From the Headmaster

In this edition of the Newsletter I wish to refer to a change in the composition of the School’s corporate governance, senior staffing, the academic results of the Class of 2017, the tone of the School and the celebration of the GPS centenary year.

The School’s Board of TrusteesFor those parents who are relatively new to the School, you may not be fully aware of the nature of the corporate governance of our School. Toowoomba Grammar School is one of only eight original Grammar Schools in Queensland and is a member of the Grammar Schools of Queensland Association. The eight original Grammar Schools are Toowoomba Grammar School, Brisbane Grammar School, Brisbane Girls Grammar School, Townsville Grammar School, Ipswich Grammar School, Ipswich Girls Grammar School, Rockhampton Grammar School and Rockhampton Girls Grammar School. Each of these schools is a Statutory Authority and under statute all are non-denominational. Each of these schools also has the same form of corporate governance via a Board of Trustees. The State Government stipulates the composition

of the Board of Trustees, so each Grammar School has a seven-person Board, four of whom are appointed by the State Government while the remaining three Trustees are elected to this office. In accordance with the Grammar Schools Act 2016, the four-year term of existing members expired in September of last year.

The composition of our Board of Trustees for 2018 – 2021 is as follows. The Chairman of the Board, Mr Glen McCracken, continues in this role and is now the longest serving Chairman in the history of the School. Mr McCracken joined the Board in 1990 and was elected Chairman in 1999; thus this year represents his twentieth year as Chairman. As Headmaster, I greatly appreciate his accessibility and his professional advice, particularly in areas relating to his own profession, the Law, and in his knowledge of the financial management of the School. Mr McCracken has the added advantage of being an Old Boy (Senior Dayboy Prefect) and the parent of a son who attended the School. It is important we appreciate that all of the work done by the members of the Board of Trustees is completely voluntary.

Headmaster

Dear Parents,

Life at the School is at its usual hectic pace, offering multiple opportunities for the boys to become involved in a vast range of activities both in the classroom and beyond.

School Notices

Mr John Handley, as Deputy Chairman, decided not to seek re-election and his term concluded at the end of last year after having completed 22 years of outstanding service to our School. This included appointments not only as a Trustee and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees but also as a former President of the Toowoomba Grammar School Old Boys’ Association. The new Deputy Chairman of the School’s Board of Trustees is Dr Russell Domrow, a medical practitioner who is also the parent of two young Old Boys. Dr Domrow was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2009 and he is also the Chair of the Works Sub-Committee of the Board. We congratulate Dr Domrow on his appointment as Deputy Chairman of the Board.

In addition to attending monthly meetings of the Board, all seven Trustees must attend either one or two monthly meetings involving membership of Works, Finance or Risk Management and Compliance Sub-Committees. The Board members are not involved in the day-to-day running of the School or its management. Rather, the members of the Board have the responsibility for the future strategic direction of the School.

The Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Board is Mr Chris Wicks who was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2011. Mr Wicks boarded at Toowoomba Grammar School from 1981 to 1985 and was Senior Prefect in 1985. Mr Wicks has an agribusiness background and he currently works for a resource company in forecasting and economic modelling of gas developments and facilitating coexistence with landholders. Mr Wicks’ two sons attended Toowoomba Grammar School and he is a Past President of the Old Boys’ Association.

Also on the Finance Committee and the Chair of the Risk Management and Compliance Committee is Mr Brendan Baulch who joined the Board in 2017. Mr Baulch is the principal of Baulch & Associates, a Toowoomba-based accounting practice providing taxation, audit and management accounting services to small and medium-sized enterprises. He has a Bachelor of Commerce and Law and is a current Toowoomba Grammar School parent.

Another member of the Finance Committee is a newly elected Trustee, Mr Barry O’Sullivan, who joined the Board in January this

year. Mr O’Sullivan is the Director of Newlands Civil Construction and Newlands Commercial Construction, based in Toowoomba, which specialise in civil and commercial construction. Mr O’Sullivan is also involved in a number of other companies and is a current Toowoomba Grammar School parent.

In addition to Mr Baulch as Chair of the Risk Management and Compliance Committee are two other Trustees, Dr Nicola Hulme-Peake and Dr Russell Domrow. Dr Hulme-Peak was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2013 having emigrated from the United Kingdom in 1995. She is a practising dentist with a Toowoomba dental clinic and she is a current Toowoomba Grammar School parent.

Dr Domrow, as Chair of the Works Committee, is joined by two other Trustees, Mrs Kym Murray and Mr Barry O’Sullivan. Mrs Murray was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2013. She has degrees in Arts and Law. Mrs Murray and her husband have owned and operated a successful small business in Toowoomba for the past 30 years. Her two sons are Old Boys of Toowoomba Grammar School.

It is obvious that the professional experience of these seven people, together with their association with the School in varying capacities, represents a most important resource for the School. I am sure that all associated with the School are extremely appreciative of their extensive voluntary efforts.

Senior StaffingThe School’s Board of Trustees has a ‘Secretary’ or Executive Officer. The current Secretary to the School’s Board of Trustees is the Chief Financial Officer, Mr Graham Woolacott, also the parent of an Old Boy. Since 1874 there have only been six Secretaries to the School’s Board of Trustees. Mr Woolacott, who will retire in April of this year after eleven years in this role, has been instrumental in co-ordinating the massive building program undertaken by the School over the last decade and, through his professional management of the School’s finances, has ensured that the School is in a secure financial position. The School is extremely grateful to Mr Woolacott for his professionalism and

commitment to the School in every way. Mr Woolacott’s successor, who will commence in April of this year is Mrs Christina Onley.

Mrs Onley is a new Toowoomba Grammar School parent whose son is a boarder in Corfe House. Mrs Onley attended both Fairholme College and St Margaret’s College in secondary school and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from The University of Queensland before qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. Early in her career she worked as an Auditor with Ernst & Young and Suncorp Metway Bank in Brisbane. Her career advanced in accounting as a Financial Accountant, Chief Accountant, Project Manager and Finance Manager.

Currently Mrs Onley is the General Manager (Finance & IT) with Murrumbidgee Irrigation Ltd, in Griffith, NSW. This is the largest private irrigation company in Australia with its 2017 revenue exceeding $90M and net assets valued at over $500M.

We will welcome Mrs Onley to TGS as Chief Financial Officer on Monday, 30 April (Week 3 of Term Two).

