The Mysteries of GodMaurice Roberts

description . . . .

Many vital truths are given to us in the Bible that lead us to a vastly greater understanding of Him than the most intelligent heathen with-out a Bible could ever know. We refer to these truths as mysteries, not because man has invented this term, but because it is the word that God Himself has chosen to inform us of His wonderful way of salvation. In The Mysteries of God, author Maurice Roberts reminds us that it is important that we be thoroughly informed about God’s mysteries because they are His eternal purposes by which He has given Christ to be our Savior; understanding and believing them give us eternal life with God in the glory of heaven.

endorsements . . . .“When Rev. Maurice Roberts puts pen to paper, a classic is in the mak-ing. One dear Christian I know reads only Octavius Winslow, Horatius Bonar, and Maurice Roberts because, in his words, ‘I fi nd spiritual profi t on every page.’ Rev. Roberts is known to combine simplicity, profundity, and clarity, all of which are certainly requisite for any treatment of Bible mysteries. This book is so insightful, well-ordered, and helpful, it seems hard to imagine Christian readers have been without it for so long.” —Gerald M. Bilkes, professor of New Testament at

Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

Keeping the HeartJohn Flavel

description . . . .

Proverbs 4:23 says to “keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life.” We are to guard our heart as if it was a fortress under attack, for, indeed, it is. How diligently a man will guard his for-tune and his home, which are of temporal value; but how carelessly do most men guard that which is of eternal value, their very soul!

In this work, originally entitled A Saint Indeed, John Flavel looks at what it is to keep the heart, how the heart is to be kept, and why keep-ing the heart is the greatest business of every person.

It includes a helpful introduction, detailed outline, and study guide written by Maureen Bradley, making this an excellent book for study groups.

endorsements . . . .“you are holding in your hands the heartbeat of Puritan pastoral ministry and Christian spirituality—John Flavel’s plea to his con-gregation to guard their hearts from sin and keep it for Christ. This book is warm theology wed with wise advice on practical living from how to deal with prosperity or poverty, anger or abuse, sin or the sanctifying providences of suff ering. When you read Flavel, open not only your heart, but also your Bible and learn from one of the most well-read pastors during his time in both Old and New england.” — Adam Embry

about the author. . . .Born near Birmingham, england, JOHN FlaVel (1627–1691) was educated at the university College, Oxford. In 1650, he was ordained as a Presbyterian at Diptford, a parish on the avon in Devonshire. In 1655 he removed to Dartmouth. On the passing of the act of unifor-mity in 1662, Flavel was ejected from his church as a Nonconformist, but he continued to preach until the passing of the Five Mile act in 1665 forced him to cease from this ministry. Thereupon he moved to Slapton, fi ve miles away, where he preached to all who desired to hear him. When the fi rst Indulgence was proclaimed by King Charles II in 1672, Flavel returned to Dartmouth. This indulgence was can-celed the next year, whereupon Flavel went to london, but soon returned to Dartmouth where he conducted services in his own house. When King James II issued his indulgence in 1687, a meeting house was erected for Flavel. —Taken from Palmer’s Non-Conformist Memorial

In Remembrance of Him:Profi ting from the lord’s SupperGuilelmus Saldenus and Wilhelmus à BrakelTranslated by Bartel ElshoutEdited by James A. De Jong

description . . . .

The two seventeenth-century essays translated and off ered in this book were originally designed to help people of the Dutch Further Reformation derive the greatest benefi t from celebrat-ing the lord’s Supper. Guilelmus Saldenus’s The Effi cacy of the Lord’s Supper concentrates on the joy received in celebrating the sacra-ment and the sanctifi ed living that it ought to generate. Wilhelmus à Brakel’s Edifying Discourses instructs believers in preparing their hearts for the celebration, participating in the Supper responsibly, and following up the meal in a spiritually benefi cial manner. These contributions are but two examples of a much larger genre of edify-ing lord’s Supper literature that developed in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century.

endorsements . . . .“In the fi ne translations made available here, one sees the ecumeni-cal nature of Reformed spirituality and the close relationship between the church and true believers. The sources of the Further Reformation deserve greater recognition. The heritage of Reformed Protestantism contains hidden treasures for which we in our modern era should be grateful and of which we could make use with profi t.”

