The first word from Tommy
By the time this issue of the Tommy’s Lifestyle Magazine is printedwe will all know the outcome of the Rugby World Cup but at the timeof preparing this article, we are still awaiting the final with eageranticipation and hoping that our team will once again reign supreme.Irrespective of the result, it has been a wonderful event for those of ussupporting the southern hemisphere teams, but not perhaps somemorable for supporters of the home nations and in particular, forthe hosts and the English supporters!
One of the standout features of the
World Cup for me has been the
amazing displays of patriotism
from avid supporters of the
participating teams. At every
match we have witnessed crowds
of loyal, almost fanatic supporters
encouraging their teams to victory.
Both overseas at the matches and
locally in clubs and pubs
throughout the country, we have
viewed large assemblies of
supporters for teams. There have
been moments of ecstasy for
some and moments of despair for
others as teams were bundled out
of the tournament, occasionally in
controversial circumstances.
If we ever needed evidence that
New Zealand has become a
multicultural society, this has been
displayed in abundance by the
groups of people who have openly
and proudly supported their
countries of origin be it South
Africa, Ireland, Scotland, England,
Japan, the proud Pacific Island
countries, Australia or elsewhere.
No doubt many of these
supporters shifted their allegiance
to New Zealand, their adopted
country once their home teams
were eliminated. My point is,
irrespective of which team we
support it is good to see allegiance
and support being liberally given to
our sporting heroes.
In my “First Word” articles I have
quite often referred to the
similarity between good sports
teams and good sales or business
teams. To reach our true potential
in both sport and business requires
training and dedication,
observance of the rules of the
game, good coaching and a solid
work ethic; all qualities that we
strive to achieve at Tommy’s.
Equally important is having pride in
the team or organisation that we
represent and ensuring that
members of the team do their best
individually and also collectively to
assist the team cause.
In both the business and sporting
worlds, I rate coaching as being of
high importance. regardless of the
talent of individual team members,
they will not reach their potential
unless they are given the right
tools, the right environment and
the right knowledge to be the best
they can possibly be. Full marks
must go to Steve Hansen and his
team of trainers for a job well done.
It is no coincidence either that
many of the other teams at the
World Cup are coached by people
who learned their trade in New
Zealand. Surely we are the rugby
nursery of the world for players as
well as for coaches and
administrators?
On the subject of national pride,
after the World Cup it will be
interesting to follow the progress
on the debate and voting for a new
flag for our country. Without even
trying, the All Blacks and their large
group of supporters have, in recent
weeks, given untold exposure to
the silver fern. This emblem
already has a significant level of
recognition worldwide, particularly
in the sporting arena.
Having said that, I am sure there
were a huge number of Kiwis who
were proud to see Lydia Ko
surround herself recently on
national television with the current
flag after winning a major
tournament. She was proud to be a
Kiwi and I for one was proud to see
her emblazoned in our flag having
just defeated the best women
golfers in the world; a feat that is
sure to be repeated in the future as
she again assumes the ranking of
No. 1 in the world. The same could
be said for our New Zealand
rowers who have historically
proudly adorned themselves with
our existing flag during world
championship medal ceremonies
of which they have been major
participants in recent years.
In summary, irrespective of the
outcome of the flag debate (and it
would not surprise me if there is no
change) let’s all get behind the
chosen one, display it as often as
we can and above all, unite with
pride and loyalty befitting our
wonderful and successful little
country. We have a lot to be proud
of in sport, in business and in many
other fields of endeavour.
P.S. If you like dealing with winners,
give Tommy’s a call. We
were recently adjudged the top
office for sales volume
in New Zealand. We need more
properties to sell and there
is still time to sell your home before
the Christmas break. Call
the award winning team now!!