Also relevant to senior staffing, the School has welcomed the arrival of Mr Wesley Dunne, the new Director of Sport and Activities and a member of the School Executive. Mr Dunne and his family have transferred to Toowoomba from Sydney where he was the Sportsmaster of one of the NSW GPS schools, St Ignatius College, Riverview. The School is delighted to secure the services of such an experienced educator and administrator of co-curricular programs.

The Academic Results of the Year 12, 2017The School received very favourable publicity in both The Courier Mail and The Chronicle regarding the percentage of OP eligible students achieving an OP 1-5 in 2017. The School was ranked the ‘top school’ in Toowoomba and the Darling Downs using this criterion and 25th in Queensland. The use of the OP 1-5 range can be misleading and subject to misinterpretation. An illustration of this may be shown by considering a school with a very small enrolment of Year 12 students who are eligible for an OP assessment. For example, it is conceivable that a school could be ranked first in the State with an OP enrolment of ten students and not one of these ten students gaining an OP1, 2, 3, or 4. If seven of these ten students achieved an OP of 5 and the remaining three students gained an OP of 20 then this school would still be ranked number one in Queensland with a percentage figure of 70% in the OP range 1-5.

If one was to exclude small Year 12 OP eligible enrolments (such as schools with fewer than 100 OP eligible Year 12 students) then Toowoomba Grammar School would have been ranked 12th in the State using the OP1-5 criterion. Whilst the School is delighted with the academic success of its Year 12 students and the committed and professional efforts of the teaching staff, the quality of OP results is only one measure of a successful school. At Toowoomba Grammar School we are committed to a broad education and one embracing more than just academic study. We focus on the development of fine young men who can demonstrate compassion, friendliness, a solid work

ethic, loyalty, teamwork, respect for others, tolerance and resilience. We do this in the classroom, in the day school and boarding houses, in Pastoral Care Group meetings with Housemasters and Mentors, via positive role modelling from staff and senior boys, through a thorough involvement in the extensive co-curricular program of sport and various activities, and through a commitment to the well-being of others in our Community Service program.

The Tone of the SchoolFurther to the above values and behaviours, the School also seeks our boys to respect authority if exercised properly and to display good manners. We note it is increasingly rare in the wider community for many people to display good manners and common courtesy. Through an encouragement of these values reinforced both by the family and School we are confident that our young men will stand out in a crowd for the respectful interactions they have with others, both now and in the future.

The Centenary Year of the GPS Association of QueenslandWay back in September 1918 the then Headmaster of Brisbane Grammar School, Mr Stephenson, organised a full-day athletics meet for Queensland secondary schools. It was envisaged that only “state grammar schools and such other schools as can show an enrolment of at least one hundred secondary pupils” should attend and be considered for the new Association. The athletics competition was held at the Brisbane Exhibition Ground and the Great Public Schools (GPS) Association of Queensland was duly established. On Monday 19 February this year the Headmasters/Principals of the nine member schools of the GPS Association met, together with senior staff and student leaders, to celebrate the centenary year of the Association. This was held at St Joseph’s Nudgee College and it was a most enjoyable occasion. In the next few weeks all boys from Years 5-12 will receive a label badge with the GPS 100 years logo as a personal memento. The launch of the centenary year included the screening of a 90 second video trailer reflecting on the fellowship of the GPS. A film, A Day in the Life of a GPS student, will be produced later this year and the GPS website will be updated to include relevant historical information from the last one hundred years. I will keep you informed as material is produced. To access the 90 second GPS video trailer, click here.

I wish you and your son all the best for the second half of Term One.

Yours sincerely,

Peter B. HauserHeadmaster

From the Deputy Headmaster

Interact is a Rotary-sponsored club providing an opportunity for young people to participate in enjoyable and meaningful service projects. Participating in Interact provides many boys with leadership opportunities to propose, plan and co-ordinate service events and initiatives throughout the year. Club activities also promote involvement in the local community and beyond, expanding international knowledge and understanding. “Service Above Self” is Rotary’s foremost guiding principle and this has been adopted by our Interact Club.

The TGS Interact Club recently held its annual Interact Change-Over Dinner. During this evening, the incoming Executive Committee was presented and the efforts of the outgoing Executive and 2017 Service Committees were acknowledged. The 2018 Interact Club Executive consists of:

President – Thomas Plant

Secretary and Vice-President – Mark Anderson

Treasurer – Lachlan Vary

Sergeant-At-Arms – Ross Staude

At the dinner and a recent assembly, President Thomas Plant acknowledged the guidance of the Toowoomba South Rotary Club and our Rotary mentor, Mr Paul Merry. The TGS Interact Club of 2018 will continue to seek opportunities for TGS men to make a difference, and learn the value and benefits of putting service above self.

The Interact Club has already been active in organising the first

free-dress day and fundraising of the year to support Dolly’s Dream Foundation and Kodi’s Message. The Club is looking forward to the many service opportunities throughout the year.

The service theme was extended at a recent assembly when Senior Dayboy Prefect, Adrian Irwin, addressed the boys. Adrian shared his thoughts about service:

Service is about more than helping others. Service is character building. Service is incredibly rewarding. And helping others is one of the most valuable experiences in life. Service will give you a new perspective into the lives of others and your own life. It will open your eyes to just how fortunate you, and indeed we, all are.

Adrian recapped on the successful “Football boots for Zambia” initiative conducted last year. Sixty pairs of football boots from TGS boys were shared between the Pallabana Orphanage and the Kyndu Basic School. The boots made a significant impact on the young children in these schools. Whilst the football boot donations will continue this year, Adrian has invited boys to consider donating any old computers or laptops that could be used in schools for new computer studies courses mandated by the Zambian government. We are hoping to achieve a donation of 20 computers to be shared around five schools in the district. On behalf of Adrian, I extend the invitation to parents or owners of businesses who may be able to assist with computer donations. There is no preference to age, model, computing power or even brand. If you are able to assist, simply drop the computer or laptop into the School House Reception.

Toowoomba Grammar School has a proud Interact tradition.

Traffic Safety for Toowoomba Grammar SchoolThere are a number of locations throughout the School allocated for the safe and efficient arrival and departure of boys. Please take note of traffic signs and roadway markings in these areas designed to assist in safe pedestrian and vehicle traffic flow.

School HouseThe roadway in front of School House is marked both with double yellow lines and also with No Standing Emergency Vehicles Only signs. The double yellow lines indicate No Parking at Any Time.