—Willem van ’t Spijker, Theological University of Apeldoorn

“I am delighted that the Dutch Reformed Translation Society is at last making this material available in the english language. It is a land-mark feature of our Reformed heritage, and it is rich food for the soul in this or any other age.” — J. I. Packer, Regent College

“Many will surely welcome this new access to the Dutch authors whose strong writings put faith and certainty into generations of their fellow countrymen. By their closeness to Scripture and their concern for heart and head (heat and light), they remain of enduring value.” — Iain H. Murray, author of The Puritan Hope

The Duties of Parents is the best-known work of Dutch Further Reformation leader Jacobus Koelman. He describes the need for good schools and teach-ers and encourages teachers to realize their great responsibility. The Duties of Parents gives readers an important glimpse of the theological and practical concerns of the developing Protestant tradition. Practical application abounds for raising children today as well.

Translated by Peter Y. De Jong, Edited by James A. De Jong

description . . . .

First published in 1585, Jean Taffin’s The Marks of God’s Children became an instant classic in Dutch and French Reformed circles. Taffin offers comfort and encouragement to those engaged in spiritual warfare through the doctrine of assurance, giving special attention to the role of suffering in the life of a Christian. Grounded in Reformed confessional orthodoxy, this spiritual reflection provides an astute understanding of the “marks” of God’s grace and salvation that is still relevant today.

description . . . .

First published in 1646, Spiritual Desertion offers comfort and consolation to believers whose circumstances cause them to wonder if God has abandoned them. Further Reformation leaders Gisbertus Voetius and Johannes Hoornbeeck demonstrate that the anxiety of doubting believers is proof that God has not abandoned them; rather, it is evidence of the work of the Spirit in their hearts.

The 17:18 Series (Journibles)Rob Wynalda

why the 17:18 series?. . . .In Deuteronomy 17, Moses is leaving fi nal instructions concerning the future of Israel. as a prophet of God, Moses foretells of when Israel will place a king over the nation (v. 14). In verse 18, the king is commanded to not simply acquire a copy of the law (the entire book of Deu-teronomy) from the “scroll publishing house,” but to hand write his own copy of the law.

Thirty-four hundred years later, educators are “discovering” that students that physically write out their notes by hand have a much greater retention rate than simply hearing or visu-ally reading the information. apparently, God knew this to be true of the kings of Israel also. From such understanding came the conception of this series of books.

how to use these books . . . .each book is organized so that you can write out your very own copy of Scripture. you will be writing the Bible text only on the right hand page of the book. This should make for easier writing and also allows ample space on the left page to write your own notes and comments. From time to time a question or word will be lightly printed on the left page; these questions are to aid in further study, but should not interfere with your own notes and comments.

endorsements . . . .“There is an old proverb that says ‘Thoughts disentangle themselves when passing over the lips and through the fi nger tips.’ The 17:18 Series which encourages us to actually write out the words of Scripture will be a tremendous tool in putting that proverb into action in our daily lives. I am happy to commend this project. — Jerry Bridges, author of The Pursuit of Holiness

“Several years ago I read an article about copying the Scriptures by hand. I tried it with the Pastoral epistles, writing out all three books with a fountain pen in my journal, and found it a profi table exercise. I am glad to see this series of journals appear, and I hope they are widely used.” — Donald S. Whitney, Associate Professor of Biblical Spirituality,

The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville

Feasting with Christ:Meditations on the lord’s SupperCompiled and edited by Joel Beeke and Paul Smalley

description . . . .

The lord’s Supper is more than a ritual. It is an invitation to exercise our faith in Christ crucified for our sins. Behind the simplicity of the bread and the cup we discover the riches of the gospel. Sadly, Christians too often rush into this sacred act with little reflection. But spiritual writers of former centuries left us a rich devotional legacy that unveils the glory of Christ in the Supper. In this book, over sixty short devo-tional readings and prayers from over forty authors carry the reader from preparation to celebration to reflection. you might jump in to sample a few selections by people like Richard Sibbes, John Flavel, or Wilhelmus à Brakel, or read it straight through in the weeks before and after partaking. By the time you reach the end, you will discover that this book isn’t just about the lord’s Supper. It’s about drawing near to a covenant God through Jesus Christ.

