Vice President’s Corner...

Spring is fast approaching and White Mountain has lots happening! April 14 & 15, painting with Connie Parkinson, which is close to full, but there is still room for you. I hear that Connie is lots of fun too! May 6th has a terrific afternoon program of

“Mystery Techniques”, three fun ways to add to your painting arsenal. Can you guess what they will be? 1) Pen, 2) Old/New Label & 3) 2 0z jars filled with ??? I can tell you it will be FUN! And, you’ll go home with a finished project incorporating the tech-niques.

A “Pizza” party from Portland Pie Co. will be lunch along with salad and sweets; yummy. I am asking for a little help from you as well, please find “Goodies needed Badly” in this Newsletter.

We are also planning a special sale to you as mem-bers of WMG, “The Diane Morgan Gallery”. This will be art that Diane has painted or surfaces she started to paint and did not finish, which you will be able to do and have a wonderful memento to remem-ber her by. These items were donated to the Guild by her husband Wayne. The Board voted to give a per-centage of these sales back to Wayne which will help him as well. A very good deed for all!

Looking forward, June 9th will be our next Paint-In with Dotty Pullo and Cindy Harrison, thanks ladies! July, Kelly Hoernig teaching colored pencils. Then at the September meeting Janice Tomlin will bring “Witchabella” for our painting pleasure and the No-vember meeting will be a nice 12” oval plaque with Carol Howard. Nice lineup! And, remember October “NET” convention.

The afternoon programs for 2013 meetings are just about complete. September 2013 is still open for the special project you would like to share or if you have a suggestion for a teacher or project you think would be great, please contact me. Thanks.

Sharing the Love of Painting! - Elaine

More Tips ‘N Tricks

YEAH! NET Catalogs are going to be out soon. Make sure your WMDPG renewal has been received by Karen so that you can receive your FREE Catalog. And also, if you're "tardy to the party", you

can still renew with SDP online at

http://decorativepainters.org - it's so easy!

Peggy Harris frequently posts tips on Face-book. She’s one of the wonderful decora-tive artists that are so fun to friend. Here are some more of her recent tips. TIP: Lighten metallic colors with metallic white (ie White Pearl, Pearl White, etc.) since the color will remain metallic. Add-ing regular white acrylic will surround the mica chips and it will no longer be metal-lic. (Adding just a little regular white will produce various degrees of pearlized col-ors.) By the way, in a recent NET seminar our own Mary Svenson CDA showed how to make a variety of metallic colors by mixing different JoSonja Metallic colors. A great way to decorate Christmas ornaments. TIP: Be sure you are sitting high enough when you paint ... average chair to table height is far too low for art and painting!!!! Purchase a hydraulic secretary chair at any office supply outlet (fairly cheap these days) which allows you to position ade-quately above your work and also allows your body freedom of movement when cre-ating strokes! Also, make sure your water basin and pal-ette are at a comfortable distance so you don’t strain your arm or shoulder.

Governing Board

First in a Series: Why does WMDPG have a Governing Board and what makes it strong?

WMDPG has a governing board to operate and manage the wide range of responsibilities as dictated in the by-laws and standing rules of the organization. (i.e.) maintain a not for profit organization, promote the art form of decorative painting, collect dues, conduct 5 general meetings including educational afternoon pro-grams, sponsor Paint-Ins and seminars for the membership in support of the Society of Decorative Paint-ing. This is a huge commitment for the Officers and members of the Board; who are volunteers and give their time and talent to the good of WMDPG promoting the art form of decorative painting.

The strength of the Governing Board comes from:

• Understanding of the organizational goals

• Being familiar with the inter workings of WMDPG

• Understanding of the By-laws and standing rules of WMDPG

• Willing to work with others for the common good of WMDPG

• Continuity of officers and of the members of the board

• All members having an understanding of the jobs of officers and members of the board

Thoughts to ponder! More info to come...

Dear Secret Pal,

Thanks so much for the Birthday card and the lovely flowers in such a unique container.

The flowers lasted TWO weeks and looked great in my dining room, which only means I had to clean off the table to put them there!!

Thanks again, S.P., Kris Lafayette

Oh, Jeni…..

Jeni and I talked for a while this morning, and oh, she forgot to tell me something. So she emailed me her

news, and said that I could share it with her painting friends…

YESTERDAY I GOT A PHONE CALL and THE GIRL ON THE OTHER END SAID IS THIS JENI AND I said YEAH!!!

She said well, this is Liz Cheney...and I repeated Liz Cheney and then I screamed Liz Cheney...she said yes and I could hear her laughing and she said my Dad Dick Cheney would like to speak to you....I talked with him for 5 minutes -he was in his hospital room just recovering from the heart transplant he got and I had writ-ten a letter congratulating him on this new heart and he said my letter meant so much to him that he wanted to call me to thank me personally. I was straight out!! I mailed his letter out on one of my envelopes with one of my roses painted on it and I think that may have gotten some attention, you think? I told him how grateful I was to hear from him personally because I thought the letter would end up in the Executive file basket (waste paper basket) but he said oh no we are keeping this one. Can you believe the Vice President of the United States calling up to thank me for a letter? That’s why I sounded so chipper.

