INSTRUCTIONSINSTRUCTIONSAs classrooms across the United States become more linguistically diverse, it is

vital that beginning ELL students have the support and tools they need to learn and

to master English as a second language. This Toolkit for English Language Learn-

ers is designed to meet the needs of Spanish-speaking students who are strug-

gling with or just beginning to learn English. The Toolkit provides native language

support and resources for beginning English speakers to help them understand

content while they learn the nuances of a new language. In a language-rich inter-

active classroom environment, the proficiency levels of beginning English language

speakers will rise incrementally, and the need for translated content will decrease

over time.

How to use the Toolkit for English Language Learners with Vocabulary Magic® Science Card Sorts:

The Toolkit for English Language Learners, like the Card Sorts, is divided

into four strands, as well as by Card Sort number. They are:

• Earth & Space

• Matter & Energy

• Organisms & Environments

• Force, Motion & Energy

There are twenty integrated Science Card Sorts in the

Elementary Toolkit. Overall, the Card Sorts include 180 science

terms and definitions, and a Spanish translation is provided for

each and every term. For example, if ELL students are working

with Matter & Energy, Card Sort # 1, they can access Spanish

translations for the nine terms and nine definitions

on page 4 of the Toolkit. As they reference the

translated materials in the Toolkit, their knowledge

of new academic vocabulary terms will expand.

Remember, it is critical that students have some

access to grade-level appropriate content in their

native language while they practice, improve, and

master a second language.
