Dear Colleagues
Being part of an organisation that
has undergone dynamic change and
significant growth globally over a short
period has led the leadership team of
Toll Group to call for a clear vision and
shared values to define and nurture
a new one Toll culture. in response,
earlier this year i asked you for your
thoughts and feedback to help shape
our decisions around Toll’s future culture
and values.
i believe there is a significant benefit for
the company in embedding a single Toll
culture that brings together our many
strengths, and exemplifies safety, ethical
behaviour and high performance. For me,
it’s not only what we achieve, but how
we achieve, that’s important.
after discussions involving more than
2,500 people from sites around the
world, the biggest theme that emerged
was that the Toll culture is based on
relationships; employees value the
people they work with and enjoy working
together as one winning team. We also
asked people what we should do in
the future and many said they would
like to see greater communication and
integration. a number of people said that
there were also opportunities for better
cooperation, teamwork and connection
between business units.
For this reason, the feedback affirmed
the focus on one Toll, as it represents
working together as one organisation,
and overcoming geographical and
business unit boundaries.
after extensive research and
conversations throughout the
business, i am thrilled to say that we
have determined what our common
set of values and shared culture
will be. our Values are:
• integrity and Trust
• safety
• Continuous improvement
• Teamwork
• openness and Transparency
There is more to hear about our culture
and beliefs and you will see more of this
in the weeks and months to come.
Next stepsas part of formalising this process,
earlier this month the Group senior
executive Committee (GseC) and
i invited all of the general managers
from across all business units globally
to join us in melbourne for a two day
conference to further develop our new
values framework. on 16 and 17 october,
we were able to come together to talk
about what these values mean to us
and our individual business units and to
decide on the best way to embed these
new values in a collaborative way. This
was an extremely valuable exercise for
the leadership team and i think we have
all come away with and an eagerness to
implement this new values framework
across Toll.
General managers and directors have
begun communicating the Toll Way
and many already have participated in
a launch session in your business to hear
about our beliefs and values and plans for
roll out. if not, rest assured you will
hear soon from your managers’ as
they cascade the message throughout
the businesses.
i look forward to communicating our
new Toll values with you all, together with
GseC and the general managers over
the coming weeks and months. once
this has been done we can move onto
the next phase of the journey to bring
the values to life and personalise them
to each particular business unit. i look
forward to us all having conversations
about what the values mean for us in
our day-to-day work, further unifying
our culture and helping us do things the
right way – the Toll Way.

Investors on tour
The investor relations program here at Toll does this by
giving presentations to investors and also by taking them
on site visits of our facilities. in June this year, we took a group
of 30 analysts, funds and banks to singapore, Hong Kong
and shanghai.
Day one – SingaporeThe trip started off with an introductory presentation into
Toll Global logistics in singapore and China, followed by a
tour of the warehouse that they operate for p&G in singapore.
The group then visited the automotive facility in singapore, and
got to see how the team prepares the cars for the dealerships
in the country.
it was then on to loyang supply base where the Toll Global
resources leadership team introduced the work they do in
singapore and more broadly in australia. The group then took
a tour of the huge supply base which Toll has been renovating
for a number of years.
The significant investment in the regeneration of the loyang
supply base by Toll is naturally of interest to this group. it was
therefore important that we showed them how the project
has developed, the facilities we now have and the number of
tenants from the original oil and gas industry who now have
made loyang their main base in singapore.
loyang is perfectly positioned to support the offshore servicing
needs of the oil and gas fields in the south China sea. it is
our aim that the big companies who support these mining
projects set themselves up in loyang. already many of the big
players have done this as the facilities here are so attractive
and unrivalled elsewhere in the country.
As a listed company, Toll has an obligation to communicate and educate our investors about our business. by doing so, they can come to understand our operations in greater detail and therefore are able to invest in Toll with more confidence.

Day two – Hong KongThe morning started with all of the key management personnel
from Toll Global Forwarding introducing themselves and the
areas they look after. as global forwarding is relatively new
to Toll, the financial community is always interested to see
how we are performing. it was important for them to meet
the management team of experts that we have working in
this space.
Following the presentation, the group visited aTl logistics
Centre – the world’s largest concrete warehouse. Because
space is of a premium in Hong Kong, especially alongside
the river, this ramp up warehouse is a multi-story container
park and warehouse space.
a site to behold, the fully automated container park in the
basement ensures that optimal efficiency is encouraged
at all times. The ramp up warehouse facility allows lots
of businesses to have their warehouses close to the port,
while maximising the use of land.
after getting an insight into sea freight forwarding, the group
went to the airport to see Hong Kong air Cargo Terminals
limited (HaCTl). as one of the busiest airports in the world,
Hong Kong international needs a highly efficient cargo
management system, which is HaCTl.
The sheer scale and size of the operation had the visitors
in awe, before we even discussed how we managed belly
space in the aircraft and managing the challenging issues
around air cargo.
Day three – ShanghaiThe focus of the shanghai tour was to look at the Toll Global
logistics operations and to understand some of the challenges
and opportunities the company has in China.
This was brought to life with site tours around two of the
large warehouses TGl manages for international brands
such as Colgate palmolive, toy manufacturer mattel and
local pharmaceuticals. The visitors learned that the value
added services, the security and safety record TGl maintains,
all add to them becoming preferred logistics partners
for many multinationals who manufacture in China and then
distribute around the world. TGl often partners with TGF to
ensure this happens smoothly.
after the tours and presentations from TGl management,
the visitors were treated to a traditional shanghai dinner
at the Westin on the Bund.
even for these investors who know Toll probably better than
most of us, they were still overwhelmed by the scale and the
many varying tasks we do as a company. They were very
impressed by the knowledge and enthusiasm of our employees,
and with the safety emphasis at each site.
on behalf of the tour group, a huge thank you to the
management and employees who made the tour possible. <