Please respect these, as we need a safe and unimpeded access for Emergency Vehicles on this roadway at all times. Because of the shape of the loop at the top of the roadway, in an emergency situation, fire trucks must drive on the right-hand side of the roadway against the traffic flow to easily access the required fire hydrant points.

Before and after school, parents are able to drop-off and collect boys from this area. Please do not park inside the yellow lines to allow room for boys to walk safely to and from the stairs or ramp in front of School House.

Bus Shelter• The Margaret Street loop has a designated Bus Lane and it is

expected that buses are always given right of way and preferential parking at all times.

• Traffic cones may at times be used to ensure the safe access of buses arriving from, or about to depart on, excursions – please do not park within the sectioned-off area.

• During the winter months, please do not park or drive onto the centre median strip as this causes damage to the turf surface.

Corfe Student Drop and Go Area• This area is a short-term drop off / pick up zone only.• Please do not park and leave your vehicle unattended as this

creates traffic congestion difficulties for other parents and boys.• The School has a number of pedestrian crossings on the main

driveway. Parents and boys are encouraged to use these. Boys crossing the road away from these points create a visibility and safety issue, especially when there is an increased amount of traffic before and after school.

Junior School Drop-Off Area• This area is a short-term drop off / pick up zone only.• Please do not park and leave your vehicle unattended in this zone

as it creates traffic congestion difficulties not only for other parents and boys, but also in Herries Street for the general traffic flow. If you need to meet or have an appointment with a Junior School staff member, please park either in Herries Street or the Aquatic Centre carpark.

• As you depart the Junior School drop-off area, there is a Give Way sign at the exit. Please take care to ensure the safety of boys and other drivers.

• Departing the School into Herries Street is a left turn only.• The roadway at the rear of the Aquatic Centre is for disabled access

and delivery vehicles only. Please keep this area clear.

From the Head of Senior School

When interviewed, almost every perpetrator of verbal or cyber-bullying will tell a teacher or adult: “It was just a joke.” In reacting to a negative comment from a peer, boys will often smile as it is their only means of defence. Young male perpetrators of bullying perceive this to indicate that the person on the receiving end is laughing; unfortunately, this is not the case. Our great challenge as educators and parents is to teach our teenagers, especially those in their early teenage years, if they have stepped over a line and if a peer is smiling uncomfortably as opposed to laughing. When a boy makes a comment the first time it can be genuinely funny, and our boys enjoy lots of friendly banter. However, often the boys forget that the second or fifth or even tenth time a comment is made it can be hurtful. Teaching boys to read emotions can be difficult but we must persevere in educating them on the difference between a joke and a hurtful comment.

On Friday, 16 February the boys in the Senior School raised awareness of bullying and cyber-bullying by wearing their “Golds” uniform for the day. The boys wore blue in support of Dolly Everett and yellow (gold) in support of Kodi Pearson. Special thanks to Thomas Plant, President of Interact, the Interact Committee and the School Prefects for their efforts in making blue ‘Sno’ cones and fairy floss that were sold to raise money for Dolly’s Dream and Kodi’s Message. Over $1,500 was raised on the day.

Almost 900 boys in the Senior School have completed the Bullying Survey which was distributed to the boys on Wednesday, 21 February. Whilst analysing the data from the survey will take some time, the information the boys have provided will be most valuable in identifying current trends and any areas of concern that we need to address at Toowoomba Grammar School.

Outdoor Activities and Pursuits WeekAs all parents would be aware, the end of Term One will see all year levels take part in the Outdoor Pursuits and Activities Week. I know that many of the boys are looking forward to the week. Toowoomba Grammar School helps the boys to develop character through these camps. The Years 8 and 9 camps aim to develop some grit in our boys through their exposure to challenging physical activities, adventures and team building exercises. The idea is that both are challenging camps and that the boys will gain a sense of satisfaction from completing the tasks available to them. Dr Arne Rubenstein is an expert on adolescent development and in 2013 published a best-selling book titled, “The Making of Men”. One of Dr Rubenstein’s theories is that young men at about the age of 14 struggle to move into manhood because they don’t experience a “rite of passage” or tough physical challenge that many young men have been required to undertake in a number of cultures throughout history. Whilst our Year 8 and 9 camps are only for three nights, they will be challenging for the boys. We trust that the boys enjoy the challenge and develop personal skills such as adaptability, respect, resilience, commitment, responsibility and effective communication. It is also my hope that the boys appreciate the comforts of home on their return.

The Year 7 boys head to Alexandra Headland and will spend Sunday to Wednesday getting to know their peers and key staff. I am confident that the Year 10 boys will find their work experience valuable as they begin the process of considering their path into senior

studies and beyond school. The Year 12s will again complete a number of life skills courses this year; defensive driving, first aid and responsible service of alcohol courses along with university tours will keep the boys busy throughout the week. I am particularly interested in seeing how the Year 11s respond to the Leadership Conference where they will learn the principles of leadership and get the opportunity to explore what effective leadership looks like at Toowoomba Grammar School.

SocialsThroughout the year, boys will be invited to participate in Socials with Fairholme College, The Glennie School and St Ursula’s College. Socials may be dances, pool parties, games and activities afternoons, trivia nights, movie nights or social dance classes (depending on their year level). These are listed in the School Calendar.

The boys are invited to each Social via email and can sign up via a link on that email. If the boys fail to sign up by the due date, they are unable to attend. Boys are expected to travel to and from an away venue on the bus provided by the School and should arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the departure time. There is usually a small cost incurred to attend a Social and this is added to your School account.

We do expect the boys to dress appropriately to attend these Socials. At times, the Social will have a theme and boys are encouraged to dress accordingly. Where there is no theme, or the boys choose not to come in theme, they are expected to attend in smart casual attire, including:

• enclosed shoes• long pants or dress shorts (We stress to the boys that dress shorts

are longer than football shorts.)• a smart t-shirt or collared shirt• no ripped clothing or inappropriate text or logos.

Boys who present in something less than smart casual attire will not be permitted to attend.Should you have any questions regarding Socials, please contact the Co-ordinator of Pastoral Care, Ms Suzanne Connelly ([email protected]).

