Cups to Compost All cups, plates, and utensils at the event are compostable

BSIM supplies local coffee shops with compostable coffee cups during the event

Anaerobic Digestion

Monterey Regional Waste Management District turns

Marathon cups and left over food into compost which

generates renewable energy from the methane captured during the digester process!

Supply Chain

BSIM collaborates with all of the vendors at the

event to ensure that they are in compliance with zero waste standards

Styrofoam used at this event is sent to Waste to Waves, a program created by SustainableSurf.org, which compacts the foam and turns it into surfboards

GU packets are diverted and sent to Terracycle, a company that takes plastic wrappers, chipbags, and other materials and turns them into a number of upcycled products

Blankets to Boards

All Heat Sheets used by runners are sent to Advanced Flexible Materials, Inc. which are then compressed into alternative building materials

Locally hand-crafted medals

Participants of BSIM are awarded with locally hand-crafted medals, reducing transportation necessities and supporting local business

Each year, the Marathon hosts

a shoe and clothing drive, donating the

contents of the drive to Last

Food Donation

BSIM collects pre-consumer food extras and sends it the Food Bank

for Monterey County

There are no trash cans on the Marathon

course!

All materials are hand sorted by local community groups!

BSIM encourages hydration with reusable water

bottles as opposed to single-use water

Instead of using paper and materials,

registration for BSIM is paperless and

participants are even awarded with a virtual

goodie bag