over the last few months there have been a few changes
in the senior management team here at Toll.
Avi Gilboa joined the company recently as the new
group director, strategy and m&a. avi takes over from
Stephen Stanley who announced his retirement in
December 2011. a highly regarded senior merchant banking
professional, avi joins Toll Group after a distinguished career
of nearly 20 years, most recently as australia/new zealand

as well as a new face, there has been an internal promotion
to the senior leadership team. Damain Bishop, group director

Toll is spending up big in Western australia, reinforcing its
industry leading capabilities with a string of unparalleled
infrastructure investments.
more than a$140 million has been spent on major property
investments and upgrades to support our increased focus on
servicing the resource and energy sector, and the growing
demand for its more traditional services.
Current key investments include:
• a$54 million express road freight terminal at Hazelmere
that opened this year
• a$47 million interstate rail freight forwarding terminal in
Kewdale due to open early 2013
• a$30 million from-scratch transport hub for Toll Group
businesses in Gap ridge, Karratha due to open mid-2013
• a$12 million freight terminal upgrade in Kununurra that
opened this year.
The strategic developments are in addition to the more
than 50 sites Toll already operates in Western australia. Toll
Group business development manager Western australia
Jason Holmes said although the combined expenditure for
the four sites is more than a$140 million, the real contribution
to the economy comes in the form of local job creation, and
their flow-on economic effect.
“The fully integrated transport hub we’re building in Karratha
will create around 40 jobs based in Karratha, not fly-in
fly-out,” said Jason.
“But that’s just the beginning. We plan to increase that number
further as we grow our operations and other Toll businesses
start operating out of the site later next year.”
Jason said a continued focus on strategic development
opportunities will see more major developments announced
later in the year to help Toll increase its share of the resource
and energy sector and help Toll’s integrated organic growth
program across its businesses.
“We’ll continue to take a long term strategic approach to
property demand and how best it will service our diverse
and ever-increasing customer base in Western australia. stay
tuned for more investment in the west in future.”
Toll has also recently opened a Group-wide business
development office in perth to help drive its one Toll organic
growth initiative and increasing property development
demand, which should lead to more large-scale projects
being announced this year.
Jason said there were some inherent advantages in
establishing a centralised office that coordinates the immense
resources of Toll’s 17 Western australia-based businesses.
“The new, centralised office helps us service our customers
and enables us to design and implement logistics solutions
that are customised for the resources and energy sectors.” <

Damain bishop, group director, business Development, has been on a national Australian tour promoting a new integrated approach to sales. Damain gives us an update on what this initiative is about.
Damain: as part of the one Toll program, bringing our business
together as a global and well integrated organisation, we are
introducing a one Toll sales strategy across all business units.
To launch this new sales strategy, we recognised that the
best way to deliver this was through empowering our sales
force by educating them on our full one Toll offering. We also
realised that for many of our sales staff, this would be one of
the first times they had met.
The objective of this program is to further develop organic
growth through a formalised process of collaboration / internal
networking, knowledge sharing, and lead generation via
a structured process. i personally attended each of the
conferences around the country to speak to the teams
about harnessing the collective effort of the 600 sales people
currently employed by Toll with our existing 24,000 customers.
our one Toll sales conferences have now been launched in all
states around australia and we plan to launch in new zealand
soon. We will then be assessing how we further promote this
initiative globally. <