GPS Championship EventsThe first GPS Championship event for the year is the Swimming Championshiop which will be held at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, Chandler, on Friday, 2 March. It is a great event to start the year; many boys enjoy spectating and supporting our swimmers. All Year 12 students are expected to attend as spectators and other boys are welcome to sign up to attend through the Sport and Activities Office. We expect all boys to support one GPS event per year, and as noted in the School calendar, all Year 10 boys will attend GPS Cross Country in Term Two and all Year 11 boys will attend the GPS Track and Field

Championships in Term Four. Pride Points are on offer for the boys who attend the GPS Championship Events.

School ReportsTeachers complete school reports for boys each term at Toowoomba Grammar School. Interim Reports are prepared for Terms One and Three while in Terms Two and Four (excluding Year 12) extensive End of Semester Reports are compiled. The Interim Reports provide a progress report for each boy while the End of Semester Reports indicate Levels of Achievement for each subject and contain feedback comments from teachers.

Teachers will judge boys’ efforts in Work Ethic and Behaviour which will be indicated in all four reports for the year. Their efforts will be rated as Very Good, Good, Satisfactory or Needs Improvement. All of the teachers encourage a consistent and positive work ethic in the hope that all boys will realise their academic potential.

Interim Reports will be sent to parents during the Easter vacation.

Parent-Teacher Meetings – Term TwoPlease see the details below for Term Two Parent-Teacher meetings. The meetings will be split between boarders and dayboys over two days and interviews can be booked online through the Parent Portal.

Location Date SessionsBoarders Purves Monday, 16 April 11.00am - 1.00pm; 3.00pm - 4.30pmDayboys Purves Tuesday, 24 April 3.30pm - 5.30pm; 6.00pm - 7.30pm

Should there be interview space available on Monday, 16 April, day parents would have the additional option to book on this day. I will write to all parents with instructions on how to make a booking and the dates the portal will be open in the coming weeks.

From the Head of Junior SchoolDear Parents

Our Year 6 boys recently enjoyed a leadership day run by an external organisation ‘Unleashing Personal Potential’.

Head of Junior School

Our Year 6 boys stand proud as they take on their roles as leaders of the Junior School.

This followed on from the leadership development program that commenced when the boys were in Year 5, preparing the students for the expectations that come with being the senior year group in the Junior School. The boys were required to work in teams, their thinking was challenged and the level of expectation was raised. The Year 6 boys are now in the process of nominating for a range of roles in the Junior School that are designed to give back to the community and role model for the younger students. I wish the boys every success in their endeavours this year.

Swimming CarnivalThe Swimming Carnival for under 9 to under 12 year old boys was held recently in the School’s Aquatic Centre. The boys competed well both in the pool and in their House groups, with their war cries displaying some great energy. Congratulations to Boyce House for their victory in the pool and to Mackintosh for earning the House Spirit Trophy. The accompanying photograph shows the age champions and runners up.

Front row (L-R) consists of Juert Eerkens, Max Grills, Oliver Clifford, Bailey Harm and Jude Greenhalgh. Max Grills is holding the House Shield, which Boyce House won. Oliver Clifford holds the House Spirit Trophy, representing Mackintosh.

until 12.00pm, with tours commencing at 9:00am

and 11:00am. Please invite friends, work colleagues and others interested in

knowing more about our wonderful School.

Head of Junior School

I thank Mr David Anderson, Junior School Sportsmaster, for organising the carnival and I am also appreciative of the many Junior School staff who assisted in a variety of roles on the day. Special mention must be made of Mrs Bliss Bierhoff, President of the Junior School Supporters’ Group, for organising the coffee cart and the home baking for the benefit of boys, parents and staff. It was a most enjoyable day.

P – 12 Open Day, Thursday 8 MarchThe School will be hosting a P – 12 Open Day on Thursday 8 March from 9.00am until 12.00pm. This will operate as a normal school day with tours of the Junior School and Senior School occurring at 9.00am and 11.00am. If you have friends who are interested in sending their son to Toowoomba Grammar School, commencing in the Junior School, can I please encourage you to mention the Open Day to them?

The Year 12 Scholars of 2017

Established 1875

TOOWOOMBA GRAMMAR SCHOOL

From the Director of Studies

Director of Studies

This year we welcomed back 42 of our newest Old Boys, one of our biggest groups yet, as a consequence of the excellent OP results this cohort produced. With a range of destinations from South East Queensland, Canberra, Sydney, The United States and Cambridge, this group of young men have had a myriad of opportunities open up to them as a result of their hard work. The guest speaker, Dr Bryn Jones, a TGS Old Boy and paediatric cardiologist from Melbourne described the early days of his career and the steps he took before finally determining where his true passion lay. It is an important message for the boys to take on; very few students really know what they want to do when they leave school. Or, if they do, they must be flexible and understand that they will be exposed to far more opportunities and experiences which may alter their path. Three of our Old Boys also addressed the boys and, without any prompting or collusion, all three spoke to the boys about maintaining a balance during school. Ensuring enough sleep, eating well, and a balance between co-curricular activity as well as study was the secret of their success. Time management should enable students to enjoy everything the School has on offer without negatively impacting on results.

QCS TrialThe Year 12 students undertook a day of QCS trialling last week, completing their first full day including a Short Response Test and a Multiple Choice Test. One of the challenges of the QCS testing days in September is to manage the fatigue that comes with a full day of intense assessment. The trial days are important to not only expose the boys to the challenges of these unique tests, but to also give them experience of the physical and mental rigours of the day of testing. I was extremely proud of the mature way in which the Year 12 young men approached these tests.

Senior TutoringOur Senior Academic Leaders run tutoring sessions for boys for all year groups and subjects in the Library. These are held every Monday and Friday at lunch and every Wednesday after school. This is an excellent initiative from the boys and was well attended last year. I encourage all boys to take advantage of this informal tutoring service, whether it is for homework help or support with an assignment.

It is always gratifying to welcome back the seniors from the previous year to our annual Scholars’ Assembly.

Assessment PlannersEvery student was emailed recently his assessment planner, and parents also received the assessment planner to enable them to support their sons with their time management. Please encourage your sons to use this as a tool to help manage the balance between academic and co-curricular pursuits. We are starting to enter busy assessment periods and it is essential that boys look ahead and plan for those events which might impact on their study time.

