examiner to wear our life jackets to project the idea of safety to the boating public. I am sure that most VEs
have done so over the past 8 years that we have had them.
Now as we head into the boating season and all of the associated activities, I would suggest that the first thing a VE should do is examine
and test his/her Mustang Inflatable life jacket. It is suggested that this operation be performed every 2 to 3 months. I bet you have not
even done it once in the 8 years you have had the jackets. I am suggesting this exercise because we have found a few jackets that won't
hold air. If one of these is found I suggest that it be destroyed and disposed of because the total life expectancy is only 10 years.
So how do we test our jacket? Open it up along the Velcro seams as shown in
Figure 1 until it looks like figure 2. Then remove the cap on the oral inflation
tube (shown in figure 2) and inflate the Life Jacket orally.
Then keep the jacket inflated over night. If it fails to hold air all night it is de-
fective. If it holds air ok, then reverse the oral inflation cap and compress the
jacket to remove all of the air. Once deflated, replace the cap to its original
position and fold the sides back and press the Velcro seams to hold the jacket
together.
Now if you happen to really need the jacket while doing a VSC (Heaven forbid
you fall into the water) the life jacket would be known to be useable.

Cdr Len Buck called meeting to order 1900. Pledge of Allegiance recited. Quorum confirmed. Minutes of 4/25/17 approved upon motion by Larry Cole, 2nd by Nelson Evans.
Cdr Buck opened meeting with his customary “warm-up”—i.e., reviewing Squadron activities that occurred since last meeting.
Executive Officer – Rita Buck called for various reports as follows:
Boat Shows: Squadron display at Metroparks Outdoor Adventure May 20 at Side Cut Park: John Mather reported good turn-out, T-storms mid-afternoon shut event down; Most interested in kayak and canoe. Volunteering for squadron were P/C John Mather, Susan Goodman, Gloria Parker, P/C Audie Jaqua, Joyce Mease. Co-op charting, no report. Vessel Safety Checks, 8 completed by Mike Schabeck. Public Relations, Joyce Mease reported on advertising of June 3 Kayak Seminar in Matt Markey’s column, Blade paid ad for 14 days in Boating section, in OurTowns in Blade. Point Place Parade, June 3, we are signed up to participate on Brenner Marine’s pontoon boat pulled by their tow truck.

Upcoming meetings: Good reports about our May general membership meeting at Maumee River YC (service and food). Indications are we should go back again. Other considerations for forthcoming meetings are: Ottawa River YC, Lost Peninsula, Riverview YC. June meeting planned for Meinke Marina, details in Breeze. Plans for December 2 meeting/fund rais-er with presentation by Navy Seal Medal of Honor winner continuing. Working to get corporate sponsors. $1,500 donated by HCR ManorCare. Fred is working on their request that we prepare a video on boating safety for their Dragon Boat participants as well as we conduct a Lunch and Learn seminar for their organization.
Cruises: P-I-B Shakedown cruise. May 19-20-21, rainy, windy, wild and fun, 5 boats participated.

Seamanship finished, students took test. For on-the-water following Seamanship, planning to work with students on their own boat. Perrysburg ABC Class netted 16 new members, 10 will be at Meinke Marina meeting June 6. Please meet and welcome them. Kayak Seminar June 3, 24 signed up (15 are non-members). AP class, 4 in class have completed, 3 took test, 1 yet to take test.
Treasurer: Larry Cole distributed Balance Sheet as of May 30, 2017 and P&L year to date. Membership dues (we pay our dues direct to National) are being received by Squadron from National. Larry reported $800 in Breeze business ads that he and Dale Overly have sold to date. Time to renew donations to be listed in Friends of the “Breeze”. $10 for a “Friends” donation, $20 (or more) for a “Senior Friends” donation.

Commander’s Report: Cdr Buck noted that new Bylaws will be voted on by General Membership. Only a couple of minor changes were made to our existing By-Laws (couple of committees combined and word “yachting” changed to “boating”). North Cape Yacht Club has invited people to a Thursday presentation of “Sail the World” and some TSPS members plan to attend. For Cedar Point Boat Show August 24-27 need volunteers at District 29 booth. $20 parking per car (carpool?), no ad-mission fee. Cdr Buck represented squadron at Opening of the Port ceremony at Maumee River YC. Represented squadron at TYC’s Memorial Day commemoration. Commander’s Rendezvous – Cdr looking at holding at Maumee Bay State Park after La-bor Day, 3rd weekend of Sept. 22-23-24. Cdr checking into dock availability and negotiating room rates and party room rate. There is also a campground. Cdr still looking for feedback from members. Cdr also considering a weekend for Squadron at Middle Bass Island State Park (the park’s last weekend of their season). More details will be forthcoming.
Committee Reports: only report was from Auditing (Barbara Mather, John Miga, P/C Art Raker): Barb Mather commented 2016 audit completed, most of 2016 audited earlier. Audit Committee had a comment on blue vouchers for cash received which Cdr Buck asked them to reconsider and report at future meeting.