The changing nature of the transport
industry in not only meeting our
business commitments, but also the
obligation of managing our carbon
footprint, mean that today’s Toll
customers now want their freight
delivered safely on time at the best price
possible, while also being delivered in
an environmentally responsible way.
Toll Global logistics’ Contract logistics
team is committed to exploring new
technology and business practises
to ensure it can continue to gain
environmental, fuel efficient and cost
effective advantages for our customers.
in a first for Contract logistics, we
are proud to announce the acquisition
of two liquefied natural Gas (lnG)
prime movers (model T409sar), in
conjunction with Kenworth Trucks
and Westport, a leader in natural gas
engines and technology. These two
vehicles have been purchased for use
in our Woolworths Western australia site
at perth airport. The engines in these
vehicles are pilot diesel injected just
prior to auto-ignition of gas injection,
with a ratio of 5 per cent diesel and
95 per cent lnG. The natural gas is
Making a truckload of difference to our carbon footprint
injected at high pressure at the end of
the compression stroke, which means
that air and fuel is not premixed.
lnG is a clear, colourless, non-toxic
liquid that is produced when natural gas
is cooled to minus 161º at atmospheric
pressure. Due to the high density of
lnG in comparison to Compressed
natural Gas (CnG), it is lighter, more
compact and can achieve significant
fuel savings when compared to diesel.
This is especially the case for line
haul B-Double, semi-trailer and road
train vehicles.
These lnG-fuelled engines are the
only heavy duty (HD) engines that are
certified by australian Design rules
(aDr) standard as an aDra80 (euro 5).
Testing on an engine dynamometer
over a sequence of steady-state modes
(idles and weight percentage), show a
25 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas
emissions and a 29 per cent reduction
on the heavy-duty transient cycle
Federal Test procedure (FTp) tested
by australian Greenhouse office Test
program (aDr 80/02 results).
Environmental impact Knowing diesel engines and exhaust
fumes are significant contributors
to air pollution; using an alternative
such as lnG burns cleaner and is an
even better performer than CnG in
reducing emissions. Therefore this is
an environmental initiative that benefits
us all.
The lnG-fuelled Kenworth trucks can
contribute to a considerable reduction in
emissions without sacrificing the power or
torque output needed for our operations.
The introduction of these vehicles to our
fleet is an exciting move towards realising
Toll’s environmental commitment to
reducing our carbon footprint.
The benefits of a lnG-fuelled prime
mover are:
• lnG is comparatively cheaper
than diesel
• lower no2 (nitrogen Dioxide)
emissions and particulate matter
• lnG vehicles are noticeably
quieter to operate
• lnG burns cleaner
• australia has abundant resources
of natural gas. <

more than 75 per cent of Toll employees wear uniforms
in their day-to-day work. These employees are the
face of Toll and directly interact with our customers and the
general public. so as you can imagine, our uniform makes
up a significant part of our brand identity. as part of the new
branding roll out, a single range of uniforms was designed
to unify our people and strengthen our brand.
This project started in late 2010 with a survey which was
conducted globally to establish what the needs were for the
different business units. a uniform committee was established
to source feedback from the businesses and to develop a
uniform range which would not only be practical, but also stand
us apart from the rest. initially there were 12 key garments
identified as essential to our uniform requirements. The
garment list has now grown to over 100 items and two major
suppliers were agreed on to manufacture this full range.
The outcome of the uniform project provides a great example
of what can be achieved when the Toll organisation pools its
resources and tackles projects with a single focus. not only
have we been able to effectively manage the design of a single
uniform catalogue for the Toll Group, the consolidation of the
spend has produced price reductions of up to 48 per cent for
some of our garments, with an estimated saving in uniform
costs across the australian and new zealand businesses
alone of a$1.6 million per annum.
safety was also a key consideration in designing the one
Toll operational range. The australian/new zealand design
standards (as/nz 4602.1:2011) have been applied to the
production of the operational garments (with very slight
modifications required to meet european safety requirements
for our businesses in europe) so Toll Group now has a default
standard for operational clothing across the globe.
The new designs features two primary colours – our Toll
primary green, which is the colour of the Toll logo, and high
visibility orange. The range covers both operational and non-
operational employees around the world. as you may have
seen already, these uniforms have started their roll out across

Toll and Optus launch new site in Western SydneyToll Global Logistics and optus’ relationship strengthened even more this year, with Toll launching the new optus warehouse in April 2012.
optus, australia’s second largest telecommunications
company, and wholly owned subsidiary of singapore
Telecommunications, began their supply chain partnership
with Toll in 2005. This has since grown to cover the entire
supply chain process for optus, including storage, picking
and despatch across the various optus business units. over
time the team has also added extensive value added services
such as kitting and bundling of mobile devices, and reverse
logistics including first level fault validation and assessment.
in march 2011, the Customised solutions team proposed a
new warehouse for optus at yennora in Western sydney, as
stage two of the optus operation. The 10,000sqm warehouse,
which has gone live in a staged process from april to July,
provides optus with increased capacity, and a material
handling equipment solution that will enable Toll to meet the
increasing demands of optus customers whilst reducing
operating costs and improving productivity.
Together, the Toll Group property team and the Customised
solutions team designed and built the new facility in Western
sydney, specifically to meet optus’ requirements. The
warehouse uses Customised solutions’ tier one warehouse
management system, redprairie, that will integrate with
optus’ systems to enable automation of many time consuming
processing and manual paper-based tasks done by the former
warehouse. The site will also provide an optus service centre
using lean processes to create optimised and effective returns
and service areas.
Toll Global logistics’ Customised solutions general manager,
Chris Pearce, said, “This is a great example of a continued

From 31 July – 1 August 2012, Toll Global Logistics (TGL) held its third business development conference in Chennai, India, connecting nearly 60 colleagues across various divisions and business units.
The theme and focus for this year’s conference was about
joining the dots – our people, processes, and capabilities
around the region – a one Toll approach.
Championed by Dominic Rego, director of business
development and supported by Wayne Hunt, president and
Ceo of TGl, the two day conference offered the region’s
business development team the opportunity to better
understand TGl and its strategic vision. The conference was
also a chance to connect names to faces to further leverage
and develop internal networks, and to share best-in-class
practices across the division.
During the two day conference, participants looked at what
they were currently doing and explored what could be done
better. TGl business development also launched its sales-to-
delivery (s2D) process with a focus on providing its business
development colleagues with the tools they need to be more
successful in winning new business. These tools serve as a
standardised platform for TGl — with an aim to develop more
strategic relationships with targeted customers.
prior to the conference, participants had a one day facility tour
to view TGl india’s warehouse operations and capabilities