New Senior StudiesAs the School prepares to transition from the OP system to the new QCE system which will generate an ATAR, you will start to see changes. Staff have been intensively trained in the preparation of assessment instruments to ensure they meet the requirements of assessments under the new system. You may start to notice changes in the boys’ assessment instruments as the academic staff embrace the new requirements. The most obvious one will be a change to the cover sheet of assessments, but you may start to notice a change in the layout and language used in the assessments. Cognitive verbs is a term the boys will come across more frequently. The cognitive verbs are the direction within an

assessment item, such as evaluate, analyse or describe. These verbs have a shared meaning irrespective of the discipline. When boys see these terms they should have a clear understanding of what is required of them. This shared language, embraced from Year 7 and beyond will help prepare boys for the summative assessment instruments in their final year.

Director of Sport and Activities

From the smiling welcomes from the students as I walk through the grounds, to the helpful guidance from my colleagues, I feel as if I have been part of this community for a lot longer than just one week.

Coming from the New South Wales GPS system, I was introduced to the Queensland GPS through a celebration of the Association at the ‘100 Years of GPS’ launch held at Nudgee College on Monday, 19 February. This launch was the result of combined efforts between all the schools and their respective Headmasters, Directors of Sport & Activities as well as the tireless work from the GPS Executive Officer Nicole L’Efevre and her team. The occasion was marked by the unveiling of each school’s ‘Centenary Flag’ alongside the tangible evidence of spirited GPS competition through the presence of every major GPS trophy. To be able to see the collective efforts of all these GPS schools in putting aside fierce rivalries and embedded competitiveness to provide this platform for celebration was outstanding. It was also a pleasure to see our Year 12 Prefects representing the School at such a landmark event and mingling with the students of other schools. Notable mention must go to our Senior Dayboy Prefect, Adrian Irwin, who held a captivated audience with his prose that drew attention to the philosophies and values underpinning the GPS and its member schools. This year promises to unveil additional events to highlight the centenary with them to be memorable occasions for all students.

CRICKETRound 3 of the GPS season saw Toowoomba Grammar School 1st XI taking on the current GPS 1st XI premiers, The Southport School (TSS), in a home game on Mills Oval. The previous week’s washout meant the players were rearing to go and after winning the toss Captain Nick Brown elected to bat. A collapse early on saw the team struggling at 9-34 and even with a solid partnership between Seb Ingold and Harry Weir, the 1st XI struggled to make amends with TGS all out for 62. In response to this however, the 1st XI bowlers were looking for redemption and had the visitors 2-20 at one stage. An intended strike at the middle order was not to eventuate with the strong batting line-up of TSS being too good. TSS eventually chased down the runs in 17.5 overs.

Round 4 of the GPS season saw the majority of teams take on Nudgee College after travelling down the Range with a small number of supplementary fixtures taking place in addition to this. Across all teams Toowoomba Grammar School recorded a total of 20 wins and 12 losses for the day with the 1st XI recording a great win against Nudgee (all out for 121). The partnership between our two Year 10 students, Jack Thompson (35) and opener Dan Brown (43*) solidified the foundations for this win with these young men, along with their

team, to be commended on their resilience and fortitude. In the 2nd XI Mitchell Bourke scored an impressive 81 from 36

balls to lead the team to a great victory against Nudgee College. This whirlwind of clean hitting was ably augmented by Luke Radford (57) and Tom Coonan (30).

Charles Schoori in the 10C also notched up some runs to cement the win, recording 61 not out with Jack Conlan in the 10D taking 3 wickets in a superb performance with ball in hand. Callum Galvin in the 8A led the way with bat in hand forming a strong partnership to leave him with a half century in their resounding defeat of Nudgee College.

The bowling prowess of our younger players in the Year 7 sides was most impressive and the 7A side notched up 154 runs to defeat Nudgee (10/94). Thisaja Samarawickrama was a standout performer in this game, taking 4 /5 from 5 overs and being rightly awarded Most Valuable Player on the day. Riyan Khan in the 7C led the way with impressive bowling statistics, taking 3/4 off 2 overs and Campbell Chappell in the 7E with 4/20 off 4 overs.

RepresentationCongratulations to Morgan Galvin on his efforts in the Under 15 QLD Cricket Championships from 10 - 18 February.

SWIMMINGThe Swim Squad has been in full flight preparing for the 2018 GPS Championships. The boys have been training hard and represented the School competitively throughout this season’s meets. The boys and staff involved will be looking for the wider community to provide support at what is one of the highlights in the GPS calendar on Friday, 2 March at Brisbane Aquatic Centre.

We wish our School’s Captain of Swimming, Joshua Smith, all the very best as he trials for Commonwealth Games selection on Thusday.

VOLLEYBALL

TGS vs IGSThe first game of the 2018 GPS season saw the boys travel to Ipswich Grammar School (IGS). Overall it was a successful trip with the 1st VI, 3rd VI, 4th VI, 11A, 11B, 10A, 8C and 7D teams all successful on the court. Despite a shaky start the 1st VI proved to be too strong for IGS winning 3 sets to nil. A special congratulation is extended to Pat Noble for winning the ‘Play of the Day’ award for his top spin serves that turned the set in favour of the team and assisted in their straight sets win.

TSS ByeWith TSS not contesting Volleyball in the GPS competition, the boys had a second bye in as many weeks. To avoid another week of no

games, Dr Brett Sawyer (MIC Volleyball) was instrumental in setting up an internal game system whereby the boys were able to develop their skills, communication and team play as well as enjoy the spirit of competitiveness and camaraderie amongst each other playing.

Congratulations to the following boys who, after two rounds, won their divisions:

Kevin Langton (7AB / 8AB Division)Rohan Ryder (7CD/8CD Division)Simon Rodriguez (9AB / 10AB Division)William Bailey (9CD / 10CD Division)Chad Johnston (1st / 2nd / 11AB Division)Ben Cribb (11CD / 3rd / 4th Division)

Each of these boys will receive a pizza voucher kindly donated by the Volleyball Supporters’ Group.

1st VI Volleyball vs Old BoysThis turned out to be a great hit out for the 1st VI playing against an invitational Old Boys’ team. The match was tight, only being decided in the fifth set with the 1st VI outlasting a tiring Old Boys’ team. Many thanks must go to the Old Boys involved in this game and the level of competition they provided for the 1st VI team.

TGS vs NC The trip to Nudgee College proved to be a tough road trip with only the 11B, 11C, 10A, 10C and 8C teams winning. The 1st VI lost 1-3 sets and they soon found out the competition is strong across the board with too many unforced errors allowing the opposition to wrest control of the game and ultimately the result. Well done to the 10A team who are still undefeated which can be attributed to their resolute defence at the net.