Good of Squadron:
On April 26 Joyce Mease and Nancy Bell represented Squadron at Point Place Business Assn. Scholarship award banquet. The Squadron made a $100 donation in the yachting/boating club category in 2016. Six scholarships were awarded. Toledo Squadron was recognized and thanked. Article in Point & Shoreland Journal where TSPS was again recognized.
On May 25 P/C Haynes Lee and Marge along with Ernie and Joyce Mease attended the Toledo Maritime Academy of Tole-do high school graduation. TSPS was acknowledged and thanked for a 2016 scholarship donation of $500 (from the Past Commander’s Flower fund). Donation will go to students employed in maritime for their necessary licenses, fees, etc.
Once the Canadian marine officer gained access to the sailboat the next question was inquiring about passing through customs. After the marine patrol boat radioed customs, it was generally agreed upon that the sailboat and its passengers had entered Ca-nadian waters illegally.
At this point things were not to get any better. The officer found many bottles of hard liquor without Canadian tax stamps. Contraband is a really bad word at this stage, but there was even still more. The officer came upon a large collection of pre-scription drugs that was eye opening. Here George could defend himself as he explained that due to his poor health he needed these medicines to stay alive. Well, they were all labeled with current dates, prescription numbers, and George’s name.
The marine patrol really had a situation in their lap. Four old guys who entered
Canadian waters illegally with contraband, and no fishing licenses; what were they to do? They could not arrest them; there was the problem of the boat…well in the interest of efficiency, the sailboat and its passengers were ordered to up anchor and leave. Shock rippled through these old fellows as one spoke up.
George replied, “We can’t leave. It is illegal to operate a boat while intoxicated.”
The last comment from the officer was to get out in the morning. They did, and went do another spot a mile down the coast to finish up having a merry time.
When George finished telling me this story I just shook my head and we both laughed. I told him that he had literally shocked me. Here was another side of
George that I never knew. As the years slowly passed along we would see our friend only a few times. His health was taking a toll. He began to shuffle as he walked, his memory was starting to fail and his eyes were loosing their sparkle.
George realized he could no longer sail his beloved boat alone so he hired a young man who would be his companion and help with the boat. The two of them sailed together for a couple of years and George was forever thankful for being able to be on the water. The end came gently as he passed away on land; many boaters and landlubbers alike would miss him.
It was an honor to have known George and we think of him often. Phil and I wish to dedicate this article to…

Cruise to Catawba Island

To all members, families and guests of the Toledo Sail and Power Squadron are invited to attend our 5th annual cruise to the Port Clinton area, actually Catawba Island (2nd for this location).

(by car take route 2 just past Port Clinton onto route 53 north, marina is just before Marine Max and public boat ramp, Islands only gas station is in front marina, if you past this then you just went too far)
Planned Activities:
Friday evening; Stern in party, located in the picnic area starting around 6:30 pm.
Saturday; Inflatable/small boat harbor cruise/ lunch at Crabby Joes across harbor/ swimming, beach or pool/ from 11:00 ish to ??? (bring hand held radio’s)
Dinner Saturday night, will be at Nagoya on the corner of Rt 163 and 53 at 8:00 pm. There is a bar located in the restaurant for those that would like to come early. (You must make dinner reservations!)
Several of us will also have cars so that will help transport people. Please feel free to join us for lunch and/or dinner by car. Just let us know I will need reservations for Sat. night dinner.
Dockage: $1.00 per foot (If you need more information on area, harbor or marina let me know.)
Other Accommodations: There are many hotels nearby, and they do have a few spots at the marina for campers/ RV’s.

The Program is a major public service of USPS. Under it, members supply information to the above agencies, leading to corrections to nautical charts and Coast Pilot publications
The Aid-To-Navigation and Bridge Inspection pro-grams support the USACE and Coast Guard in as-suring waterways are properly marked and main-tained.
We have been told that the Cooperative Charting Program is recognized as the most effective user-participation program in all of the Federal services.