endorsements . . . .“This delightful book helps inform our minds and warm our hearts so that we may come to the lord’s Supper with an eager readiness to see Christ Himself and His saving work. It helps us come with prayer to the Holy Spirit that He may use these humble means, bread and wine, which Christ has chosen, over which He is lord, for our soul’s good. We come in a spirit of humble devotion expecting and receiv-ing the grace God gives so willingly to obedient, longing hearts. We prepare by reading these high devotional comments on the Supper. What a help they are, and yet our experience of the grace of the Sup-per always exceeds our best attempts at understanding the blessed ordinance, because our Saviour deals with us more graciously in this word and sacrament than we can ever deserve or even desire.” — Geoff Thomas, Pastor of Alfred Place Baptist Church

in Aberystwyth, Wales

“Imagine if Christians were to prepare for the lord’s Supper by reading devotionals such as these on Saturday evening. These devotionals are soul-refreshing aids to ensure true spiritual communion with Christ as Christians put their feet under the lord’s Table and feast. Why have we not had such a book before now? One of the most helpful books I have read in recent times.”

— Derek W. H. Thomas, Minister of Preaching and Teaching, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, S.C., and

Professor of Systematic Theology, RTS Atlanta

“Many words have been written about who should take the lord’s Supper, how often we should take the lord’s Supper, and other technical questions. Here, at last, we have a book on the lord of the Supper and how to feast upon Him.”

. . . .New TitleWhat is evangelicalism?Joel R. Beeke

endorsements . . . .“This is a clarion call to evangelicals to consider their ways. Joel Beeke writes against a widespread evangelical identity crisis. Con-fusion over the meaning of the term is causing some to give up identifying themselves as evangelicals, while others insist that any attempt to delineate the boundaries of evangelicalism should be abandoned. Dr. Beeke accepts as evangelical those brothers who accept the authority of Scripture, trust only in the lord Jesus Christ as Savior and believe that the historic reality of Christ’s atoning death and resurrection provide the only hope of salvation. Dan-ger arises when there is no real understanding of such doctrines. He urges definition of the great truths of the gospel and insists that a heartfelt knowledge is vital to the health of biblical Christi-anity. To achieve this he pleads that those who profess the name of evangelical return to their roots and consider the writings of the teachers of historic orthodoxy; by doing this they will not only enrich themselves and their churches, but they will promote a true evangelical unity. This earnest appeal is warmly recommended.”

— Robert Oliver, Faculty member for Church History and Historical Theology, London Theological Seminary

“To use or (no longer) to use the term ‘evangelical’ is indeed a ques-tion! By reviewing its past and present (mis) uses Joel Beeke shows clearly that the question needs to be both asked and answered. He argues forcefully and movingly that the term should be pre-served in its original content and its authentic spirit. This little book deserves a wide readership and serious reflection.”

— Hywel Jones, Professor of Practical Theology, Westminster Seminary, California

“at a ministers’ fraternal a young pastor described how he took a stepladder and climbed up to the notice board of his church and deleted the word ‘evangelical’ because he maintained that the term has become so wide that it no longer means anything. an experienced pastor present reproved him and told him to go and fetch that stepladder and restore the word ‘evangelical’ because ‘evangelical’ has a long and rich meaning which we must always defend and continue to define. This is exactly what Joel Beeke does for us. He explains how ‘evangelical’ can be watered down, and warns us of the inadequacy of minimal statements of faith. He exposes the fallacy that Roman Catholics are evangelical. He shows that we must never leave the sixteenth century Reforma-tion heritage out of our evangelicalism. I heartily commend What is Evangelicalism? It is informative, highly relevant and written in a challenging, pithy style.’”

During the years 1643 to 1648, the Westminster assembly published over twenty-five documents, most notably the Confes-sion of Faith, the larger and Shorter Catechisms, and Directories for Public Worship and Church Government. The Westminster assembly Facsimiles series seeks to provide not only access to early editions of these important texts, but also to the published works of the assembly members themselves. Their writings tell stories of the assembly, portray the theological landscape of the time, and reveal the intellectual breadth of the assembly members.

Viewed collectively, the publishing career of the assembly men stretched a century, from the 1590s to the 1690s, and encompassed over 1,500 sermons, treatises, commentaries, and other writings. The Westminster assembly Facsimiles series presents this diverse cross section of published works, with subjects ranging from theology, ecclesiology, and post-Refor-mation polemics, to the activities of Parliament and the events of the Civil War. The result is a unique view into a complex era, particularly the religiously and politically volatile 1640s, when nearly seven hundred works were published by assembly members.