Wayne kicked off the conference with a welcome speech and
shared TGl’s growth objectives with the team.
The conference was packed with a variety of best-in-class

Celebrating our commitment to safetyin a continuous commitment to improving Toll’s occupational

held to raise awareness around accident prevention and
keeping safety front-of-mind in everything we do at Toll. By
creating a fun and interactive approach to these awareness
events, Toll was able to promote positive attitudes toward

Tata Steel Limited India award Toll with ‘Best innovation of the year’Toll Global logistics in india won a three year contract with
Tata steel limited last year to transport 3,500 tonnes of
steel coils a month from Jamshedpur (in the eastern part of
india) to Chennai and Bangalore (in the southern region of
india), over a distance of around 1,700km.
Tata steel was facing a challenge in transporting wire coils
across india, as the coils were repeatedly getting damaged
in transit due to adverse road conditions. Toll approached
Tata steel to explore the possibility of redesigning trailers
to avoid transit damages. after several design changes to
the trailer, Toll completed a successful trial with one of Tata

TOLL DOMESTIC FORWARDING
in February last year Toll liquids
together with BoC, australia’s leading
gases and engineering company,
designed a training program to further
develop driver skills and maintain
the safety of our driver group as we
continue working in close partnership.
This program was born out of a strong
working relationship between Toll
liquids and BoC over a number of years,
who have the aligned goal to reduce the
risk of driver incidents while transporting
dangerous goods on our roads across
australia every day. This focus led to the
introduction of stability control training
(also known as rollover prevention
training) as a mandatory requirement
for all drivers working on the Bulk BoC
contract. This alone was a milestone in
the industry, putting us at the forefront
of safety for many trucking companies
in australia and new zealand.
This revolutionary training program is
presented in two parts, with theory
and practical elements developed by
DeCa Training at shepparton, Victoria.
This training is designed to increase the
drivers’ awareness of the real possibility
that a rollover can occur at any time
during a normal day at work. as part of
attending the on-site course they have
the opportunity to be involved in actual
real life situations where they simulate a
tanker rolling. They learn that the speed
differential between a near rollover and
an actual rollover is only a couple of
kilometres apart.
The second part of this highly valuable
training program is to demonstrate the
value that electronic Braking system
(eBs) adds to the safety of our tankers.
BoC fitted all of its tankers with eBs,
which helps to assist the drivers from
rolling over in critical situations – this
can become a very real concern to the
driver simply by driving down a winding
road with a full load. as the tankers
are carrying a product that is liquefied
under pressure, meaning that there is
ullage (room for the product to move) in
the tank, allowing the load to move as
the driver travels along. Therefore the
centre of gravity is forever changing as
the load shifts, increasing the risk of a
potential rollover. Drivers can feel an
increased sense of security knowing
there are safety procedures already in
place with this eBs equipment when it
is fitted in the trailers they tow.
This training has not only provided
valuable safety knowledge and
awareness, but also allowed drivers to
meet and share experiences with their
fellow interstate colleagues, building
greater relationships within the Toll
and BoC families. at this point in time
around 80 per cent of the driver group
has attended the course and feedback
has been very positive. The remaining
drivers are very keen to undertake the
experience in the future. Toll liquids
aims to reach its target goal of 100 per
cent participation by the end of
December 2012 for all drivers including
casual drivers and the Toll contract
on-site managers.
Toll liquids general manager, Tim Kehoe
said, “Toll liquids’ commitment to this
safety initiative is yet another example
of how we are continually striving to
provide a safer working environment
for our employees, customers and
community.” <

Toll NQX was proudly represented at the inaugural ‘Women in road Transport’ event held by the Queensland Trucking Association with the theme of how gender diversity is moving the road transport industry forward.
emma Smith, training coordinator at nqX College, was
invited to give an address along with queensland Trucking

Roz Shaw.
emma inspired an audience of over 120 people as she talked
about her own career journey and her passion to guide others
as they contemplate a career within the transport industry.
after starting as the lead receptionist for Toll north, emma
realised she wanted to advance further in the industry. using
some wise words of advice from her mum, she focussed on

