Tommy Molotov is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist blessed with ethereal vocals and an instinct for capturing the intensity of love and wanderlust into exquisitely crafted songs. His debut EP, Together, forthcoming on 30th September 2014, is driven by the conviction that “our connection with the others defines how happy we are, and everything else in life is fake”. Born and raised in Kiev until the age of sixteen, when he moved to London, Tommy is often associated with the artist movement emerging from the ongoing uprising in his native city. Yet Molotov maintains he is less concerned with being pigeonholed into a political stance, and more with using his music to unify audiences. In light of the ongoing Ukrainian crisis, he affirms: “I think it's time for us to realise our real problem is our view of ourselves as separate people and separate nations that, for some reason, have to be in competition with each other. The moment we start overcoming our separation to understand each other, all the problems will start fading away, in politics, economics, families, medicine, even climate. Any problem you can think of boils down to this.” It’s in the spirit of connectedness that Together was written. Indeed, the reflective four-track EP is a far cry from the sound of aggressive resistance. Citing an assortment of influences as varied as classical Baroque music and modern icons Talk Talk, Molotov’s EP alternates between airy yet hard-hitting ballads and down-tempo hymns scattered with orchestral elements. Produced by Chris Sheehan of Karousel Music and featuring cellist Ben Trigg and Sebastian ‘Bas’ Hankins of Leisure Society, the album is currently available for streaming as a pre-release on Soundcloud. Molotov’s vocal style is particularly unique, not only in its acute technical ability but also for its potently honest quality, encapsulating a vivid warmth that sounds like back-and- forth stride between love and heartbreak. Live acoustic versions of the tracks have been broadcast by Sofar Sounds and Redbox Entertainment this summer. Having performed in Italy, France, Israel, Russia and the UK capital in the past few months alone, Molotov underpins a bordless approach to reaching new audiences and continues to wander the world with a guitar slung on his back as he writes for new recordings, due for release in 2015. “I'd love to make an album that flows like a story, that touches on different existential topics and leaves you wondering what this world is all about.” Already featuring in a full-length documentary, Simona Irerra’s ‘Songbirth’, Molotov’s recent achievements indicate a promising glimpse of the artistry that is sure to blossom in the year to come.