Image quality and text legibility may vary, but every reasonable effort is made to provide an accurate and readable repro-duction of each original volume. These facsimiles afford an advantage over nineteenth-century and more modern reprints, which often contain unacknowledged textual editing that limits their academic value.

all volumes in the Westminster assembly Facsimiles series are from private libraries and institutions which have permitted the Westminster assembly Project to digitize their relevant texts. Continued growth of the series depends on an expanding partnership of individual and institutional libraries permitting digitization of their collections to create an effective library database. Our texts may be downloaded as digital facsimiles or purchased in traditional soft and hardcover bindings for ease of reference.

Vindiciae LegisAnthony BurgessBurgess was chosen to write in response to one of the most popular theological dis-putes of the day, antinomianism, while he was at Sion College, a ministerial fraternal taken over by godly london ministers dur-ing the english Civil War. This volume offers exegetical and theological arguments that

are consonant with the Westminster Confession of Faith and defend the moral law. This is a much-needed work for the law/gospel questions of our own time. (RHB, 281 pgs) HC: $29.00 | PB: $16.00

Mount PisgahThomas CaseThis work was published in the author’s advancing years, and with “the dimness of the eye, and the feebleness of the Hand” the author expounds on 1 Thessalonians 4:13. He opens up for readers the glories of heaven and holds forth hope and expecta-tion for Christians visited and afflicted by

sorrow. (RHB, 165 pgs) HC: $32.00 | PB: $20.00

Sabbatum RedivivumDaniel Cawdrey and Herbert Palmerauthored by two english clergymen who were members of the Westminster assem-bly, this volume treats the Christian Sabbath in its scope, meaning, morality, and obliga-tion for believers. The second part of an earlier work, this stand-alone volume is a defense of the lord’s Day as a rule of life for

believers —a timely message for our day in which apprecia-tion of the Sabbath has dwindled. (RHB, 682 pgs) HC: $42.00 | PB: $29.00

. The Romish FisherDaniel FeatleyIn 1623 Daniel Featley and Francis White engaged in a disputation against two Jesuits on the question of “whether the Protestant Church was in all ages visible, and especially in the ages going before luther.” This volume, in addition to one other, is an account of that event by the

author, who helped translate the KJV and was the only episco-palian leader (of several nominated) to attend the assembly. (RHB, 191 pgs) HC: $36.00 | PB: $22.00

A Guide to Goe to GodWilliam Gougea member of the Westminster assembly and one of its two vice-chairmen, Gouge leads readers to consider prayer and all of life as a journey. Gouge opens up the lord’s Prayer in great detail and demon-strates, with theological soundness and pastoral sensitivity, how the petitions of

the lord’s Prayer serve as patterns to fuel our own prayer lives. (RHB, 340 pgs) HC: $32.00 | PB: $18.00

Works of Robert HarrisRobert HarrisThis massive one-volume collection of works from the president of Trinity Col-lege (1648–1658) covers a broad range of subjects: the covenant of grace; the saints’ happiness; of man’s different estates in creation, fall, and glorification; true bless-edness taught in the Beatitudes; as well as

dozens of inspiring and soul-searching sermons. (RHB, 680 pgs) HC: $50.00 | PB: $34.00

A Discourse of the Two CovenantsWilliam StrongThis work meditates on the similarities and differences between the covenants of works and grace. If there is one subject that Strong excels on in this book, it is the relationship between Christ and the cov-enant. Here the lecturer and later minister at Westminster abbey argues that Christ

is the object and sum of the covenant, the only one through whom the grace of the covenant is given. (RHB, 447 pgs) HC: $42.00 | PB: $26.00

Matthew Henry: His Life and InfluenceAllan Harman

Matthew Henry was the son of a Puritan pastor who had been silenced by the government of the time. Nevertheless Philip Henry, a godly man reared his family on Christian principles and Matthew followed the lord from an early age. although it was difficult to find suitable ministerial training,

Matthew Henry eventually studied for the ministry. With government opposition relaxing, he became a Presbyte-rian pastor in Chester in 1687 and later in london from 1712. It is astonishing to note the amount of preaching and writing that he accomplished despite suffering from ill-health and knowing intense sorrow in his family life.