RepresentationCongratulations to the following boys on making the Darling Downs Volleyball Teams, we wish them all the best as they represent the region.

MUSICThe GPS Music Day of Excellence was held on Thursday, 22 February with 28 students representing Toowoomba Grammar School and ably guided by Mr Neil Roche-Kelly and Mr David Sandford and their staff. The students in the GPS combined Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra and Choir had a significant day of rehearsals during the day before the culmination of their efforts were enjoyed by hundreds of guests in the Queensland Performing Arts Centre that evening. The musical performance of ‘Carmina Burana’ involved 400 students from the nine GPS schools and the Schools were delighted to have the presence of the Governor of Queensland, His Excellency, The Honourable Paul de Jersey AC. All present were glowing in their praise of the student musicians.

CADETSI am particularly looking forward to seeing our young men in action on the Parade Ground particularly as they begin to up the ante in preparation for the ANZAC Day Parade and Ceremony in Term 2. Thank you to LT AAC Ann Hallam and her staff in their tireless efforts each week with our Cadets.

I would also like to make mention of the efforts of all our staff in their commitment to the young men of Toowoomba Grammar School and their co-curricular pursuits. Without the selfless actions of these staff guiding our young men on the sporting field, in the music, drama and activities rooms and on the Parade Ground we would not be able to offer such a breadth of activities.

CONGRATULATIONSWe congratulate Cameron Shields (Year 12) who has been awarded the CAMS National Young Driver of the Year Award 2017. This year Cameron will contest the 2018 Australian Formula 3 Premier Series in the fastest open wheel race cars in Australia.

From the Director of Boarding

The boys are becoming quite busy with academic work and the many other commitments they have. I am occasionally struck by just how many options the boarders have to immerse themselves in activities at Toowoomba Grammar School. Just last Friday, there was a BBQ dinner for all boarders at the Pavilion and the Gym was opened that night by Mr Platen who ran some organised games. This was followed by GPS cricket and volleyball during the day on Saturday and then an excursion to watch the Brisbane Broncos play the Gold Coast Titans at Clive Berghofer Oval that night. On Sunday morning, we had a number of boarders dust off their boots for the commencement of the club rugby season in Toowoomba. Others took to the tennis courts to compete in the TGS Age Championships. Many of the Year 8 boarders participated in a Pool Party Social with Glennie at the TGS Aquatic Centre, whilst other boarders headed out on another excursion to the local trampolining centre Kloud9ine. Please encourage your son to keep an eye out for the various recreation activities available to boarders and to join in if he is looking for something to do.

On Monday, 12 February there was a Formal Dinner for all boarders in the Centenary Dining Hall. Ben Donohoe (Year 12) did a great job as the Master of Ceremonies, as did Nick Brown (Year 12) and James Nixon (Year 12) who also had speaking roles. The special guest at this Formal Dinner was Harrison Humphries who was the Senior Prefect at Toowoomba Grammar School in 2005. Harrison is probably best remembered as the young man who broke his neck in a rugby match in his Senior year. He spoke to the boys about the positive attitude and persistence he needed to overcome this very serious injury. Harrison spoke with sincerity and humility and I thought all the boys enjoyed his address.

One area that we continue to work on is study skills. Many of our younger boarders start their senior schooling unsure of how to

effectively use their time when doing homework. They also struggle with time management. We are fortunate that Mr David Klan is running two study skills sessions for boarders in Term 1. Mr Klan will be conducting sessions in Weeks 6 and 7 of this term for all Year 7 boarders and this will also be open for older boarders who elect to attend. Please contact your son’s Housemaster if you would like him to attend.

A new initiative this year has seen Year 11 boarders going to Corfe House to assist the younger boys during Prep time. Each of our five Houses takes responsibility for a different night of the week. It has been tremendous to see the Year 11 boys helping the Corfe boys with homework, reading to them and also helping some to overcome homesickness. I know the Year 11 boys have enjoyed the chance to help out with this worthwhile project and they have learnt a great deal in the process.

Just a reminder that the School has organised a bus to take boarders to Brisbane Airport on the last day of this term (Thursday, 29 March). This might be of interest if your son needs to catch a flight home for the holidays. Please contact me with any questions regarding this service.

Best wishes,

Jim NobleDirector of Boarding

Staff NewsWe welcome Ms Laura Chegwidden to the Arts Department as our new Lower Strings Instructor and Ensemble Director. Laura is a performer, Instructor from Newcastle, New South Wales and is looking forward to working with our boys and continuing the wonderful legacy of Strings at TGS. We thank young Old Boy Mr Hugh Hansen for his fine work with the boys over the last few weeks and wish him well with his continued Music studies. Hugh will be directing our String Orchestra and Vivace Quartet for our Welcome Concert next week. Mrs Tonia Paroz will continue to take our upper strings students for private tuition this term.

Ensemble AuditionsAt TGS we manage all our ensembles into Core Ensembles and Enrichment Ensembles. The Core Ensembles are the starting point for the various disciplines e.g. band, strings, acting and vocals, while the Enrichment Ensembles are our advanced ensembles that radiate out of our Core groups. Please note, it is a policy in our department that boys in Enrichment Ensembles must be also in the relevant Core Ensemble e.g. members of Vivace Quartet in String Orchestra, Grammarphones in Choir, Clarinet Choir in Wind Ensemble, etc. These ensembles usually involve auditioning for a place and many of our students have been undergoing the audition process over the first couple of weeks of term. Congratulations to all those students who made a place in one of our Enrichment Ensembles and we look forward to seeing you perform over the year. To all students who auditioned and were unsuccessful this time round, I thank you for your hard work preparing and encourage you to keep trying; many boys wait a few years to make it to all of the groups they are aiming for, and such is the nature of these ensembles that we can’t take everyone.

The GrammarphonesIn the very early stages of Term 1, the Grammrphones have already notched up a performance at the Academic Honours Assembly held on Thursday, 8 February. A performance this early in the year is no mean feat and I congratulate them on their efforts performing the Stevie Wonder favourite “Signed, Sealed, Delivered”. To hear them and all other ensembles please refer below to our ‘Welcome Concert’ section.