"and that's why we all love you, Jeni! Always reaching out to others..."" - Janice Tomlin

for 2012

TOLE POINT SYSTEM – The Tole Point System has become anti-quated. This program has ceased as of January 1, 2012. If you have Tole Dollars, please use them up before December 31, 2012 . NEWSLETTER GOING GREEN – The Board voted that the Newslet-ter will now be sent out via email. If you do not have a computer or email capabilities, you will receive a hardcopy version of the newsletter FREE! However, if you have an email address but choose to receive the full hardcopy of the Newsletter, you must pay an additional $10 yearly in addition to your annual dues. Please note this on your Mem-bership Renewal Form.

Hello Friends!

Yes, it's true, I forgot to sit on my hands at the last meeting and I volunteered to co-ordinate the WMDPG Country Store Committee for NET. I am so very lucky that KATHY TANGUAY has agreed to be my co-chair. Thank you Kathy! ELAINE MC MAHON, last year's chair, has agreed to help me as well and NANCY SCHLIS has volunteered as well. With Kathy's organizational skills, Elaine's manage-ment skills and Nancy's creativity this will be a won-derful train to get aboard!

Soo... we need YOUR help. I am in possession of same great wood surfaces, donated by Wayne Mor-gan, in memory of Diane. These surfaces are BEG-GING to be painted by YOU. The items include large and small tavern signs, barrel staves and wood votive holders. Do you have the perfect pattern for one or two of these surfaces? I will do my best to get the surfaces to you to paint for the NET country store. Please call or e mail me ASAP, I am sure these surfaces will be going fast!

Interested in holding a Share-In? Please call or e mail. I have "lots" of pieces begging to be painted and my husband will be happy to get them out of the house. A win-win situation all around.

A special gift from me, (hint: rhymes with in) will be given to everyone who donates two painted items for WMDPG to sell at the NET Country Store during our convention in October. It's not that far away, so start planning a share-in, finding that pattern, and calling me for surfaces. I am planning a denim purse PAINT IN in the near future. Date and place TBA.

Thank you in advance, and I hope to hear from you all soon.

Thank you again, Suzi and Cindy, for sharing your notes from the N.E.T. meeting. Highlights include the fol-lowing:

The cost for 2012 & 2013 will remain the same as 2011. The Hotel/Trade Center fees were rumored to be dou-bled, but they are so pleased with us that they kept the fees the same as last year. WOOT! It’s still $7500 for the hotel and $7500 for the exhibit hall. We are going to have the entire hotel -salons & classrooms. No other events will be booked that week/weekend! It will be extra for security and the transport van. They also have us on the calendar for 2014 and 2015.

The Hotel is going to put out a grab & go breakfast area (where the lunch area was last year). This should help facilitate the moving of people prior to their 8:00 classes.

The Art Show will be down on the Trade Floor. Monitors room will be in the Corporate Room (out back of the Salons).

Cindy & Cheryl asked to have the next meeting in early next month so the envelopes could be stuffed right afterwards. Grace asked that any NECC/NET people that could stay after to help would be appreciated. So we will be stuffing catalogs/raffle tickets after the meeting in April. This will really expedite getting those catalogs out! I cannot wait!!

All teachers of painting (whether they have a shop or not), will be asked if they would like to have their infor-mation on a hand out sheet so people can find lessons in their own area. N.E.T. attendees will be able to find a teacher if they want one.

Also, Julie is going to produce a tri-fold about NET that can be placed anywhere to interest folks in NET. It will have a connection to the website so they can connect with someone who is currently with NET no matter when they see the tri-fold.

News from NET

Elaine McMahon will attend the Chapters and Mem-bers Gathering at SDP’s 40th Conference that is be-ing held in Wichita, KS. This event helps different chapters meet and share information and hear educa-tional presentations. This year there the focus will be on ideas to grow and re-vitalize chapters. De-coArt will show their newly re-designed Student Paint Kit and Matthew Clagg, SDP’s Marketing and Communications Coordinator, will provide a busi-ness and marketing plan for chapters who wish to hold beginner painting lessons.

A surprise will be announced by Kitty Bond, SDP Executive Director, at the Annual Meeting on Wed, May 16. Expect to see this news on Facebook and the SDP Blog. It’s going to be FUN!

News from SDP

For the May 6th meeting, would you be willing to bring? • 1 dozen brownies or

cookies • Bowl of tossed salad • Bowl of fruit salad If you are willing to bring one of these items please contact me by April 22nd: via email – [email protected] or phone – 603-863-7863. Thank You, Elaine

Tips ‘N Tricks

Containers with texture material can be easily kept from drying out by stuffing it with a wad of plastic wrap. Poke the plastic into the material squishing out as much air as you can, it is the air trapped in the jar that dries up the product.

(from Peggy Harris on FaceBook) Make sure paper for your wet palette fits the sponge/chamois, etc. EXACTLY. Paper extending beyond the damp sur-face rapidly wicks dryness onto the surface and de-feats the purpose of the wet palette.

Also smooth out any air bubbles under the paper for complete contact of the paper to the damp surface underneath.