claiming its sandwiches are ruined by the overuse of coriander, and that the company must be run by coriander worshippers.
It’s an unfortunate dislike, as coriander is a key element in many cooked and raw Asian (except Japanese), Mexican, Middle-Eastern and Mediterranean dishes. The plant is native throughout southern Europe, northern Africa and southwestern Asia. The ancient Egyptians used it for culinary and medical purposes (containers of the seeds were found in Tutankhamen’s tomb) and the ancient Greeks used coriander for cooking and as a perfume. The ancient Hebrews fl avoured cakes with coriander seeds, and the Romans used them as a meat preservative. Chartreuse, made by French Carthusian monks since the late 16th century, is fl avoured with coriander; the liqueur was originally developed as a medicinal elixir and only three monks know the recipe.
Coriander is rather like the pig,
The Cult of CorianderIt’s possibly one of the most polarising of foods; many people tolerate it, a few love it (me!), but some – unfortunates – consider the fl avour and smell disgusting. The culprit? It’s ‘the devil’s herb’, better known as coriander, cilantro, or Chinese parsley.
ISSUE 242: Current to 17th November 2015
Coriander’s citrus fl avour can ruin a meal for those with a particular genetic mutation; they reckon it makes food taste like soap. Researchers have now identifi ed one anti-coriander gene, which aff ects only a few people (all with European ancestry); it’s suspected other genes also play a role. The name ‘coriander’ comes from the Greek word ‘koris’, which means bed-bug; the plant’s foliage and unripe seeds have always been compared to the smell of infested bedding, although the unpleasant smell goes once the seeds are ripe.
Militant coriander-phobes are now retaliating against the world’s culinary love aff air with ‘the devil’s herb’. They’re targeting Britain’s high-street sandwich chain Pret a Manger through social media;
where every part is used except the oink. Europeans prefer using the seeds with their warm, nutty, spicy and orange-fl avoured taste; the seeds often roasted to heighten their pungency. In Asia, chopped leaves are preferred: lavish quantities are used in salads, Indians use coriander in their chutneys and dhals, and the root is used to add intensity to Thai curry pastes. Coriander leaves are a feature of Mexican guacamole and salsas, while – across the border – coriander plants are used to control aphids in California’s lettuce fi elds, their fl owers attract benefi cial insects that eat aphids.
Although not much use to those unfortunates with the rogue coriander-hating gene, the plant is turbo-charged with health benefi ts. Coriander is stuff ed with essential oils, vitamins, iron, minerals, anti-arthritic and anti-rheumatic properties. It excels at warding off food poisoning, its central leaves are loaded with calcium, and it’s good at clearing up skin disorders.
I’ve been a coriander devotee since my fi rst (conscious) encounter, although soon realised my tastes aren’t shared by everyone. As a young teenager, I planted a herb garden with a disproportionate number of coriander plants (they go to seed rapidly); back in those pre-Mexican-food days (when ‘curries’ were served with chopped banana and desiccated coconut) my mother soon ran out of ideas for using up the abundant crop. I suspect she biff ed most of it.
Many years later, as a young bride, I made coriander soup for important guests. It looked terrifi c as I spooned out the emerald green brew from a beautiful antique tureen, not realising one of my guests was a coriander-hater, and he made sure all the other guests knew. England may be the ancestral home of good manners, but has its fair share of boors. It was a low point in hospitality…
My (adventurous) soup-making exploits have had a few other disasters. Recently, when my son returned to Wellington after years in Britain, I made pumpkin soup fl avoured with chilli. It did seem a bit too spicy, so I added more coconut milk and hoped for the best. Jetlagged after the direct fl ight from London, he ploughed (loyally) through a whole bowl before admitting it was thermo-nuclear-powered, and he’d only been able to eat it because he was so zonked from the fl ight. He later confessed he’d been hoping for Sichuan Hot and Sour soup, one of my children’s favourites, to which they loved adding handfuls of coriander.
And now that summer is on its way, my balcony pots are crammed with tiny coriander plants because these days there are so many ways to use the crop, although coriander soup won’t be on the menu. Coriander ice cream, on the other hand... now there’s an idea.

With spring comes sunnier weather, longer days, warmer nights and a fl urry of new properties entering the housing market.
The warmer weather, coupled with lower interest rates, means that if you are thinking about buying your own property, there has never been a better time to start looking. And with 8,174 dwellings sold in September 2015, up 38.3% compared to September 2014 and 5.3% compared to the previous month, it is clear that New Zealand’s property market is getting progressively busier in the build up to Christmas.
For potential home buyers, the news gets even better, as home affordability improves and the value of the majority of homes available in the market place remaining below $600,000. Massey University’s most recent Home Affordability Report, published in September 2015, shows an improvement in home affordability from June 2015 to August 2015 of

2.3%. Furthermore, of the 8174 properties sold in September, nearly 40% of these were sold for under $400,000, and a further 25% for between $400,000 and $600,000.
Also contributing to the busy property market is undoubtedly the Reserve Bank’s recent decisions around the Offi cial Cash Rate, which has dropped from 3.50% to 2.75% in the last 12 months. With further cuts predicted, competition between banks has steadily increased those of us already on the housing market or looking to purchase property have reaped the benefi ts.
If you are looking to buy your own property – whether it be your fi rst home, an upgrade to a family home, or part of an investment portfolio – now is a great time to get out there and get
