Summary Statements

• 75% of all job openings in West Virginia through 2016 will be to

fill existing positions.

• The other 25% will be new jobs – ones that did not exist before ‐

and nearly 60% of these will require at least a two‐year degree.

• The best return‐on‐investment in education may be a two‐year

Associate degree; occupations that typically require a minimum

of a two‐year degree pay 95% of those that requires a Bachelors

Part 4: What West Virginia Workers Earn, by the Minimum Training and Education Their Jobs Require

Related Handout: What West Virginia Workers Earn

• Jobs that require higher levels of education and training usually

pay better.

• We looked at the minimum education required for every

occupation in West Virginia and what they paid in 2007, and

found that an Associate’s Degree may offer the best return‐on‐

investment.

• Jobs that require an Associate’s degree pay only $1,500 less

annually than jobs that require a Bachelors Degree.

• A few surprises are in jobs that require a Masters or Doctoral

degree. Their comparatively low pay may be due to their heavy

concentration in the education field.