To boost the funds raised even more this year, the team

Toll volunteers gave up their saturday to devote their time to

A few issues ago, Toll mining Services explained in Toll Today the work they had undertaken with barrick (Australia pacific) in papua New Guinea (pNG) to promote the safe handling and transportation of cyanide. The team has since gone on to secure the supply of transport and logistics services for the route between port of Lae and the barrick Gold mine in porgera.
To supply the required services, an extensive preparation
and development process was undertaken to achieve
compliance to the international Cyanide management
Code. This code is a voluntary program for the gold mining
industry that promotes responsible cyanide management,
enhanced protection of human health and reduces potential
environmental impacts.
on 27 February, Toll was formally certified as code
compliant, meeting all aspects of the international Cyanide
management Code.
a key challenge to the operation has been safely transporting
the goods along the Highlands Highway between lae, Goroka,
mount Hagen and porgera in the western highlands of pnG.
This is the only route available so the challenges of landslips,
washaways, tribal clashes, attacks on convoys, and vehicle
breakdowns are all recurring issues which must be dealt
with. indeed, all these aspects have become a ‘normal’ part
of the operations.
To date, Toll mining services in pnG has moved 235 containers
of dangerous goods which are necessary for the Barrick
Gold mining operation in porgera to receive on schedule to
continue operations. With this strong foundation and proven
experience in difficult conditions, Toll is now well positioned
to secure future work in the pnG region.
The project teamThe project was headed by Tol Kouz, the Toll mining services
north regional manager, with Peter Gauci appointed the
business manager for Toll mining services in pnG, once the
project was approved. peter has taken the lead on the project
setting up the contractual and financial aspects to ensure a
smooth transition.
Grant Johansen was appointed as operations manager located
in lae, pnG. Grant worked closely with Sheena Ward, the
compliance coordinator, to set up the local procedures and
risk assessments associated with gaining the accreditation.
Toll is now well established, with local operations managed
by Grant Johansen employing three local staff. operations
supervisors Warren Teno and Manu Gairo are responsible for

Toll remote logistics provides airport management, ground
handling and security screening services in remote and
regional airports around australia and overseas.
Whereas Toll dnata represents one of the leading providers
of airport services at large international airports, Toll remote
logistics is finding that there are increasing opportunities
in smaller scale remote and regional locations. and these
opportunities go far beyond the airports themselves, as the
entry point for new operations they are strategic footholds that
can enable other areas of Toll to gain access to new markets
in emerging locations.
Toll remote logistics is being increasingly sought out to
provide these services due to its ability to deliver international
best-practice solutions combined with a can-do attitude that
allows them to overcome the unique challenges of working in
remote locations. This enables Toll remote logistics to roll out
airport services in any location in the world, a fact reflected
in their current operations.
They currently manage two of the world’s most remote airports
in Christmas and Cocos islands, as well as providing airport
services in one of the world’s newest countries in Timor leste.
in addition to this, Toll remote logistics was recently awarded
the contract to take over the operations and management
of three Bm alliance Coal operations (Bma) airports in the
Bowen Basin in queensland.
Toll remote logistics’ range of airport services includes:
• Airport operations and management – making sure every
aspect of the airport runs smoothly, efficiently and safely and
in compliance with all relevant aviation authorities.
Airport services helping to land new opportunities for Toll
• Ground handling – providing personnel and equipment to
ensure that people and luggage make it to the right place
at the right time to keep flights on schedule.
• Security services – an approved aviation screening authority
providing screening and security support services.
in short, any services required to operate and manage an
airport, Toll remote logistics can deliver.
While the airport business is attractive in itself, its broader
potential lies in having a strong Toll presence and a strategic
foothold at the entry point for new operations, particularly in
the mining and resources sectors. This represents an excellent
opportunity to identify and pursue new business opportunities
for the wider Toll Group.

ABOVEpipes being prepared for transport at the port of Brisbane.
BELOWusing innovative practises to move pre-bundled pipe onto rail.
In our last issue, Toll Global resources explained the work that had started on the Queensland Curtis LNG (QCLNG) project. This project is now well underway as it reaches a new phase of implementation.
Toll energy, part of Toll’s Global resources division, is
providing the transportation and storage of materials
required to complete the project’s upstream requirements. in
particular, Toll is providing the logistics for the large shipments
of around 14,600 pieces of 18m pipe at Brisbane Wharf. This
pipe forms the critical trunkline which connects the numerous
field compression stations to the central compression stations.
This allows the gas to then be pumped down the major pipeline
linking the fields with the lnG plants, where it is liquefied and
shipped to customers across the globe.
The qClnG trunkline pipe will form around 260km of pipeline
and is predominately 18m lengths, with around 200 pipe bends,
with diameters from 300mm to 600mm. at this stage, more
than half of the welds have been completed on what will be the
longest, large-diameter onshore buried pipeline in australia.
Toll and the project have used innovative practices to move
the pre-bundled pipe onto rail at the port of Brisbane. The
use of rail has considerably reduced the impact of road traffic
on the already congested Warrego Highway, which services
enormous volumes of freight being transported along this key
arterial into the surat Basin.
David Jackson, Ceo Toll Global resources expressed how
excited Toll is to be part of some of australia’s largest capital
infrastructure projects. David said, “These projects have
allowed Toll to demonstrate to queensland and beyond the
superior logistics solutions we have to offer. Toll is delighted
with the opportunity to help deliver this crucial service to such
an important project, and prove yet again the end-to-end
capabilities we can provide to the resource sector in australia
and around the world.”
The qClnG contract is the third major contract Toll’s Global
resources division has been successful in securing from
proponents involved with queensland’s lnG developments
on Curtis island, and Toll looks forward to getting involved in
similar projects in future. <