Drama – Combat Workshops with Tim DashwoodLast week the Drama classes were very fortunate to have the opportunity to workshop with Old Boy and established Australian actor, Tim Dashwood on Stage Combat. Tim is currently working with the Shake & Stir Theatre Company on a national touring production as well as being a Stage Combat trainer with the Bell Shakespeare Company and the Australian Ballet on their upcoming production of “Spartacus”. We were very fortunate to have him once again take time out of his busy schedule to work with the boys of TGS. Tim engaged with all students of Drama from year 7-12 on various stage combat methods, including arm to arm combat, knife, sticks and sword training.

GPS Centenary Music Showcase 2018An amazing day was had by all last Thursday, 22 February when 28 TGS students joined forces with their musical peers from all the GPS Schools for the annual GPS Music Showcase, all day rehearsals followed by a concert at QPAC Concert Hall, Southbank, Brisbane. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the GPS Association, a number of very special things were put in place. Firstly, the Concert Band

Then, after a short change of setup, the audience was treated to the incredible work by German composer Carl Orff “Carmina Burana”, in almost its entirety featuring a 300 strong choir, two professional Opera soloists and a full Symphony Orchestra. This was all under the baton of internationally renowned UK conductor Mr Andrew Mogrelia who has conducted the Royal Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, San Francisco Ballet and a host of other superb orchestras and ballet companies around the world. The applause rang loud and long from the full house and this GPS day will be long remembered. ensembles have had little more than three rehearsals in the lead up to the concert, we will hear amazing music from bands, choirs, wind and string ensembles and drama from TiGAA, all hosted by our student leaders for 2018, who may also entertain us with a musical item.

All boys performing are required to be at the Baynes Centre for roll call and warm up/set up by 6:00pm, with the concert beginning at 7:00pm. If you are wondering what to do after dropping the boys off, SOTA have the perfect solution for you.

SOTA (Supporters of the Arts Pre-Welcome Concert Function) - 6:00 - 6:50pm Thursday, 1 March - Drama/Art FoyerAfter dropping your sons off at 6:00pm and instead of going home or simply waiting for the concert to begin, SOTA invites all parents attending the “Welcome Concert” to come to the new Arts/Drama building and enjoy a glass of wine and savoury snacks in the foyer. See what a wonderful new space the boys have access to; renew old acquaintances and make new friends amongst the Music and Drama community of TGS parents. We would love to see you! – Jeremy Osborn (SOTA President 2018)

Read My Lips - 7:00pm Friday, 9 March, Assembly HallPlanning and rehearsing for ‘Read My Lips’ night presented by TiGAA (Toowoomba Grammar Acting Academy) is in full swing and is guaranteed to be a gloriously hilarious night of entertainment. Toowoomba’s premier Lip Synching Competition will be held on Friday, 9 March, TGS Assembly Hall from 7:00pm. This should be a wonderful night of entertainment with monies raised funding the Sree Belbhenjyang School in Nepal. This initiative means that two teachers in a remote area of the Himalayas are able to live and work in the community they grew up in. As well as this we help fund building and earthquake repairs still ongoing from the horrific 2015 disaster. So, in summary, more than two amazing and worthwhile reasons to attend this evening. See you there!

SHEP (State Honours Ensemble Programme) Darling DownsCongratulations to three of our musicians Ruben Fitton – Choir, Ryan Murphy and Brock Johnston – Band for successfully auditioning for the Darling Downs event of the ever popular SHEP programme. These boys will join many other students in April at The Glennie School for a wonderful weekend of music making led by some of the leading clinicians from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.

Nominations are now open for the SHEP Middle School - South-East Queensland Programme being held from Friday, 1 to Sunday, 3 June 2018. This SHEP programme provides an opportunity for middle school (Years 5 - 8 inclusive) wind, brass, percussion, string and voice students to work in an intensive environment of musical excellence with their peers under the leadership of a team of eminent conductors at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, Southbank.

In summary, I am looking forward to seeing as many people as possible this term at the Welcome Concert, Thursday, 1 March and ‘Read My Lips’, Friday, 9 March, and our next SOTA meeting, Monday, 12 March.

It is wonderful to see the boys return big piles of books they have read over the break, and then borrow more. I have noticed some particular titles more popular this term, and some of the old favourites. A report of the top titles in the first four weeks of term included some interesting new additions. There were the usual Cherub and Ranger’s Apprentice books, both extremely popular with teen and adult readers alike. Cell 7 by Kerry Drewery is popular. This is the first book of a trilogy set in England where the justice system, so similar to our own, no longer exists. When a person is imprisoned, the public vote as to whether they are guilty or not. It is an incredible example of media manipulation, full of action and mystery. Spud by John Heffernan is still popular, as is the Once series by Morris Gleitzman. A new title has hit our popular reads, Renaissance by Oliver Bowden. This is part of the Assassin’s Creed series. In the Dark Spaces by Cally Black is also gaining popularity.

This is one of my favourite books at the moment. Being science fiction, it follows the kidnapping of Tamara from a space freighter, by the Garuwa, who are bird-like creatures having their stores of helium-3 and phosphorous taken away by humans. A stand-alone read, one boy I recommended it to was pleased it was not part of a series, so it did not impede his study time. The cricket biographies are also popular with the season in full swing, as is Billy Slater’s new autobiography.

Our Recruit Muster was a very wet day but we had a fantastic turn out of students from Toowoomba Grammar School, The Glennie School and Fairholme College. Our Senior Cadets produced some excellent static team activities for the afternoon which was followed by a sausage sizzle. Since then, we have had an enrolment of 24 recruits and one transfer to the Unit. This gives us a posted strength of 90 cadets.

On Sunday, 4 February we conducted our first NCO training day for the year, where our Lance Corporals and Corporals revised drill instruction in preparation for teaching our recruits. Thursday, 8 February our senior cadets were promoted on Assembly. They are: Senior Cadet Under Officer Luke Radford; Cadet Under Officer Niklaus Vettiger and Cadet Warrant Officer Class Two Marco Zuccoli-Handley. Friday, 9 February the mobile rock wall came up to Toowoomba as it had been cancelled for the Recruit Muster. All cadets and recruits participated together with a number of outdoor team activities supervised by our Senior Cadets. Sunday, 11 February saw a good turnout of recruits and NCOs for our Recruit Training Day. This was a full day of training in order that we can complete the new Cadet Development Continuum (CDC) Recruit Training Package by the completion of ANZAC commitments. We continue to support the National Servicemen’s Association and on Saturday, 17 February we provided a Catafalque Party for their Commemorative Service. The weekend of 17-18 February was also a school activity and saw a number of students participate in the annual

Since Cadets started training on Friday, 2 February we have had a very busy schedule of activities.

