its construction equipment manufacturingcapacity. In addition, Volvo CE havestrengthened their dealer network and areoffering an expanded product range that ismore closely tailored to the specific needs ofcustomers in the Asian region. As a result of these major investments

across its Asian industrial operations, thecompany became the largest manufacturer ofwheel loaders and excavators in the Chinesemarket during the first quarter of 2011. Nonetheless, for Volvo CE to stay

competitive in the industry, Mr Olney stressedthe importance of the company’s continuedcommitment to the development of its BRICactivities and customer base, especially inChina which has the world’s largestconstruction equipment market. Equally important is Volvo CE’s widespread

product-renewal programme that will seemore than 50 new products being introducedin 2011. Mr Olney commented: ‘It is thecombination of reliable, fuel-efficient andappropriate products, high production qualityand strong aftermarket support that willhelp us capitalize on the continued growth inthe major markets.’With so many new machines being

launched by the company this year, Volvo Daysgave visitors the opportunity to see some ofthe products being worked in a livedemonstration area (750,000m2) rather thana simulated, artificial one. During the event, thousands of guests watched a team of highlyskilled operators put the various modelsthrough their paces, after which some visitorstook the opportunity to test drive theequipment in order to gain a full insight intohow the machines will operate on site.

Environmental careAs one of the world’s leading manufacturersof construction equipment, Volvo have a clearresponsibility for reducing the environmentalimpact of their products and are fully

committed to producing engines thatsignificantly reduce carbon emissions. The company’s latest advances in engine

technology were clearly showcased inEskilstuna, with the introduction of its newestwheel loaders, excavators and articulatedhaulers all complying with Europe’s Stage IIIBand US Tier 4 Interim emissions regulations. At the heart of Volvo’s solution are their new

electronically controlled V-ACT (Volvo AdvancedCombustion Technology) diesel engines, whichfeature exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) thatminimizes the amount of oxygen in thecombustion chamber, reducing combustionpeak temperature and lowering the formationof nitrogen oxides (NOx) – a key requirementof the new regulations.

The reduction of particulate matter fromdiesel engines is another major target of thelatest legislation, and Volvo have addressedthis by developing an advanced exhaust after-treatment system that minimizes soot in thefilter by 90%, compared with previous machineseries. According to Volvo CE, their new generation

machines not only emit lower emissions butalso offer higher productivity and better fueleconomy. On display and demonstration inEskilstuna, the company’s first 35-tonnewheel loader, the L250G, has been designedas a heavy-duty machine with plenty of powercombining an optimal mix of lifting force andtraction, resulting in high bucket penetration. The new wheel loader features Volvo’s

Optishift system (consisting of a new torqueconverter with lock-up and free-wheel stator)that utilizes the company’s patented reverse-by-braking (RBB) function, which reduces fuelconsumption by up to 15%, as well asincreasing operator comfort and drivelinedurability. When changing from forward to reverse (or

vice versa), RBB applies the standard servicebrake instead of the torque converter, bringingthe machine to a halt and putting less stresson the converter and transmission. Thissignificantly reduces fuel consumption inoperations such as load and carry, as well asin short-cycle loading. The driveline lock-upimproves drive response, rimpull and inclineperformance and fuel-efficiency.The L250G wheel loader also includes

sophisticated load-sensing hydraulics thatdeliver power to hydraulic functions onlywhen needed, without unnecessary oilpumping. Stronger lift and tilt functions areachieved though variable-flow axial pistonpumps, with high capacities for accuratecontrol of attachment and load. Designed to match the needs of on-highway

trucks, the machine is powered by a Volvo 13-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged V-ACT dieselengine, producing 290kw (394hp). Other new Tier 4/Stage IIIB-compliant

machines on show included F-Seriesarticulated haulers, the L180G high-lift wheelloader and EC250D and EC300D crawlerexcavators. The excavator models – which weigh up to

28 tonnes and 33 tonnes, respectively – aredesigned for a wide range of heavy digging andlifting duties. Fitted with Volvo’s Contronicsadvanced mode selection system, operatorscan choose from five working modes that bestsuit the job in hand, resulting in 9-13%improvements in fuel-efficiency. There isalso an attachment-management system onthe machines, which stores up to 18 differentattachment settings. The excavators are equipped with Volvo D8H

engines featuring externally cooled gasrecirculation and active regeneration dieselparticulate filters. Maximum power is 151kw(202hp) on the EC250D and 169kW (227hp) onthe EC300D.Both machines benefit from a sophisticated

hydraulics system that features two ‰

variable-displacement axial piston pumps. When only a single function is used, thehydraulics system combines the flow of bothpumps for quick cycle times and greaterproductivity. For example, it can prioritize flowto the boom for faster rising during loading orin deep excavations. The arms also benefitfrom added flow during levelling. The excavators are fitted with the latest-

generation ROPS-approved Volvo Care Cab,which offers the operator excellent visibilityand ergonomically placed controls andmonitors to help create a quieter, safer andmore spacious working environment to workin. The undercarriage on the EC250D and

EC300D is made from thick-gauge, high-strength tensile steel, while the sprocketand top rollers are made of forged steel, whichis deep hardened for long-term durability. Thebottom rollers use extreme-pressure oil, which reduces oil temperature and ensuresconsistent viscosity under heavy loads. Theundercarriage also utilizes durable three-stage planetary gearboxes and automatictwo-speed track motors.

Wider rangeVolvo’s L110G and L120G wheel loaders wereamong the many new products ondemonstration during Volvo Days. The latestadditions to the G-Series wheel loader rangeboast a number of improvements over theirpredecessors, including 20% more liftingforce, 5% more breakout force and up to 5%better fuel economy in load-and-carry andtruck-loading duties. The wheel loaders are powered by Volvo’s

eight-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged V-ACT(Volvo Advanced Combustion Technology)diesel engine, producing between 191kWand 200kW (260-268hp). As well as meeting low-emissions

legislation, Volvo say the D8 engine alsoleads the way in fuel efficiency, reliability andnoise. The production of torque and power atlow-engine speeds, combined with load-

sensing hydraulics, removes the need tooverrun the engine, which, in turn, extendsengine life as well as lowering fuel usage andreducing noise.

A new waste gate on the turbochargerallows some of the exhaust to bypass theturbine when the set intake pressure isachieved. This contributes to good engineresponse across the entire engine speedrange. The L110G and L120G are fitted with

heavy-duty axles with housings that absorbthe weight of the machine and load. Thismeans the axle-shafts transmit torque to thehub reductions, thereby reducing stress onthe propeller and shafts. The rear-axle cradles are maintenance-

free and the front axle is equipped with ahydraulically operated differential lock. Thistransfers 100% of the power to the wheelsand reduces wheel spin, providing goodtraction in soft or slippery conditions. The ambitious product renewal programme

from Volvo CE clearly demonstrates a firmcommitment to building on their strongposition in the BRIC market. And thesuccessful Volvo Days event not only markedan impressive display of the company’s latestequipment range but also its intent tocontinue to be a leading global supplier ofconstruction machinery.
