GIS and Lead in Drinking WaterGIS and Lead in Drinking Water

• Lead in drinking water became an issue in Ontario in 2007

• Homes in London found to have elevated lead despite flushing

Page 17: Tom Vair (Ssmic)

GIS and Lead in Drinking WaterGIS and Lead in Drinking Water

• Health Risks

– Particularly for children and pregnant females

– Bottle fed babies

– Exposure can cause damage to nervous system and impaired mental development

– Ontario drinking water quality standards maximum is 10 micrograms per litre.

Sequence of Events

• Fall 2006 - Sault Area Hospital encounters serious C. difficile outbreak

• Hospital spends several million dollars on enhanced cleaning efforts with little improvement

• Investigation of 26 patient cases revealed that C. diff caused or contributed to the death of 18 patients

• January 2007 – Algoma Public Health (APH) asks CGC for assistance in mapping

• Jan – Feb 2007 – CGC captures 3D digital GIS layout of General and part of Plummer Hospitals

• CGC develops C. difficile database tracking application

• Feb-April 2007 – APH enters hospital form data into the C. difficile database application

• March 2007 – CGC begins analysis of spatial relationships and queries

• Questions to be answered:

– Were there “hot” rooms?

– Were patients leaving the hospital with C. diff?

– Were patients admitted to the hospital with C. diff?

– Was practice following policy? For example, were patients being moved with their beds?

– What were the patterns of patient movement and was this a factor?

– Was there excessive patient movement?

– Was patient movement and isolation efficient and effective?
