The landmark symbol of the city was built from 1227 to 1593 on the site of themain Moorish mosque which at the time occupied the site of a West-Gothicchurch. The grand interior boasts 88 rich clustered pillars and the magnificentstained glass pictures dating from the 16th century.

Alczar de Toledo

The Alczar of Toledo is a stone fortification located in the highest part ofToledo, Spain. Once used as a Roman palace in the 3rd century, it wasrestored under Alfonso VI and Alfonso X and renovated in 1535.During theSpanish Civil War, nationalist Colonel Jos Moscard Ituarte held the buildingagainst overwhelming Spanish Republican forces in the Siege of the Alczar.The incident became a central piece of Spanish Nationalist lore especiallythe story of Moscard's son Luis. The Republicans took Moscard's 16-yearold son Luis hostage, and demanded that the Alczar be surrendered or theywould kill him. Luis told his father "Surrender or they will shoot me," his fatherreplied "then commend your soul to God, shout 'Viva Cristo Rey' and dielike a hero. "Moscard refused to surrender. Contemporary reports indicatedthat the republicans then executed Moscard's son. Other historians havereported that Luis was not in fact shot until a month later "in reprisal for an airraid.