“Matthew Henry’s Commentary abides today as a classic exposition of the Scriptures. Many people, from George Whitefield to Charles Spurgeon to the modern reader, have found doctrinal wisdom and experiential refreshment in its pages. But few know the author and his Puritan roots. allan Harman’s biography puts in our hands a wealth of information about Matthew Henry. Here we discover his godly father, Philip Henry; his upbringing during times of persecution; and his faithful pastoral ministry in Chester, england. This book will be of great interest to historians, students of the Puritans, pastors, and thousands of oth-ers who continue to benefit from Henry’s Commentary.”

Soul Recreation:The Contemplative-Mystical Piety of PuritanismBy Tom SchwandaSpiritually there is a great hunger today for contemplative and more satisfying experi-ences with God. Few groups in the history of Christian spiritual-ity have written more extensively or wisely on the subject than the Puritans. Isaac ambrose (1604–1664),

a relatively forgotten english Puritan, developed a theo-logical foundation for the spiritual life based upon the Christian’s intimate union with Christ, which the Puritans often called “spiritual marriage.” Schwanda demonstrates that this vibrant relationship of union and communion with Jesus, inspired by the Holy Spirit, was manifested in a deep contemplative and biblical piety of gazing lovingly and gratefully upon God. at the same time, ambrose did not neglect loving his neighbors. This study reveals how heavenly meditation was one of the significant practices engaged by ambrose to cultivate spiritual intimacy and enjoyment of God. Further, his experiential reading of Scripture, in particular the Song of Songs, provided him with a language of ravishment and delight in God.

“While mystical ideas must always be sifted with bibli-cal discernment, it is undeniable that the Reformed and Puritan tradition contains a richly experiential emphasis on delighting in God through Christ. Tom Schwanda has done us a great service in probing that tradition in this study of Isaac ambrose in his historical context. He offers a nuanced explanation of ambrose’s view of being rav-ished with Christ, the Bridegroom of the church. He . . . encourages evangelicals to return to our Reformed roots in order to grow in authentic spirituality.”

A Puritan Theology: Doctrine for LifeJoel R. Beeke and Mark Jones

A Puritan Theology: Doctrine for Life off ers a groundbreaking treatment of the Puritans’ teach-ing on most major Reformed doctrines, particularly those doctrines in which the Puritans made signifi cant contributions. Since the late 1950s, nearly 150 Puritan authors and 700 Puritan titles have been reprinted and catalogued by Joel Beeke and Randall Pederson in their 2006 collection of mini-biographies and book reviews, titled, Meet the Puritans. However, no work until now has gathered together the threads of their teaching into a unifi ed tapestry of systematic theology.

A Puritan Theology, by Joel Beeke and Mark Jones, attempts to do that. The book addresses Puritan teachings on all six loci of theology, covering fi fty areas of doctrine. The book explores Puritan teachings on biblical interpretation, God, predestination, providence, angels, sin, the covenants, the gospel, Christ, preparation for conversion, regeneration, coming to Christ, jus-tifi cation, adoption, church government, the Sabbath, preaching, baptism, heaven, hell, and many other topics. It ends with eight chapters that explore Puritan “theology in practice.” Some chapters highlight the work of a specifi c theologian such as William Perkins, William ames, John Owen, Stephen Charnock, or Thomas Goodwin on a specifi c topic. Other chapters survey vari-ous authors on a particular subject. The goal of A Puritan Theology is to increase knowledge in the mind and godliness in the soul. It was written for theologians, historians, pastors, and edu-cated laymen who seek to learn more about Puritan theology.

“For their exegetical insight, theological precision, and heart-warming devotion, the Puritans remain a gold mine. There are great modern editions of many Puritan classics, anthologies col-lecting their quotes on various subjects, and myriad studies of the movement. So it’s a little surprising that a Puritan systematic theology like this one has never been written. I’m just glad that it has been, and by two scholar-pastors whose familiarity with the primary and secondary sources is unsurpassed. I couldn’t put it down and will return to it again and again. It is an ambi-tious undertaking, but the authors’ pain is our gain. This will be an enduring reference work as well as devotional resource.” — Michael Horton, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic

Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California
