TOLEDO STAMP EXPO ‘20 SHOW SCHEDULE

Wood County is located on land that was once one of the thickest and most dangerous parts of the Great Black Swamp. Native American tribes like Wyandot and Ottawa at times traveled through the area, but they did so only when absolutely necessary. After Battle of Fallen Timbers, land was deeded to Native Americans as part of 1795 Treaty of Greenville. But in 1817 US government purchased it back from Wyandot, Ottawa, Delaware, Potawatomi, Seneca, Shawnee, and Chippewa tribes through the Lower Maumee Treaty.

On February 12, 1820, Ohio Legislature authorized creation of Wood County, along with 13 other counties, on this land. Wood County was named after Colonel Eleazer D. Wood, planning engineer of Fort Meigs. County included area that eventually separated into Lucas County in 1835. Perrysburg was designated County seat in 1822, but changed to a more central location, Bowling Green, in 1868. Bowling Green is also the site of Bowling Green State University.

Settlement was extremely difficult, but extensive system of ditches was developed in order to drain the rich farmland under the swamp. Today, there are still more than 3,000 miles of drainage ditches keep-ing the county dry.

In late 1800s, the first industries came to Wood County when oil and natural gas were discovered. First oil field was located in North Baltimore in 1886, but eventually, oil found in at least 16 townships. The oil and gas boom of the late 1800s caused a huge population increase, as people flocked to the county with the hopes of making it rich. Population of Wood County was 9,157 in 1850, and by early 1900s, it was over 60,000.

Wood County currently covers approximately 620 miles of land and water. It includes nineteen townships, twenty-one villages, and five cities. At the time of the 2010 census the county’s population was just over 125,000, and Bowling Green is currently largest community in county.

The Ohio History Connection operates a museum at Fort Meigs and has rebuilt the fort.

Pomeroy Philatelic Society

2020 marks the 134rd anniversary of Toledo’s first stamp club, the Pomeroy Philatelic Society, estab-lished May 6th, 1886. Successor clubs were the Toledo Philatelic Society, and present Stamp Collec-tors Club of Toledo. Pome-roy Philatelic Society was the second club to join American Philatelic Assn. (later American Philatelic Society) later that same year.

Eleazer Derby Wood (December 1783 – September 17, 1814)

Wood was an American Army officer in War of 1812. Born in Lunenburg, Massachusetts. He was admitted to West Point on May 17, 1805 and graduated on October 30, 1806.

After graduation he was assistant Engineer in construction of defenses at Governor's Island in New York harbor, 1807. In February 1808 he was promoted to First Lieutenant. He assisted in construction of Castle Williams in New York Harbor and Fort Norfolk in Virginia.

On July 1, 1812, shortly after start of War of 1812, he was promoted to captain. He conducted the defenses of Fort Meigs during its siege, was engaged in sortie of May 5, 1813, for which he received a brevet (honorary promotion) to major. He was in command of artillery at battle of the Thames on October 5 in same year. He was appointed acting adjutant-general to General William Henry Harrison in October 1813 and was transferred to the northern army in 1814.

Wood was engaged in all battles of that northern campaign, including the capture of Fort Erie on July 3. Wood was also in battles of Chippawa and Niagara Falls, and was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel for bravery at the Falls.

After battle of Niagara, the American army fell back to Fort Erie where Colonel Wood, in command of 21st Infantry Regiment, participated in defense of fort on August 15, 1814. Colonel Wood died of wounds he received while leading a sortie from Fort Erie on September 17, 1814.

Colonel Wood's burial location is unknown. There is a monument to him in the West Point Cemetery, there is no evidence he is buried there.

Miami and Erie Canal

2020 is 175th anniversary of Miami and Erie Canal a 274-mile waterway running from Toledo to Cincinnati creating a water route from Ohio River to Lake Erie. Construction begun in 1825 was completed in 1845 at a cost to Ohio of $8,062,680.07. At its peak, it included 19 aqueducts, three guard locks, 103 canal locks, multiple feeder canals, and a few man-made water reservoirs. Canal climbed 395 feet above Lake Erie and 513 feet above the Ohio River to a topographical peak called the Loramie Summit, which extended 19 miles between New Bremen to lock 1-S in Lockington, north of Piqua, Ohio. Boats up to 80 feet long were pulled by mules, horses, or oxen walking a towpath along the bank, at a rate of four to five miles per hour. Competition from railroads, beginning in the 1850s, caused commercial use of canal to gradually declined during late 19th century. Permanently abandoned for commercial use in 1913, after a historic flood severely damaged it, only a small fraction of the canal survives today, along with its towpath and locks. Some of the old locks can be seen today at Side

Cut Metro Park. Providence Metro Park, in Grand Rapids, has restored a portion of the canal and you can ride in a canal boat. The Anthony Wayne Trail from Maumee to To-ledo is built over the old canal route.

A cover in honor of Miami-Erie Canal’s 175th Anniversary. It is a reprint of a de-

sign created in 1995 by club member and cachet maker Frank Ellis. Co-vers are available for $2.00 at the club table.
