TOOL // Elementary Spelling Their Way Diagnostic What is the tool? Words Their Way Elementary Spelling Inventory What is it used for? The professional development book, "Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction” by Bear, Invernizzi, Templeton, Johnston, provides three spelling inventories, to help determine each student’s developmental spelling stage. Knowledge of each student’s stage helps with instructional planning for word work and word study. The resource also includes detailed instructional ideas for each stage. How do you use it? The inventory is administered orally to the whole class or to small groups for whom you have a concern regarding their spelling and word knowledge. Depending on the grade level (there are three levels); the teacher dictates the words to the students. The teacher then analyzes the results to classify student errors and pinpoint specific areas for instruction. There is a Class Tracking sheet to identify class needs as well as an individual sheet for looking closely at an individual student.
Elementary Spelling Inventory (ESI)The Elementary Spelling Inventory (ESI) covers more stages than the PSI. It can be usedas early as first grade, particularly if a school system wants to use the same inventoryacross the elementary grades. The 25 words are ordered by difficulty to sample featuresof the letter name–alphabetic to derivational relations stages. Call out enough words sothat you have at least five or six misspelled words to analyze. If any students spell morethan 20 words correctly, use the Upper Level Spelling Inventory.
