Excel Traitgenerator

The MS Excel Trait Generator

This is a trait generator, or editor, that was done with Excel. Youneed Excel 97-2003 or higher to get it running. I couldn’t findanything of the like in the download section, so I made one myself.May be you’ll find it useful too.

1. Getting started

When you start the Traitgenerator you’ll see several tabs. Thegreen one is your worksheet. It is blank because you will copy stufffrom the orange tabs here. The red tabs you should not touch, andyou should not edit anything in the orange sections.

2. Creating a new trait

Now, let’s make a new trait. In our example we want to make atrait “GoodJudge” with three levels, a gain- and a loose-messageand an epithet for the third level, an anti-trait with the name“BadJudge” also with three levels a gain- and a loose-message andan epithet for the third level. Each level should give or take oneadditional point in law.

To do so open the “Trait”-tab. Here you’ll see a complete trait withthe name “Traitname”, five levels, gain- and lose-messages, thatgives lots of “Unorthodoxy”, plus a corresponding anti-trait.

Further down you’ll see the part for export-vnvs.txt, the entrieswith the “{ }“ brackets.

Because we do not want to edit anything in the orange zone, wecopy this entire sheet into the “Worksheet”.

Now we are ready to start. The first you do is to replace the name“Traitname” with the name of the trait you wanted to make,“GoodJudge”. As you can see, the Traitgenerator automaticallychanged the names of the levels and descriptions accordingly. Thisis nearly where we wanted to go, but you still have a few things todo.

Page 3: [Tool] Excel Traitgenerator

Because we wanted this trait to add law, you can click into the cellwith effect. This will open a list with all possible effects. Pick theone of your choice. It is obvious that, even though you can assigneach attribute to each character, not all combinations make sense;like “Command” for a princess. But some modders use this to storeinformation on characters that way. When needed change thevalues behind the effect to the amounts you wish.

You can change the character in the same way. When you needmore characters, you need to add them by hand.

Now let’s go to the anti-trait. Its name was to be “BadJudge”, sochange that accordingly. After that make all the changes in effectsyou need here, i.e. change the first effect line to “law”.

As you can see, the Traitgenerator has exported the name of youranti-trait to the respective line of the GoodJudge.

Now we still have a lot of stuff we don’t need on this worksheet, like the gain descriptions for the lower levels, the additional twolevels, the “Hidden” remark. Delete these things in two steps:

First delete the contents of the cells you don’t need, but do notdelete the respective lines.

Then select the entire worksheet and copy & paste the content’svalue. After that you can delete the lines you don’t need.

Why this is done in two steps you’ll see when you come to theexport_vnvs.txt section: The parts not used have left lines startingwith empty brackets “{}”. That way you don’t have to scroll up anddown to find the entries that are not needed. Delete these lines. You also see that the Traitgenerator has exported the name of your

levels, created generic descriptions and gain/loose-massages,exported the correct effect (it does so for maximum the pre-definedthree effect lines) and created a generic epithet. You certainly wishto edit the visible texts, but don’t do here.

It is time to get your trait into the game! Copy the upper part ofyour worksheet into export_descr_character_traits.txt into thetraits’ section.

The lower section goes into export_vnvs.txt. Here you can edit thevisible texts if you like. But do not edit anything that is {inside thebrackets}! For now we leave everything as it is, because this isjust a test-trait.

3. Creating a Trigger

A trait alone won’t help you much because no one would be able toacquire it. For that you’ll need a trigger. To make one, open the“Trigger” sheet.

Here you can see all possible events for traits sorted into groups, like “Military”, “Governors” and the like. Under each event you findthe conditions. These are also grouped into things like “CharacterReligion”, “Faction Economy”, “Settlement” and the like. You seethat not all groups of conditions appear under each event. In thiscase this event cannot export to that group. For example“SettlementName” works with “CharacterTurnEnd” but not with“CharacterTurnStart”, therefore you’ll find the group “Settlement”listed under the event “CharacterTurnEnd” but not under“CharacterTurnStart”.

But beware! This is not “fool proved”, so to speak. There are still acouple of combinations allowed by this sheet that won’t work, won’tmake any sense or won’t give you results.

You can open a list for each group when clicking in the respectivecell. The conditions are listed in the sample form of the Docus. Thatis to remind you that some conditions need additional information towork, like the name of a trait.

At the end of the sheet you’ll find the head- and base-lines of yourtrigger. Copy this to the worksheet.

For our GoodJudge trait we want to make a simple test trigger thatassigns one level to the faction leader every turn. So search for theevent “CharacterTurnStart” and copy the entire block intoworksheet between the head- and base-lines of your trigger.

Give your trigger a name. After that search in the cell of the“Character Family” group for the condition IsFactionLeader. Copythis into the “Condition” line.

After that search in the same group for the “Trait” condition. Itsays “Trait Girls” even though we want “Trait GoodJudge”, but thiscan be changed later. Add the trait GoodJudge to the Affects-line.It also needs a value (1, 2 etc). You can copy and delete lines tocreate or remove additional conditions in this worksheet withoutcausing trouble, the values are not exported anywhere.

When you are done, copy this trigger to the end of the fileexport_descr_character_traits.txt. Here you can make the finaledit, like changing the “Girls” into “Goodjudge”, adding the value tothe Affects line or changing the value of the chance.

Save everything, start your game, search for your faction leader. He should have the first level GoodJudge already now for startinghis first turn:

Re: Excel Traitgenerator

In this case you have made something wrong. Because the Trait isthere (otherwise you wouldn't be able to grant it via console), itmust be something in the trigger section. Could you please posthow your trigger looks.

Its all workingnow. Well done Knny, this has been very helpful and brilliant