Toll Global Forwarding (TGF) has recently relocated its fledgling estonia branch to new premises in the historic Kadriorg park area of Tallinn, estonia’s capital.
looking more like a stately home than a forwarding office,
TGF estonia’s new base now has foreign embassies and
the palace of the estonian president as near neighbours.
located 8km from the city’s lennart meri international airport
and around 25km from the sea port of Tallinn at muuga, the
office is the administrative base for a fast-growing business
that currently centres on ocean freight and value-added
services such as warehousing, and pick and pack. The TGF
estonia business has been steadily growing month by month
right from day one, hence the need for a larger office with the
increasing demand for our services in the region.
launched only in november 2010, as a satellite to the
simultaneously-opened Finnish office, TGF estonia is currently
more slanted to exports – but this is expected to balance out
in due course. although it operates under TGF Finland, all
traffic is routed directly into and out of estonia.
TGF Estonia moves offices to cope with increased demand
Branch manager Kristian Palts, a former key account manager
at schenker thinks the move to estonia is a positive step
forward for the business. He said, “Having an office in estonia
enables us to handle shipments for all three Baltic states. many
of our large customers have traffic to or from Finland, latvia
and lithuania. The Baltic states also act as trans-shipment
gateways for imports to russia – so we expect more imports
business as we grow.”
TGF Finland itself also acts as a base for russian traffic,
in addition to its own business.
Toll’s estonian operation already ranks in the top three for
the country’s exports of peat moss, plastic and glass scrap.
and the future is bright according to Kristian, “The plan is
to further increase our market share and become an even
stronger player in all areas. eventually, we want to be in all
three Baltic states with our own offices.”

were set a mighty challenge when they were presented with
a cargo project that involved handling the import, clearance
and transportation of eight pieces of winch at 34 tons

swiber is a world class integrated construction and support
services provider to the offshore oil and gas industry, offering a
wide range of offshore engineering, procurement, construction,
installation, marine and diving support services across the
asia pacific and the middle east region.
Due to the oversized nature of the cargo, special cranes and
trailers had to be used for road deliveries to the shipyard
which needed to be done at night with escort assistance
from the traffic police. The dimensions of these oversized
cargoes were l5.33m x W3.95m x H3.265m weighing in at

Handling a 270 ton cargo project – a breeze for TGF Singapore
in the first week of July, Toll Global Forwarding (TGF) brought
together 13 representative colleagues from around the globe
for a three day workshop held in Hong Kong on ‘collaboration’,
facilitated by Bridge Consulting, who also supports us with
leadership@Toll.
The group was posed with a seemingly simple question
– “How do we improve the levels of collaboration between
origin and destination?” The Hong Kong 13 as they’ve
christened themselves, went about the challenge with
energy, focus and genuine passion, and came up with a
set of recommendations that are genuinely inspiring.
They delivered their recommendations around the
‘TGF Way’ under three headings:
1. In TGF we trust – Building a global community and
creating the global family through such things as staff surveys,
employee recognition programs, photo competitions, global
newsletters, roll out of Toll branding, an international exchange
program and a global induction program.
2. All together now – one global system with standard global
processes making life simpler, more consistent, and creating
time for other value-add activities.
3. Treasure chest – empowering TGF people by, for example,
building an information portal that gives all employees
easy access to all the information they need to do their job
effectively, with a strong focus on ongoing training and
development activity.
action plans for the first 100 days, and thereafter, are being
developed by the Hong Kong 13 in close consultation with
Hugh Cushing, Ceo TGF, who will provide the ongoing
sponsorship and leadership to the team and ensure maximum
business impact from this highly motivational initiative. <

TOLL GLOBAL FORWARDING
earlier this year Toll Global Forwarding in the americas
held its first ever Toll latin america conference in
miami, Florida.
This flagship event was an opportunity to invite our primary
business partners from across eight key latin american
countries to showcase our capabilities within the region.
The event had global reach, with Toll management
representatives invited from around the world to cover the
main economies doing business with latin america. some of
the top international executives who attended the conference
included, Paul Coutts, group products, marketing and sales
director, Eric Pilling, global head of sales, Corey Mahjoubian,
director global air freight, Hakan Bicil, managing director
europe, Gerd Kux, head of sales europe and Quint Wilken,
head of sales perishables logistics europe. and of course
the entire TGF americas management team attended under
the leadership of the regions Ceo, Myles O’Brien. The event
was organised by Chris Stocker, regional vice president for
latin america, who is responsible for coordinating all global
efforts related to latin america.
The conference agenda was divided over three days from
9 – 11 may. The first day commenced with an overview of
Toll’s global activities and an outlook of our strategy for
the upcoming years. This was followed by introductions to
the latin american companies, outlining opportunities for
business development with the Toll Group. The opening day
was concluded with very informative presentations by two
of our main carriers, Hapag lloyd and lan airlines, sharing
first hand their expectations from an air and ocean freight
carrier perspective.
The second day focused exclusively on sales and business
development. Toll conducted intense 30 minute bilateral
meeting sessions where Toll representatives, divided into
eight teams met individually with our latin american partners.
The objective was to identify business opportunities and set
the stage for future development projects.
The final day of the conference concentrated solely on
perishables logistics. latin america is one of the world’s
major producers of fruits, vegetables, meats and fish, which
are mainly exported to the us, europe and asia. most of the
attending agents already employ dedicated staff exclusively
for servicing the perishable sector. This session sparked a
lively discussion on the opportunities and challenges each
of the countries are currently facing in this sector. as an
outcome, several initiatives were already launched that day.
The growth of this business is expected to be consistent over
the years to come.
The overall event was a resounding success, with very
positive feedback received from the different participants.
The conference allowed all parties to not only learn more
about our global organisation, but also about the fantastic
opportunities of growth for Toll in latin america. a follow
on meeting is expected to be held next year to ensure there
is momentum on the agreements that came out of the
conference and to further increase our market share in this
prosperous part of the world. <