.22 Rife Winners• Adam Peacock• Jack Campbell• Olivia Lewis

.357 Pistol• Ben Peacock• Josiah Neal• William Hurn

Shot Gun with clay targets• Jake Hewett• Fraser Tennent• Aiden Munchenberg

Following the competition, the students had the opportunity to also fire 9mm and .22 pistols and a pump action .22 rifle at targets. The response from all of those involved was extremely positive and the club was very complimentary on the behaviour of the students.

Training has now commenced in earnest and last week we completed our mandatory training at Unit level. Recruits and cadets have been given instruction on the history of Old Boys who paid the supreme sacrifice. This is all part of our military instruction and an opportunity to put into context the School’s military history and traditions when they are shown the names on the honour rolls in the Old Hall.

Training will now continue for our recruits who will be issued further clothing and equipment and will have further drill and field instruction in preparation for our first camp/bivouac being held on the weekend of 17-18 March. Training will also start in preparation for the Unit’s Junior Leader Barrier Assessment which will take place next term. Other cadets will have other training which covers the Level 2 of the CDC.

University Showcase The Year 12 boys enthusiastically met representatives from ten universities and the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) during a University Showcase visit to the School on 12 February. The Universities represented included The University of Queensland, University of Southern Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, Christian Heritage College, Griffith University, Bond University, University of the Sunshine Coast, Southern Cross University, University of New England and the Australian Catholic University. The purpose of the showcase was to support the boys’ research into courses of study and university life, which included a range of short presentations on topics such as How to Apply, Accommodation Options, the Cost of Tertiary Study and Student Life. Following these presentations, the boys had the opportunity to talk to the various representatives and to gather information brochures. This was an excellent introduction for the boys allowing them to continue their investigations into their post-school options.

From the School CounsellorA commonality amongst students who present at this time of the term is usually a plea for help on how to stay focused and get motivated. As the excitement of the start of a new school year wears off and assessment deadlines loom ever closer, many students find it difficult to maintain their motivation to study. For some, the avoidance of study related tasks becomes chronic as they go in search of deliberate distractions. At its simplest, procrastination is often caused by distraction or laziness.

Whilst there are a number of effective ways to reduce the impacts of procrastination and even increase a student’s motivation, in essence, our brains need a reason to do things. Perhaps more important is that the student himself needs to have his own reasons to do things. However, procrastination is more complex than a student being lazy, easily distracted or not having a reason to start a task. Procrastination also involves poor time management or limited study skill, internal or external pressure to succeed, too many obligations and/or perfectionistic traits.

Without going into detail as to the psychology behind procrastination, I have put together my key tips for procrastinators to assist them to successfully complete their required tasks:

Tip 1: Plan time to study – Use your school diary or google calendar, download an app such as My Study Life. Do whatever is useful for you to ensure you set time aside to complete your study/homework. You also want to be sure to schedule in breaks, but may find the use of a timer helpful to avoid spiralling into a three hour YouTube session watching funny cat videos.

Tip 2: Set a place to study – This needs to be away from any distractions, free of unnecessary noise and should not be on or in your bed. Attempting to complete work on your bed can confuse the brain into thinking it is time to sleep. It is also very bad for your posture.

Tip 3: Task oriented study – As you commence, write a to-do list and prioritise this from most to least important. It might be helpful to use your Assessment Planner, located on the Moodle page, to make note of when key assessment pieces are due. Once you have completed a

task, tick this off your list before you move onto the next. You may also find that breaking a large task into smaller, more manageable tasks assists you to set out and complete a piece of work successfully.

Tip 4: Remove distractions – Put all unnecessary electronic devices out of arms reach and turn off anything that makes unnecessary noise. You might like to let others in the house know when you are sitting down to study and ask that where possible, noise is kept to a minimum.

Tip 5: Mini motivators – Whether it be rewarding yourself after completing a task with a break on social media or purchasing yourself that new PlayStation game upon receiving a good grade, finding an external motivator can go a long way in overcoming procrastination. Set yourself some small, tangible yet achievable goals and make these ever present in your life.

Tip 6: Be accountable – Tell you friends or even your family that you would like to stop procrastinating and for them to make you accountable. You could even form a study group or set personal reminders on your phone/IPad to help keep you on track.

Tip 7: Manage stress – There are a multitude of stress management strategies out there, all of which are useful for a variety of people. However, the simplest things in life are often of greatest assistance when we set about managing our stress. Be sure to take time to do things you enjoy, connect with friends and family, and make good choices regarding eating, exercise and sleeping habits.

Finally, it is important to understand that procrastination is self-imposed and taking small steps in changing bad habits can lead to personal success. Making a plan, following it carefully and involving those around you can go a long way in managing and eventually overcoming procrastination. As always, if additional support is required please do not hesitate to make contact at any time.

If they are new to boarding, encourage them to become involved in whatever activities are offered. If you have any queries or suggestions regarding boarding, you are most welcome to contact the Boarder Parents’ Support Group and we will help you or direct you to the appropriate staff contact.

Each Boarding House has a BPSG House Representative. Your House Rep’s role is to act as a spokesperson for the parents of their House at meetings and during discussions that the BPSG has throughout the year with the Senior Staff of TGS, as well as assisting with any concern you may have.

Please know that your comments, opinions and suggestions are valued and that if something is concerning you, or you are simply unsure of something, there is always a solution or an answer to be found. All of your correspondence and ideas are respected and will be treated confidentially.

We will circulate a Notice of Meeting and encourage you to email any input to your House Representative to be included in the Agenda which will then be sent out to you prior to the next meeting. Everyone is most welcome to attend as the meetings are very relaxed and offer a great chance to meet other boarding parents and hear directly from Executive staff members of TGS.

Please find below our list of contacts for 2018. The contact details and other information relevant to boarders can also be found on the School Portal by going to http://www.twgs.qld.edu.au/ click on the “Parent” tab, enter your details and then click on the “Boarding” tab.

This year, the Art Show Committee has extended an invitation to all boarder parents to attend the ‘Boarder Parents’ High Tea’ at 2 pm on Saturday 24 March. Tickets are $45.00 each and bookings can be made through Toowoomba Grammar School Art Show website or the School Office: (07) 46872500 It is a perfect opportunity for you to catch up with boarder parents you may know and to also meet some new parents.
