Thanks to John Anderson of Cleveland, Ohio, we are happy to report that entomologists haven't agreed on how many varieties of insects inhabit the world. They think they total two million, but about 6,000 new species are being discovered each year. (Is it pos· sible that at least half of them

are living in the Town of Bethlehem?)

Aphids are one of the most numerous and destructive of all insects. In a test, FOUR TONS were gathered from a single acre of alfalfa. Someone has estimated that the progeny from a single pair of aphids, if all survived, would total 1,560 septillion (1, 560, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, . 000,000,000) in a single season. Anyone who doubts this figure can make his own check. All he has to do is count the .aphids in one square mile and multiply by the area of grass and croplands that harbor these pests. It's just. a matter of simple arithmetic, you see!