The past year and a half have been particularly difficult
for our colleagues in Christchurch, new zealand, after
enduring the major earthquakes that have hit the Christchurch
region since september 2010.
Despite a very stressful year in 2011 however, the branch’s
trading managed to exceed budget, which came down to
employees continuing to provide a high standard of service
to all our clients during a difficult time. Toll employees went
beyond the call of duty to help handle the unloading of more
than 4,750 charter aircraft flights of chemical toilets, two of
which had to be unloaded at 3am.
Steve McKenzie, TGF Christchurch branch manager said, “We
all hope that the earthquakes slowly decrease in frequency
which will enable the CBD of Christchurch to re-open and
the rebuild of our city can begin. The economic growth for
Christchurch is predicted to increase dramatically from the
end of this year and Toll Global Forwarding Christchurch is

Intelligent Banknote Neutralisation System for Toll Secure’s customers
We have recently taken delivery of our first vehicles fitted
with technology that will revolutionise the current
methods of CiT in australia.
Toll secure has purchased intelligent Banknote neutralisation
system (iBns) technology for servicing clients in the financial
and retail sectors. This technology provides ink dye protection
for cash in transit within the currency transport cases and
automatic Teller machine (aTm) cassettes. This system is
able to identify unauthorised access to the cash in transit
and activates the dye which permeates the notes rendering
them unusable in this event.
The iBns technology has been enhanced by our partner,
secure Transport systems (sTs) with Gps tracking of vehicles
and cash transport cases, real time CCTV coverage within
vehicles and audible alarm cases.
By rendering cash worthless in the event of a robbery, iBns
technology greatly reduces the risk profile of cash logistics.
implementation of this technology in europe has significantly
reduced aTm and CiT attacks. it should be noted that use
of iBns technology by CiT operators is legislated in sweden,
Finland and Belgium. Toll is the first to bring this innovation
to australia. The technology introduced by Toll secure has
been in operation for 10 years and is a proven CiT solution.
Further benefits of iBns technology include:
• reduced need for armed personnel
• increased safety for CiT personnel, client staff
and the general public
• reduced risk profile
• improved productivity and efficiency.
The armoured vehicles Toll secure is introducing to the fleet
transport the cash in a smart racking system integrated
with iBns technology. The smart racking features a locking
mechanism for cases in transport, with a shear point on the
case handles to prevent unauthorised removal. if the vehicle
comes under attack, the ink dye system can be remotely
activated within the racking system.
Vehicles are constructed with specialist composite ceramic
and lightweight super hard steel materials. This material is
lighter and stronger than the materials traditionally used in
the CiT industry. The technology we are implementing has,
to date, been unavailable anywhere in the asia pacific region.
Toll secure’s advanced approach will meet strict security
standards whilst being more economical and eco-friendly
than vehicles traditionally used in the CiT industry. Vehicles
have been tested and comply with the as/nzs2343-1997
australian and new zealand standard to suit the australian
security and banking industry.
David Medhurst, general manager of Toll secure says,
“Toll secure’s customers will benefit from an unprecedented
level of technology, safety and service for cash logistics.” <

Toll Global Forwarding’s united arab emirates (uae)
operations has called on all keen cricketing colleagues
to form their own Toll cricket team, Toll uae Xi, resplendent
in company colours.
Toll uae Xi recently played in its first local competition at the
logistics Tournament, which takes place twice-yearly and
involves teams from airlines, shipping lines and other freight
forwarders based in the uae.
Toll made a strong start, only narrowly missing a place in
the second round after only just losing to reliance Freight
by two runs, and were defeated by mediterranean shipping
Company (msC) by one wicket. The team continues to get
its practice in when it can and is looking forward to its next
competition later this year.

re: Saved by the Toll TruckiesTuesday, 26 June 2012 10:04 PM Mark
On Friday 22 June at around 8pm on North West Coastal Highway, Geraldton, I was driving home in my old station wagon from the vets, crying uncontrollably, due to the loss of my recently euthanised 14-year-old dalmatian, who I was carting home to bury.
Unbelievably, I got a flat tyre and had to pull over into a BP petrol station to change it. At that point I very shakily and tearily lifted my old dog out of the way to get the spare out, and then had my two-year-old daughter also in the car crying while I attempted to position the jack and raise the car and undo the wheelnuts.
Frustrated and sad, I noticed a couple of Toll truckies walking out of the service station who asked if they could help me with the wheelnuts (which in my emotional state I was attempting to undo in the incorrect direction). They were on their return trip to Perth and probably on a deadline, but without any hesitation or fussing, they had soon enough changed the tyre for me while I comforted my daughter. In my state, I didn’t even remember to get their names to say thank you. So, if you can pass on my sincere thanks to the two men, I’d really appreciate it.
Yours sincerely, Sue Phillips

