Signposting & Supported Self-Referral
How much you can do to help and support someone will vary depending on your
role, your position and the relationships you have with the people you support. As a
Money Champion you are in a good position to be able to identify when someone
might need the additional support that an advice service can offer. There are a wide
range of money advice services across Northern Ireland specialising in;
Advice on entitlement and access to benefits,
Dealing with debts,
Rent arrears and problems with Mortgage payments,
Energy Efficiency - saving on bills, grants and switching providers
This guide lists which organisations can offer free, confidential and impartial advice
for money related issues. It will also provide guidance on the ways you can support
people to get the right advice to meet their specific needs, in your role as Money
Champion.
As a Money Champion helping someone to access advice, there are different levels
of support you can offer. The level of support you provide will depend on the
individual needs of the person and their preferences. Some people will want to deal
with their own money matters and will be able to do so with a minimal amount of
support. Others will need a bit of extra support and encouragement and some will
need quite a lot of support.
In terms of Money advice services and money matters, the people you support are
considered to be eligible for extra support by virtue that their illness can place them
in a vulnerable position. If the advice provider is made aware of this at the start, they
should be able to prioritise the case and ensure any necessary reasonable
adjustments are in place.
Steps for Supporting people to access advice;
When you identify that someone needs to access an advice service, think about
what level of support would be best for them at this point in time. Some people will
just need a telephone number or an address and will be able to get the process
started themselves. As a Money Champion, when you identify a need for advice you
should encourage the person in need to access the relevant advice service as early
as possible. It is helpful if they have all the relevant information to hand when
seeking advice, so encourage the people you support to keep a folder with benefits
letters, NI number, bank account details etc.
Signposting: We ‘signpost’ by giving someone the details of an advice agency,
like a website, e-mail address or phone number, and suggest they contact them
for advice. If the person is confident enough, providing information about where
they can access appropriate advice can be enough.
Self -supported referral: At other times, they may need more than this. They
may need you to help them gather the relevant information and moral support
to make a call to ask for advice. With a supported self-referral, we enable the
person to contact the agency to introduce themselves/make an appointment. In
cases where the person wants you to speak on their behalf, the advice provider
will need to establish that the person has given their permission. Where
possible, you should have the person present with you when you make the call
and make a note of important details for future reference.
Sometimes advice queries can take time to reach a conclusion. In cases like this it
is important to offer reassurance that the matter is being dealt with but if an
unreasonable length of time has lapsed or the person is feeling anxious, call again to
check on progress.