Toll in Western australia held its biannual fundraising BBq
for the local Jetz netball Club at the langford sports
Complex to help the players raise funds to keep their organised
sports participation costs down.
organised sport is often expensive with the cost of uniforms,
court fees, umpire fees and association fees, make it extremely
difficult for struggling families to afford what should not be
deemed a luxury item.
Toll and the Jetz netball Club teamed up two years ago to
assist in raising funds to go towards uniform and fee costs
being kept to a minimum for what was a small start-up netball
club in the southern suburbs of perth. Toll was interested
in exploring other ways to contribute and support the club
instead of just a monetary donation each year. With a number
of Toll employees, suppliers and customers involved at the
local netball centre, the group put their heads together to find
ways to reduce costs for key items:
• Toll Intermodal – assisted in producing marketing signs
to advertise Toll people as a career contact option for the
transport industry
• Toll people and Toll Global express – assisted in cost
with uniforms
• Toll Fleet – supplied a purpose built trailer BBq for the
club to hold a sausage sizzle for further fundraising
• Toll IpeC – assisted in subsidising team shirts.
most importantly the Toll business units all chipped in to share
the cooking load when it was time to hold the BBq.
Toll sponsorship gives local netball club a leg up
The efforts so far have helped to raise the equivalent of a$2,000
per annum in revenue or cost savings that would normally
need to be passed onto the mums and dads via club fees.
The fundraising BBq was attended by well over 200 people
on the night and directly raised more than a$500 in gold
coin donations. Thank you to Michael Cosmelli, Geoff Hogan,
Jason Holmes and Roy Thomas who volunteered their time
to cook up a storm on the night.
The Jetz netball Club is one of the fastest growing netball
clubs in the state.
every player receives a uniform, club jacket and warm up shirt
which proudly displays the new Toll brand for all to see. With
over 210 players, umpires, coaches and club officials, that’s
over 600 little Toll logos running around every saturday. This
sponsorship provides Toll brand great exposure across a broad
range of people and organisations in the region.
Toll is extremely proud of its involvement with this family
orientated sporting club and we look forward to many more
years of success. Go the Jetz! <

team, dubbed ‘Toll united’ to participate
in the queensland Corporate Games.
The games have been held annually
since 2000 and bring companies
and other organisations together for
friendly competition. The corporate
games raise money for the australian
Cancer research Foundation which is
the leading private funder of world-class
cancer research projects in the country.
The Toll priority team has for the past
two years competed in the open men’s
soccer, taking home the Championship
in 2011 with six straight wins and only
two goals scored against them.
This year the team got off to a rocky
start, and lost 2-0 in their opening match.
after that, the team rallied to win their
final two matches with no further goals
scored against them. not prepared to be
defeated in 2013 the team has already
begun training and hope to win back
the championship.

from Toll priority in Townsville
raised a$500 for ‘Give me 5 for Kids’
fundraising campaign.
The campaign raises money for local

helping seriously ill children.
on 8 June, local Townsville radio station

drive. Mark Weidling, the local branch
manager, graciously obliged. The team

STAFF MILESTONES
if you have reached a service milestone that you are proud of, or are celebrating the achievements of your team members, please let us know so
we can include your story on the staff milestone celebrations page. email: [email protected]
peter broadbent is one of the lucky ones. From an early age he knew what his passion was and didn’t waste any time getting into the industry that would become his life-long job.
at the spritely young age of 15, peter joined the transport
industry and 50 years on he is still doing what he loves.
peter started his first job in 1962 as a trolley boy at rudders
Transport (which had been acquired by TnT in 1961) in the
Brisbane inner suburb of Fairfield, not far from the infamous
Boggo road jail.
Jump forward to 1967, peter left his job at TnT and went to
work at all Trans Truck & spares. However as fate would have
it, soon after he joined, all Trans amalgamated with TnT in the
same year and the combined companies became TnT ltd –
so peter was back in the company where he had started.
after holding a number of roles within TnT over the next
10 years, in 1977 peter started working on the container
forklifts (35 years on he still does this very job).
on the work front things remained stable for peter for the
next 21 years until 1998 when TnT Container express was
bought out by Toll and became part of Toll spD. This meant
another move for peter, but this time to the Brisbane suburb
of acacia ridge.
in early 2011 the Toll spD and Toll qrX businesses merged so
peter officially became a Toll intermodal employee, still based
at acacia ridge and still driving the big forklift.
50 years in the business and peter Broadbent says:
“There’s nothing I don’t like about my job”
on his 45 year anniversary, peter said the best thing about
his job was, “i get to work autonomously – there’s a lot of
independence” and the worst, “nothing really, there’s nothing
i don’t like about my job, i can’t think of anything else i’d
rather do.”
Five years on, we asked peter if this still applies? He said,
“i still enjoy my job, it’s a nice, easy job and i get paid to do it
every day, it’s great.”
after 50 years of work, what does the future hold for peter?
peter said, “i’m looking forward to retiring, dragging the
waders out and going fishing whenever i want to.” peter and
his wife Jackie are planning on doing some travelling when he
can manage to pull himself away from his home – there’s five
acres and a house to look after there, so that keeps him busy.
peter has been a loyal, dedicated employee for the past
50 years. management and employees at Toll intermodal
would like to congratulate him on his service and commitment
to his job and thank him for his hard work over the years.
We wish him and Jackie all the very best for the future. <
ABOVE peter broadbent receives his 50 year certificate at a special presentation to mark the occasion.
RIGHT looking back over 50 years of great service, congratulations again peter.
